The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
1. How does our media product
represent particular social
groups?
Evaluation Question 2
By Isabella Christodoulou
2. Age/Gender
Typical representation of teenage males:
- The stereotypical representation of teenage
males have change over many generations
- Teenage males in modern society today usally
carry a negative label that they cause chaos
through their rebellious actions and antagonise
the law through many different reasons for
example under age consumption of alcohol or
drug abuse. The media also portrays teen males
to be lazy and not active.
- However, teenage males in the 80’s would have
been given a positive label by many that said
they were polite, helpful and playful.
3. Age/Gender
Typical representation of teenage males in
thrillers:
- Within thriller films male teens are
usally seen as the brave character who
has good intentions. Teen Males in
thrillers may also be portrayed as a
heroic figure, for example, Jacob from
‘Twilight’ steps in to save the damsel in
destress.
- The teenage male typical
representation has been changed and
molded inside of thrillers, which breaks
the rebellious label of teenage males.
4. Age/Gender
Typical representation of teenage male in our film:
-In our media product the young teenage male is seen
as the victim/ target of the possession in the film. This
breaks many stereotypes due to thriller films usually
having a male heroic figure rather than a male victim.
- This teenage male is shown as a white middle-class
clever boy. This is predicted through the attire of the
male and also the surroundings of the house around
him.
- Throughout the film opening the main character’s
emotions change showing the audience that he is
scared due to the sounds that he can hear. These
emotions are normal and can relate back to teenage
males today.
5. Social Class
• Middle class white familes usually
tend to live just off of a city so
their access to the city is easy
such as for work purposes.
• Normally a middle class white
family would have education
privledges due to up-bring and
elaborated language being used
frequently.
• The typical middle class white
family is seen as a nuclear family
within the UK (cereal packet)
Middle-Class Traditionally:
6. Social Class
• Middle class families can be seen in two
different ways within a thriller film one being
the traditional happy middle class family and
another being a middle class family turned evil
with a pyschological turn to the story-line.
• A thriller example of this violent behaviour
behind middle class familes in thrillers is shown
in the movie ‘fatal attraction’, the husband has
an affair and the wife goes mental and tries to
kill him.
• Another thriller example would be the film ‘the
visit’, where the children’s grandparents
attempt to kill them whilst staying at there’s
over the weekend due to their family going on a
holiday.
Middle-class represented in thriller
films:
7. Social Class
• In our film opening we had a
demographic of white middle class
which was created by many factors,
one being the location of where it
was set being a big semi-detached
house in a suburban which perfectly
matches the criteria of that
stereotype. The main character is
also wearing a formal suite, looking
smart and afficiant.
• As well as this, the use of dialogue
”hello” that Teddy uses is standard
ellaborted English which withholds
the white middle class stereotype.
Middle Class represented in our product:
8. Race/Ethnicity
• A traditional white man is shown to
usaully be well dressed and well
spoken. White males have a lot of
power in society and are politically
and socially excepted more than
others for example a black
individual therefore they hold a
massive advantage.
• A stereotypical white male will
have a buisiness office job of which
they would return home after a day
of work to his wife and two kids in
a big house just off of the city,
which is affordable in his price
range.
Traditional White Person:
9. Race/Ethicity
• An Active man that usually has a
back up plan and help behind him
but concors it by himself, for
example, the film instant death
the main character has a weapon
to protect him and others, being
a heroic figure.
• However, not all thriller films
have masculine heroic men, for
example, in the thriller film called
‘knock knock’ the man is the
vulnerable figure for most of the
film, similar to our thriller
opening.
Traditional white person in a thriller:
10. Race/Ethnicity
Traditional White Male+Female in my media
product:
-In our media product teddy sticks to the stereotypical
and traditional role of a white boy who is smartly
dressed and in education.
-Erin shows a white little girl who is not a stereotypical
girl figure as this girl is possessed and aspires to be a
doll.
-We chose to stick to the traditional stereotypes as it
brings a normal character into a scarier situation and
instead of drawing the audiences attention to the
characters, they can focus on the story plot.
-We changed the typical representation of the black
character stereotypically getting killed first in a thriller
film, however, we challenged this by seeing that the
white young male dies first instead.
