Introduction
What is a Design Pattern?
A design pattern solves a problem within a given context. The solution that is offered
by implementing a pattern results in a system design structure, which balances the
concerns of the design problem in a manner most appropriate for the given context. In
Understanding and Using Patterns in Software Development , Dirk Riehle and Heinz
Zullighaven offer a rather nice definition of what a design pattern is:
A pattern is the abstraction from a concrete form which keeps recurring in specific
non arbitrary contexts.

The patterns described in the GoF book are illustrated in C++; a programming
language that has been declining in use over the last number of years, which limits
the learning of patterns in today s development environment where the dominant
programming language taught and used, as far as patterns are concerned is Java,
although patterns can be implemented in any object orientated programming language.
The patterns exhibited are described in very concise and restricted examples that lack
a comprehensive context in order for the reader to gain a full understanding of the use
of the pattern in question. The patterns throughout the book are also presented in
isolation to each other which hinders the illustration of pattern interaction and thus
the full benefit to those wishing to learn how to implement design patterns.
Allen Holub produced a book Holub on Patterns Learning Design Patterns by
Looking at Code , which detailed the use of design patterns while developing a
game called Game of Life. The Game of Life is a cellular automation program,
which begins with cells that are classed as either alive or dead . The idea is then
that each cell follows a set of rules to determine which whether it can live or whether
it must die .
Holubs book, published in 2004 addressed some of the shortcomings of the GoF
publication, such as the patterns were now demonstrated in Java, which has become
the favoured language of the software development industry,

52. An Analysis Of La Persistencia De La Memoria
Another surrealist work of art by Salvador Dali is La Persistencia de la Memoria (fig.
2). It was painted in 1931, and is an oil on canvas. The painting can be found at The
Museum of Modern Art in New York City, NY, with dimensions of 33 x 24.1 cm. La
Persistencia de la Memoria (fig. 2) is Salvador Dali s most famous painting. The oil
painting is set in a desert area with a lake or pond casting off into the background.
The rocks in the background are very sharp but the rest of the background is
smooth. The sky is a gentle blue with yellow tones that blend together. On the left
side of the painting, is a rectangular board or platform with a reflective surface. The

The clocks all look thin and noodle like with the box being rough and wooden.
Finally, the white figure has a smooth exterior with the lashes looking like actual
hair. Salvador Dali s painting, La Persistencia de la Memoria (fig. 2), represents the
scientific Freudian influence. Everything appears to be in a dream like state
because nothing makes logical sense (Eggener 36). Each clock represents a
different time in life, whether it is his past, is current state, or his future. The
jagged cracks in the mountains symbolize the rough patches or cracks that one
must go through in life and the reflections in the water and platform show how
those mistakes reflect who we are. The dead tree shows that eventually we all will
grow old and die. Lastly, the white figure is Salvador Dali and how his life is slowly
ticking away as well and the eyes are shut because he is reflecting on it in a dream.
The final artwork of Salvador Dali s that exemplifies Surrealism is Portrait de Paul
Eluard (fig. 3). This artwork was painted in 1929 is also an oil on canvas. It can be
found in the Dali Theatre and Museum, Figueres, Spain. The dimensions of Portrait
de Paul Eluard (fig. 3) are 33 x 25 cm. The painting is of a man named Paul Eluard
who was a French poet and one of the founders of Surrealism. Eluard was also Dali
s futures wife s boyfriend at the time. Portrait de Paul Eluard (fig. 3) is full of

Tootsie Roll Industries (TR), a popular world wide confectionary company, has
been successful since inception in 1986 with the introduction of the Tootsie Roll
and has profited from low prices, quality and convenience. TR is in a solid position
for growth with a strong balance sheet, great brand equity, and control over in house
operations. The company is controlled by the CEO and COO, Melvin and Ellen
Gordon.
Tootsie Roll is a publically owned franchise that is traded as New York Stock
Exchange (NYSE) Stock Symbol TR. Tootsie Roll maintained a two percent share of
the $8 billion total candy market, which was dominated by such corporate giants as
NestlГ© and Hershey, it has been a longtime leader in the non chocolate and lollipop

55. Synagogue Visit
The Synagogue or Beit Knesset, the Jewish house of worship, is a very intriguing and
complex institution, and when conducting a tour, it requires a great amount of
knowledge for the tourist who have never visited a Synagogue, to have an adequate
understanding of the institution. Being enrolled in Religious Studies 217, I have
gained a lot of knowledge that allow me to believe that I would be a very informative
and enlightening tour guide. When conducting a tour of a Synagogue, I would inform
my tourist of the religious rituals that take place in the temple and important religious
figures, objects, clothing and ceremonies, so that they could have an adequate

