Measures of Central Tendency: Mean, Median and Mode
Evaluation Question 2
1. Question 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?
My media product represents the age range of teenagers as being individual hence
the indie genre being more popular and familiar with this age group, for example the
models I have used are all single artists, not in a band or group, even the model I
photographed but didn’t use is a solo artist. My magazine also represents teenagers
in being up and coming within the music industry such as having singles and albums
out which attracts a niche audience, suggesting that younger artists are coming
forward and putting their music into the public domain and mostly the audience of
these artists are of similar age. Additionally, the model credit as also relatable to the
teenage target audience as the indie genre of my magazine for example acapella
music isn’t really known in the music industry, the artists featured would attract a
concentrated and particular audience.
.
Both of the models I have
used are singular artists, and
are within the age range of my
target audience which is
roughly 16-25 year olds and
they represent the indie genre
as they are sole artists with
different approaches to the
music industry. By using
singular artists of this age,
represents teenagers mostly
and young people as more
familiar and enjoy this genre of
music as they’re apart of the
genre. If I had used a group of
teenagers as models, I may
have given out a different
impression of teenagers; that
they’re all the same and follow
one another in their musical
choices
2. Secondly, my media product represents females in a strong and empowered way as
they as all singular artists and have made it into the music industry, this suggests
women are now at the same position of authority and power as men in the music
industry whether they’re mainstream artists or more refined artists such as the artists
in my magazine. Due to the genre of my magazine being indie and acapella, it shows
a juxtaposition with fact that the females represented in my magazine are in a power
as acapella and instrumental music generally tends to be soothing and show a more
mellow side to the artist. Additionally, the fact I have used two females as my models
is completely a coincidence but is a positive as it shows women have made in as far
and possibly even further in the music industry as there are two females represented
and no male models. If I had used a male model as well as my main model, the
representation of gender would be considered more equal, however the fact I have
chosen a female to be one the front of my magazine and a hypothetical male model
as a secondary model, would show that females are in greater power than males.
Although I photographed 3 models and only used 2, the third model was also a
female so if I had possibly incorporated the third female artist it would completely
overthrow gender equality which is one of the reasons I decided only to use 2 female
models so it wouldn’t seem as aggressively female headed. Also, the fact I am
female and have used females as models creates the impressions that females are
strong and possibly more into this genre, but also music in general, the fact I am
The original idea for the main model was for her name to be ‘Unknown Artist’, a
small play on words based on when you download a track and the artist isn’t as
popular as mainstream artists, but then I was advised to translate it into a foreign
language that was still readable to make the artist even more ‘Unknown’, this
represents teenagers as being undefined and acknowledged for doing well in any
aspect in life in society. Teenagers are usually only usually shown in a negative
way, that’s why I decided to use teenagers as my magazine shows them to be
successful and achieving status.
This is a small snippet of text from my double page
spread article and is very informal which will work well
with my target audience. It shows females in a witty
aspect as I used ‘revealing’ and ‘stripped back’ to
suggest some sort of abstract technique whilst
performing, but then reassured the audience that by
using those words it meant the complete opposite to
what they might be thinking. Also by using ‘OF
COURSE’ and in capitals may suggest that it was
foolish of the audience to think anything else but the
music was ‘revealing’ and ‘stripped back’.
3. female comes across in the double page spread as I have gone for an informal,
chatty approach which will relate to the target audience and that type of colloquial
and informal lexis suggest my gender.
Lastly, my magazine represents working class females as all the models are from a
working class background. It shows working class people as just as successful as
middle class people, as they are able to achieve what they want to do and this is
shown in my magazine as the working class models have achieved well in the music
industry and hopefully in which ever professional field they may chose, whether
they're male or female.
The quote I used was used to represent working class people as always
doubting their ability to make it in the world and in my magazine the working
class model is shown to be doubting her ability to make it in the music industry.
Additionally, working class people are represented in my magazine to be
thankful and always appreciate the opportunities that are given to them, by the
fact that the main model is dumbfounded by the fact she's made it in the music
industry.
The secondary model, who is
also working class is also
appreciative and realises the
opportunities she's been given
which has led her to become
'famous', which is shown by
the quote which is displayed
underneath her picture on the
contents page.
4. The pull quote on the double page spread, underneath the model credit
suggest that no matter what social class you are, as long as you aspire to
be something no matter what age, you're able to achieve it which is
reinforced as the main artist has desired to become an artist which she
has achieved.
