This document discusses whether the UK is a democratic system of government. It begins by defining democracy as a system of government by the population through elected representatives. It then analyzes aspects of the UK that appear democratic, such as voting and elected representatives, and undemocratic, such as unelected bodies and low voter turnout. It also considers issues like the voting system, declining political participation, and debates around direct vs. representative democracy. The document aims to understand democracy, examine the UK system, and debate how democratic it actually is.
it is good for the college and school students who wants to describe the basic terms of democracy aspects why it is necessary, kinds of democracy, devices of direct democracy merits and demerits etc

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Synthetic Fiber Construction in lab .pptxPavel ( NSTU)
Synthetic fiber production is a fascinating and complex field that blends chemistry, engineering, and environmental science. By understanding these aspects, students can gain a comprehensive view of synthetic fiber production, its impact on society and the environment, and the potential for future innovations. Synthetic fibers play a crucial role in modern society, impacting various aspects of daily life, industry, and the environment. ynthetic fibers are integral to modern life, offering a range of benefits from cost-effectiveness and versatility to innovative applications and performance characteristics. While they pose environmental challenges, ongoing research and development aim to create more sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. Understanding the importance of synthetic fibers helps in appreciating their role in the economy, industry, and daily life, while also emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and innovation.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

How democratic is the UK?
1. -To understand
what democracy
is
-To realise the
different aspects
of democracy
-To debate
whether or not
the UK is
democratic
HOW DEMOCRATIC IS
THE UK?
2. A system of government by the whole population or
all the eligible members of a state, typically through
elected representatives.
Demos – people; kratos – power.
“For the people”.
WHAT IS DEMOCRACY?
3. Signs of democracy in UK include:
Voting,
Members from several parties,
Leader of party is PM.
House of Commons elected.
IN TERMS OF UK
4. On the other hand:
First-past-the-post and minority rule,
Coalitions,
Low/dropping political participation,
Unelected power, (House of Lords & European institutions)
Minority parties (theoretically) redundant
UK CONTINUED
5. Pressure groups
Help get opinions heard
Increase participation
Enhance quality of democracy
Influence the government
Work against the public interest
Social immobilisation
Intense claims of injustice
Large-scale demonstrations often cause conflict

“Bad”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYd9qbRz2fc
A GREY AREA
6. The decline in political participation, including
protests, running for local MP and public speeches.
Specifically voting; why has voter turnout dropped?
Partisan dealignment
No political education
All parties for the same thing
Change in ideologies
What could be done about this?
A KEY ASPECT
7. The UK’s voting system, First-past-the-post.
Incredibly flawed and succumbs to majority rule
Ends in a two-party system, just like ours.
Here is a video which explains both the system and
flaws very well:

ANOTHER ONE…
8. One “team” is supporting the fact that UK is
democratic - the other is opposing it.
MINI-DEBATE
9. Direct:
Direct voting from the people
Best possible representation of the people (theoretically)
Constant referendums
Representative
MP’s vote on the constituency’s behalf
MP more suited than individuals
MP not necessarily representing their people
DIRECT AND REPRESENTATIVE
10. Their research revealed:
‘This year is the first that less than 50% of the population are
certain to vote.’
‘The amount of which claim to be reasonably knowledgeable
about politics is as low as 39%.’
‘Three out of ten people believe Parliament encourages public
involvement’
‘One in four think the Government works well.’
‘4% of people can recall being involved in political action.
‘6% have taken part in online political engagement’
‘Half of the country’s citizens do nothing but vote.’
THE 2012 HANSARD SURVEY
11. One side believes direct democracy is the better
option for the UK – the other side believes
representative.
MINI-DEBATE!
12. What is a democracy?
What makes the UK democratic?
What makes the UK un-democratic?
QUESTIONS TO RECAP
13. Around 2 sides
“How democratic is the UK?”
In for next Tuesday please!
