Army Varsity Team
Problem Identification: The problem identified in the HBR Case Study the Army Crew Team was
Coach P s assumption that choosing the most physically fit rowers would yield a high performing
team. Coach P. failed to understand how team dynamics, morale, and overall emotional intelligence
of the team can inhibit teamsuccess.
Alternative Analysis: Coach P. was baffled why the Varsity team performed poorly as opposed to
the non Varsity team. While he put much thought with selecting the most physically fit team mates,
he failed to understand the importance of recognizing and working through issues in relation to
emotional intelligence. The Varsity group kept pointing the finger on others, failing to recognize
and take accountability for their overall subpar performance. Rather than work through the negative
team dynamics, they often emailed their complaints to the coach. An emotionally intelligent group
would have worked through their issues together as a group. If someone is acting out of line, the
team members must feel comfortable calling the foul. The team needed to build positive norms
such as responding constructively in emotionally uncomfortable situations (Amabille, 2013). The
team did not share ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Coach P. should better understand the importance of establishing positive emotional intelligence
with the team, and lay out clear groundworks to establish this. As mentioned earlier, an
emotionally intelligent team will hold eachother accountable with working through negative areas.
If someone falls out of line, the team would need to agree to call eachother out on behaviors that
add no group value. Coach P. would need to lead by example, and call members out if they are not
in line with the agreed upon expectations. The group would need to commit to lead eachother

The Golden Age Of Piracy Essay
The Golden Age of Piracy existed within the Atlantic World in the seventeenth and eighteenth
centuries. It was during this time that the enterprise of piracy expanded and then abruptly ended.
During this time, privateering was also an active enterprise ebbing and flowing with international
conflicts. The line between the two was often blurred and created a political conundrum that
people on both sides found it difficult to navigate. The life of a pirate was appealing to many on
land and sea. The common conception of piracyportrays the enterprise as a disorganized anarchy.
This is not true, piracy was a complex entity within the Atlantic world. The enterprise of piracy and
privateering was complex as it navigated the seas, the Atlantic... Show more content on

These interactions show that piracy was more than criminal activity, it was a business. John
Appleby extensively covers the relationships between pirates and women. Some were married,
like Edward Teach (Blackbeard), who was married multiple times. A few became pirates to escape
marriage, like Stede Bonnet. Women had many roles in relation to piracy. They were receivers and
maintainers who conducted business with pirates: they bought plunder, provided lodging and safe
houses, and provided entertainment and food. (APPLEBY 5). The role of women grew along with
the growth of river piracy where they took part in brokering and distributing stolen plunder. These
discrete networks helped piracy succeed (APPLEBY 5). At pirate bases, such as Port Royal, women
were a source of entertainment and pleasure. Women were not immune from the violence and abuse
that accompanied pirates wherever they went. Evidence suggests female abuse by pirates peaked
during the Golden Age in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries when long distance plunder
emerged, weakening the links ashore. Piracy remained a largely male experience, with just a few
notable female pirates, such as Anne

SUMMARY
While discussing the topics of trade, development and political economy, globalization is often
discussed. In general, globalization means a process in which world economies become highly
integrated, leading to a global economy and highly global economic policymaking, through
international agencies such as the World Trade Organization (Todaro Smith, 2006).

Ibbott (2007) explained what really globalization means as A global company is one that permits
its local operations to act in the image of the market locally and yet can act in a truly
homogeneous way with respect to the supply and provision of its core products and services
Vodafone is a global company as its sourcing and supply chain activities are transferred to be
entirely global for the major part of its investment, while services remain local (Ibbott, 2007).
Globalization does not mean to open operations and branches in other countries but to make its
operations global, not directed by the head office located in the parent country.
CONSEQUENCES OF GLOBALIZATION ON TELECOMMUNICATION INDUSTRY CASE

Globalization has become a vital aspect of the global economy and strongly influences the
comparative advantage of economies. (Salvatore, 2004) examined the effect of globalization on the
comparative advantage of Europe for several goods and concluded that Europe has a comparative
disadvantage in telecommunication with respect to Japan, United States and Dynamic Asian
countries. The degree of globalization is a significant element in examining the international

SMEs in Singapore
1.Introduction Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) form the majority of the enterprises in
Singapore s economy. They employ over 70% of Singapore s workforce and generate about 50%
of the country s total GDP. Most SMEs in Singapore grow from small enterprises into large
competitive companies. Manufacturing and wholesale SME sectors have increased impressively
with the number of employees in these sectors increasing by up to 8%. SMEs in the Finance,
Property and holdings sector hold the top three sectors in terms of the amount of profits accrued.
Competitive strategies in Singapore s SMEs are based on the 3MK key success factors;
Management, Markets, Money and Knowhow (Bull Winter, 1991). In this paper, the contribution
of SMEs to Singapore, the economic constraints that face them, and the steps that can be taken to
strengthen SMEs to ensure its sustained contribution to Singapore s economy will be discussed.
2.Contribution of SMEs in Singapore SMEs in Singapore generate a large share of new jobs.
The government handed out $98 million to be used in upgrading projects for small and medium

Setting The Scene From Block Grant Based Funding
Setting the scene
Claire McCartney, research adviser at the CIPD and author of the report, comments: There seems
to be a real lack of awareness amongst senior managers, who rate the trust levels much stronger
than more junior employees. It seems they either have a tendency to view things through rose
tinted glasses, or are out of touch with how employees nearer the coalface are feeling. If senior
leaders are in denial or burying their heads in the sand, there is a danger that a them and us
mentality will emerge and change will be very difficult to achieve.
, and a transition from block grant based funding to student loan based funding of teaching has
taken place.
The past five years have been a time of significant fast paced change for Higher Education
Institutions (HEIs), with the higher education market being opened to new providers, the removal
of the Student Number Control cap and changes in student funding HEIs have needed to remain
agile and adaptable. (HEFCE, 2015)
With International students making a huge contribution to universities and the UK including
boosting the UK economy, HEIs are now required to compete in ever more challenging global
markets (HEFCE BIS grant letter 2015). HEIs recent successes have been and will continue to be
vital to the UKs future economic prospects as the country enters a period of growth. (HEFCE s

Rhetorical Analysis Of Lou Gehrig s Farewell To Baseball
June 19th, 1939 one of the New York Yankees and baseball s most famous first baseman, Lou
Gehrig, was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis after six days of extensive testing.
Fifteen days later on July 4th, 1939 Lou Gehrig flew to Yankee stadium in New York and gave
his famous, Farewell to Baseball speech. The speech wasn t just for Yankees fans, but for all
fans of baseball. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS for short, is a a nervous system disease
that weakens muscles and impacts physical function, usually killing the person in two to five
years. Gehrig knew he didn t have long. That s why fifteen days after his diagnosis Gehrig was
standing at home plate in Yankee stadium telling all baseball fans of his retirement due to
illness. In under 300 words, using ethos, logos, and pathos, Gehrig transformed how baseball
fans viewed him, not just as a player, but as a person. Gehrig showed the world how strong
willed and fearless a person can be in the face of adversity. The credibility, or ethos, of Gehrig s
speech was already there before he ever started the speech. At the time of the speech Gehrig held
one MLB record, Gehrig had played in 2,130 consecutive baseball games, quite possibly the
most honorable MLB record. He was very well known and well respected by all fans and
players. In his speech Gehrig says, Who wouldn t consider it an honor to have known Jacob
Ruppert? Also, the builder of baseball s greatest empire, Ed Barrow? To have spent six years
with that wonderful little fellow, Miller Huggins? Then to have spent the next nine years with
that outstanding leader, that smart student of psychology, the best manager in baseball today,
Joe McCarthy? (1). In saying it showed his personal side of his baseball career, the places he has
been, and the people he s had the wonderful opportunity to play baseball with. The respect the
fans and players had for Gehrig only made his speech more credible, Lou Gehrig was loved by all
baseball fans. The biggest part of Gehrig s speech is pathos, or the emotional part of his speech.
In the first lines of the speech Gehrig grabs the audience s attention with emotional appeal by
saying Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about a bad break I

