9. “I came to the class a novice, could not even turn a computer on. The
class was very useful, I learnt a lot and since then I have bought my
own computer. I learnt how to e-mail, I constantly e-mail my family
and in fact found out via e-mail this morning that my daughter will
be carrying the Olympic Torch. The hand-outs were good, if I get
stuck now I can refer to them. The tutor was very good, would
recommend the classes to everyone.”
“I found the course very useful and easy to understand, hand-outs
were given for each week which I can now refer to. I have bought my
own computer and I am now online and I enjoy internet shopping,
M&S being my favourite. I am now able to e-mail friends and family,
which makes it cheaper & quicker than the telephone or the post.”

12. “Best computer class I have
attended”
“My daughter has moved to live in
Scotland and now that I have learnt
how to e-mail, I can keep in touch
with her daily”
13. Volunteer
“I volunteered with Age Cymru Ceredigion to enhance my CV
prior to going to Cardiff university. I didn’t realise that I
would enjoy the weekly sessions so much. I was teamed up
with Mary, who was 86. We built up a such a good
friendship. I didn’t have any grandparents and no older
people in my life. I looked forward to our weekly chats and
her funny quips and jokes. I learnt so much from her. I am
now a qualified radiographer and am so glad I met Mary –
Everyone should know a Mary in their lives.”
14. Volunteer
“It is good to see how people progress over
the weeks as they gain confidence in their
own ability to use computers and the internet
and to share their newly acquired knowledge
to help others”.

Editor's Notes
Many older people cannot afford a computer or don’t have access to an internet connection. This is at a time when more public services are going online as businesses and local authorities make efficiency savings.
This is a statement from one of our clients before she started our classes,
So many times you just want to throw it all away –But with the help of a volunteer……………….
Recruiting volunteers.Older people – particularly retired professionalsUniversity students – Aberystwyth UniversityAlso we have strong links with local schools – a picture here shows 9/10 year olds – we asked older people to bring along their cawl recipes. Older people compiled a recipe book with help from the children. Children chose their favourite & they were invited back on St David’s day to taste the winning cawl recipe. In kind volunteer time(5 volunteers working approx. 1.5 hours per week @ £7.50 hour for one year = £2450.00)Funding for staff time continues to be a barrier to delivering IT projects for older people. Even though projects are volunteer led, staff need to manage the project, recruit volunteers, follow an induction programme, risk assess & plan, advertise, design leaflets, give talks to local groups, report at meetings and source future funding opportunities. We have investors in volunteers status – so we have a clear role description for our IT volunteers. All our volunteers are CRB checked.
