Clothing/ accessories
• RNB Male artists usually go for two types of clothing looks, the first type of
look is quite casual, this is the look that my model followed within my
magazine. The clothing is usually either a black or white top or if they want to
go for a smarter look they would wear a shirt. The other type of look is more
edgy, they usually add extra accessories for example sunglasses or possibly
wearing jewellery such as chains or big watches, these conventions make the
artists appear cooler and younger.
• As I still wanted my model to fit to an image that I know my social group
would want to see, I added a hat to my model making him appear to be more
fresh and trendy.
Gesture
• When photographing pictures of my model, I ensured that his hands were
doing something, as in R&B magazines a models hands are never really left
handing for example in the images below. I chose to follow this as I feel it
represents my social group very well as my target market like when the artist
appears to be dominant and current, as it relates to what their personality is
like.
Gaze/posture
• I ensured my model had a focused and direct gaze, appealing as if model is
starring directly at the customers. I feel this is effective, as it can really appeal
and draw in my audience. Additionally the gaze usually has an intimidating
facial expression fitting to urban, cool look which my social group follow.
• The posture of my image is quite unique, in contrast with other magazines in
the R&B market. I feel the slanted posture would really attract my urban social
group, as is different, and his posture is positioned in such a way, that it can
appear to be as if he is coming out of the page. I feel this can really attract my
audience as they enjoy things that are distinctive and new.
Lighting
• I ensured the lighting of my image, was extremely bright and vibrant as I know
that would attract my target audience. As my target audience are young
something bright and eye catching would really appeal to them. As the image I
photographed initially was quite dark I brightened it using Photoshop as I
know studio shots normally have great lighting and I wanted my magazine to
fit to the typical R&B magazine studio shot. These shots create a very sharp
strong image and I know this would attract my social group.
Shots and angle
• Majority of shots within R&B magazines are either medium shots are medium
close ups. The use of this is so the audience can build a connection with the
artis tbut also can view slight parts of their clothing or accessories. I think
using a medium shot from a low angle is extremely effective making my model
to appear authoritative and dominant, therefore attracting my audience.
• Additionally the use of the medium shot allows the audience to view
accessories, my social group enjoy accessories and fashion therefore the
medium shot links to the representation of the urban social group.
How my magazine represents my social
group overall…
• The genre of music featured will attract my social group.
• Price of magazine fits social group due to it being affordable. As they are in
university or another form of higher education hey do not have that much money
to spend on luxuries.
• My model is dressed like other existing artists, therefore attracting my social group,
additionally the clothing being worn by model is also worn by target market. For
example wearing similar clothing or accessories.
• People that usually listen to R&B are working class, I've focused my magazine on
only one class which is the working class therefore representing my social group.
• Featured articles about R&B celebrities, would attract my target audience, as they
my social group are interested in up to date information and news on celebrities
lives.
• Informal language featured within my magazine due to the way my social group
would talk or what they would want to see.