The Last Star Character Analysis
Effort Determines the Outcome
Rick Yancey s science fiction novel, The Last Star, takes place in a modern day society where
the government has become corrupted and is now working against the human race. Most of the
people left after the 5 waves, barely even try to stay alive. They know the odds of surviving is a
lot to a little, so they think what is the point of staying alive a week longer. Although, a group of
6 people try their hardest and their best to stay alive. These 6 people are probably the only 6
people in their world that is trying to stay alive. And because they try their best, they end up
surviving much longer than other people. This suggests that a possible theme for Rick Yanceys The
Last Star is that however much ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That gave Cassie the time to set the trap into motion. Because she thought and took in her
surroundings, she was able to escape the silencer and return to Ringer. In the ache of time grinding
to a crawl, the power line falls from the prey s hand in a graceful, sweeping arc. The light sparks
off exposed wires as they descend languidly as snow. The line that gracefully falls slips through
the silencer s fingers. The light glints off the wires as the touch ground, silently, like falling
snow (Yancey 298). This shows how Cassie took in her surroundings and came up with a better
way to handle her situation. She knew how once a silencer, you are faster, stronger, and better in
every physical way. She knew she would be beaten if she tried to run, so she decided to eliminate
the silencer. This is important because it helps show another critical example of how the theme
fits this story. The theme fits this scene because Cassie tried her best to create a trap that would
work against the silencer, and because she put so much effort into it, she ended up succeeding and
returning to Ringer. This refers back to the theme, because Cassie did exactly what the theme is.
When a problem was handed to her, she tried her best to solve it, and in return her solution worked.
An example of author s craft that Rick Yancey uses in The Last Star is exploding the moment. One
scene where this takes place, is when

Juvenile Justice System Is Not The Punishment Of The...
Restore the Youth, Restore the Community
A Collaborative Action Plan to Reduce Recidivism in Englewood
LuGary Davis
Urban Community Development PPA 505
Professor James L. Miles Sr.
March 17, 2015
Overview
The chief problem in any community cursed with crime is not the punishment of the criminals, but
the preventing of the young from being trained to crime (Du Bois, 1903). Though W.E.B. Du Bois
wrote this quote well over a century ago, it still reflects the truth we hold today. This is especially
apparent when we examine the intent of the modern juvenile justice system.
The juvenile justice system operates under a system referred to as juvenile court. Although this
system was developed in Cook County, Illinois in the late ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

These reforms encompass everything from the use of solitary confinement to guidelines that
prevent a youth from even entering the institutional side of juvenile justice by using community
resources (E. Blaskey, personal communication, February 28, 2015). One of the most popular ideas
motivating this reform is the concept of restorative justice. Restorative justice looks at
accountability a bit differently from previous classic models. In the past, accountability was about
the punishment matching the crime which boils down to the classic biblical thought, an eye for an
eye. Restorative justice defines accountability as taking responsibility for your behavior and taking
action to repair the harm (BARJ, 1995). Instead of completing a punishment unrelated to the
victims, in restorative justice, an offender must come to terms with the outcome of their behavior to
the victims and other vital stakeholders in an effort to help heal all parties.
The neighborhood of Englewood in Chicago, Illinois definitely knows the effects of juvenile
crime on their community. Englewood is located on Chicago s south side and is bordered by
Garfield Boulevard to the north, 75th Street to the south, Racine Avenue to the west and State
Street to the east. According to the Social IMPACT Research Center (2014), Englewood has a
poverty rate percentage of 42.5%, second only to Riverdale. This means that nearly half of the
residents in Englewood live below the poverty

Hawkeye Character Analysis
Society as a whole tells us (or at least my generation) that we watch too much television, but I
have to admit, I live for M*A*S*H reruns. If it were a horse, I would ride off into the sunset on it
like some sappy love story. If you asked me about my ideal day, it would consist of having a
M*A*S*H palooza complete with hot chocolate and that super buttery popcorn that makes you
feel all greasy. What I like most about M*A*S*H is that it s not just a show. It discusses various
controversial topics that are still relevant today. For instance, in one episode, the characters
disobeyed their commanding officer in order to aid a soldier who was terrified of war. What they
highlighted was that kindness should outweigh orders. M*A*S*H also has very real characters,
so much so that they seem to come to life. I feel like the 4077th M*A*S*H unit is my family.

Gatorade Persuasion Analysis
Abstract
Gatorade sports drinks have consistently the most popular drink of its kind for decades now.
There are several competitors that make nearly identical products, however, Gatorade always finds
itself at the top of the chart in sales and produce steady sales growth each year. This paper looks at
the persuasive tactics Gatorade uses to market their products and why it is so effective. The paper
analyzes the demographics Gatorade targets, the company s strategies for persuading those
demographics and discusses the reasons why those strategies are so successful in persuading and
have kept Gatorade in a class above all its competitors.

Youths and teenagers began seeing these advertisements and were willing to do anything to
emulate Michael Jordan. The Elaboration Likelihood Model helps to realize how kids are
persuaded this way by means of peripheral processing. Kids are not cognitively making a
decision to be persuaded, but are subconsciously accepting the message that Gatorade will make
them a better athlete, like Michael Jordan. The persona of; If you drink Gatorade, you will be
like Michael Jordan on the basketball court began to be planted into the minds of teenagers.
(Rovell, 2006). A song was even used in the commercials called Be Like Mike and served as a
popular jingle to associate Jordan with the Gatorade brand. This served as another form of medium
for Gatorade to promote their products.
Feedback
Gatorades success with using athletic figures and role models to promote food and beverage
products has paved the way for many other companies. Other companies since Gatorade have
hired athletic spokesman to endorse products including the likes of PowerAde, Gatorades main
competitor. PowerAde was actually only developed by Coca Cola Co. for the sole purpose to

Homelessness And The Homeless
As the growth of Political values increases, followers of politics, see one major conflict rise,
Homelessness. In 2013 it was estimated that 1 out of every 30 children were homeless. As this
issue grows some people think the only way to fix homelessness, is by making it illegal. But
criminalizing homelessness will have many negative effects, it will hurt the chances of the
homeless getting jobs and getting off the streets, volunteer groups are creating projects to help
create housing for the homeless, and the homeless are already treated poorly, and looked down
upon by society. When applying for a job, the employer runs a background check to see what
type of person the candidate is, where he or she came from, and if they are qualified for the job.
If the employer sees a past of bad decisions, or a criminal records, it is an immediate red flag.
Some governments, are arresting homeless citizens that are setting up cardboard shanties ,
which are referred to as a shanty town or squatter area and are settlements of improvised
housing. They are usually made of plywood, corrugated metal, sheets of plastic, and cardboard
boxes. The police are giving employers a criminal record for the homeless candidate, or a reason
for the employer not to hire and help rebuild the homeless person s life. When an impoverished, or
homeless person applies for a job, they are already at the bottom of the pool of candidates.

Taking a Look at the Bitcoin
Problem Overview
Since the creation of Bitcoin in 2009, cryptocurrencies have gained an increasing amount of media
attention. Ever since Bitcoin first began trading, investors as well as miners have proclaimed the
positive and negative aspects of the virtual currency, though the fluctuation in price of Bitcoin has
been very difficult to determine. This research paper look analyzes some of the issues that must be
addressed to ensure the future of Bitcoin.
Introduction
The first form of cyptocurrency, Bitcoins are the first type of digital currency that is both created
and subsequently managed by cryptography, rather than a central authority (Kinsella 2013). The
Bitcoin architecture was outlined in a research paper by Satoshi Nakamoto, which led to the
creation of a decentralized network, allowing the peer to peer digital currency to be owned and
traded (Smith 2013). After several years of development, Bitcoin was launched in 2009, and exists
solely within the Block Chain (explained later).
Creation of Bitcoins
The architecture of Bitcoin utilizes a validation system, based on a sequence of recent transactions
and numerical proofs of work, which are passed through an SHA 256 hashing algorithm (twice)
(Smith 2013). The result of this is a block , which follows very precise mathematical criteria, and
requires an exact numerical to solve. These required numericals are extremely difficult to calculate.

