In 1910, director D.W. Griffith filmed the first movie in Hollywood, California called In Old California. He and his acting troupe enjoyed filming in Hollywood due to the warm climate and varied scenery. Many other filmmakers soon moved to Hollywood to avoid fees imposed by Thomas Edison's movie patents. Griffith's 1915 film Birth of a Nation pioneered techniques that still influence filmmaking today.

![ In early 1910, director D. W. Griffith was sent by the Biograph Company to the
west coast with his acting troupe, consisting of actors Blanche Sweet, Lillian
Gish, Mary Pickford,Lionel Barrymore and others. They started filming on a
vacant lot near Georgia Street in downtown Los Angeles. While there, the
company decided to explore new territories, traveling several miles north to
Hollywood, a little village that was friendly and enjoyed the movie company
filming there. Griffith then filmed the first movie ever shot in Hollywood, In
Old California, a Biograph melodrama about California in the 19th century,
when it belonged to Mexico. Griffith stayed there for months and made several
films before returning to New York. After hearing about Griffith's success in
Hollywood, in 1913, many movie-makers headed west to avoid the fees imposed
by Thomas Edison, who owned patents on the movie-making process.[9]
In Los Angeles, the studios and Hollywood grew. BeforeWorld War I, movies
were made in several U.S. cities, but filmmakers gravitated to southern
California as the industry developed. They were attracted by the mild climate
and reliable sunlight, which made it possible to film movies outdoors year-round,
and by the varied scenery that was available. There are several starting
points for cinema (particularly American cinema), but it was Griffith's
controversial 1915 epic Birth of a Nation that pioneered the worldwide filming

Motion Pictures Presentation
Animated films were introduced after 1896 and included clay puppets and cut-out animations. Thomas Edison and Edwin Porter produced one of the earliest films in 1901 showing a comic scene. The Library of Congress began collecting motion pictures in 1893. In the 1920s, silent films were popular and played with live orchestral music. Some notable silent films included The Parade in 1919 and The Kid in 1921 starring Charles Chaplin. The Jazz Singer in 1929 was one of the first widely distributed sound films and also the first musical film to win an Oscar.

Animated films were introduced after 1896 and included clay puppets and cut-out animations. Thomas Edison and Edwin Porter produced one of the earliest films in 1901 showing a comic scene. The Library of Congress began collecting motion pictures in 1893. In the 1920s, silent films were popular and played with live orchestral music. Some notable silent films included The Parade in 1919 and The Kid in 1921 starring Charles Chaplin. The Jazz Singer in 1929 was one of the first widely distributed sound films and also the first musical film to win an Oscar.

End-to-end pipeline agility - Berlin Buzzwords 2024
We describe how we achieve high change agility in data engineering by eliminating the fear of breaking downstream data pipelines through end-to-end pipeline testing, and by using schema metaprogramming to safely eliminate boilerplate involved in changes that affect whole pipelines.
A quick poll on agility in changing pipelines from end to end indicated a huge span in capabilities. For the question "How long time does it take for all downstream pipelines to be adapted to an upstream change," the median response was 6 months, but some respondents could do it in less than a day. When quantitative data engineering differences between the best and worst are measured, the span is often 100x-1000x, sometimes even more.
A long time ago, we suffered at Spotify from fear of changing pipelines due to not knowing what the impact might be downstream. We made plans for a technical solution to test pipelines end-to-end to mitigate that fear, but the effort failed for cultural reasons. We eventually solved this challenge, but in a different context. In this presentation we will describe how we test full pipelines effectively by manipulating workflow orchestration, which enables us to make changes in pipelines without fear of breaking downstream.
Making schema changes that affect many jobs also involves a lot of toil and boilerplate. Using schema-on-read mitigates some of it, but has drawbacks since it makes it more difficult to detect errors early. We will describe how we have rejected this tradeoff by applying schema metaprogramming, eliminating boilerplate but keeping the protection of static typing, thereby further improving agility to quickly modify data pipelines without fear.

