MAKEUP AND HAIRSTYLES
FROM DIFFERENT ERAS

1910’s MAKE-UP GALLERY
1910s look
Rosy Rouge
Popular rouge (blush) colours in the 1920s were rose,
pink, and orange hues.
The rouge was applied to the apples of the cheeks, but
not blended as it is today.
Powder Perfect
Women striving for flawless-looking skin on the 1920s
used face powder.
Early in the decade, pale shades like cream and ivory
were popular.
Later. however, with Coco Chanel's advocation of the
outdoors, powder that matched more closely to women's
own skin tones became more desirable.
Inspiring 1920s Makeup Pictures
Bold, dramatic, and sassy, 1920s makeup pictures
illustrate the types of cosmetic styles that were popular in
flapper era.
The use of cosmetics during the 1920s was a milestone;
as makeup became more widespread and accepted, more
and more women were enhancing their looks with cakes
of mascara, kohl, rouge, and red lipstick.
Dark eyes were a trademark of the decade; women lined
the eyes with black kohl completely around the eye.
1930s Glam
Although much of the world was suffering from the
Depression, women still desired to look like the popular
1930s starlets of the day, such as Jean Harlow and Greta
Garbo.
This meant more of the skinny eyebrow and red lips. A
popular daytime look found women applying petroleum
jelly to their eyelids and eyebrows.
Dark Siren of the 1940s
The 1940s ushered in pin-up girls and the femme fatale.
Hair trends called for longer, wavy styles.
Thicker eyebrows, red lips and natural tones on the eyes
were the order of the day.
The Fresh Faced 50s
The 1950s is generally regarded as a wholesome,
prosperous era.
Women's makeup was usually simple, but pancake
foundation was still popular. Bright red matte lips were the
focus of the face, as eye and cheek makeup was more
natural.
Mad for Mod
The 1960s face ran the gamut from the heavily made-up
mod look to the more natural late 60s hippie look.
Mod makeup called for lots of bright eye shadow (often
white or silver), heavy dark eyeliner and false lashes, with
pale colors on the lips.
Natural Face
As the 1960s wore on, a more natural look became
popular, mostly among hippies and flower children.
If any makeup was worn at all, it was usually just mascara
and a clear gloss or pale lipcolor
1910s
1920s
Once the hairstyle transition had been made into the first
decade of the century, longer hair was revered as the
finest. Accessories became increasingly popular ranging
from hats and bows to headbands and jewelled pins.
However, during this decade the short bob haircut became
increasingly admired – shifting the focus to hair
accessories.
1930s
The 1930s marked a huge shift in how women styled their
hair. The hairstyles of this decade were affected by the
events that were going on in the world. The great
depression was in full swing and women couldn’t afford to
have a stylist, so they became more creative. Finger
waves became very popular because you were able to do
this hairstyle with your fingers and styling lotion, and
without the use of a curling iron. There was also an
intense desire to be blonde during this decade due to the
hot Hollywood starlet Jean Harlow.
1940s
The 1940s hairstyles were all about glamour. Many of the
most fashionable looks at this time took hours to achieve
because in order to attain the preferred hairstyle of class
and sophistication you had to roll your hair. The hair
rollers produced soft curls, which was worth the time it
took because it appeared elegant and feminine. Two of
the most popular hairstyles at the time were the Chignon
and the Omelette Fold.
1950s
The 1950s hairstyle was all about showing our neck or
long, soft curls no one wanted straight hair. Jackie
Kennedy and Lucille Ball were two celebrities who
inspired many women in the 50s. The bouffant was one of
the most popular hairstyles during this time. Some of the
basic styles of the 1950s were a pulled back bun with a
scarf or a slicked back pony-tail. However, by the end of
the 1950s big backcombed bee-hives, bouffant, and the
French pleat became the trendy style.
1960s
The transition from the 1950s into the 1960s went from
the ever-inspiring ‘big hair’ hairstyles to the stick-straight
hair of the hippie age. At the beginning of this decade, the
popular style was still drawing from the beehive-inspired
hair. However, the style that became popular towards the
middle/end of the decade was a more relaxed, natural
look.