The Effect Of Calcium On The Reaction Of Hydrogen Peroxide

The iodine can be detected by its colour forming a blue black solution. The detection of the iodine
can be enhanced by the addition of starch solution. The sodium thiosulphate will react with the

The rate of reaction is dependent on the slowest step which is called the rate determining step .
The nature of the slow step is not obvious from the balanced equation. The order of reactions
with respect to each reactant in the RDS is the same as the number of moles of that chemical in
the RDS A series of experiments were carried out in which the concentration of iodide ions is
varied while keeping the concentrations of all the other solutions the same. In each experiment,
the time taken for the colour change is recorded. The results obtained are used to determine the
rate of reaction. The rate of reaction can be represented as (1/time) and the concentration of the
iodide ions can be represented by the volume of potassium iodide solution used. Materials:

The Negative Effects Of Air Pollution In China
In recent years, air pollution has become a growing problem in China (Zhang, Chao). According
to the newly released scientific paper by Dan Levin, Outdoor air pollution contributes to the
deaths of an estimated 1.6 million people in China every year, or about 4,400 people a day
(Levin, Dan). Essentially, air is a major part of our overall health. However, people (including
ourselves), especially living in developed countries, suffer from the exposure of air pollution. This
potentially puts our health at risk. It causes various negative effects to our body that in worst cases
leads to death. Air pollutionaffects our health in multiple ways; as it varies from minimal to
serious problems. The air pollutants have negative effects on our cardiovascular system, causing
many fatalities as well as diseases to those specifically in China. People can protect themselves
from the suffrage of cardiovascular diseases by being cautious with what they are surrounded by.
With the rapid industrialization and urbanization in China, air pollution has become a major
issue. China is a popular country in the world known for its pollution and population. Air
pollution was defined as, contamination of air by smoke and harmful gases such as oxides of
carbon, sulfur and nitrogen (Mishra,Sundeep). As China becomes more industrialized with
buildings and factories, pollution increases and causes environmental, as well as health problems.
According to an article by Chao Zhang, he associates the cardiovascular mortality rate and air
pollution in Hefei, China; he analyzes, The characteristics of air pollution in different regions vary
depending on the level of industrialization and other factors (Zhang, Chao). Hefei, the capital city
of Anhui province, was also a part of the urbanization and industrial expansion, which also
increased serious air pollution (Zhang, Chao). The dramatic increasing of automobiles in the past
few years also damaged the air quality in China, being the reasoning for multiple cardiovascular
diseases and damages. The cardiovascular system is critical in our bodies. Without the
cardiovascular system, our body would not be supplied with the substances needed to stay alive

After the 100 days it then becomes the responsibility of the patient to either pay out of their
pocket or use a supplemental insurance. For many this is an issue as they do not have any other
insurance nor do they have the finances to afford this care on their own. With patients under
Medicaid insurance there is still an issue Medicaid provides long term care, but only after a
patient has deplete his/her finances (Weston 2012). So how does this affect the organization
itself, now with lack of insurance you run the risk of not being paid for services already rendered.
The other risk involved is that if a patient is unable to pay for the care themselves then they have
to resort to other means of care, now the organization has empty beds. Empty beds mean that there
is not a high need for staff members resulting in layoffs. All of these risks can in fact the

Guinea Pigs Personal Statement
I have always had an affinity for animals; my entire life I have been surrounded by dogs, cats,
parrots, guinea pigs, and other miscellaneous creatures. Part my passion for animals turned to
showing guinea pigs competitively during middle and high school for five years. Sowing guinea
pigs is much like showing rabbits; the quality of the animaldetermines show placement. At the
height of my showing career, I had over one hundred guinea pigs for breeding and showing that I
personally cleaned, fed, watered and nurtured. During my time showing guinea pigs, I formed
connections with people from varying backgrounds and regions, and I even attended shows that
were held in Canada. I put in a lot of hours taking care of and handling my animals and was
rewarded with numerous Best in Show awards. My time showing guinea pigs taught me to be
committed to activities that I enjoyed, how to care for animals, and also allowed me to travel the
state and out of country to interact with people.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Kant s Categorical Imperative For Moral Knowledge
Kant s Categorical Imperative outlines a significant section of his ethics, concerning the search for
moral knowledge. This is a mechanism used in accordance with knowing how we ought to act,
rather than how we act instinctively through desires and appetites. The identification of the
Categorical Imperative is found through rationality and indeed must be equally applicable for all
reasonable human beings. Within this essay, I will initially outline Kant s first formulation of the
Categorical Imperativethen proceed to show that its credibility as an account of moral obligation is
lacking.
On account of Kant s first formulation of the Categorical Imperative; the Formula of the
Universal Law of Nature, certain decisions can only be made if they, act only on that maxim
through which you can at the same tie will that it should become a Universal Law .
Understanding a maxim as a principle or rule on which you take action, for example: I will make
it my maxim only to act in a respectful manner toward my parents. The idea is that rules that
cannot be maintained for a number of means should be discarded, as a moral obligation is an
obligation for all. It is obvious to all that in order for a principle to have any force in regard to
morality, it must carry with it absolute necessity (1898:130). If not, the obligation itself, as Kant
declares, is easily doubted. Empirical ethics isn t sufficient. An example commonly used refers to
the instruction, thou shalt not lie . In that,

OVERVIEW QUESTIONS:
1. Why should we care about evolution? Why is it important?
Evolution is the building blocks to biological science. If we did not care about evolution, we would
not understand the concept of biology, or any type of science for that matter.
2. What does it mean to be human? Did your concept change after reading the book?
After reading the book, I began to understand why my body looks the way it looks. I realized that
we are all the same inside from fish to monkeys, and even some reptiles. We all started from the
same thing. In my opinion, being human can be summed up into a simple definition a unique
individual. Although we all developed from a similar place, being different makes us human. Each

Relate this pattern to his idea of exceptional similarities.
The pattern that was discovered by Sir Richard Owen in the mid 1800s resembled the skeleton of a
human arm. Owen found several mammals which exhibited the one bone two bone lotsa blobs
digits pattern . This pattern that Owen found basically indicated that the location of the bones in the
arm were similar the humerus, radius, ulna, few wrist bones, and lastly, the digits. He found that
this pattern could also be found in the human legs.
2. How did Charles Darwin s theory explain these similarities that were observed by Owen?
Charles Darwin had a theory, essentially saying that the human body s arm and a bat s wing have the
same bony attributes because they once shared a common ancestor. Darwin s theory explains the
observations that Sir Richard Owen made from the pattern he found.
3. What did further examination of Tiktaalik s fins reveal about the creature and its lifestyle?
The further examination of Tiktaalik s fins revealed that it had wrists, similar to a human body.
Tiktaalik s wrists allowed it to maneuver its way to the base of shallow bodies of water.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder And The Syrian Civil War
When photographs were published of Aylan Kurdi, a three year old Syrian refugee who
drowned with his mother and older brother off the coast of Turkey, much of the world caught a
first time glimpse into the Syrian refugee crisis, a vast humanitarian emergency and byproduct of
the Syrian Civil War that continues to this day. A year later, video emerged of Omran Daqneesh,
a five year old boy shown sitting in the back of an ambulance, covered in dust and seemingly in
shock, blood caked to the side of his face. These photos alone illustrate the deep social need for
humanitarian assistance to Syrias almost five million refugees. With the civil war now in its sixth
year, almost 14 million people need assistance within Syria, while 6.6 million people are internally
displaced with nowhere to call home (Migration Policy Centre, 2016). Internally displaced persons
are often left with no choice but to flee their battered country. Forced migrationoften leads to
sickness, family disruption, shattered self esteem, and mental health problems including Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) (Hassan, Ventevogel, Jefee Bahloul, Barkil Oteo, Kirmayer,
2016). Unfortunately, this is just a short list of consequences. The Syrian refugeecrisis is one of the
most critical and difficult concerns facing social workers today, in the United States and abroad.

