OUT PATIENT DEPARTMENT
• This department should be easily accessible to public
• preferably on the ground floor
• It should close to emergency, radiology, laboratory, and pharmacy
• Out patient dept. function 6 days in a week
• There must be a large waiting area with adequate furniture
• Sign boards or display boards should be there.
EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT
• Located in the ground floor, must be easily visible and accessible from entrance .
• Separate entrance for this department
• It should close to the admitting department, medical records and billing section,
radiology department, Lab services, Blood Bank.
• This department work 24X7 and equipped to deal with all sorts of emergencies
Areas :
• Triage , resuscitation room, major trauma Intensive care unit, 24-hour pharmacy,
doctors' room, nurses station, patient waiting area

INTENSIVE CARE UNITS
• This unit provide critical care to patients
• Preferable ICUs in Ground floor with convenient access from OT and
emergency dept. and easy access to wards.
• A minimum of 15 square feet of clean floor area and minimum head
wall width of 1.2 ft./ bed and 8 feet between beds recommended for
ICUs.
OBSTETRIC UNIT
• This dept. provide prenatal care, Care during delivery, postnatal care
and neonatal care.
• The obstetrical unit should be located close to labor room, and
delivery room and also nursery to avoid the risk of infection.
NEWBORN UNIT
• An area of 30 sq ft/ infant with space of at least 3 feet around is
recommended.
• in new born nursey glass walled cubicles, are desirable for each
infant.
• Each cubicle must be equipped with the devices to control
temperature and humidity
PEDIATRIC UNIT
• Equal space should be provided for beds. Provision must be made for
toilets , sleeping (parents or care giver) and storage of personal
belongingness.
• There should be facilities for recreation or a play room.
PSYCHIATRIC UNIT
• Areas :
• Consultation area with staff offices for individual and family care
sessions , therapy area,, patient activities areas.
• The number of beds should be between 20- 24 in order to permit
proper observation and treatment
RADIOLOGY AND LABORATORY SERVICES
• This dept. should preferably on the ground floor and must be easily
accessible to OPD, Causality and the inpatient wards.
• The various services include
• General radiology (X ray), mammography, ultrasound scan,
angiography, Interventional radiology, CT scanning, MRI scanning.
PHARMACY
• Easy access to outpatient dept
• Sufficient space to available for dispensing counter, cash counter, drug
storage, cold storage, circulation space and space for compounding
bulk preparation.
HOSPITAL STORE
• The store should be located centrally to the hospital.
• it should be approachable by supply vehicles and must have a
separate service entrance.
CENTRAL STERILE SUPPLY DEPARTMENT
• CSSD is in charge of processing, issuing, and control of sterile supply
to different units of the hospital . It should be central to operation
theater, emergency department. , ward, maternity suit.
• the supplies includes
• sterile linen, OT packs, sterile articles and other surgical supplies.
HOSPITAL DIETARY DEPARTMENT
• It caters therapeutic diet to patients. It also include canteen facilities
for patient, relatives and staff.
MEDICAL MAINTENANCE AND EMERGENCY
DEPARTMENT
• Mechanical and electrical equipment's installed in the hospital are
given preventive maintenance and if necessary, repair.
