Helen Keller Accomplishments
At the age of 19 months Helen became sick and lost her sight and hearing. When she started to grow
up it was difficult for her because she had no way to communicate. She threw many tantrums to
express herself. But then came along Anne Sullivan who taught Helen sign language and her how
world opened up from there. She went on to do great things. From her achievements and speeches
toward the disabled community. Helen Keller made a lasting impact on the world. Another thing to
look up too is the fact that she learned so much in so little time. Helen was able to learn how to read
braille and write in English, Latin, French, Italian, Greek, and German. Also Helen was able to
utilize on a Braille writer and a typewriter. Along with all that she found a teacher, Sarah Fuller, to
teach her how to speak (Marlow 236). Keller was able to accomplish this in only a couple of year.
She was a remarkable woman. Helen Keller was only able to accomplish this because of her
unwavering determination. Helen Keller made many great accomplishments in the time she was
alive. That many children and adults will look up too. One accomplishment is going to Radcliffe
college. This specific college was the woman's division at Harvard University (Marlow 236). Even
with her challenges, she went to college with women who had no physical disabilities like hers. She
was in regular classes; going at the same pace as everyone else. Helen did not just go to college; she
thrived in college. She graduated with

Assignment 1 : Free Speech During Wartime
Assignment 1: Free Speech During Wartime
Throughout history we have seen how the government can censor the media during a time of war, in
despite of the first amendment. We are entitled to our voices and opinions and by censoring what the
media and citizens feel, not allowing them to express their concerns or ideas or concepts is an
atrocity. The government decides if we enter a war not the citizens. Are we are never allowed to
speak out against a war? Does this mean we are unpatriotic or unamerican? During the Civil War,
the military often kept reporters off the battlefields. Years later, the U.S. entered the First World War
and took control of all radio communications and censored all photographs. Congress then passed
the Espionage and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This law prohibited any speech that interfered with the drafting of men into the armed forces. The
media is forced to silence, due to the fear of any repercussions, from the government. Merely
voicing an opinion in the media about any war is now so looked down upon that it takes away
freedom from the media to reach all types of audiences.
Assignment 3: The Press and Classified Documents As the Vietnam War dragged on, with more than
500,000 U.S. troops in Vietnam by 1968, military analyst Daniel Ellsberg, came to oppose the war,
and decided that the information contained in the Pentagon Papers should be available to the
American public. He photocopied the report and in March 1971 gave the copy to The New York
Times, which in return published the Pentagon Papers was the name given to a top–secret
Department of Defense study of U.S. political and military involvement in Vietnam from 1945 to
1967. The Nixon administration had Ellsberg indicted on criminal charges including conspiracy,
espionage and stealing government property. The trial began in 1973, but ended in a dismissal of the
charges after prosecutors discovered that a secret White House team burglarized Ellsberg's
psychiatrist's office to find information that would discredit him. Edward Snowden and the PRISM

The Death Of A Mr. Eugene V.
"Your Honor, years ago I recognized my kinship with all living beings, and I made up my mind that
I was not one bit better than the meanest on earth. I said then, and I say now, that while there is a
lower class, I am in it, and while there is a criminal element, I am of it, and while there is a soul in
prison, I am not free." yelled a Mr. Eugene V. Debs to the court before being sentence by the Judge.
It is 1918, the United States has entered the draining conflict of World War I, and on September 12th
of that same year a man named Eugene V. Debs is found culpable of ignoring the Sedition Act and
sentenced to 10 years in prison and is baffled for eternity. Following his sentencing, the addresses

He speaks with amazing discourse in his statement to the court because he applies ethos, logos, and

For a man being sentenced to prison in a court of law, one may think it hard to endeavor and
construct legitimacy, yet he pulls it off and displays Ethos every through howdy speech by his
insubordinate sentiments. He gives a first individual record of his life to permeate ethos into his
composed work, giving the group all the more appreciation of his reasoning and perspective. He
says: "Standing here this morning, I recall my boyhood. At fourteen I went to work in a railroad
shop; at sixteen I was firing a freight engine on a railroad. I remember all the hardships and
privations of that earlier day, and from that time until now my heart has been with the working class.
I could have been in Congress long ago. I have preferred to go to prison... "In a way he is using his
generosity, or staying with the unprivileged as Ethos. He similarly uses the advancement he is joined