Comment On Humanistic School Of Psychology
Comment on humanistic school of psychology.
Humanistic school of psychology gained importance in midst of 20th century. The limitations of
Sigmund Freud s psycho analytic theory and B.F Skinner s behaviourism formed the basis of
Humanistic school of psychology .
Humanistic psychologists start from the conclusion that every person has their own unique way of
understanding the world and that the things they do only make sense in this way. Consequently,
the kinds of questions they ask about people differ from those asked by psychologists from other
approaches. Whereas other approaches take an objective view of people, in essence asking about

subjectivity, asking what is it like to be this person As a result, they reject the objective scientific

Assistive Technology In Special Education
This article focuses on the many forms of technology in relation to special education. The article
discusses the high and low forms of technology that is available for students with special needs to
help bypass or compensate for their disabilities. The article goes on to survey the current status of
assistive technologyfor the special educationpopulation. In the end, the article uncovers that the use
of assistive technology for the special educationpopulation is promising though uncertain.
Assistive technology has proven to be beneficial for students with learning disabilities, as it
would empower them to work beyond their normal capabilities (Lewis, 1998). An assistive
technology device can be an item, software system, or piece of equipment used to increase,
improve, or maintain the functional capabilities of a student with disabilities. It can help a
person with a disability complete tasks they need to perform on a daily basis. Assistive
technology services serve to directly assist students with disabilities in the selection or use of an
assistive technology device. For some students with disabilities, assistive technology is important
because they would not be able to benefit form their educational program. Assistive technology is
a part of the Individualized Education Plan for each student. The educational team for the student
must ask if there is a device that will improve their functional capabilities. If the educational team
discovers that the child could benefit from a device that fits that description, the school district is
required to provide the service along with training to use the device (Lewis, 1998). The author of
this article is a professor in the Department of Special Education at San Diego University. In
addition to his participation in the Department of Special Education at the University, Rena B.

University doctoral program. She focuses much of her research on the application of technology
for individuals with learning disabilities. Her qualifications alone would make me feel confident in

states to be ratified on November 15, 1777. The Articles of Confederation was ratified and
They reserved to each state and not to the national government. The national government consisted
of a congress with only one chamber that was elected by the state legislature in which each state
had a vote. Congress had the right to request funds but could not put taxes on things without every
state s approval. Lastly, an approval was required by all states to ratify the articles. The articles
gave the states all the freedom and United States just had few right overall. The Articles of

out and awkward . She is always getting in trouble with the principle at school, and explains to
her mom that she hates being different. When Meg and her friends arrived at Camazotz, she
sees that everyone and everything is the same, and there she relizes how much she appriciates
being unique. Another theme within the book is light vs darkness. This is showed through the
three W s, Meg and her friends as they battle against IT,the Dark Thing and the Man with the Red
Eyes. Mrs. Whatsit is also refered to the jesus figure, as she is a fighter against evil and turn into
a celestial creature. Madeleine shows the readers to just be unique, just because you arn t the
same as everyone else, does not mean you need to conform to fit in or be loved. I would
definetly reccomend this book to anyone, at any age and who loves fantasy and adventure type
books. Every page I read I was hooked more and more because Madeleine s writting was always
interesting. When you think one thing is going to happen, something interesting and cool would
pop right around the corner. Madeleine also had a very nice way of portraying her characters,
every one in her book was interesting and unique, and all had their own litle back ground story.

The Religious Beliefs Of Guru Nanak Dev Ji
Guru Nanak Dev Ji formed the monotheistic faith, Sikhism in the fifteenth century (Sikh Beliefs,
n.d.). Sikhs believe that Guru Nanak Dev Ji, along with the following nine Gurus, was sent by God
himself to deliver His message (Sikh Beliefs, n.d.). In addition, Sikhs believe that a single spirit
inhabited all ten Gurus (McLeod, 2017). Furthermore, beliefs include that upon the death of the
10th, Guru Gobind Singh, the spirit of the eternal Guru transferred itself into the scripture of
Sikhism(McLeod, 2017).
Like Christianity, Sikhism recognizes that there is only one God; however, Sikhs believe that a
believer s salvation depends on their mystical union with God (Brodd, 2015). Although some
mystical concept of God is present within Christian belief, such as Saint Teresa of Avila, for the
most part, Christian s maintain a clear cut distinction between God as Creator and human beings as
one of God s creations (Brodd, 2015). Furthermore, Sikhs view God as shapeless, timeless, and
sightless while Christians maintain an image of Jesus as the God (Sikhism vs Christianity, 2010).
Religious views of the purpose of life also contrast. Sikhs lifestyle was created by Sikh Guru.
Overall, Sikhism has based on the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev as well as the following nine
gurus (Sikhism vs Christianity, 2010). Teachings are compiled within the Holy Book known as the
Guru Granth Sahib, which serves Sikhs eternal guru (Sikhism vs Christianity, n.d.). In addition,

Powerful Issues Caused By Media Censorship And The Harm It...
In our modern world, most world leaders tend to argue against media censorship and the
suppression of one of our most basic human right, freedom of expression. We live in a globalized
society, that shares news and information in matter of seconds, with newspapers, a blog post, a
Facebook opinion or with a 140 character block called Tweet. If we have the accessibility to
these outlets, which most of us do, we can learn about the result of the presidential election in
Peru or we can learn about the dreads of the war in the Middle East. All of these seem so obvious
and practical for us, yet we have not experienced the suffering and struggle the people of China or
Cuba have suffered and keep suffering. It is inconceivable for governmentleaders to continue
enforcing such deterrent regulations that halt the overall progress of that affected society in
economic, political and social terms. Therefore, this essay will examine the powerful issues caused
by media censorshipand the harm it does on the development of a globalized society.
With all the communication tools we have today, our methods to connect with each other facilitate
business, dialogue, negotiation and many more factors that help us grow as a society. The
implementation of such negative and destructive polices like media censorship that leads to the
affected society s seclusion from the world is limiting us from expanding economically. It is
imperative to emphasize the harm these policies have on the global economy.

The Stapedial Or Acoustic Reflex ( Ar )
ABSTRACT:
The Stapedial or Acoustic Reflex (AR) is the contraction of the stapedius muscle in response to an
adequately loud sound. Bilateral reflex pathways are involved in this occurrence. The aim of the
study was to compare the test retest variability on an individual, following a short interval, after the
initial test, and also to compare the ARs with pure tone thresholds. The subject had a normal
hearing sensitivity, with bilateral A type tympanogram, which indicated normal functioning of the
middle ear, and bilateral AR thresholds within normal limits. It was delineated that AR was elicited
with requisite intense acoustic signal and this test can be used as a diagnostic tool in collaterally
with pure tone audiometry.
INTRODUCTION:
When a sufficiently intense acoustic signal is presented to either of the ears, stapedius muscle in
both the ears contract, as a response to this sound. This phenomenon is termed as AR.
Stapes, the smallest middle ear ossicle is attached with a small striated muscle (stapedius muscle) on
the side. In response to a loud sound, this muscle contracts, pulling the stapes laterally, which in
turn reduced the force by which the footplate of the stapes propels against the oval window. This
action permits a considerable protection against loud and stable background noise, but not against
sudden loud sounds (e.g.: bomb blast).
There are several theories stating the need for AR.

