Male Dominance In Susan Glaspell s Trifles
Mark Twain, in 1888, stated that both marriage and death ought to be welcome: the one promises
happiness, doubtless the other assures it. Under the law during this time period, marriage was
considered a completely different institution than what state it is known to be today. To have a
marriage with several of the same controlling aspects during this day and age would be described
as abusive. In Susan Glaspell s play, Trifles, Glaspell demonstrates male dominance, female
oppression as well as female insubordination during the early 1900 s effectively by revealing the
unhealthy relationship, between John Wright and Minnie Wright that produced a farmhouse
murder. This fatal occurrence is investigated by their neighbor Lewis Hale and wifeMrs.... Show

Wright not only practiced male dominance on his wife, he additionally abused her, (his) hands
aren t always as clean as they should be (Glaspell 1389) Mrs. Hale stated when the men were
briefly looking through and became dissatisfied with the appearance of Minnie s kitchen.
Glaspell exposed the maltreatment early on by providing hints of foreshadowing and thus
allowed the viewer to notice that Mr. Wrights actions were saturated with female oppression.
During the reign over his wife, Mr. Wright destroyed her natural identity and denied Minnie of
her individuality within the marriage. She was no longer cheerful, Mr. Wright killed that too

Cannibalism In A Modest Proposal
Cannibalism is known throughout the world as a morbid taboo. Many critically acclaimed
articles, satirical essays, informational books have given their own view on the subject of
cannibalism. While there are a plethora of authors sharing their views on cannibalism with their
pieces of work, most pale in comparison to these two pieces; A Modest Proposal by Jonathan
Swift, and Eating your friends is the hardest by James Henslin. When comparing and contrasting
these two pieces of astounding work, one must go over all of the facts and statements to fully
comprehend what both authors are trying to convey in their respective pieces. In A Modest

Norway Research Paper
Norway is a country located in northern Europe in a region called Scandinavia. Norway is situated
on the western part of the Scandinavian peninsula. Norway s broad coastline is bathed on three
sides by the seas. To the north lies the Barents Sea, an extension of the Arctic Ocean. To the south
sits the Skagerrak, a strait separating Norwayfrom Denmark and the North Sea. To the west is the
Norwegian Sea, an arm of the North Atlantic Ocean. Aside from Norway s geographic intrigue, the
country has had a long resounding history. The migratory patterns of the earliest inhabitants were
primarily dictated by practical logistics and environmental constraints, whereas, political shifts and
foreign affairs are the current defining factors. The chronicles... Show more content on

Wright, E. (2006) gives an historical account based on the archaeological records which indicate
that the earliest peoples migrated there over the extensive glaciers that once buried the region. At
the end of the last ice age, the glaciers receded exposing more of the landmass freeing additional
resources. This allowed for rapid settlement of Germanic, Gaul, and Roman tribes. These tribes
migrated throughout the region into the mountains and fjords which formed natural boundaries for
those settled areas. By the 8th century there were some 29 small kingdoms that existed in Norway.
Because of Norway s rugged terrain, transportation by water is still vitally important. However,
Norway continues to expand its road network and railways to permit greater access into the country
s interior granting more efficient transportation methods. This has allowed the citizens of Norway
to spread or migrate to areas that were previously inaccessible.
Because Norway has an extensive border neighboring Sweden, Finland, and Russia, immigration
has long been an issue for the Norwegian government. BBC News. (n.d.) reports on how
xenophobic attitudes and political pressure coupled with nationalistic sentiment creates distressing
rhetoric resulting in fear for many Norwegians. Norway has devised plans to deport migrants back
to their country of origin given the country is deemed safe. These policies have come under the

but one year is a poor statistical base from which to draw inferences. Moreover, the board of
trustees had directed Karl to adopt a long term horizon. The Board specifically instructed the
investment manager to give priority to long term results. * The sample of pension funds had a
much larger share invested in equities than did Alpine. Equities performed much better than
bonds. Yet the trustees told Alpine to hold down risk (Alpine s beta was also somewhat
defensive). Alpine should not be held responsible for an asset allocation policy dictated by the

particularly the most recent year, have been bad for bonds, the asset class that Alpine had been
encouraged to hold. Within this asset class, however, Alpine did much better than the index fund.
Moreover, despite the fact that the bond index underperformed both the actuarial return and T bills,
Alpine outperformed both. Alpine s performance within each asset class has been superior on a
risk adjusted basis. Its overall disappointing returns were due to a heavy asset allocation weighting
towards bonds, which was the Board s, not Alpine s, choice. * A trustee may not care about the time

Theme Of Psychoanism In Wuthering Heights
Wuthering Heights, published by Emily BrontГ« in 1847, tells a story of the history of Wuthering
Heights and the tragic love story that precedes it. The two central settings of the work, Thrushcross
Grange, and Wuthering Heights represent Freud s structural model of the human psyche: the id and
the superego. Because Freud s structural model presents the notion that internal conflict is
inevitable, the two settings illustrate the complexities of the human subconscious and the
characters difficulty in navigating them.
In BrontГ« s Wuthering Heights, the namesake setting of the book represents the Freudian id, by
reason of its primitive aspect in the work. In psychoanalytic theory, the id is responsible for the
primal instincts in humans, and almost always seeks immediate fulfillment. Early on in the novel,
the primal nature of Wuthering Heights exposes itself: the Gothic architecture of the house gives
off a sense of foreboding, the inside of the home lacks conventional furnishings, meat hangs from
the kitchen ceiling, and Lockwood, the narrator, notices a pile of dead rabbits in the living room.
Lockwood calls the atmosphere surrounding the house a tumult to which its station is exposed in
stormy weather (5). The description of the home reveals an underlying barbarity to it, similar to the
id. The darkness in the Heights mirrors location of the id in the human subconscious; the id is
located deep in the recesses of the human mind, so many humans who engage the id have no way to
resist it. The tone of the work shrouds the Heights in an antagonistic darkness, and the lack of
conventionality coupled with the turbulent weather serves as a physical manifestation of the id.
In contrast, Thrushcross Grange represents the superego due to the air of controlled refinement
surrounding the home. Freud s model defines the superego as the part of the mind that acts as a
critical self conscious, reflecting social standards learned through parents and teachers. The refined
nature of the house and its adherence to societal standards shows in its physical appearance. As he
described the appearance of Thrushcross Grange in the novel Heathcliff should have thought
[himself] in heaven , (48). Unlike the Heights, the

their roots and their fashion was part of the hip hop culture.
Russell marketing advantages did not stop there. He realized that the clothing that the youth were
wearing was making a statement of who they were. It was then Russell created and promoted the
clothing line Phat Farm. Phat Farm is urban apparel that the urban youth embraced because it
represented their lifestyles. By Russell good marketing strategies more consumers were embracing

urban roots also gave him an advantage with the youth on political issues. Mariotti and Glackin