The Red Scare : The Causes Of The Red Scare In Russia
The[a] Red Scare is alluded to as America's dread of socialism and American radicals. The first Red
Scare began in the 1920's, World War I had not gone exceptionally well for Russia and the weights
of losing the war constrained the Czar to leave. Russia expected to shape another administration and
in November of 1917, where Lenin drove the Bolshevik specialists insurgency to frame the socialist
party(Burnett 2000 ). Karl Marx's thoughts had been outstanding all through the world[b] since 1848
however had never been effectively actualized. The Western United forces needed to establish Czar
Nicholas back to control in Russia, however their endeavors were futile. The Bolsheviks had killed
the whole regal family, and had gradually taken control of the country(Burnett 2000).
In the United States, laborers who had before avoided from going on strike amid WWI were
currently requesting an expansion in their wages to stay aware of the steady increment of swelling.
There were more than 3,300 post war strikes which prompted the arrangement of the comrade work
party in 1919. Many American people believed that work activism was a hazard to society and ought
to be dispensed with. During this time period, there were many lawmakers who were against
Communism on American soil, one specifically was Woodrow Wilson's lawyer general Mitchell
Palmer. He was resolved to prevent a Bolshevik insurgency from occurring in America. Palmer felt

Muckraking Essay
There's an overwhelming number of sources for news to reach the public. There is Fox news, CNN,
BBC, NBC, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Propublica (a non–profit), and NPR, just
to name eight. All these news sources impact our daily lives as we make tough decisions on things
like who our president will be, what kind of food we eat or don't eat, or what kind of people we like
or don't like. Some journalism exposes things that other people don't want exposed. This type of
journalism is called Muckraking. Jessica Mitford, an investigative journalist, described muckraking
in her book, Poison Penmanship: The Art of Muckraking, as high honor in the world of journalism.
Muckraking must be disassociated with the term "bad journalism", it ... Show more content on

Other than the occasional muckraker whose journalism does not affect the public in a positive
manner, muckraking is a high honor in the world of journalism. Unfortunately, there is also a
negative to journalism and specifically journalism online. People will believe what they want to
whether it is true or not. Alex Jones': Infowars is a perfect example of this. This source of "news" is
quite frankly just ridiculous, even so, people will get sucked in and believe it because it's on the
internet and does talk about real events happening in the world, however it's a joke. It is dangerous
to have sources like Infowars because we tend to be more interested in these types of website and
we no longer recognize real reporting, the news that can actually impact our lives positively. People
such as John Spargo, one of the founders of the socialist party in America, are successful
muckrakers. Spargo lived in England but emigrated to America and brought with him a few socialist
members. He became a controversial figure in the socialist party after he wrote his books "The
Bitter Cry of Children" and "Underfed School Children" to expose the mistreatment of child
laborers. By exposing this issue of child labor to the world, Spargo led the United States into many
reforms on child labor and education,

Advantages Of The Gilded Age
Ever look at all the railroads and big manufacturing companies and think where could something so
big be started? Well the gilded age is highly responsible for these manufactures and creation of
railroads. The Gilded Age took place 1869–1901 in the United States giving a whole new
perspective, in 1877 to 1893 the economy nearly doubled. The Gilded Age took place in between
Civil War and the World War 1 where the US economy grew drastically resulting in lots of political
corruption. The Progressive Movement went along with the Gilded Age becoming popular among
the well educated and environmental friendly peers. Not everything was perfect during this time due
to many factors including unfair workers rights preventing many from obtaining a higher power then
one deserves. Fair workers rights was not only extinct during this time but many except a few
formers including Florence Kelley and Eugene V. Debs encouraged themselves to make a change for
the better. America before the Gilded Age wasn't an unsuccessful country but was far from its ...

With this comes many advantages and disadvantages towards the high and low class. Workers began
to be treated unfairly during these changes giving many high powered businessmen an idea to do the

choice but to accept their unfair rights and work. Immigrants and children becoming the vast
majority of the population means almost everyone was working, stated by the Liz Library how,

The History of the Canadian Political Landscape
The Canadian political landscape has a rich and complex history spanning from 'sea to sea', just as
the nation itself. Chronicles of dominance, leadership, and association by the United Kingdom,
France, and the United States has ultimately shaped the Canadian national consciousness, resulting
in the political ideologies and governance we see today. To best describe the characteristic of
Canadian politics, one can refer to 'Fragment Theory' where a colonial nation, such as Canada, is
predominantly influenced from their historic origins. However, recent immigration and economic
trends have drastically reshaped the Canadian political spectrum across provinces. The following
essay will briefly analyze the evolution of political ideologies across Canada, primarily focusing on
the conservative/ neo–liberal model.
To properly analyze the political ideologies that have played a major role in shaping Canadian
politics, one must examine a major aspect– regional politics. It is the various regions and provinces
that make up Canada, as does their political ideological landscape.
Perhaps the most influential of provinces in the development of political ideology in Canada is
Ontario. Since the formation of Canada, Ontario played a large role in the political sphere, hence
being home to the nations capital. Settled by British colonialist, and later on British loyalist from
America, Ontario was predominantly Anglo–Saxon, which favored traditional British principles
such as economic