Serene was a word you could put to Brooklyn, New York. Especially in the summer of 1912 (5),
is the famous first sentence in Betty Smith s bestseller, A Tree Grows In Brooklyn (ATGIB).
Joche says this book reads realistically because it was prepared for us not by a statistician with
an array of facts and figures, not by a sociologist presenting a carefully prepared case history, not
by a participant observer who has for a brief period lived among the group, nor by a psychologist,
a historian, or an economist, but by one who naturally combines all of these who, herself, is a
member of the group about which she writes. (240)
Betty Smith was born in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in 1896, which helps her accurately portray the
life of the Nolan s because it is similar to the one she lived. The time period in which the Nolans

Analysis of DostoevskyВґs Crime and Punishment Essay example
In Dostoevsky s Crime and Punishment, the murder of the pawnbroker bears little significance
when compared to the punishment that Raskolnikov endures. The murder is the direct result of
Raskolnikov s Ubermensch theory. Though it takes a while for Raskolnikov to realize the
profound mistake in his theory and in his logic, his tedious yet prolific journey eventually leads him
to redemption. Suffering, guilt and societal alienation prompt Raskolnikov to reject his
Ubermensch theory and ultimately achieve redemption. Through Raskolnikov s character,
Dostoevsky reveals that the psychological punishment inflicted by an unethical action is more
effective in leading to self realizationthan any physical punishment.

comes with such an unethical action. Even when Porfiry suggests that the criminal who

Raskolnikov becomes infuriated and accuses Porfiry of trying to scare him. However,
Raskolnikov fails to understand the meaning behind Porfiry s words perhaps because he still

The Shift of Modern Technology Technology has always been changing and evolving. Whether it
is discovering ways to cultivate plants and animals or if it is developing the smallest nano
technology to be used in space, there is never a time where scientists and inventors are not coming
up with new things to better our quality of life and to change how we work in society. The last
decade has been especially important to the development of technology in many different aspects
such as healthcare, or globalization. The contemporary shift of technology within the last decade
has been a revolutionary stepping stone into the possibilities of the future. The changes in
healthcare have been excitingly revolutionary and act as a very large gate into the possibilities of
the future for health services. The way that hospitals store their data has changed monumentally.
This change allows for faster accessibility to health information of a patient and even allows for a
patient to access their own health records if they want to. This change in speed is very different
from the old paper records of the past, and the more things that health services moves on to a
technological database, the safer the information is and the faster it can be obtained. Another thing
that all this information being quickly available is that healthcare is receivable almost anywhere in
this day and age. With all this freedom, some people in the healthcare

cells becomes abnormal and start to divide uncontrollably and from tumors. A frightening thing to

disease is severe, the treatment is also severe and sometimes chemotherapy and radiation do not

This has directly lead to the cost of genome sequencing to sharp decline. Before the project the
cost to map out a human genome was one billion dollars, after the project was completed it had to
decline to ten to 50 million dollars. Now, ten years after the completion of the Human Genome
Project the cost to map out a human genome is only three to five thousand dollars. ( Quantitative
Advances Since the Human Genome Project (HGP) ) This number is predicted to keep declining
as well, in part because of company competition and the increase popularity of genetic mapping.
Another reason is because the National Human Genome Research Institute has new goals to
expand the use of genetic mapping which includes finding ways to lower the cost of genome
sequencing to less than a thousand dollars. It would be a huge feat but a goal the Institute could
manage to realize in the next ten years. ( Decade of Genomics NHGRI Celebrates 10th Anniversary

There was a little unforeseen additional to the National Institutes of Health, which is the Cancer
Genome Atlas. The whole goal of this program is to use genetic mapping to its full potential when
it comes to cancer research, diagnosis, treatment and prevention. The National Cancer Institute
parented with the National Human Genome Research Institute, to conduct a wide spread, large
scale genome sequencing on over twenty different types of cancer.

Right now, many forests are being relentlessly decimated in order to meet our needs. In the poem
Binsey Poplars written by Gerard Manley Hopkins in 1879, the speaker considers this issue while
lamenting over the destruction of a line of poplar trees. In this essay, I will argue that the poem
shows mankind s own fragility through the felling of the trees because of the speaker s emphasis on
the contrast between nature and its destruction and the way nature and humans are associated with
the use of imagery and figurative language. I will first examine the poem s sorrowful tone and the

The speaker uses this event to expand his view on the way mankind destroys nature without
meaning to. In the second and third stanzas, we are actually blamed for this irreversible damage,
as seen in O if we but knew what we do / When we delve or hew (9 10) and To mend her we end
her (16). By using the first person plural pronoun, the speaker includes not only themselves, but
also the reader, who is also a human being, and in a general sense, part of mankind. However,
humans are not only the agent of destruction, but the object of it as well. For instance, the
repetition of the letter l in All felled, felled, are all felled (3) may form a visual representation of
a line of trees, or a line of people. Moreover, there is a personification of nature throughout the
poem; according to the speaker, nature is a woman, as said in Since country is so tender / To

Later, a doctor comes and checks Frederic s leg. He advises Frederic to wait until his leg has
healed six months before they operate, but Frederic is impatient, and asks the opinion of
another doctor, Dr.Valentini. Dr. Valentini says that Frederic can be operated on the next day.
The night of the operation, Catherine visits Frederic in his hospital room. Catherine is overly
sweet and vows to do whatever Frederic wants. Frederic s surgery goes well. In the summertime,
while Frederic s leg is healing, Catherine and Frederic enjoy a number of romantic dates
involving horse drawn carriages, fine wines and long walks. In the midst of one of their dates,
Frederic brings up marriage. Catherine admits that she feels as if she is already married, and
wishes to stay unmarried in order to stay close to the front where Frederic is stationed. One day
in the summertime, Frederic and Catherine and a few of their friends decide to go to the races.
There, they bet on horses and find out that the racing in Milan was very crooked. In September,
Frederic sees that fighting at the front has gotten bad, but to distract himself from the war news
he reads the news on baseball. He later sees Catherine who tells him she is three months along
with a child. Frederic is ecstatic about the child. A day later, Frederic is sick with jaundice. That
same day, Miss Van Campen finds several bottles of brandy in Frederic s closet. She scolds him,
thinking that he self inflicted the disease to escape the front. Frederic tells her he didn t, but she
still sends him to the front immediately. Frederic prepares to leave Milan. He buys a pistol, says
goodbye to the nurses, and spends his last few hours in a hotel with Catherine. Section II: Quotes

An obese 50 year old male is brought to the emergency department by ambulance with the
complaint of acute chest pain. The pain had an initial onset an hour ago while he was walking
outside around his neighborhood. It came on suddenly and was so severe that it made the patient
collapse to the floor . The pain has a pressure like feeling and the patient holds a fist over his
sternum when showing the physicians where the pain is found and how it feels. The severity is
described as an 8/10. The pain is not getting better and there is nothing he has found that either
makes it either worse or relieves it. The pain does radiate to his right arm. The pain makes the
patient feel short of breath. He denies any other associated symptoms. He... Show more content on

Essay on Worth in Everyday Use
A Question of Worth in Everyday Use
From the fashionable, expensive clothing that the character Dee in Alice Walker s Everyday Use
wears, the girl seems almost immediately to be a person of great value and importance. It may
seem, too, at first glance, that Dee s mother and sister, Maggie, in their tin roof house and shabby
clothing, are of little or no worth in Everyday Use. The story ironically shows, under more careful
thought, that the very outer characteristics which deem Dee the more valuable character are the ones
which prove that the mother and Maggie have the more powerful inner worth.
In the beginning of the story, Dee is portrayed to be more physically valuable than her mother and
Maggie. Dee s outfit reeks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Houston A. Baker, Jr. and Charlotte Pierce Baker suggest that Ultimately, the framed Polaroid
photograph represents the limits of Dee s vision (416). With close examination, the camera, which
represents Dee s material wealth, can also be used to prove her inability to see people, places and
things for what and who they really are.
By far the most striking piece of evidence supporting Dee s lack of inner value is her desire to
have the quilts. At first, Dee s anger over being denied the quilts seems justified. Dee claims that
she would preserve the quilts and Hang them (1154). Yet, the real purpose of possessing the
quilts, as seen on a larger scope, is to use the old quilts for the simple life the mother and Maggie
lead. To actually put the quilts to everyday use, as Maggie will do, is symbolically preserving the
family heritage. Dee s cry that Maggie would probably be backward enough to put them to
everyday use (1154) portrays Dee as the materialistic, backward character.
Just as the argument over the quilts shows Dee as intrinsically immature, it directly points out that
the mother and Dee have, in fact, great value within them. Dee s mother, for instance, is at first
silent to Dee s demands to have the butter churn and wooden benches. When Dee takes the quilts,
previously promised to Maggie, the mother then becomes defensive. The mother questions Dee s
intended use of the quilts in an effort to deter Dee from her insistence of owning