1. What is meant by the postmodern condition ? Postmodernism can be called a condition of
contemporary culture , it is a modern movement which is strong, ambiguous, very popular and
controversial. However, it is very difficult to explain the term because there is no full clarity what
the term really means. As one can read in The Condition of Postmodernityit is a mine field of
conflicting notions and a battleground of conflicting opinions and political forces . There are so
many interpretations, definitions and evaluations of the term that it is hardly possible to build a

One of the hyperreality images and the world of imagination (Baudrillard writes) is Disneyland,
which is the perfect model of all those confusing orders of simulation. It is primarily a game of
illusions and phantasms. Imaginary world of Disneyland is neither true nor false. It is a space of
regeneration of the world of imagination, reminiscent of a recycling factory. Thus, the world of
the imagination of children and adults is a rubbish, the first great civilization hyper real pollution.
Disneyland is a prototype of this new feature on the mental area. As one can read in Simulacra
and Simulation It is no longer a question of a false representation of reality (ideology) but of
concealing the fact that the real is no longer real, and thus of saving the reality principle .
Another example of flipping a deeper reality by its overriding, and then hiding its deficiencies,
through breaking any relations with it and finally achieving the status of its simulacrum,
completely emancipated from the power of what is real is the Sokal hoax. Sokal saw a marked
reduction in the standards of intellectual reliability in some American humanistic academic circles.
That is why he decided to do the experiment , which consisted in checking whether the leading
American journal dedicated to cultural research will publish a text full of nonsense, if it only sound
good. It turned out

All Quiet On The Western Front Comradeship Analysis
We all share the same fear and the same life;we are nearer than lovers, in a simpler, a harder
way;I could bury my face in them, in these voices, these words that have saved me and will stand
by me . Comradeship is vital in war, because it keeps soldiers human. The theme of comradeship in
All Quiet on the Western Front is embraced when the soldiers rescue each other during battle, stick
together and not become separated, and keep each other s spirits up in the darkest of days.
Soldiers rescuing each other during battle shows comradeship. While fighting on the front line,
Paul becomes separated from his comrades and cannot search for them for fear of being shot
down. It is Kat and Albert who have come out with a stretcher to look for me, (Remarque 227).
Paul s friends coming to search for him shows comradeship because they are being brave and
risking their lives to find their friend. Going out to look for Paul shows that they care about and
value him. During a bombardment, new recruits are traumatized, scared, and helpless because they
do not know what to do, so veterans quickly teach them. We teach them to fling themselves into
holes as quick as lightning... (Remarque 134). The soldiers try to help each other during battle,
which displays comradeship because veterans want to help them live. They aren t doing this to
have bodies to fight, but to save human souls. Comradeship is embraced by soldiers rescuing and
teaching each other during war.
Comradeship is also shown when

Essay on The Impact of Blogging on Middle Eastern Society
Although millions of people around the world depend on a free press to convey them the news of
the day via newspapers, television, and the Internet, many countries in the developing world lack
the climate of openness that contributes to a credible press. It is a chicken and egg problem
(which came first, the free press or the democratic government?), but it is clear that a democratic
government contributes to a free press as much as the converse. Through the fog of decades of
war, the Middle Easthas had particular difficulty sorting out fact from fiction, propaganda from

life during wartime. Capitalizing on the popularity and uncooked nature of Where is Raed?,
other Arab blogs began appearing online. Although early Arab bloggers also used English,
partly because Arabic language word processing technology was poor and partly because writing
in English offered a greater feeling of anonymity, as technology improved, Arabic language
blogs began to appear more with greater frequency (Hamdy, 93). Blogs such as Kefaya! and
Manal and Alaa s Bit Bucket could reach many more readers in the Middle East than English

social upheaval, and political frustration. The blogs often posted shocking amateur video and
photography of police brutality that were not available to major Arab or Western news outlets
because of failure to obtain permission from the host governments to cover protests. As
readership of Arabic language blogs increased, so did the number of blogs themselves, reaching

What Role Does Education Play On Social Equality Or...

Professor Zimmerman Final Essay Topic #1
What role does education play in social equality or inequality?
Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and
to think critically. Intelligence plus character that is the goal of true education. Education has
always been the path to success that open new opportunity doors for an individual in a democratic
society. The government implemented free public education with a sole purpose to ensure that
society continues to strive for equality. This means that studious individuals, with any background,
that puts in their effort and work hard should have a higher advantage of getting a good job and
climbing up the social mobility and economic ladder of success. The education system is a path for
an individual to venture and develop abilities and aptitudes, which in the long run form human
capital that will benefit society as a whole; ultimately, this will diminish the disparities of wealth
and power by allowing the less fortunate an opportunity to add meaning into society. Yet education
may be illustrated as the means of equalization, it has been argued, that the purpose of education is
unsuccessful; instead of overcoming closing the wealth gap, there are substantiation that it actually
reinforces it.