Upton Sinclair 's The Jungle
The Jungle's purpose is to illustrate just what happens when the American Dream does not come
true. It is not for a lack of determination that its protagonist does not succeed with abundance –– nor
ethic or spirit; he merely falls victim to a system in which those at the top succeed with abundance
at the severe expense of those left with nothing at the bottom. The book's author, Upton Sinclair,
sought to show America the cost of its capitalist system. Born into a poor family with wealthy
relatives, Sinclair was aware of social and economic disparity in America from a young age (The
Jungle v). The Jungle is the result of Upton Sinclair working undercover for seven weeks in
Chicago's meatpacking industry in 1904, as well as the socialist ... Show more content on

These early moments of jubilee in the book provide a very effective contrast to the book's main
themes of human misery and powerlessness as the life of Jurgis falls apart piece by piece.
Following this wedding sequence the book catches its readers up on the status of Jurgis and the rest
during the six months prior. A man of strong build, it did not take long for Jurgis to find work in the
Chicago stockyards sweeping cow entrails into waste chutes on the killing floors of Brown's
slaughterhouse. The mechanics of the slaughterhouse are communicated with vivid detail – so much
so that it is no wonder they became the primary subject readers latched onto when the book
originally released. Among the most interesting slaughterhouse descriptions which Sinclair provides
is that of the concept of "speeding up", in which workers in certain positions at the slaughterhouse
are trained and paid more to work faster in order to set the pace of the slaughterhouse's disassembly
machine and achieve a higher output. This exemplifies one of Sinclair's issues with capitalism. In a
capitalist society, the poor are kept in need, which makes them exploitable. Because there were
many unemployed people looking for work at the stockyards at any given time, not performing at
the dangerous pace set by others often meant giving up your job to someone more capable of or

Helen Keller Goals
Since Helen Keller's early years in life she has always been blind, deaf and mute. Members in her
family knew there was sure to be many difficulties in teaching her basic life routines, and from
where the family stood there was no way to teach her. Helen sometimes got so frustrated she would
lash out. Until one day her family, with hopes to teach her, hired someone with experience to help.
The teacher's name is Annie Sullivan. Sullivan had some difficulties getting through to Helen, but
once she did there was no stopping Helen Keller from learning. Little after that everyone knew
Helen was destined for greatness, she started school and then succeeded to move on to college. She
rose to her educational heights and continued to rise up in the world. Despite Helen Keller's
setbacks, during her lifetime she accomplished great things that few people, who have the privilege
to see, hear and speak, can achieve. From a young age Helen Keller attended many schools and even
college, she succeeded at each school while still managing and overcoming any setbacks with her
disability. Helen first began school classes at the Perkins Institute. The director of Perkins Michael
Anagnos and the well known Alexander Graham Bell, both saw great potential in Helen Keller from
the beginning of her life. Though Keller was making progress and having letters published at the
Perkins Institute, a misunderstanding incident resulted in Helen Keller leaving Perkins. (Helen

Socialist Political Parties
The Republican and Democratic parties are politically supportive of their own causes and class
interests, which, with consistency, has remained the endorsement of the capitalist class. Both sides
show equal opposition to the ideals of socialism. Because of this, capitalist are reluctant to allow the
emancipation of people in the working class from wage slavery, and fear any man that may be
intelligent enough to question the class struggle among the wage workers and the proprietors.
However, the fervor that kindles interest in socialist politics, as is almost always the circumstance
for the foundation of a social insurgency, is the observation that the economic system in America
slants profoundly in favor of owners and against workers. In addition ... Show more content on

In his proclamation on Socialism Debs states, "The end of class struggle and class rule, of master
and slave, of ignorance and vice, of poverty and shame, of cruelty and crime–the birth of freedom,
the dawn of brotherhood, the beginning of MAN. That is the demand. This is socialism."(Bicknell,
390). With capitalism needing to be overthrown and removed from the thoughts of the working
class, a rebellion from the socialists will provide recognition to the struggles created amongst wage
earners versus their employers. Acknowledging the disparity and management of the workers forces
an economic freedom given to those imprisoned by impoverished wages. Keep in mind though;
Debs does not desire to go to war with men only the beliefs and attitudes that these men hold. In an
article in the International Socialist Review, Debs wrote, "I am not a capitalist soldier; I am a
proletarian revolutionist.... I am opposed to every war but one; I am for that war with heart and soul,
and this the world–wide war of the social revolution." Now, the Socialist Party has promised the
people they will abolish capitalism, class rule, and free the working class from wage slavery, with

