Characteristics of honeypot villages
• Local shops become gift shops or tea rooms
• 1000’s of tourists
• Offers something that pleases large numbers of people
• Businesses move in to capitalise on tourist
• Second homes empty most of the year
Downsides to being a honeypot village
• Crowds and congestion
• Locals move away
• Loss of peace and quiet
• Loss of community
• Noise and environmental pollution (litter)
Village Shop ClosuresVillage Shop Closures
• Closure of village shop causes people to move
• Shops not supported by locals who drive to supermarket
instead
• Shops must sell a wide range of goods to compete with
supermarkets
• Difficult for specialist shops such as butchers to survive
• Shops are closing at a rate of 400 per year
• 1/3 of villages are dependant on neighbouring towns for
basic goods
• Some locals have clubbed together to buy the shop and
run it for themselves
• Very difficult for elderly people to access services away
from their village, especially if they don’t drive