Leukemia
B.Background Info
Leukemia comes from the Greek words for white and blood and is often considered a disease for
children, but actually affects far more adults. This disease is classified as a cancer that usually
begins in the bone marrow provoked by an abnormal rise in the number of white blood cells. The
white blood cells crowd out other blood cell elements such as red blood cells and platelets. The
body starts producing more white cells than it needs, and at the same time many of them do not
mature normally, and tend to live well beyond their normal life period. Even though the body
develops a vast numbers of cells this is not considered a benefit because these leukemia cells are not
capable of battling infection the way they should. Also, they interfere with vital organ functions
such as the production of healthy blood cells. Eventually, red blood cells are unable to supply
oxygen, platelets to ensure correct clotting, normal white blood cells can t deal infection.
Leukemia can be classified as acute or chronic. The cells in acute leukemia start multiplying before

in gold as the mountains of the western slope of the American Continent (Stead). In the mid 1870s,
the King hired Henry Stanley, who was familiar with many parts of Africa, to help him go about
conquering. During the following years Stanley stayed in Africa, talking various tribes into signing
over their lands and rights. After this was completed the King officially took over the Congo,
renaming it the Congo Free State. This was especially ironic because all natives of the country were

Eventually, word started to spread about what was going on. The public had strongly believed that
the natives were benefiting from being civilized through their forced labor. However, between
disgusted Belgian officials and authors such as Joseph Conrad and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the
truth was becoming clearer. In 1904, the Congo Reform Association was founded. Four years
later, King Leopold was made to turn over the Belgian Congo to the Belgian government. Much
of the collected evidence against him was in the form of photographs. The king had managed to
successfully bribe almost every single person who might otherwise have made a witness against
the goings on in the Belgian Congo, as it was renamed after being handed over to the Belgian
government. This did very little good for the people of the Congo; they were still being
overworked, repressed, and denied basic human rights. The situation was more than a little
embarrassing for the king, who disliked his authority being overshadowed. Still, his profit from
the matter was no cause for complaint. Leopold s original investment was said to be somewhere in
the neighborhood of six and a half million dollars; the financial gain was that number, multiplied
many times over. Compared to Belgium s profit, during its time of colonization the population of
the Congo was decreased by

“To Build a Fire” Essay
To Build a Fire is a short story written by Jack London. It is viewed as a masterpiece of naturalist
fiction. To Build a Fire features a miner who is traveling to the Yukon Territory with a dog as his
companion. The miner is the protagonist and the dog companion is called the foil. The dog plays
off of the traits of the protagonist. The central motif of To Build a Fire concerns the struggle of man
versus nature. (Short StoryCriticism) The most argued point in the short story is the reason of the
protagonist death. Some critics believe that it was his lack of intuition and imagination that lead to
his death, while others say that he dies because of panic. (Short Story Criticism) The protagonist in

The miner attempts to start another fire in the open but his efforts are futile. (London 9) The miner
thinks about killing his dog companion for the warmth but is too weak. The man then panics and
begins running until he can run no longer. (London 11) The man dies shortly after many attempts
to run to the camp. These facts lead some critics to believe that the protagonist dies as a result of
panic and the failure of his rational faculties. (Short Story Criticism) The protagonist meets his
demise because of his lack in intuition and imagination. (Short Story Criticism) The miner heads
out to the miners camp after being warned to not travel at such cold temperatures. The miner
displays his lack of intuition many times throughout the story. The miner proves he lacks in
instinct when he says fifty below zero is just uncomfortable and cold. (London 1) The protagonist
travels against the advice of experienced prospects, thinking that he will make it successfully.
(Short Story Criticism) He shows his inexperience further when he thinks it is fifty below when it
s actually seventy five below zero. (London 2)The recurring motif of man versus nature supports
the lack of intuition theory. The secondary main character displays the instinct traits the man does
not have. It shows how the wolf dog senses the severity of the climate while the miner just views it
as uncomfortable and cold. The miner further proves his lack of

technology exploding at an unprecedented rate. Nowadays people find the ease of staying at

An Extreme Near-Death Experience
A woman gets hit by a bus, goes into a coma, and experiences either seeing her body, or drifting
along the beach. This is an extreme near death experience, and this is the type of interaction that
this paper will go over. Not everybody believes in near death experiences, however thanks to
movies and T.V. they are becoming more popular. To understand exactly what an extreme near death
experience is, a person must first know the topic s background. A near death experience is any
close brush with death. This could range from getting shot to falling down the stairs. An extreme
near death experience, in this case, is when a person has an odd occurrence with something they

That there is no such thing as an out of body experience. Many will ask, What about the people
who have had a near death experience, but have not had an out of body encounter? There is a
simple answer. Although this may be true, those people probably did not have an extreme near
death experience. For example, in a piece called My Near Death Experience, by John White
(2014), he has a near death experience in his town s pond. Mr. White dove head first into the
water, hit his head, and blacked out. He wrote that he, had no external perception, no sensory
awareness. I was simply floating idly, feeling more peaceful than I d ever been, (White, 2014).
One could say that Mr. White had a near death experience, but not an extreme one. People would
also say that no one could possibly leave their body without dying first. That is more than likely
false, if one were to ask the world if they believe in the supernatural, the majority would say yes.
There have been many accounts of spiritual encounters, of people leaving their bodies without
even having a near death experience. Another reason is, how could a person be one hundred
percent sure it is not an out of body experience if it did not personally happen to

In the New World, the Negros have had their fair share in being moved from place to place. In
the 1920s , African Americans moved to Harlem, New York to start a new life for themselves.
Harlem became a place where Negros felt free from the segregated South and had liberties to
explore their artistic abilities. This movement was known as the Great Migration and although it
appears this was a major step for African Americans, there was still a lot of work to be done. The

African Americans were portrayed by whites, who would entertain audiences in black face.
While the depiction of blacks was highly demeaning, it opened the door to African American
performers, and by the late 1800s, a number of them were playing to full houses. By the 1920s,
the Jazz Age was in full swing, allowing black musicians and composers to reach wider audiences.
And in the thirties, musicals such as George Gershwin s Porgy and Bess and Eubie Blake s Swing

As the years passed, black performers continued to gain ground. In the 1940s, Broadway

Automobile Safety Essay
People in developed countries all over the world have come to see automobiles as the preferred
way to travel. They allow independence: point to point transportation without having to rely on
others to get where we want to go, to do what we want to do. Long range travel and short range
travel can be undertaken whenever one desires, either alone or with other people. Citizens of the
modern world must often wonder how people ever lived without automobiles. To think that human

it is foreign concept that would not allow the social and business cultureof today to exist.

