Intelligence Analysis & Cognitive Biases: an Illustrative Case StudyPierre Memheld
This case study is foremost an educational tool. It involves two European and Asian multinational tires manufacturer for OTR, Off the Road, or “off road” and a problem of price competition. It shows how an initial intelligence effort is led astray. Instead the solution is a combination of approaches, better known as Competitive Intelligence. It is built on the external vision of the company craft, the use of all information sources characteristics of an intelligence field dedicated to the business world. It is not a new discipline but a trans-disciplinary approach for information exploitation which is using elements from financial analysis, SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) matrixes, and value chain analysis. In the above case, the company Eurotires used mostly the following sources: internet, scientific and patent databases; public administrative sources; customers interviews, industrial experts (manufacturing and distribution), and marketing analysis.

A big thank you for all the interest in this study guide. It was originally created as a fun introduction that took the Cognitive Bias wiki and tried to make it easier to memorize.
However, the authors of the wiki article have expressed some concern over the accuracy of certain entries. The document was taken down until that could be corrected.
But, people started asking that I release a new version with a warning. In response, a new "Beta version" of the document has been uploaded with a very strong warning label up front and improved citations. I make it clear that all the text is based on an evolving wiki page and that some of the cognitive biases in there might be incorrect wiki entries. My hope is that this will continue to get people interested in pitching in to help fix the Cognitive Bias wiki pages. :) When the wiki is in a good place, I will take the document out of Beta, and will remove the warning label.

Ability to think deeper is one of the most valuable skills that every tester needs, and yet it is rarely taught in universities and even in workplaces. In today’s world, problems are becoming more complex with the addition of new technologies, tools and approaches. To deal with these challenges and remain competitive we should start to think about thinking and build a framework that helps us to face any testing challenges thoughtfully and require a new toolset or framework for thinking. At its core, it must be a framework that helps with problem-solving & provides a structure for our solutioning process. For this, learning and understanding how to spot gaps in our thinking process play a significant role.
As explained by Daniel Kahneman in the book “Thinking, Fast and Slow”, our brains have two thinking systems, ‘System 1’ which is faster and intuitive and the slower and contemplative ‘System 2’. The interaction of the two systems often helps us to get things right or fail at times. Understanding the way we use these systems to think helps us in better decision making and problem-solving. Connecting all the dots around thinking, I have figured out some hidden logics that we still need to explore and analyse. • A heuristic, is any approach to problem solving, learning, or discovery
that employs a practical methodology not guaranteed to be optimal
or perfect, but sufficient for the immediate goals.
• Where finding an optimal solution is impossible or impractical,
heuristic methods can be used to speed up the process of finding a
satisfactory solution. Heuristics can be mental shortcuts that ease the
cognitive load of making a decision.
• Examples of this method include using a rule of thumb, an educated
guess, an intuitive judgment, stereotyping, profiling, or common
sense.
12. Cognitive Bias
• A cognitive bias is a pattern of deviation in judgment, whereby
inferences about other people and situations may be drawn in an
illogical fashion.
• Individuals create their own "subjective social reality" from their
perception of the input. An individual's construction of social reality,
not the objective input, may dictate their behaviour in the social
world.
• Thus, cognitive biases may sometimes lead to perceptual distortion,
inaccurate judgment, illogical interpretation, or what is broadly called
irrationality.