Dynamic policy enforcement is becoming an increasingly important topic in today’s world where data privacy and compliance is a top priority for companies, individuals, and regulators alike. In these slides, we discuss how LinkedIn implements a powerful dynamic policy enforcement engine, called ViewShift, and integrates it within its data lake. We show the query engine architecture and how catalog implementations can automatically route table resolutions to compliance-enforcing SQL views. Such views have a set of very interesting properties: (1) They are auto-generated from declarative data annotations. (2) They respect user-level consent and preferences (3) They are context-aware, encoding a different set of transformations for different use cases (4) They are portable; while the SQL logic is only implemented in one SQL dialect, it is accessible in all engines.

- 2. In early 1910, director D. W. Griffith was sent by the Biograph Company to the west coast with his acting troupe, consisting of actors Blanche Sweet, Lillian Gish, Mary Pickford,Lionel Barrymore and others. They started filming on a vacant lot near Georgia Street in downtown Los Angeles. While there, the company decided to explore new territories, traveling several miles north to Hollywood, a little village that was friendly and enjoyed the movie company filming there. Griffith then filmed the first movie ever shot in Hollywood, In Old California, a Biograph melodrama about California in the 19th century, when it belonged to Mexico. Griffith stayed there for months and made several films before returning to New York. After hearing about Griffith's success in Hollywood, in 1913, many movie-makers headed west to avoid the fees imposed by Thomas Edison, who owned patents on the movie-making process.[9] In Los Angeles, the studios and Hollywood grew. BeforeWorld War I, movies were made in several U.S. cities, but filmmakers gravitated to southern California as the industry developed. They were attracted by the mild climate and reliable sunlight, which made it possible to film movies outdoors year-round, and by the varied scenery that was available. There are several starting points for cinema (particularly American cinema), but it was Griffith's controversial 1915 epic Birth of a Nation that pioneered the worldwide filming vocabulary that still dominates celluloid to this day.
- 5. Development — The first stage in which the ideas for the film are created, rights to books/plays are bought etc., and the screenplay is written. Financing for the project has to be sought and green lit. Pre-production—Preparations are made for the shoot, in which cast and film crew are hired, locations are selected, and sets are built. Production—The raw elements for the film are recorded during the film shoot. Post-production—The images, sound, and visual effects of the recorded film are edited. Distribution—The finished film is distributed and screened in cinemas and/or released to home video.
- 6. The Academy Awards, affectionately known as the Oscars, are the oldest, best known, most influential, most prestigious, and famous of film awards. The awards (and gold-plated statuettes) have been presented annually (the first awards ceremony was held in May of 1929) by a non-profit professional organization - the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), based in Beverly Hills, California, and founded in 1927. Pricewaterhouse (now PricewaterhouseCoopers) has managed the Academy Awards balloting process since 1935 - all but the first six years of the Oscars. Ever since 1941, when their now-famous confidential envelope system was introduced, marking the first year of complete secrecy, "the Envelope Please" has become a familiar phrase that evokes the thought of the Academy Awards® ceremony.

This is the revelation of a film shot in a circular mask, which gradually gets larger till it expands beyond the frame. Other shaped slits were used, including vertical and diagonal apertures. A new idea taken over from still photography was "soft focus”. This began in 1915, with some shots being intentionally thrown out of focus for expressive effect, as in Mary Pickford's Fanchon the Cricket. It was during this period that camera effects intended to convey the subjective feelings of characters in a film really began to be established. These could now be done as Point of View (POV) shots, as in Sidney Drew's The Story of the Glove (1915), where a wobbly hand-held shot of a door and its keyhole represents the POV of a drunken man. The use of anamorphic (in the general sense of distorted shape) images first appears in these years with Abel Gance's la Folie du Docteur Tube (The Madness of Dr. Tube). In this film the effect of a drug administered to a group of people was suggested by shooting the scenes reflected in a distorting mirror of the fair-ground type.
