While America was being discovered, Castilla was under the rule of the Catholic Monarchs, Isabel of Castilla and Fernando of Aragón. Their marriage united the two largest kingdoms in the Iberian Peninsula and established a Spanish monarchy. The monarchs sought to consolidate control over the Mediterranean and open new Atlantic trade routes. They funded Christopher Columbus' voyage aiming to reach Asia by sailing west, which instead led to the discovery of the Americas.