Simple mistakes, that everyone makes, can lead to great harm. Even the most cautious and agile
driver cannot avoid every possible stalled car, unexpected furniture, careless cell phone user, stray
animal, unexpected construction, or drunken driver on the road.
Automobiles are therefore a huge source of potential injury, and even death. In the year 2001
alone, 37, 795 people lost their lives in automobile accidents in the United States. That is more
people than the populations of many small cities in America. In fact, that is over ten times more
lives lost than were lost in the horrible attack on the World Trade Center in 2001! On top of that,
over two million people were injured in automobile accidents in the same time frame.3 Neither of
these numbers includes the thousands of pedestrians who are killed or injured every year by
automobiles.
Given the risks involved in the use of automobiles much consideration should be given to how to
best make automobiles safer for humans. Often times, however, safety is not the first consideration
in automobile design. Some automobile manufacturers do not even look carefully at safety
considerations until a new product is sent down the crash test line and adjusted until it makes
government safety requirements. On the other hand, some manufacturers start car design with
safety as their first priority.

Allegories And Symbols Of Death In The Seventh Seal
In the movie The Seventh Seal a knight and his squire are returning home from the crusades when
Death appears to the knight and tells him that his time is up. After the knight realizes that he
doesn t want to go, he then challenges Death to a classic game of chess for his life. The rules of
the chess math were simple. The knight gets to keep on living so as long as the chessmatch is going
on and if the knight wins then he is free to go but if he loses he will then have to go with death.
While Death and the knight play a cultural turmoil envelopes with the people around the knight
and squire as they all try to deal with the upheaval the plague has caused. In the movie it was not
as historically accurate. However there were many symbols in the movie that were very helpful.
This film is set in Sweden during the time of the plague. What is called allegories and symbols
of death or is also referred to in art as memento mori, which is another way of reminders of death,
those grew more popular during the time when all members of the Medieval society who were
aware of mortality and felt powerless over their lives and what they have done in their life much
like the knight portrayed in the movie.
Skulls are one of the most popular death symbols employed in art and are often showing up in
painting by Rembrandt and other classic artists. Ingmar Bergman s references to the symbols are
most clearly seen through the church painter who seemed to be preoccupied because he could
stop painting reminders of death . When he was asked about his painting or in that subject matter
he then explained that he makes art about death to make people think . He then later states in the
movie A skull is more interesting than a naked woman . In the movie when the knight was
playing chess with Death that confused me at first before I did a little research on the subject
matter. The game chess which is all about being smarter and outwitting your opponent, so by the

books piled two feet from him. He scooted across the bed to the opposite side and cautiously tested

Essay On First Amendment In School
Growing up in public schools, I remember my 2 grade teacher Ms. Rosa will always tell us
Siempre tiene una voz, nunca se dejan que alguien le digan que aser, es nuestro derecho como
gente que viven en los Estados Unidos. I can safely say that the I learn of the first amendment,
through my early school path,I always said what I felt and never feared of being silenced. When
I heard about the Tucson Unified school district situation, I felt that it was a straight fuck you to
our rights. When a state decides to take action against our own history and tells us what we can
or can t learn is a violation of our first right. The first Amendment should be shown at its
maximum in public schools, since limiting what type of books to read is creating a iron wall in
our public schools. When I say Iron wall, it reminds me on how the state is trying to create a
concentration camp with our education, limiting the things we can learn. Additionally, I feel that
teachers should have the right to speak out on what really happen to our ancestors... Show more

The Lack Of Female Education Contraception
The possibility that a young woman does not wish to have children or does not feel ready upon
marriage is essentially ignored in most developing nations. Should a woman wish to postpone
childbearing, she may encounter difficulties finding contraceptive methods. The most commonly
reported reasons for unmet need [for contraception] are lack of knowledge, health concerns, and
social disapproval (Casterline Sinding, 2000 as cited in Levine et al., 2006). The lack of female
education about contraception in countries where it would be of greatest aid is a major indicator
of why maternal mortality is still such a prevalent issue. In American, woman have to get
prescriptions for contraceptives from their health care providers , and there is a multitude of
information available to women who wish to use contraception (Hansman, 2014). Many women in
poor areas of developing nations do not have regular access to health care providers, resulting in
both lack of information and materials to implement family planning practices. Contraception in
general is a delicate matter due to the stigma attached in societies where high fertility is culturally
valued. Reactions from government policy [or] the way a husband might perceive his wife s use of
birth controlcan be deterrents for a woman to abandon her own desires to refrain from pregnancy
(Hansman, 2014). It can be argued that even if proper contraceptive methods were provided to
women in developing nations, the actual usage is

The Pros And Cons Of White Collar Crime
Criminals walk amongst us everyday. When people hear the word criminal, murderer , robber ,
and arsonist , are what most people think of. No one thinks about the CEO of a billion dollar
company, the everyday pharmacist, or even a trusted personal financial advisor. This is due to
the respectability and high social status these occupations hold (Temchenko, 2016). Of the many
crimes committed every year, white collar crimes are one of the most highest crimes committed
because they are overlooked. On July 28, 2016 , 14 year old Bresha Meadows, who had no prior
record of violence, was arrested and potentially up for a life sentence in prison for saving her
family from more domestic abuse by shooting her father (Jeltsen, 2016) . In 2003 the former
chairman and chief executive of MCSi Michael E. Peppel, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy,
money laundering and filing false documents with the Securities and Exchange Commission was
only sentenced to spend seven days in prison because Peppel was a remarkably good man . The
charges against Peppel carry a minimum 8 year sentence (Henning, 2013). Sentencing disparities
between white collar crimeversus street crime is a crime within itself and some form of justice
needs to be served. Sentencing disparity is defined as a circumstance where alike cases are not
treated similarly or different cases are not treated differently (Council of Europe, 1989). An
example would be two men who each stole the same amount of items. Neither have

