CAFOD is the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development and the official overseas development agency of the Catholic Church in England and Wales. It was established in 1961 after Catholic women organized the first Fast Day to help mothers and babies in the Caribbean. CAFOD has 290 staff in the UK and 70 overseas and supports over 500 projects in more than 50 countries, spending over £50 million in 2006 to help people worldwide. CAFOD provides both short-term relief in response to emergencies as well as long-term development programs to help communities become self-sustaining.
