Martin Cooper invented the first cell phone in 1973 while working as the Director of Research and Development at Motorola. The first cell phone, called the DynaTec phone, weighed around 5 pounds, had a battery life of only 20 minutes, and cost $4,000. Cooper wanted to develop a portable phone not confined to a car so people could communicate freely anywhere.