Why Reality Shows Can Be Entertaining and Offensive
How Reality Shows Can Be Offensive and Entertaining While some reality shows can be
offensive, I am somewhat entertained by other reality shows. Reality TV usually consists of
people making complete fools of themselves or just trying to get their 15 minutes of fame.
Although, some people, like Jon Gosselin and Elisabeth Hasselbeck have become quite famous
this way. There are some that center on celebrities and others that follow everyday people. I think
the reality shows that star actual celebrities, like Celebrity Apprentice and Dancing with the Stars,
are offensive because the celebrities on these shows already have money and they go on the shows
and get paid for their time. Celebrity Fit Club, in my opinion, is the most... Show more content on

They have covered topics like addiction, adoption, relationships, and diseases/illnesses. My
favorite reality show is Cake Boss. It doesn t help people like the others do but it is very
entertaining for me. Cake Boss centers on a close Italian family at a bakery that was first started
by now owner, Buddy Valastro s father. They have made so many unique cakes based on what
the customer wants. He even made a cake for his wife that was a bust of her head. They also
made a cake modeled after a toilet for a plumber that was retiring. They even allowed some
children from Make a Wish foundation to come in and make some cakes of their own and then
the bakers surprised the kids with a large cake for a foundation party. Reality shows can be both
entertaining and offensive, depending on the plots and themes of the shows. I like many of them,
while others I think they could do without. For some reason, the more offensive shows get high
ratings so they keep coming back for more

Gates Vs Cambridge Police Case Study
Gates vs. The Cambridge Police: The Cause of Controversy
On July 20, 2009 a police dispatcher received a call from a concerned woman who believed a
robbery was in progress. Lucia Whalen, the witness, reported seeing two black males with
backpacks trying to gain entry into the home. From there police were immediately sent to the
residence on Ware Street to investigate the situation. At around 12:45 P.M. Sergeant James
Crowley met with the woman who placed the 9 1 1 call. In the police report, he stated that he had
become aware of an older, black male standing in the foyer as he was speaking with Lucia Whalen
outside . The man, later identified as Henry Louis Gates, Jr., was the owner of the residential home
located on 17 Ware Street in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Everyone has an excuse to justify their inappropriate behavior but nobody wants point out others
faults out of fear of being known as intolerant or racist . Henry Gates attributed the incident to his
black skin, along with Barrack Obama, the black community and the media which circulated the
incident resulting in more racial conflict and division. If the Sergeant was indeed driven by
racist intent then the man who teaches diversity ethics to all the new cadets is in the wrong
profession and needs to reevaluate his call of duty. In conjunction to the officers actions to
continue to question the well known, Professor Gates, he could have been making an example of
the repercussions that ensue when you fail to comply and shout accusations based on bias.
Situations are going to arise that might not be fair, right or even believable. However, the way
you carry yourself through the trials will determine not only your character but it can also have a
huge effect on the outcome .For example, my father oncehad a very similar encounter as Professor
Gates. One night he set the house alarm without knowing the password and accidentally opened the
door the following morning to get the daily paper. As he stood in the driveway glancing through
the front page news, several patrol cars came

Summary Of Smith s Wealth Of Nations
In Smith s Wealth of Nations, he argues the existence of a natural order. Unless there is some
other human entity messing with that natural order, in the long run commodities will have a
certain natural price. Smith also argues that labor is a commodity, in that the supply of labor
(population) is regulated by demand for labor. He smoothly remarks that if supply exceeds
demand, the price of labor decreases and society then adjusts the supply of labor. Malthus, in his
piece An Essay on the Principles of Population, elaborates on this idea, explaining how much
strife is due to an over supply of labor, that is to say overpopulation. He warns against the masses
and any extreme action they might take, advocating that the poor be illuminated as to the genuine
source of their wretchedness and taught to breed less so they can enjoy higher wages. The biggest
split between Smith and his intellectual children; Malthus, Ricardo, and Sumner, more strongly in
the latter two cases, is that Smith, being a good Calvinist, included a moral compass in his natural
state while the others did not. He believed that people, rather than living in excess, would devote
their excess profits as capital, reinvesting it so as to produce... Show more content on

Sumner says that the wealthy should not be forced to support the upkeep of good for nothings,
that is to say the poor. He argues that if the poor can count on subsistence without working, this
would render them into a truly privileged class. He also argues that doing so will rob fathers of a
moral lesson with which they can instill character in their offspring if a man must give up his
property to support the poor, why should he save that money in the first place? Sumner also argues
that in America, the existence of civil liberty gives everyone a chance to succeed, and the ones who
succeed simply have the most resolute and enterprising

