Pop Culture in the 60’s Brought to you by : Daisy, Ravin ,Shannon, and Devin
Music In the 60s there were many popular bands and artists some of those were: The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, Orbison, Buddy Holly, The Drifters, Jim Reeves, The Mamas Roy and The Papas, The Monkees, Simon and Garfunkel, The Supremes, Aretha Franklin and Cream . Most of these bands/artists are pop some are pop rock some just rock and Bob Dylan a folk artist. The music then is different to today's because it was more rock and pop and nowadays it is rap and hip hop and country etc. This generation of music was following the king of pop Elvis Presley from the 50s and the band that still sells and is popular among some people is the Beatles.
Food Food in the 60s was a lot simpler in some ways but just as yummy for example they are sometimes quite similar because in the 60s lets say you were throwing a childrens party a good one you would cook, make and have: Carrot sticks, grilled frankfurters on toasted rolls, raggedy ann salad, chocolate cake, frozen fruit chunks and watermelon punch. A fast food place that is still here today that started in the 60s was wendys and has maintained there restaurants throughout the world. Some popular things were : Pop-tarts, buffalo wings, ruffles potato crisps which are coming back and are being advertised on the tv, lucky charms and more.
Toys /Games There were many popular games in the 60s some were: Twister, clue, championship pool table, rockem sockem robots, barbie foldaway case, sketch-o-matic, the game of lifeand this may not be considered game but the beatles magazine was hugely popular especially among the girls. Some of these are similar to the games we have now like twister the twister now is exactly the same but it just looks a little different.Toys and games are different now than in the past because it is more advanced in technology things because things don’t just have to be on paper and cardboard people have more range with what we know from research.
Fashion In the 60s big hairstyles were really popular among the girls and mini skirts and dresses were also popular. The foundeer of mini skirts was Mary Quant they would have them 6 or 7 inches above the knee. Short high heels and flat boots were really popular the flat boots came in, in 1965. Guys fashion was suits the popular colour was brown with brown mochason shoes the popular hairstyle was slicked back with gel.
Transport Transport in those days may not seem as flash now but were hugely popular then, some were: VW vans, Austin/Morris mini, Bentleys and Classical Fords. There weren’t many cars back then and having a car was considered a luxury many people walked or biked to the places they had to go to or for school everyone went on school buses.
Technology Technology in those days was not as extreme and having something that is techno based was considered extremely cool. Some of the technology in that period of time was: Pocket transistor radios every teenager had to have one of these otherwise they weren’t cool they were just like mobile phones today- cheap, colourful and highly desirable, another piece of desired techno was the phillips E3300 cassete tape recorder this was the worlds first portable voice recording piece of tecnology it was a high quality expensive product even the humble battery shaver was considered cool and even looked top class this came in, in 1967 which was just the thing to pack in the hand luggage.
Social influences John F Kennedy became the 35th president of the U.S from january 20th, 1961 untill his assasination on November 22nd, 1963. The vietnam war was going on and even though it was not a major world catastrophe it still killed many people.
History In the 60s the maple leaf was officially made canadians symbol and flag, Martin Luther King Jr made a speech, "I have a Dream" on August 28, 1963. More than 200,000 people came to Washington DC to demand equal rights for Black and Whites. Martin Luther King jr died was assasinated in 1968 April the 4th he was standing on his balcony and was shot.
Economy Things would seem cheaper to us now because we earn more money but in the 60s things would seem more expensive because they earn less money for example to buy a new house in the early 60s it would cost $12,700 and by 1969 it was $15,500. So the price went up quite a bit. Another example would be a gallon of gas in 1960 it was 25c and by 1969 it was 45c. But it was cheaper in the olden days because as I said people earnt less.