Dr King Qualities
Understanding what it takes to be a great leader Anyone has the potential to be a leader, but it
takes a strong and willing person to be a great leader. First and foremost a leader must be willing
to take responsibility, for he s own action and the action of others, and be willing to step up to
the plate at all times. He must be willing to listen at time, for advice from those who he leads.
Great leaders take a firm stand for their followers, they never gives up on achieving their goals,
they are dedicated and they push for excellent. They stay focus, they embrace the needs and wants
of other people, they commit to people who stand with them, and those who are committed to
them. People that are leader are normally well organized, considerate of others and will set the
pace by example. Some people believe that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding
conundrum of life and history there is such a thing as being too late. Procrastination is still the
thief of time (King, 1967, p. 191). (EDWARDS, 2010). Yes, I agree that Dr. King was a great

Examples Of Non Traditional Families In The Bean Trees
Miles Cruger 11/7/2017 ALA Pd. 7
Non Traditional Families in
The Bean Trees
Families come in many forms, and family may not be considered traditional can still have a deep
seated relationship, much of the time more so than traditional families. Barbara Kingsolver s novel
The Bean Trees makes non traditional families very prevalent, showing their supportive and
functional nature. A traditional familyis a family that has a mother, father, and children, whereas a
non traditional family varies from that set. Barbara shows the reader that non traditional families
can function and support the members of the family just as well, if not better than traditional
families. Alice and Taylor have a tight knit and close relationship, one that is supportive at its
nature. Alice has supported Taylor is so many ways throughout her lifetime. On page 2, we are
told that When Taylor was a young child, she would catch small fish, and Alice would act like it
was huge, and cook them up for dinner. This is a great example of how they support each other.
Without anyone else, Alice is boosting Taylor s self confidence, and supporting her, arguably better
than traditional families, like all mothers should. They function like most families, even though all
they have is each other. On page 5, Alice consoles Taylor on techniques for getting the job at the
hospital. This

Sexual Violence In College Essay
Within the last few years conversations about a long surviving issue have resurfaced, managing to
draw the attention of hibernating authorities of higher education institutions across the United
States. A stream of alleged cases of Title IX violations leading to investigations at some of the most
prestigious universities across the country have opened up a dialogue between students and the
administration about sexual violence on college campuses. The recently conducted campus climate
survey on sexual assaultand sexual misconduct by the Association of American Universities (AAU)
reflects this growing concern among students over the issue of sexual violence on campus and the
administration s ability to handle these cases. The survey shows the tragic yet unsurprising reality
of higher educationinstitutions where roughly 1 in 5 undergraduate women experience sexual
assault on college campuses within their first year. While these chilling statistics depend on gender,
class year, and education level (graduate versus undergraduate students) and vary somewhat from
one universityto another, even a small number of sexual violence crimes should be deemed
unacceptable. In the words of our... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ubiquity of sexual violence in society, and indeed in these universities, is belied by these
figures as they deny the intrinsic nature of sexual violence in our culture. Dr. Karns attempts to
remedy underreporting of sexual assault by integrating the expected number of cases of sexual
assault, generated by accounting for gender ratio of each institution and national statistics on
frequency of sexual assault, in her data along with the actually reported incidents. Consequently, we
expect a more realistic representation of the frequency of sexual assaults and the underreporting of
this crime on college campuses through Dr. Karns s

Essay about Metaphysical Poetry
Metaphysical poets use startling juxtapositions in their poetry to create a greater significance in
their arguments and intended meanings throughout the poem. John Donne is said to be the
unsurpassed metaphysical poet, metaphysical poetry being poetry relating to a group of 17 century
English poets whose verse is typified by an intellectually arduous style, admitting extended
metaphors and comparing very disparate things. In 17th century Englandnew discoveries were
being made and social customs such as men being the dominant over women still applied.
Through Donne s poetry we can see that he is goaded and confused by the new discoveries and the
social customs avert him from reaching his desires. This is incalculably recognized in his... Show

These words help the reader to understand Donne s meaning; that new things have disrupted the old.
Donne reflects his one and only, with the most beautiful imagery in which he can imagine. Like
love itself, the woman in Donne s verse is addressed and praised in exaggerated terms. In the Sunne
Rising her eyes shine brighter than the sun, if her eyes had not blinded thine . She is compared to
the India s of spice and Myne , she is all States, and all Princes and All wealth alchimie . The India
s spice and Myne relates to the east and west Indians, in the 17th century , the Indian s kept a source
of the world s most valued materials; spices, metals and jewels. All the exaggerated imagery of
the woman helps to stress just how exceptional she is. It helps to shape his meaning through the
poem, we see this grand, exaggerated imagery and it helps us to envision just how beautiful she is,
why she is the focus of the poem.
The movement through each stanza in the Sunne Rising also holds a number of dramatic contrasts.
Donne wants the reader to see just how exceptional his lover is, and through each stanza he uses
dramatic contrasts to help assert his lover in different ways. The first stanza conveys egotism and
insolence towards the sun and the pace and rhythm is very hasty. This stanza begins with a series of

Carolina Maria De Jesus s Child Of The Dark
The novel, Child of the Dark, details the stories of a poor woman and her struggles in life. The
book is a diary written by Carolina Maria de Jesus where she writes about her experiences living in
the favelas in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Carolina s diary details the events in her life that took place
between the years of 1955 and 1960. Carolina documents the everyday lives of people who live in
the favelas and details what life is like for poor people in Brazil. Carolina s diary gives a good
depiction of life in the favela.
During the time the novel was written, Carolina was a forty one year old Brazilian woman who
lived in the favelas of SГЈo Paulo, Brazil. The living conditions of the favelas are appalling. There