  • 3. Army Varsity Team Problem Identification: The problem identified in the HBR Case Study the Army Crew Team was Coach P s assumption that choosing the most physically fit rowers would yield a high performing team. Coach P. failed to understand how team dynamics, morale, and overall emotional intelligence of the team can inhibit teamsuccess. Alternative Analysis: Coach P. was baffled why the Varsity team performed poorly as opposed to the non Varsity team. While he put much thought with selecting the most physically fit team mates, he failed to understand the importance of recognizing and working through issues in relation to emotional intelligence. The Varsity group kept pointing the finger on others, failing to recognize and take accountability for their overall subpar performance. Rather than work through the negative team dynamics, they often emailed their complaints to the coach. An emotionally intelligent group would have worked through their issues together as a group. If someone is acting out of line, the team members must feel comfortable calling the foul. The team needed to build positive norms such as responding constructively in emotionally uncomfortable situations (Amabille, 2013). The team did not share ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As mentioned earlier, an emotionally intelligent team will hold eachother accountable with working through negative areas. • 4. The Golden Age Of Piracy Essay The Golden Age of Piracy existed within the Atlantic World in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It was during this time that the enterprise of piracy expanded and then abruptly ended. During this time, privateering was also an active enterprise ebbing and flowing with international conflicts. The line between the two was often blurred and created a political conundrum that people on both sides found it difficult to navigate. The life of a pirate was appealing to many on land and sea. The common conception of piracyportrays the enterprise as a disorganized anarchy. This is not true, piracy was a complex entity within the Atlantic world. The enterprise of piracy and privateering was complex as it navigated the seas, the Atlantic... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These interactions show that piracy was more than criminal activity, it was a business. John Appleby extensively covers the relationships between pirates and women. Some were married, like Edward Teach (Blackbeard), who was married multiple times. A few became pirates to escape marriage, like Stede Bonnet. Women had many roles in relation to piracy. They were receivers and maintainers who conducted business with pirates: they bought plunder, provided lodging and safe houses, and provided entertainment and food. (APPLEBY 5). The role of women grew along with the growth of river piracy where they took part in brokering and distributing stolen plunder. These discrete networks helped piracy succeed (APPLEBY 5). At pirate bases, such as Port Royal, women were a source of entertainment and pleasure. Women were not immune from the violence and abuse that accompanied pirates wherever they went. Evidence suggests female abuse by pirates peaked during the Golden Age in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries when long distance plunder emerged, weakening the links ashore. Piracy remained a largely male experience, with just a few notable female pirates, such as Anne ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They employ over 70% of Singapore s workforce and generate about 50% of the country s total GDP. Most SMEs in Singapore grow from small enterprises into large competitive companies. Manufacturing and wholesale SME sectors have increased impressively with the number of employees in these sectors increasing by up to 8%. SMEs in the Finance, Property and holdings sector hold the top three sectors in terms of the amount of profits accrued. Competitive strategies in Singapore s SMEs are based on the 3MK key success factors; Management, Markets, Money and Knowhow (Bull Winter, 1991). Setting The Scene From Block Grant Based Funding Setting the scene Claire McCartney, research adviser at the CIPD and author of the report, comments: There seems to be a real lack of awareness amongst senior managers, who rate the trust levels much stronger than more junior employees. It seems they either have a tendency to view things through rose tinted glasses, or are out of touch with how employees nearer the coalface are feeling. If senior leaders are in denial or burying their heads in the sand, there is a danger that a them and us mentality will emerge and change will be very difficult to achieve. , and a transition from block grant based funding to student loan based funding of teaching has taken place. • 9. Rhetorical Analysis Of Lou Gehrig s Farewell To Baseball June 19th, 1939 one of the New York Yankees and baseball s most famous first baseman, Lou Gehrig, was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis after six days of extensive testing. Fifteen days later on July 4th, 1939 Lou Gehrig flew to Yankee stadium in New York and gave his famous, Farewell to Baseball speech. The speech wasn t just for Yankees fans, but for all fans of baseball. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS for short, is a a nervous system disease that weakens muscles and impacts physical function, usually killing the person in two to five years. Gehrig knew he didn t have long. That s why fifteen days after his diagnosis Gehrig was standing at home plate in Yankee stadium telling all baseball fans of his retirement due to illness. In under 300 words, using ethos, logos, and pathos, Gehrig transformed how baseball fans viewed him, not just as a player, but as a person. Gehrig showed the world how strong willed and fearless a person can be in the face of adversity. The credibility, or ethos, of Gehrig s speech was already there before he ever started the speech. At the time of the speech Gehrig held one MLB record, Gehrig had played in 2,130 consecutive baseball games, quite possibly the most honorable MLB record. He was very well known and well respected by all fans and players. In his speech Gehrig says, Who wouldn t consider it an honor to have known Jacob Ruppert? Also, the builder of baseball s greatest empire, Ed Barrow? To have spent six years with that wonderful little fellow, Miller Huggins? Then to have spent the next nine years with that outstanding leader, that smart student of psychology, the best manager in baseball today, Joe McCarthy? (1). In saying it showed his personal side of his baseball career, the places he has been, and the people he s had the wonderful opportunity to play baseball with. The respect the fans and players had for Gehrig only made his speech more credible, Lou Gehrig was loved by all baseball fans. The biggest part of Gehrig s speech is pathos, or the emotional part of his speech. In the first lines of the speech Gehrig grabs the audience s attention with emotional appeal by saying Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about a bad break I ... • 10. The Last Star Character Analysis Effort Determines the Outcome Rick Yancey s science fiction novel, The Last Star, takes place in a modern day society where the government has become corrupted and is now working against the human race. Most of the people left after the 5 waves, barely even try to stay alive. They know the odds of surviving is a lot to a little, so they think what is the point of staying alive a week longer. Although, a group of 6 people try their hardest and their best to stay alive. These 6 people are probably the only 6 people in their world that is trying to stay alive. And because they try their best, they end up surviving much longer than other people. This suggests that a possible theme for Rick Yanceys The Last Star is that however much ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That gave Cassie the time to set the trap into motion. Because she thought and took in her surroundings, she was able to escape the silencer and return to Ringer. In the ache of time grinding to a crawl, the power line falls from the prey s hand in a graceful, sweeping arc. The light sparks off exposed wires as they descend languidly as snow. The line that gracefully falls slips through the silencer s fingers. The light glints off the wires as the touch ground, silently, like falling snow (Yancey 298). This shows how Cassie took in her surroundings and came up with a better way to handle her situation. She knew how once a silencer, you are faster, stronger, and better in every physical way. She knew she would be beaten if she tried to run, so she decided to eliminate the silencer. This is important because it helps show another critical example of how the theme fits this story. The theme fits this scene because Cassie tried her best to create a trap that would work against the silencer, and because she put so much effort into it, she ended up succeeding and returning to Ringer. This refers back to the theme, because Cassie did exactly what the theme is. When a problem was handed to her, she tried her best to solve it, and in return her solution worked. An example of author s craft that Rick Yancey uses in The Last Star is exploding the moment. One scene where this takes place, is when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Restore the Youth, Restore the Community A Collaborative Action Plan to Reduce Recidivism in Englewood LuGary Davis Urban Community Development PPA 505 Professor James L. Miles Sr. March 17, 2015 Overview The chief problem in any community cursed with crime is not the punishment of the criminals, but the preventing of the young from being trained to crime (Du Bois, 1903). Though W.E.B. Du Bois wrote this quote well over a century ago, it still reflects the truth we hold today. This is especially apparent when we examine the intent of the modern juvenile justice system. The juvenile justice system operates under a system referred to as juvenile court. Although this system was developed in Cook County, Illinois in the late ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These reforms encompass everything from the use of solitary confinement to guidelines that prevent a youth from even entering the institutional side of juvenile justice by using community resources (E. Blaskey, personal communication, February 28, 2015). One of the most popular ideas motivating this reform is the concept of restorative justice. Restorative justice looks at accountability a bit differently from previous classic models. In the past, accountability was about the punishment matching the crime which boils down to the classic biblical thought, an eye for an eye. Restorative justice defines accountability as taking responsibility for your behavior and taking action to repair the harm (BARJ, 1995). Instead of completing a punishment unrelated to the victims, in restorative justice, an offender must come to terms with the outcome of their behavior to the victims and other vital stakeholders in an effort to help heal all parties. The neighborhood of Englewood in Chicago, Illinois definitely knows the effects of juvenile crime on their community. Englewood is located on Chicago s south side and is bordered by Garfield Boulevard to the north, 75th Street to the south, Racine Avenue to the west and State Street to the east. If you asked me about my ideal day, it would consist of having a M*A*S*H palooza complete with hot chocolate and that super buttery popcorn that makes you feel all greasy. What I like most about M*A*S*H is that it s not just a show. It discusses various controversial topics that are still relevant today. For instance, in one episode, the characters disobeyed their commanding officer in order to aid a soldier who was terrified of war. What they highlighted was that kindness should outweigh orders. But criminalizing homelessness will have many negative effects, it will hurt the chances of the homeless getting jobs and getting off the streets, volunteer groups are creating projects to help create housing for the homeless, and