• The FIFA World Cup in 2010 gave the world a glimpse of
modern South Africa. However, it was also criticized for
failing to portray what living in South Africa means for
large parts of the population. The country is diverse in all
possible aspects, from language to religion, owing to the
many, many ethnicities unified in this nation.
• The reality, however, still shows the old divides in terms of
education and income, for example. Blacks are, statistically
speaking, still the most underprivileged group within
South African society. Nonetheless, change does come
step by step, and South Africa has already successfully
begun to lose the aftertaste of decades of governmental
inequality and segregation through a series of
countermeasures.
• Today, some of the most important economic sectors include
industry, particularly the automotive and the emerging IT and
communications sectors. About a quarter of the population is out
of a job, and the majority of unemployed people live on less than
1.25 USD a day, the threshold for extreme poverty.
• South Africa has the continent's biggest economy, though this
went into recession in May 2009 following a sharp slowdown in the
mining and manufacturing sectors. The construction industry, on
the other hand, benefited from a huge program of government
investment ahead of the 2010 World Cup. South Africa is, along
with China, Brazil, Russia and India, a member of the BRICS club of
emerging world economic powerhouses.
• South Africa has the second-highest number of HIV/Aids patients in
the world. Around one in seven of its citizens is infected with HIV.
Free anti-retroviral drugs are available under a state-funded
scheme.

Editor's Notes

  1. Johannensburg, South Africa Most important city of the country
  2. It is divided into nine provinces and has 2,798 kilometres of coastal line.   of Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe; to the east are Mozambique and Swaziland; while Lesotho is an enclave surrounded by South African territory The population of South Africa is 43,792,000 (2001). The population of South Africa is 43,792,000 (2001).
  3. South africa is the country whith more official languages in the world South Africa is the country with the most official languages. English being the 1 nationally understood, with the ten others being less widely spoken.  Also, in South Africa, people speak what is known as Funnigalore. This is a slang form of incorporating words from any language into a sentance, and most people can usually understand this.   Dutch and English were the first official languages of South Africa from 1910 to 1925. Dutch was replaced by Afrikaans when South Africa became a republic in 1961, and Dutch was dropped in 1983, so between 1983 and 1994, South Africa had two official languages: English and Afrikaans.
  4.   Además predominaba el cristianismo con 55% de la población protestante, 10% católica y el resto musulmanes, judios, islamitas, hindúes, entre otras. South Africa has a policy of freedom in religion, so there isn't a official religion in the country. But in the census in 2001 showed that the most practiced religion in the country is the Christianity, but has been losing population each year since the census. Now a days multiple different religions have been growing in the vast land of South Africa, and some of them don't believe in anything.
  5. South African music is characterized by a fusion of local ideas with influences from other countries. Right from the days of colonization, the indigenous people of the country were influenced by the westerners and adopted their musical instruments and ideas
  6. Ramkie- The South African ramkie is a homemade guitar constructed from an empty oil can and pieces of thin bicycle wire attached to a wooden guitar neck. Mamokhorong- The mamokhorong is a single-string violin developed in South Africa. It is played regularly in the dances of the culturally rich Cape Town area. The chipendani is a mouth bow from South Africa and Zimbabwe. It is shaped like a hunting bow and consists of one thin string that runs from one tip of the bow to the other.
  7. The art community makes up a very small percentage of the total population due to their limited education; the South African artists got recognition in the international art world.
  8. Today South Africa is a storehouse of the oldest and finest rock paintings in the world. During the apartheid era, there was a huge diversity in South African art. From landscape painting to abstract art and from personal issues to political issues, the artists portrayed a whole range of idea.
  9. polygamy
  10. When Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress came into power at the end of the Apartheid in South Africa in 1994, they decided to change all of the national holidays to new national holidays that would be meaningful to all South Africans.
  11. Hay platos autóctonos con carnes de la rica fauna africana, como la de avestruz, búfalo, kudu, impala y cocodrilo.