Carolina uses writing as a way to escape her life in the favelas, with her words being a means to
express herself. Many of the others living in the favela use violence as way to express how they
feel and engage in arguments and fights. Carolina does not resort to violence and instead chooses
to use her words and her ability to write as a way to defend herself. She threatens to put people in
her book when they wrong her.
Carolina s gender, race, and social location make her a key study because it can reflect on Brazil
as a country and demonstrate how the country operates. Carolina s poor living conditions and
struggles as a woman shows how other women of color may live in Brazil. Carolina s life and the
events that are portrayed in her diary give insight to the politics of Brazil and how the poor are
treated.
In conclusion, reading about Carolina s life has had a huge impact on my learnings of Brazil. While
reading this book, I was able to reflect on what we learned and discussed about life in the favelas in
class. When I hear of Brazil, I always hear of the wealthy places, pretty women and beautiful sites
to visit. However, the favelas and life of the poor people living in Brazil is rarely mentioned and
talked about. Reading Carolina s diary gave me a different image of the country and showed Brazil
in another light. Carolina s diary gave me more insight on what the daily life of a favelado is like
and what people who live in the favelas experience on a daily

Nefertari Vivian Case Summary
Determined and resilient are the first words that come to mind describing Nefertari; He is not

recommendation for Nefertari Vivian. An intelligent and hard working student, Nefertari
consistently focuses on being successful in her academics. She is a well rounded and adjusted
individual with an apparent positive attitude.
In the beginning of her high school career, Nefertari did not always give priority status to her
academics. She struggled to earn high grades, but this was not from lack of ability. She recognized
the seriousness of her academics towards the end of her junior year. At that point she realized that