the homeless are already treated poorly, and looked down upon by society. Ever since Bitcoin first began trading, investors as well as miners have proclaimed the positive and negative aspects of the virtual currency, though the fluctuation in price of Bitcoin has been very difficult to determine. This research paper look analyzes some of the issues that must be addressed to ensure the future of Bitcoin. Introduction The first form of cyptocurrency, Bitcoins are the first type of digital currency that is both created and subsequently managed by cryptography, rather than a central authority (Kinsella 2013). The Bitcoin architecture was outlined in a research paper by Satoshi Nakamoto, which led to the creation of a decentralized network, allowing the peer to peer digital currency to be owned and traded (Smith 2013). After several years of development, Bitcoin was launched in 2009, and exists solely within the Block Chain (explained later). Creation of Bitcoins The architecture of Bitcoin utilizes a validation system, based on a sequence of recent transactions and numerical proofs of work, which are passed through an SHA 256 hashing algorithm (twice) (Smith 2013). The result of this is a block , which follows very precise mathematical criteria, and requires an exact numerical to solve. These required numericals are extremely difficult to calculate. This is a mechanism used in accordance with knowing how we ought to act, rather than how we act instinctively through desires and appetites. The identification of the Categorical Imperative is found through rationality and indeed must be equally applicable for all reasonable human beings. Within this essay, I will initially outline Kant s first formulation of the Categorical Imperativethen proceed to show that its credibility as an account of moral obligation is lacking. On account of Kant s first formulation of the Categorical Imperative; the Formula of the Universal Law of Nature, certain decisions can only be made if they, act only on that maxim through which you can at the same tie will that it should become a Universal Law . Understanding a maxim as a principle or rule on which you take action, for example: I will make it my maxim only to act in a respectful manner toward my parents. The idea is that rules that cannot be maintained for a number of means should be discarded, as a moral obligation is an obligation for all. It is obvious to all that in order for a principle to have any force in regard to morality, it must carry with it absolute necessity (1898:130). In our modern world, most world leaders tend to argue against media censorship and the suppression of one of our most basic human right, freedom of expression. We live in a globalized society, that shares news and information in matter of seconds, with newspapers, a blog post, a Facebook opinion or with a 140 character block called Tweet. If we have the accessibility to these outlets, which most of us do, we can learn about the result of the presidential election in Peru or we can learn about the dreads of the war in the Middle East. All of these seem so obvious and practical for us, yet we have not experienced the suffering and struggle the people of China or Cuba have suffered and keep suffering. It is inconceivable for governmentleaders to continue enforcing such deterrent regulations that halt the overall progress of that affected society in economic, political and social terms. Therefore, this essay will examine the powerful issues caused by media censorshipand the harm it does on the development of a globalized society. With all the communication tools we have today, our methods to connect with each other facilitate business, dialogue, negotiation and many more factors that help us grow as a society. • 33. The Stapedial Or Acoustic Reflex ( Ar ) ABSTRACT: The Stapedial or Acoustic Reflex (AR) is the contraction of the stapedius muscle in response to an adequately loud sound. Bilateral reflex pathways are involved in this occurrence. The aim of the study was to compare the test retest variability on an individual, following a short interval, after the initial test, and also to compare the ARs with pure tone thresholds. The subject had a normal hearing sensitivity, with bilateral A type tympanogram, which indicated normal functioning of the middle ear, and bilateral AR thresholds within normal limits. It was delineated that AR was elicited with requisite intense acoustic signal and this test can be used as a diagnostic tool in collaterally with pure tone audiometry. INTRODUCTION: When a sufficiently intense acoustic signal is presented to either of the ears, stapedius muscle in both the ears contract, as a response to this sound. This phenomenon is termed as AR. Stapes, the smallest middle ear ossicle is attached with a small striated muscle (stapedius muscle) on the side. In response to a loud sound, this muscle contracts, pulling the stapes laterally, which in turn reduced the force by which the footplate of the stapes propels against the oval window. This action permits a considerable protection against loud and stable background noise, but not against sudden loud sounds (e.g.: bomb blast). In the second and third stanzas, we are actually blamed for this irreversible damage, as seen in O if we but knew what we do / When we delve or hew (9 10) and To mend her we end her (16). By using the first person plural pronoun, the speaker includes not only themselves, but also the reader, who is also a human being, and in a general sense, part of mankind. However, humans are not only the agent of destruction, but the object of it as well. For instance, the repetition of the letter l in All felled, felled, are all felled (3) may form a visual representation of a line of trees, or a line of people. Moreover, there is a personification of nature throughout the poem; according to the speaker, nature is a woman, as said in Since country is so tender / To touch, her being so slender (12 13) and To mend her we end her (17). • 39. Radiologic Encephalitis Research Paper Diagnosis and management Clinical syndromes are never pathognomonic for a paraneoplastic aetiology and a high index of clinical suspicion is important. Symptoms can be atypical, psychiatric or even fluctuating and PNS should often be in the differential diagnosis of otherwise unexplained severe neurological syndromes. Radiologic findings are especially important to rule out other possible causes; in case of PNS they often render aspecific findings. As an exception, CT and MRI reveal temporal lobe abnormalities in 65 80% of patients with limbic encephalitis (LE)(Dalmau and Rosenfeld 2008) and often some degree of cerebellar atrophy is seen in the chronic stage of predominantly cerebellar syndromes. In patients suffering from paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration (PCD),... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because of overlapping syndromes in separate antibodies, paraneoplastic antibodies should be searched for by screening rather than by focusing on a specific antibody. Unfortunately, not all patients with paraneoplastic syndromes have identifiable antibodies in their serum. Once a paraneoplastic etiology is strongly suspected, a careful search for the underlying neoplasm is mandatory. If detailed history taking, thorough physical examination and high resolution computed tomography (CT) of chest, abdomen and pelvis do not show a primary tumor, whole body positron emission tomography (PET) or PET/CT may be the best screening method for locating the occult cancer(Patel et al. 2008). Besides, the type of antibody and paraneoplastic syndrome may suggest a specific underlying tumor and indicate more directed diagnostic tests, such as mammography (or MRI) when breast cancer is suspected. With positive antibody screening and strong suspicion of paraneoplastic disease, negative tumor search should be repeated at 3 6 months intervals for 2 3 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 42. Essay on Worth in Everyday Use A Question of Worth in Everyday Use From the fashionable, expensive clothing that the character Dee in Alice Walker s Everyday Use wears, the girl seems almost immediately to be a person of great value and importance. It may seem, too, at first glance, that Dee s mother and sister, Maggie, in their tin roof house and shabby clothing, are of little or no worth in Everyday Use. The story ironically shows, under more careful thought, that the very outer characteristics which deem Dee the more valuable character are the ones which prove that the mother and Maggie have the more powerful inner worth. In the beginning of the story, Dee is portrayed to be more physically valuable than her mother and Maggie. Dee s outfit reeks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Houston A. Baker, Jr. and Charlotte Pierce Baker suggest that Ultimately, the framed Polaroid photograph represents the limits of Dee s vision (416). With close examination, the camera, which represents Dee s material wealth, can also be used to prove her inability to see people, places and things for what and who they really are. By far the most striking piece of evidence supporting Dee s lack of inner value is her desire to have the quilts. At first, Dee s anger over being denied the quilts seems justified. Dee claims that she would preserve the quilts and Hang them (1154). Yet, the real purpose of possessing the quilts, as seen on a larger scope, is to use the old quilts for the simple life the mother and Maggie lead. To actually put the quilts to everyday use, as Maggie will do, is symbolically preserving the family heritage. Dee s cry that Maggie would probably be backward enough to put them to everyday use (1154) portrays Dee as the materialistic, backward character. Just as the argument over the quilts shows Dee as intrinsically immature, it directly points out that the mother and Dee have, in fact, great value within them. Dee s mother, for instance, is at first silent to Dee s demands to have the butter churn and wooden benches. When Dee takes the quilts, previously promised to Maggie, the mother then becomes defensive. The mother questions Dee s intended use of the quilts in an effort to deter Dee from her insistence of owning ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Why Reality Shows Can Be Entertaining and Offensive How Reality Shows Can Be Offensive and Entertaining While some reality shows can be offensive, I am somewhat entertained by other reality shows. Reality TV usually consists of people making complete fools of themselves or just trying to get their 15 minutes of fame. Although, some people, like Jon Gosselin and Elisabeth Hasselbeck have become quite famous this way. There are some that center on celebrities and others that follow everyday people. • 47. Summary Of Smith s Wealth Of Nations In Smith s Wealth of Nations, he argues the existence of a natural order. Unless there is some other human entity messing with that natural order, in the long run commodities will have a certain natural price. Smith also argues that labor is a commodity, in that the supply of labor (population) is regulated by demand for labor. He smoothly remarks that if supply exceeds demand, the price of labor decreases and society then adjusts the supply of labor. Malthus, in his piece An Essay on the Principles of Population, elaborates on this idea, explaining how much strife is due to an over supply of labor, that is to say overpopulation. He warns against the masses and any extreme action they might take, advocating that the poor be illuminated as to the genuine source of their wretchedness and taught to breed less so they can enjoy higher wages. The biggest split between Smith and his intellectual children; Malthus, Ricardo, and Sumner, more strongly in the latter two cases, is that Smith, being a good Calvinist, included a moral compass in his natural state while the others did not. He believed that people, rather than living in excess, would devote their excess profits as capital, reinvesting it so as to produce... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
