Option 1 - verticals at 2m centres without horizontals
• 400x200mm steel oval sections at 2m centres, spanning
13.5m, gravity supported from the ground.
• DGU’s with no transoms at 2m wide by 4.25m high.
• Heat strengthened glass required structurally.
• The glass is too thick to span 3m horizontally, hence the 2m
spacing of the verticals.
• Likely to be a more expensive solution than option 2.
• Primary frame columns at 6m centres. Façade divorced from
primary structure.
• No/limited connections between primary frame and façade
oval sections. The ovals in front of columns could be propped
to the structure behind resulting in the same size ovals but
with thinner wall thicknesses (potential small saving).
• Achieves a vertical aesthetic and a ‘special’ exciting design.
• 500 Brook Drive, Green Park, Reading provides good
precedent.
Curved glass procurement options @ 2m wide x 4.25m high.
• Suppliers include Seele, Fini Glass and Cricursa.
• Roller wave issues with heat strengthened glass, therefore a
risk of poorer optical quality at corners.
• Laminated heat strengthened glass required to both internal
and external panes at ground floor and to ensure safety and
redundancy in the event of breakage. This results in further
issues with optical quality due to the multiple layers of roller
wave.
