1. 1)In what ways does your music magazine use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of existing music magazines? My music magazine develops and changes conventions existing magazines by using certain aspects, such as; layout font style, images and mode of address. When creating my music magazine, I focused greatly on VIBE magazine because it is a popular urban magazine set out to inform, entertain and divert audience members.
2. 1)In what ways does your music magazine use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of existing music magazines? People who listen to hip hop, RNB and all sorts of urban music will enjoy reading VIBE magazine. I incorporated the language of VIBE and the types of artists photographed to influence the same interest to my target audience
3. 2)How does my music magazine represent certain social groups? My magazine is aimed at young people aged 16-19 and is circulated through the UK. The magazine contains both English and American music artists that are popular amongst the youths in the UK. I wanted to introduce positivity towards young people by representing them in good lights through pictures, polls, competitions and much more. My magazine is aimed at a vast ethnical range of young individuals, which will increase the circulation.
4. 2)How does my music magazine represent certain social groups? As there is such a high rate of negative stereotypes to young people these days I thought it was important to make sure I achieved a clear view of how young people have fun without being out of control and negative. I looked at my magazine from an outsider’s point of view to ensure the way my magazine was perceived was informative as well as interesting to the read.
5. 3) What kind of institution might distribute your magazine? The perfect institutes to distribute my magazine would be; cd/dvd sections in supermarkets, urban clothes shops, music shops e.g.: hmv, box offices and places where music concerts take place such as the o2. All of the above places are suitable for there own reasons. Supermarkets are a wide choice for distribution because they have a high rate of customers everyday so the amount of times the magazine will be seen is higher, leading to familiarity amongst all age groups.
6. 3) What kind of institution might distribute your magazine? Secondly, music shops, venues will be aimed more precise buyers looking for a particular type of magazine or genre, therefore putting the magazine in the correct genre in a music shop will obviously appeal to the reader. As for urban clothes shops, the way clothes look, will relate to the music artists in the magazine, perhaps the brand being sold is worn by the featured artists so the customers will relate and show automatic interest.
7. 4)Who would be the audience for your music magazine? The audience for my magazine is a range of young people from a multicultural background to increase diversity and understanding. In the UK, the urban music scene has many cultural mixtures, so this will reflect on my target audience. The mood board I created on my blog focuses on the psychographics of my target audience of young people; what do they like? Food, clothes, music, colors, countries, hobbies, artists, brands and friends. All of those things add up to make the target audiences opinions and preferences.
8. 4)Who would be the audience for your music magazine? I used market research to find out the psychographics, which I then applied to my magazine in order to make it more appealing to the age group. The demographics also play a huge part when deciding the selected audience because you have to consider age (16-19) gender (both) nationality (multi cultural).
9. 5) How did you attract the audience for your music magazine? I attracted the audience for my music publication by researching the things they like and then including them. Firstly, its important that that the front page I very attractive and catches the eye successfully. If the front page doesn't pull the reader in then they are very unlikely to pick up the mag. It has to be; bright, clear and colorful with a consistent font.
10. 5) How did you attract the audience for your music magazine? I had to take into a count the artists in high demand at the time, to put on the front cover or include competitions which involve them. When the audience see their favorite musical artists it will draw them in straight away. I made sure things that related well to young people, it was important to include diversions on the front page as well to make the reader very keen to buy.
11. 6)What have you learnt about technologies over making this product? I have learnt how to make publications look very attractive by making small adjustments. Being consistent throughout my work with font, color and size makes a big difference to the look and the whole outlook of the magazine all together.
12. 6)What have you learnt about technologies over making this product? I have learnt how to use Photoshop more effectively throughout the process of making my magazine. Also, I have learnt how to present information in different ways e.g. slideshow, pictures, videos and interviews.
13. 7) Looking back at your preliminary task what improvements have you made? Compared to my preliminary task, I feel that my final piece is very successful at communicating with the target audience. I made the front page much more engaging for younger people, it was crucial to add fun and playful photos to the magazine to create a theme of excitement. I used a clear, bold yet sophisticated font throughout my magazine in order to keep the reading and style consistent. The front page on my preliminary task consisted of a mid shot of a young girl sitting around the outside area of a school to reflect the idea of it being a school magazine.
14. 7) Looking back at your preliminary task what improvements have you made? My magazine is aimed at both genders, it was important that the colors appealed to both sexes. I used a mixture of hot pink, black and blue to create a diverse theme to the magazine. In my preliminary task, I only used light pink and lilac which looked like it was aimed at prominently girls.
