What is a resource
Resources are products or materials that humans use to survive and satisfy needs. Resources can be natural, coming directly from nature like water, air and sunlight, or man-made through human creation using natural resources as inputs, such as cars, clothing, tools and computers. Natural resources are extracted from nature and transformed by humans into man-made resources.
Errors and uncertainty
All physical measurements have an associated uncertainty that reflects errors involved. There are two types of errors - random errors which are out of the measurer's control and can be reduced through repeat readings, and systematic errors from instruments which can be reduced through calibration. The uncertainty is the smallest division on the instrument for systematic errors, and for random errors it can be determined from the range of repeat readings.
Accuracy and precision
Accuracy refers to how close a measurement is to the actual value and depends on the person measuring, while precision refers to how close repeated measurements are to each other and depends on the measuring tool. Accuracy and precision can both be demonstrated by shooting at a target, where accuracy is hitting the bullseye and precision is a tight grouping of shots close together, and being both accurate and precise is the ideal.
Hypothesis
A hypothesis is an educated guess that attempts to explain a phenomenon and should be testable, measurable, and contain an independent and dependent variable. To write a hypothesis, identify the independent and dependent variables in the experiment and phrase it as "If the independent variable is (changed), then the dependent variable will (change)." An example hypothesis is "If the amount of heat is decreased then germination will decrease."
Experiment: The flying straw
This document outlines a student research project to investigate variables that affect how far a straw flies when thrown. It provides instructions to conduct experiments testing variables like the size of paper attached to the straw or how the straw is thrown. Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
