Faces, facts & maps Since 2002 iT4Communities have gathered a community of over 8,000 IT professionals wishing to volunteer They represent most of the UK They have many different skills My job is to ensure we have enough interesting projects for them to work on to fulfil their desire to help charities get the IT they need to run effectively & effeciently
The charities, not for profits (social enterprises) & community & voluntary groups we have asking for help from volunteers are mainly relatively small charities providing support to the most vulnerable in our society but we have a huge range. Some examples are the large Radar, now Disability Rights UK Connexions – large UK wide young people’s charity Pants to Poverty – a fair trade social enterprise that sells underwear that is ethically made & whose profits go to projects that combat poverty
All projects that we ask volunteers to work on are for UK organisations and most deliver their work in the UK. The highest percentage of projects are websites & databases. We also get asked for networking advice, strategy & some general advice & guidance. Increasingly social media & cloud computing questions get asked. This one is unusal but worth noting – an iT4C volutneer Vincent went to Kenya to set up a classroom of computers. Currently we have a similar project in Westminster libraries, less warm but no less valuable.
And this perhaps the other end of the extreme – a large strategic project, helping a charity procure & implement the right technical infrastructure during a merge of organisations
Every year since our inception (I think!) we have recognised the value of all pro bono IT volutneering with an Award ceremony. Since we joined AbilityNet we encouraged them to continue this and this has become the much larger ‘Technology for Good’ Awards, hosted by BT and compared by Mariella Frostrup. This year the Awards were held on Friday 6 July and with over 200 entries across 8 categories it was a wonderful celebration.
