Effects of Regional Growth in Mexico
Mexico, like many established nations, has had several economic, political, and social
changes in its history. The country has been subject to multiple wars, trouble with drug cartels,
crime, and in several regions extreme poverty. One war in particular, the Mexican Revolution
(from 1910-1917) led to significant changes in the country's economic and social structure that
can still be seen today. Most recently, in 1994, the country struggled with a collapsing economy.
Mexico is no stranger to aversion, but this may be what makes its people so resilient to change.
Mexico is the United State's main partner in trade (WSJ), which make sense considering
the geographical location of the country. In fact, over 90% of Mexico's exports are to Canada
and The United States (cia.gov). The nation's economy is extremely export-oriented.
Approximately 90% of the country's trade is made under Free Trade Agreements (FTSs) with
over 40 countries. After the economic collapse, Mexico joined the North American Free Trade
Agreement (NAFTA), which streamlined the trade with the US and Canada.
Recently, President Obama has come under much scrutiny for policies regarding
immigration of Mexican citizens, particularly children, to the United States. Nearly 63,000
children have been caught crossing the United States border alone since October, 2013, which is
double since 2012 (Park, 2014). The president has been quoted saying that the surge of children
is an “urgent humanitarian situation,” and allowing children to stay is "necessary" (Park, 2014).
Obama issued $3.7 billion in emergency funds in July to help alleviate the situation, which was
also met with controversy.
There is a common misconception in the United States on where the children are coming
from. According to this chart, there has always been a significant number of children
immigrants from Mexico, However, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador have significantly
spiked in the number of children illegally coming to the US.
(Park, 2014)
Since this recent influx of children crossing the border, much more attention has been
raised towards the issue. Many Americans have expressed a negative attitude towards the
subject stating that this is not the United State's problem and we should not be allocating funds to
assist these children. Some citizens have had a more positive outlook on this situation and have
been willing to help volunteer time and money to assist with the crisis. Hopefully, this will lead
to social change in the country in the future as the subject gains more publicity.
Mexico's economy is expected to grow 3.7% in 2015, which is in line with predictions
(Montes, 2014). The country is still in recovery from economic downfall in 2009 as well as the
collapse in 1994. As the economy grows, growth is expected in other areas as well. Businesses
will start to restructure, school systems will become more stable, and the social structure will
become more solid. Mexico's stock market is gaining strength with this recovery period and the
middle class is growing. Travel and tourism are also shaping growth in Mexico. Cruise ports in
once rarely visited places such as the Yucatán Peninsula are starting to be utilized more and more
and the local economy is surely benefiting.
Mexico has proven to be resilient and easily adapts to change. The country has certainly
had a difficult past due to many factors including its unstable economy, but the outlook for the
country is bright. If Mexico is able to sustain the infrastructure that it has now and is able to
continue producing exports as well as it has in the past, there is no reason why this country
cannot flourish as well as the United States.