The first two ceremonies I would explain are the Bar Mitzvah and the Bat Mitzvah,
which are quite similar to each other. At the age of 13, Jewish boys become a Bar
Mitzvah and at the age of 12, Jewish girls become a Bat Mitzvah. The ceremony,
which usually takes place during the Shabbat morning service, may feature the bar
/bat mitzvah child leading prayers, or reading the Torah/Haftarah. If my guest were
to attend one of these ceremonies, I explain that they should dress formal, wear a
tallit and kippah, and should be respectful of the ceremony and the individuals. The
next ceremony I explain to my tourist is the male circumcision ceremony, called
the Brit Milah. On the eighth day from when the child is born, the ceremony takes
place following the morning prayer. The mother of the child hands over her child

chair of Elijah, a chair designated for circumcisions and the mohel, the ritual
circumciser, performs the ritual with the child s father beside him. Following the
circumcision is a prayer and a festive meal, consisting of meat, fish, dairy and wine.

56. Dodge City Zoo
There are cages all around, sad animals lay inside them. The animals laying around a
concrete enclosure waiting for the day to pass. The grass is dead, the enclosures are
small, there is cemente all around. There is no nature only the living, breathing
animals being put up for the entertainment of others. Many people call this a zoo. The
Wright Park Zoo is one of the smallest zoos in Kansas based in Dodge City.There is
not true benefit of having a zoo in a small town because not many people go. The
younger members of the community are the only ones that are interested in visiting.
The reason Dodge City has a zoo is to educate the visitors. The Wright Park Zoo is

Jaide s mother, Sandra says referring to the monkeys enclosures, I think it would be
better to have the animals in a greener environment. The monkeys enclosure is a
small square cage this metal bars shaped in squares around the whole cage. To the
left of the enclosure is a hogs enclosure. On the right side of the monkeys enclosure
is an empty space. Inside the enclosure there is a fake tree that branches around the
enclosure. Jaide agrees with her mother and says There is a lot of trees in the forest
and there isn t even a real one in there. Dodge City should invest in the animals
happiness not just their health. The visitors get nothing from coming to the zoo
besides seeing a sad lonely animal in a cage.
Dodge City is not interested in investing money into what will not profit. Dodge
City has always had larger priorities that will bring in revenue into the city. The
Wright Park Zoo a free zoo, therefore there is no revenue coming in. Emily Martin
says The Parks Department has a developing plan for the zoo. I do not know when
this will take place because the water park is their first priority. Dodge City will
always be more interested in what will bring in more money into the town. It is up to
the community to take action

Part 1: Plot Summary In the short story The Sniper the setting is based on in Ireland
during the Irish War. No character names are introduced, but a description of each
character is stated. The main character is a republican sniper, that is risky. The story
opens on him sitting on top of a building eating, drinking, and smoking while on duty.
While smoking, an enemy sniper took a shot at him and he got undercover. His task
is to eliminate two targets getting out of a vehicle. While undercover he waits for
both of them to get out of the vehicle and takes both of his shots, nailing both. After
the took the two shots, the enemy sniper took a shot at him, hitting

The use of counters and timers in PLCs has helped increase the efficiency of
manufacturing and been of great importance. Timers and counters have been used
outside plcs for a long time have shown themselves to be of great help. There use
inside plcs has helped reduce space and the many of the complications of hardwiring.
First, let s start out with the Ton timer. Ton timers were first used in plcs in the slc
500s. For all timers, there are three bits. The enabled bit, timer timing bit, and the
done bit. On a Ton timer, the enable bit activated when there is a path of true
conditions energizing the timer. The timer timing bit is activated when the timer is

What has changed greatly is when the timer timing and down bits energize and de
energize. The timer timing bit for an TOF timer energizes when the timer loses a
path of true conditions. This can be useful for if this timer is put in parallel with a
load and you want a device to run for a set amount of time after the load has de
energized. With there use the allow for the simplifying of a program and more ease
of understanding. Furthermore, the done bit energizes as soon as the timer
energizes. When the timers accumulative value reaches its preset the done bit de
energizes opposite of the TON and the RTO. Next, there are counters and their
functions. There are two types of counters the count up and the count down. Like
timers, they have a done bit. It works exactly the same as it did when used in timers.
Unlike timers though counters also have count up and count down bits. When the
counter is energized, depending on which counter is being activated, the counter will
add or deduct one number from the accumulative value. It will only add one number
for each false to true transition. Count up timers can be used to reach a specific
amount of material or objects. Using a count down and a count up timer together in a
