May want to highlight key areas we will touch on – its about product and system choice, but to meet everyone's expectations all 8 steps need to be addressed. Refer audience to the 8 steps guide with their USB stick, and there’s more information about the 8 steps on the microsite at www.singleply.co.uk/perfectroof
It is easy with hindsight to look back on a roofing project and realise that some decisions were made incorrectly, or in the wrong order. Choosing the right flat roof system can be a challenge, but ask the right questions and you’re half way there.
As roofing experts at SIG Design and Technology we follow this sequence all the time – these are the questions we would ask you. Follow these steps to identify the key issues for your waterproofing project. Then you can use your answers to discuss the issues with your roofing specialist, saving you both time and helping you reach the right choice of system for your project.
Before you think about the design requirements of the project, nail down what the employer needs from the roofing system. Does the building have a fixed designed life?
What is the minimum required performance life for the product? (After which replacement should be programmed)
Is there a requirement (planning or otherwise) for a BREEAM or other sustainability rating?
Now the employer requirements are confirmed, we can move on to the design requirements. Here we’ll begin with some key factors and then look at a bit more detail. What aesthetics do you want to deliver? Can flat roof product choice contribute to that?
How could the structure influence the choice of product? Decide this first to avoid over-engineering
Is the roof completely flat? Is drainage internal or external? How best should falls be generated?
Consider the costs of the above factors – extended programme, additional prelims, cost of protection etc.
What height do you have available for depth of roof system? Make sure you avoid jeopardising thresholds.
Door thresholds, cladding, parapets, penetrations. What issues must be dealt with to meet guarantee requirements?
Which systems allows us to achieve all the above most cost efficiently?
Envelope waterproofing is always on the critical path. How much time do you have to deliver waterproofing?
How can appropriate details be installed in the right order to ensure the guarantee can be met?
Roofing can be used as a working platform. Make sure your solution is suitable and properly protected after installation.
Consider the costs of the above factors – extended programme, additional prelims, cost of protection etc.
