ACQUIRED IMMUNODEFICIENCY
            SYNDROME
 FIRST CASE IN AMERICA JUNE 1981

 From 1981 to 2001 -- 1.4 MILLION
persons in united states were infected
    with HIV
 816,149 cases were AIDS and 467,910
    died during this period
ACQUIRED IMMUNODEFICIENCY
        SYNDROME

Since 1998, 40,000 new cases of AIDS
diagnosed each year

There were 65,000 new cases of AIDS
diagnosed in 2007
ACQUIRED IMMUNODEFICIENCY
            SYNDROME

 Many HIV-infected persons do not get
tested until late in their infection

 20% of those who get tested, do not
    return to get the results
ACQUIRED
         IMMUNODEFICIENCY
            SYNDROME
 25% of persons living with HIV infection are
UNAWARE because they have not been tested
ACQUIRED IMMUNODEFICIENCY
        SYNDROME
OraQuick HIV rapid test was
approved by the Food and Drug
Administration in November 2002.

Simple test provides HIV results in
20 minutes

• Don’t be fooled in believing that HIV infection
  is “no big deal”

• There are medicines that decrease adverse
symptoms, but there in NO medicine that cures
  the disease
ACQUIRED IMMUNODEFICIENCY
SYNDROME
 Who gets HIV infections?
 There are many myths repeated by
    uninformed people.
     Some say “Gays” get it
     Some say “prostitutes” get it
Some say “sinful people” get it

How to prevent becoming
 infected with HIV virus
HIV KNOWS NO AGE

 Women in America outlive men and so
more older women are in the dating
  game.
 Women over 50 are becoming infected
by HIV and developing AIDS when they
  re-enter the dating game.
 Dating after 50 is DIFFERENT from
  dating thirty years ago.
Don’t Get Infected with HIV

 Unprotected sex with ANYONE is risking
  getting a sexually transmitted disease
 Only barrier protection… Condoms..
  Provide protection from HIV infection
 There is NO PREVENTIVE medication
  available for HIV infection
Knowing If You Are Infected

 Get tested for HIV: All doctor’s offices
can have you tested; Regional Health
  Departments can test you and
  Emergency Rooms can test you.

 Always ASK potential partner if he or she
is POSITIVE for HIV or have had an HIV
test within the last 6 months
If The HIV TEST IS POSITIVE

1. A health department person should
contact you to discuss how you may
   have gotten the infection.
2. You should be assigned a university
   hospital-associated doctor who treats
   HIV infections
3. You should start anti-viral medication
   immediately
Living With HIV Infection

 Today’s medication can control
symptoms, but DO NOT PREVENT the
  spread of HIV.
 Giving HIV to another person is putting
that person’s life at risk of DEATH
 There is NO MEDICAL cure for AIDS
HIV TREATMENT

 HIV medications are expensive
 Only University Hospitals have funding
to provide assistance with the cost of
  anti-viral medications
 Without HIV retroviral medications, most
  people develop lung complications,
sores on the body, weight loss and death
within a few years of infection
HOW HIV IS TRANSMITTED
1. Sexual Intercourse without condom
      or barrier protection
2. Natural Childbirth
3.Exposure to body fluids: blood,
  surgical fluids from the body,
  drainage from infected body sores,
  semen/sperm, vaginal discharge
  fluids
Sex and Good Communication

 Know your partner well enough to discuss
sex history and his/her chance of being HIV
    positive
 Make a date to get tested for HIV at the
same time before “going all the way”
 If you both are negative, use barrier methods
(condoms) anyway… you may not be his/her
    only partner.
What is NOT HIV Transmission

 KISSING does Not transmit HIV
 EATING from the same plate, spoon or
   fork does NOT transmit HIV.
 SLEEPING near an infected person
   does NOT transmit HIV
 SITTING near an infected person does
   NOT transmit HIV
What is NOT HIV Transmission

 PRAYING with a person does NOT
   transmit HIV
 HELPING BATHE a person does NOT
   transmit HIV
 HUGGING a person does NOT transmit
   HIV
ACQUIRED IMMUNODEFICIENCY
         SYNDROME
 Knowing your HIV status is a necessary
    part of good health practices
