1. HISTORICAL
Philippines was once a part of Asian continent during the pre-historic times.
25,000 years ago, the level of the seas rose up flooded the lower regions of
the earth.
The Filipinos are virtually a race of races. They are the product of the
mixture of various races in the world.
Three and half centuries of foreign rule-first by Spain and then by United
States.
Spain gave the Philippines it its main religion, Roman Catholicism.
American influences shows in the country’s bustling, skyscraper cities.
2. FIRST FILIPINOS
MALAYAN ORIGIN
o The first inhabitants of the Philippines.
o Primitive people with no knowledge in agriculture.
o Live by hunting and fruit gathering.
o Joined by a more advanced race from Indonesia.
o Build up the tribal system known as Barangays.
ISLAM
o 13th century A.D. the Filipinos were converted to Islam.
o Islamic influences continued unchallenged for 300 years,
until the arrival of the first Europeans-Spanish explorers-in
the 16th
century.
3. FOREIGN RULE
o 1521 European explorer Ferdinand Magellan landed in the Philippines, during his
attempt to sail the world
o 1564 Miguel Lopez de Legaspi, brought the Christianity.
o Spanish rule lasted until the end of 196h century , when it was challenge by growing
nationalist movement.
o An unsuccessful revolt against Spain broke out in 1896, Rizal was executed but the
rebellion continued by the leadership of Emilio Aguinaldo.
o 1898- rebel guerillas fought Spanish regulars.
o The Filipinos had believe that united states would give them independence, but they
now saw the prospect of self government.
o 1935 the united States gave the islands internal self government.
4. JAPANESE INVASION
o December 1941 japan launch a surprise attack on the Philippines.
o With in a month Japanese troops occupied manila, where they
setup puppet government.
o 1942, After the battle in Bataan and Corrigidor Filipino and
American troops were forced to surrender.
o October 1944 American forces under General Mc Arthur return
into the country completing the liberation in July 1945.
5. RELIGIOUS
Average Filipino is deeply religious and dedicated to his church and faith.
Cathedral, mosque or Chapelis the land mark of most communities.
Philippines is the only Catholic country in the east mediterainean sea
Spanish missionaries begun teaching us in the early 17th
century.
The Catholic educational association includes:
• Santo Tomas in Manila
• San Carlos in Cebu
• 100 seminaries and colleges
• 400 high schools
• 200 Elementary schools
• The church runs 13 hospitals, 9 asylums and shelters, 3 lepers colonies and
many dispensaries.
7. RELIGIOUS DISTRIBUTION
Most Filipinos are Christians (93% in 1960).
More than 80% are Roman Catholic
5% are Aglipayans.
About 3% belongs to various Protestant Churches
Muslims are about 5%
About 1% belongs to Inglesia ni Cristo.
8. The Philippine Independent church known as Aglipayan Church was formed in
1902 under the leadership of Gregorio Aglipay, roman Catholic priest and Isabela
de los Reyes, a journalist and politician.
American Protestantism entered the Philippines after Spanish ceded the
Islandsto the Us in 1898
The Pre- hysterians, Baptists, Methodist, Evangelical United brethren, Disciples
of Christ, Episcopaliens and congregationist where all represented by 1902.
Islam was introduce to the Philippines shortly before the Spaniards arrive.