  • 3. Male Dominance In Susan Glaspell s Trifles Mark Twain, in 1888, stated that both marriage and death ought to be welcome: the one promises happiness, doubtless the other assures it. Under the law during this time period, marriage was considered a completely different institution than what state it is known to be today. To have a marriage with several of the same controlling aspects during this day and age would be described as abusive. In Susan Glaspell s play, Trifles, Glaspell demonstrates male dominance, female oppression as well as female insubordination during the early 1900 s effectively by revealing the unhealthy relationship, between John Wright and Minnie Wright that produced a farmhouse murder. This fatal occurrence is investigated by their neighbor Lewis Hale and wifeMrs.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Glaspell exposed the maltreatment early on by providing hints of foreshadowing and thus allowed the viewer to notice that Mr. Wrights actions were saturated with female oppression. During the reign over his wife, Mr. Wright destroyed her natural identity and denied Minnie of her individuality within the marriage. She was no longer cheerful, Mr. Wright killed that too (Glaspell 1393)not to mention the songbird she related to. Mr. Wright killed her spirit and the bird, which Minnie adored, that Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters discovered. As a human she was suppressed and denied freedom. Norway s broad coastline is bathed on three sides by the seas. To the north lies the Barents Sea, an extension of the Arctic Ocean. To the south sits the Skagerrak, a strait separating Norwayfrom Denmark and the North Sea. To the west is the Norwegian Sea, an arm of the North Atlantic Ocean. Aside from Norway s geographic intrigue, the country has had a long resounding history. The migratory patterns of the earliest inhabitants were primarily dictated by practical logistics and environmental constraints, whereas, political shifts and foreign affairs are the current defining factors. The chronicles... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Wright, E. (2006) gives an historical account based on the archaeological records which indicate that the earliest peoples migrated there over the extensive glaciers that once buried the region. At the end of the last ice age, the glaciers receded exposing more of the landmass freeing additional resources. This allowed for rapid settlement of Germanic, Gaul, and Roman tribes. These tribes migrated throughout the region into the mountains and fjords which formed natural boundaries for those settled areas. By the 8th century there were some 29 small kingdoms that existed in Norway. Because of Norway s rugged terrain, transportation by water is still vitally important. However, Norway continues to expand its road network and railways to permit greater access into the country s interior granting more efficient transportation methods. This has allowed the citizens of Norway to spread or migrate to areas that were previously inaccessible. Because Norway has an extensive border neighboring Sweden, Finland, and Russia, immigration has long been an issue for the Norwegian government. BBC News. (n.d.) reports on how xenophobic attitudes and political pressure coupled with nationalistic sentiment creates distressing rhetoric resulting in fear for many Norwegians. Norway has devised plans to deport migrants back to their country of origin given the country is deemed safe. These policies have come under the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Moreover, the board of trustees had directed Karl to adopt a long term horizon. The Board specifically instructed the investment manager to give priority to long term results. * The sample of pension funds had a much larger share invested in equities than did Alpine. Equities performed much better than bonds. Yet the trustees told Alpine to hold down risk (Alpine s beta was also somewhat defensive). Alpine should not be held responsible for an asset allocation policy dictated by the client. * Alpine s alpha measures its risk adjusted performance compared to the market: a = 13.3% [7.5% + 0.90(13.8% 7.5%)] = 0.13% (actually above zero) * Note that the last 5 years, and particularly the most recent year, have been bad for bonds, the asset class that Alpine had been encouraged to hold. Within this asset class, however, Alpine did much better than the index fund. Moreover, despite the fact that the bond index underperformed both the actuarial return and T bills, Alpine outperformed both. Alpine s performance within each asset class has been superior on a risk adjusted basis. Its overall disappointing returns were due to a heavy asset allocation weighting towards bonds, which was the Board s, not Alpine s, choice. * A trustee may not care about the time weighted return, but ... • 8. Theme Of Psychoanism In Wuthering Heights Wuthering Heights, published by Emily BrontГ« in 1847, tells a story of the history of Wuthering Heights and the tragic love story that precedes it. The two central settings of the work, Thrushcross Grange, and Wuthering Heights represent Freud s structural model of the human psyche: the id and the superego. Because Freud s structural model presents the notion that internal conflict is inevitable, the two settings illustrate the complexities of the human subconscious and the characters difficulty in navigating them. In BrontГ« s Wuthering Heights, the namesake setting of the book represents the Freudian id, by reason of its primitive aspect in the work. In psychoanalytic theory, the id is responsible for the primal instincts in humans, and almost always seeks immediate fulfillment. Early on in the novel, the primal nature of Wuthering Heights exposes itself: the Gothic architecture of the house gives off a sense of foreboding, the inside of the home lacks conventional furnishings, meat hangs from the kitchen ceiling, and Lockwood, the narrator, notices a pile of dead rabbits in the living room. Lockwood calls the atmosphere surrounding the house a tumult to which its station is exposed in stormy weather (5). The description of the home reveals an underlying barbarity to it, similar to the id. The darkness in the Heights mirrors location of the id in the human subconscious; the id is located deep in the recesses of the human mind, so many humans who engage the id have no way to resist it. The tone of the work shrouds the Heights in an antagonistic darkness, and the lack of conventionality coupled with the turbulent weather serves as a physical manifestation of the id. In contrast, Thrushcross Grange represents the superego due to the air of controlled refinement surrounding the home. Freud s model defines the superego as the part of the mind that acts as a critical self conscious, reflecting social standards learned through parents and teachers. The refined nature of the house and its adherence to societal standards shows in its physical appearance. As he described the appearance of Thrushcross Grange in the novel Heathcliff should have thought [himself] in heaven , (48). Unlike the Heights, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Postmodernism can be called a condition of contemporary culture , it is a modern movement which is strong, ambiguous, very popular and controversial. Another example of flipping a deeper reality by its overriding, and then hiding its deficiencies, through breaking any relations with it and finally achieving the status of its simulacrum, completely emancipated from the power of what is real is the Sokal hoax. • 11. All Quiet On The Western Front Comradeship Analysis We all share the same fear and the same life;we are nearer than lovers, in a simpler, a harder way;I could bury my face in them, in these voices, these words that have saved me and will stand by me . Comradeship is vital in war, because it keeps soldiers human. The theme of comradeship in All Quiet on the Western Front is embraced when the soldiers rescue each other during battle, stick together and not become separated, and keep each other s spirits up in the darkest of days. Soldiers rescuing each other during battle shows comradeship. While fighting on the front line, Paul becomes separated from his comrades and cannot search for them for fear of being shot down. It is Kat and Albert who have come out with a stretcher to look for me, (Remarque 227). Paul s friends coming to search for him shows comradeship because they are being brave and risking their lives to find their friend. Going out to look for Paul shows that they care about and value him. During a bombardment, new recruits are traumatized, scared, and helpless because they do not know what to do, so veterans quickly teach them. We teach them to fling themselves into holes as quick as lightning... (Remarque 134). The soldiers try to help each other during battle, which displays comradeship because veterans want to help them live. They aren t doing this to have bodies to fight, but to save human souls. Comradeship is embraced by soldiers rescuing and teaching each other during war. Comradeship is also shown when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Capitalizing on the popularity and uncooked nature of Where is Raed?, other Arab blogs began appearing online. Although early Arab bloggers also used English, partly because Arabic language word processing technology was poor and partly because writing in English offered a greater feeling of anonymity, as technology improved, Arabic language blogs began to appear more with greater frequency (Hamdy, 93). Blogs such as Kefaya! and Manal and Alaa s Bit Bucket could reach many more readers in the Middle East than English language blogs and focused on themes popular with readers, such as government repression, social upheaval, and political frustration. The blogs often posted shocking amateur video and photography of police brutality that were not available to major Arab or Western news outlets because of failure to obtain permission from the host governments to cover protests. • 13. What Role Does Education Play On Social Equality Or... Jimmy ChoySOC 1005 FTRB Professor Zimmerman Final Essay Topic #1 What role does education play in social equality or inequality? Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character that is the goal of true education. Education has always been the path to success that open new opportunity doors for an individual in a democratic society. The government implemented free public education with a sole purpose to ensure that society continues to strive for equality. This means that studious individuals, with any background, that puts in their effort and work hard should have a higher advantage of getting a good job and climbing up the social mobility and economic ladder of success. The education system is a path for an individual to venture and develop abilities and aptitudes, which in the long run form human capital that will benefit society as a whole; ultimately, this will diminish the disparities of wealth and power by allowing the less fortunate an opportunity to add meaning into society. Yet education may be illustrated as the means of equalization, it has been argued, that the purpose of education is unsuccessful; instead of overcoming closing the wealth gap, there are substantiation that it actually reinforces it. • 19. Chronic Leukemia Research Paper A.Disease/ Disorder Leukemia B.Background Info Leukemia comes from the Greek words for white and blood and is often considered a disease for children, but actually affects far more adults. This disease is classified as a cancer that usually begins in the bone marrow provoked by an abnormal rise in the number of white blood cells. The white blood cells crowd out other blood cell elements such as red blood cells and platelets. The body starts producing more white cells than it needs, and at the same time many of them do not mature normally, and tend to live well beyond their normal life period. Even though the body develops a vast numbers of cells this is not considered a benefit because these leukemia cells are not capable of battling infection the way they should. Also, they interfere with vital organ functions such as the production of healthy blood cells. Eventually, red blood cells are unable to supply oxygen, platelets to ensure correct clotting, normal white blood cells can t deal infection. Leukemia can be classified as acute or chronic. King Leopold and the Belgian Congo Essay King Leopold and the Belgian Congo It is widely debated why exactly King Leopold decided to conquer the Congo, but the general consensus seems to be that it was out of the belief that the highlands of the Congo may be as rich in gold as the mountains of the western slope of the American Continent (Stead). In the mid 1870s, the King hired Henry Stanley, who was familiar with many parts of Africa, to help him go about conquering. During the following years Stanley stayed in Africa, talking various tribes into signing over their lands and rights. After this was completed the King officially took over the Congo, renaming it the Congo Free State. This was especially ironic because all natives of the country were either forced to give up ... The public had strongly believed that the natives were benefiting from being civilized through their forced labor. However, between disgusted Belgian officials and authors such as Joseph Conrad and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the truth was becoming clearer. In 1904, the Congo Reform Association was founded. Four years later, King Leopold was made to turn over the Belgian Congo to the Belgian government. Much of the collected evidence against him was in the form of photographs. The king had managed to successfully bribe almost every single person who might otherwise have made a witness against the goings on in the Belgian Congo, as it was renamed after being handed over to the Belgian government. This did very little good for the people of the Congo; they were still being overworked, repressed, and denied basic human rights. The situation was more than a little embarrassing for the king, who disliked his authority being overshadowed. Still, his profit from the matter was no cause for complaint. Leopold s original investment was said to be somewhere in the neighborhood of six and a half million dollars; the financial gain was that number, multiplied many times over. For example, in a piece called My Near Death Experience, by John White (2014), he has a near death experience in his town s pond. • 38. Essay on The Ghost Night in the country came like a cloak so that everything outside disappeared. No street lights and a new moon, whose light couldn t penetrate the many trees, may have had something to do with that. From any window, the only thing Nate saw when he looked outside was a thick blanket of black and the occasional flare of a firefly. At nine p.m. he excused himself from his grandparents company as they watched Secrets of the Dead in their sitting room. He had some dead people s secrets to uncover himself. He went to the library and carried to his room the two boxes of books he and the twins had started on earlier. He intended to look through them late into the night and make up for their lack of progress. But soon his eyes were too droopy to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They landed on top of each other in a straight line about six feet in length. Shock and fear glued Nate to the bed as the stacking continued until he had to look up to see the last rows. Some unseen force now directed more books to leave their box and form a new line, connecting to the first row at a thirty degree angle. The thumping noise softened as the stack rose higher into the air. Another pile of books soon stretched over Nate s head. The new stack was only a fourth the length of the first row but just as high. Eerily, Nate s bedroom door opened with the crack he had come to expect from the old hardware. But never would he have imagined the line of books that floated through the door like they were dangling from invisible strings. The set of encyclopedias he recognized from the library drifted over to the first stack and began a third line, angled at thirty degree again so that it made an upside down V with the other angled line. The new row also stopped at one fourth the length of the original row. More books crowned the stack until it reached as high as the first two rows. Nate sat unmoving, hardly breathing and hardly able to believe his eyes. But it seemed the last row of books put an end to the construction. No more books floated through the door or from boxes. The room was quiet as Nate eyed the partition of books piled two feet from him. He scooted across the bed to the opposite side and cautiously tested the floor, afraid ... I can safely say that the I learn of the first amendment, through my early school path,I always said what I felt and never feared of being silenced. When a state decides to take action against our own history and tells us what we can or can t learn is a violation of our first right. The first Amendment should be shown at its maximum in public schools, since limiting what type of books to read is creating a iron wall in our public schools. • 40. The Lack Of Female Education Contraception The possibility that a young woman does not wish to have children or does not feel ready upon marriage is essentially ignored in most developing nations. Should a woman wish to postpone childbearing, she may encounter difficulties finding contraceptive methods. The most commonly reported reasons for unmet need [for contraception] are lack of knowledge, health concerns, and social disapproval (Casterline Sinding, 2000 as cited in Levine et al., 2006). The lack of female education about contraception in countries where it would be of greatest aid is a major indicator of why maternal mortality is still such a prevalent issue. In American, woman have to get prescriptions for contraceptives from their health care providers , and there is a multitude of information available to women who wish to use contraception (Hansman, 2014). Many women in poor areas of developing nations do not have regular access to health care providers, resulting in both lack of information and materials to implement family planning practices. Contraception in general is a delicate matter due to the stigma attached in societies where high fertility is culturally valued. Reactions from government policy [or] the way a husband might perceive his wife s use of birth controlcan be deterrents for a woman to abandon her own desires to refrain from pregnancy (Hansman, 2014). It can be argued that even if proper contraceptive methods were provided to women in developing nations, the actual usage is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 42. The Pros And Cons Of White Collar Crime Criminals walk amongst us everyday. When people hear the word criminal, murderer , robber , and arsonist , are what most people think of. No one thinks about the CEO of a billion dollar company, the everyday pharmacist, or even a trusted personal financial advisor. This is due to the respectability and high social status these occupations hold (Temchenko, 2016). Of the many crimes committed every year, white collar crimes are one of the most highest crimes committed because they are overlooked. On July 28, 2016 , 14 year old Bresha Meadows, who had no prior record of violence, was arrested and potentially up for a life sentence in prison for saving her family from more domestic abuse by shooting her father (Jeltsen, 2016) . In 2003 the former chairman and chief executive of MCSi Michael E. Peppel, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy, money laundering and filing false documents with the Securities and Exchange Commission was only sentenced to spend seven days in prison because Peppel was a remarkably good man . The charges against Peppel carry a minimum 8 year sentence (Henning, 2013). Sentencing disparities between white collar crimeversus street crime is a crime within itself and some form of justice needs to be served. Sentencing disparity is defined as a circumstance where alike cases are not treated similarly or different cases are not treated differently (Council of Europe, 1989). Barbara Kingsolver s novel The Bean Trees makes non traditional families very prevalent, showing their supportive and functional nature. • 46. Sexual Violence In College Essay Within the last few years conversations about a long surviving issue have resurfaced, managing to draw the attention of hibernating authorities of higher education institutions across the United States. A stream of alleged cases of Title IX violations leading to investigations at some of the most prestigious universities across the country have opened up a dialogue between students and the administration about sexual violence on college campuses. The recently conducted campus climate survey on sexual assaultand sexual misconduct by the Association of American Universities (AAU) reflects this growing concern among students over the issue of sexual violence on campus and the administration s ability to handle these cases. The survey shows the tragic yet unsurprising reality of higher educationinstitutions where roughly 1 in 5 undergraduate women experience sexual assault on college campuses within their first year. John Donne is said to be the unsurpassed metaphysical poet, metaphysical poetry being poetry relating to a group of 17 century English poets whose verse is typified by an intellectually arduous style, admitting extended metaphors and comparing very disparate things. In 17th century Englandnew discoveries were being made and social customs such as men being the dominant over women still applied.
