Quality in Flat Roofing
What is the problem?
What are the issues?
Both have flat roofs!
Issue No. 1 Everyone is a subcontractor
• Architect
• Project Manager
• Main Contractor
• Sub-Contractor
• Sub-Contractors sub-contractor
• Material manufacturer
• ALL or NONE of the above!
Issue No. 2 Quality vs profit margins
Issue No. 3 Managing designers’ expectations
• Complicated roofs with
innumerable penetrations
• Flat roofs still need a
slope to shed water
• Gutters and outlets
• Flashings
• Material choice
• Appearance
Issue No.4 Workmen are damaging roofs
• Whilst installing the
product
• After installation
• During maintenance
So – we need proper checks and balances

Editor's Notes

  • #3 So what do a green roof and a rabbit hutch have in common? A flat roof   I’ve been working with flat roofs since 1969 and some people still believe that all flat roof leak. But they don’t have to.   The rabbit hutch simply has to keep the rain out.   But the green roof may have to cope with a myriad of penetrations that are required for plant or green energy.   I’ve been invited here today to introduce some of the quality issues that arise with flat roofing. This seminar is aimed at showing you how to correctly specify flat roofing to fit the purpose for which the roof is intended.
  • #4  (i.e. architect was originally fully responsible., now main contractor, they delegate to subcontractor)
  • #5 2. Quality vs profit margins – how do you ensure quality in the designed and installed roof?
