This document discusses the roles of producers and consumers in ecosystems. Producers such as plants and algae are able to make their own food through photosynthesis. Consumers obtain energy by consuming other organisms and are divided into primary, secondary, and tertiary consumers depending on what they eat. Consumers are further classified as predators that hunt living prey, scavengers that eat dead bodies, or parasites that feed on living hosts without killing them.
