The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
2. Action, Characters, Costume
O The action of the thriller will appeal to the
audience because it deals with the theme of
stalking and murder which are appealing
themes as they can be engaged with as they are
themes which you hear about in the media on a
regular basis.
O The characters in my thriller appeal to my target
audience as my target audience are a similar
age to the lead in the thriller and so can identify
with her. The target audience will be able to
identify with the character of Sophie because
they are at the same age as her and have the
same worries and concerns.
O The target audience will also be able to identify
with the Sophie and Eve’s costumes. Sophie's
costume is contemporary and so will appeal to
women who wear contemporary clothes
whereas Eve is wearing 1950’s fashion and so
will appeal to women who like to wear retro
clothing.
3. Lighting, Soundtrack, Camera
O The lighting will appeal to the audience
as I used chiaroscuro lighting which is
an interesting and engaging lighting
and so will entice the audience into the
thriller film.
O The soundtrack will interest the target
audience because it is enigmatic which
makes it more interesting and exciting
to listen too. It also helps to build
tension, suspense and paranoia.
O The camera angles and movements will
appeal to the target audience as we
used them to represent the character
of Sophie against the conventions of
her age as she is seen as a well
educated, hardworking and diligent.
Rather than lazy, moody and apathetic
which is the way the most people aged
15-24 are represented in the media.
4. Inter – Textual References
O We put many inter-textual references throughout the
thriller opening as homage to many fantastic existing
thriller films.
O The most obvious reference is to The Third Man as we
attempted to recreate the famous shot that reviled
Harry Lime, this inter-textual reference will appeal to
the part of the target market which enjoy classic thriller
noir films as The Third Man is an exemplary example of
this. We also named the male character in our thriller
after the character of Harry Lime and called him Henry
Lime, we did this to highlight the similarities between
the two characters.
O Another inter-textual reference is to Once Upon A Time
In America this reference is not as obvious as we based
our character of Eve Walcott to the character of Eve in
this film. Once Upon A Time In America is a timeless
gangster thriller film and so will this inter-textual
reference will fascinate the audience as it is not an
obvious reference.
5. Narrative Structure
O Throughout our thriller the narrative
structure moves from the past to the
present and so when editing we had to
ensure that there was a clear
difference. We had to make sure that
the audience would be able to tell
when we were in the past and when we
were in real time. We made the scenes
in the flashbacks black and white to
differentiate them from the real time
scene which were in full colour.
O This will appeal to our target audience
as they are interested in noir films and
also enjoy crime drama TV shows and
films. It will also help them to identify
with the time period which are being
presented.
6. Cliff Hanger
O The cliff hanger of my thriller
opening is what will hook the
audience for the rest of the film. The
cliff hanger of my thriller opening
increases suspense and also fear as
the audience do not know what is
going to happen to Sophie or why
she is being targeted. The audience
is left with Eve’s necklace in the
centre of the shot to solidify it’s
importance and significance but
they still do not know why.
O The cliff hanger intensifies the
audiences want to know what is
going to happen next.
O We chose to have the final shot with
none of the character in because it
adds another layer of mystery as the
audience do not know what is
happening to them.
7. Audience Feedback
O The audience feedback has helped me to
understand what went well with the
thriller opening and what skills I need to
work on before my next production.
O For the audience feedback I asked women
aged between 15-24 to watch my thriller
opening and fill in a questionnaire
regarding it.
O The majority said that the sequence held
their attention and so this shows me that
the narrative structure and editing were
good but the Mise en scene could have
been better. The Mise en scene section
was the section which scored lowest on
the questionnaire and so will be a skill
which I will try to develop before my next
production.