Unions Essay
Michael Paul 099 66 3949 History 316z Trade unionism, industrial unionism, and socialism were
the main forms of organized labor in the late nineteenth century early twentieth century, yet rarely
did these shifting currents flow in complementary ways that might appeal to the vast majority of
struggling workers. The three most important formal organizations were the American Federation of
Labor (AFL), the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and the Socialist Party of America. All
three of these organizations had there own strengths but the many weaknesses and divisions
combined with outside influences caused the retardation of their radical, left wing ideas. The

The cost of which was not felt by the middle class but by the unskilled worker (Cashman,223.) The
exclusion of the unskilled worker and the lack of a true effort to recruit women and blacks into the
AFL as well as having a central body that was powerless to settle disputes between unions along
with the elitest and often racist slant of some union policies were major flaws of the AFL . Samuel
Gompers himself was anti immigration. Though women and blacks were urged to join the union
they were met with harsh prejudices from the white members of the AFL. In 1902, blacks
constituted only three percent of total union membership and mostly segregated into ineffectual
locals. The AFL's record with women was almost as poor. High union dues, apprenticeship
requirements and the autonomous structures of individual unions meant that few women entered
craft unions. Indeed, the more women went to work, the more they aroused the anxieties of
workmen who considered it their birthright to be the sole support of the household (Laurie,196.)
This contributed to more prejudices against women and keeping their numbers down in the AFL.
The unskilled and immigrant workers were the worst off in the AFL. Unskilled immigrant labor was
regarded by most union leaders as undesirable and unorganizable. The AFL was a leading advocate
for immigration restriction on both economic and nativist grounds. This outlook deepens our

Comparison Of Political Parties
"America is in the midst of tunnel vision" With all the political parties in the mix today it can be
confusing to an average citizen who works daily to feed the family and pay the bills. You have
Democrats and Republicans today that used to be light years apart and today they are shadows of
one another. Many feel the Libertarian and Independent parties are not strong enough to carry the
load in government. There are words such as conservative, socialist, progressive and liberal that are
thrown about like the wind. For example their are similarities to the progressive party and the

The conservatives are generally and not always part of the republican party. These parties have
changed so much since their inception. And with all the negative feelings of each party towards one
another we are giving rise to the "Roman Empire Theory" where America is seen in similarities to
the old Roman Empire that collapsed upon itself. Here are some examples of the connections: First,
the huge cost of elections today have spiralled out of control costing billions of dollars. This is
creating the appearance that our leaders are puppets of specail interest groups. In the Roman
Empire, towards the end the elections were costing staggering amounts and causing terrible results.
Thus, weakening the system. Second, in the late Roman Empire the road to wealth was seen as
being in the political arena. The Roman leaders would accumulate great amounts of personal wealth.
Today the very same thing is happening across America with those who want to become very
wealthy get into the politics and seek a seat either in Congress or the Presidency. Third, as the
Roman Empire spiralled down there were wars and a national state of security arose. The same can
be said for America as in the last century we have had several wars and now the security of the
nation is being challenged. Fourth, during the last years of the Roman Empire the leaders were given
wealth from other nations to buy their influence to help them in return. The same is happening in
America today as foreign powers send huge sums of money to our various leaders to gain their
favor. Fifth, the Romans in their last years made huge profits from their business in foreign
countries. In America today, many large corporations have there manufacturing plants in other
nations and reaping higher dividends. And Lastly, in the last days of the Roman Empire the middle

workers and saw their consistent oppression by their capitalist employers. Despite this he was
dedicated to maintaining a union comprised of sober outstanding laborers who could best serve their
employers. By 1879 he was elected grand secretary of the BLF and editor of the magazine. In this
role he gained crucial experience in labor organizing on a larger scale and elevated his status as a
effective leader in the labor movement. During this time he saw consistent wage cuts forced on these

were not interested in the quality of labor of their employees. Instead they were interested in only
creating a profit for themselves at any cost and reducing the value of a man to his work.

The Progressive Era in America lasted from the 1890's to the 1920's. During this time, The United
States underwent several changed, or reforms. These reforms helped to shape our nation into what it
is today. There are 10 reforms I'm going to discuss in this essay including the reforms on civil rights,
conservation, government reform, health and medicine, labor reform, radical trade unionism,
socialism, temperance, trust busting, and women's rights. The Civil Rights reform was perhaps one
of the most important reforms and had since been expanded upon greatly. During this time slavery

alcohol. So, they banned the manufacture, transportation, and selling of alcohol. This never really

Bootlegging by definition is the making, selling, or distribution of illicit products such as liquor

He was still active as grand secretary of the BLF at this time and engaged in the national debate
regarding the need for a larger all encompassing railway union in place of smaller ones to advance
the needs of railway workers. He believed a larger national union would be much more effective in
this role. Salvatore argues that at this time Debs' even began to form the idea of a all encompassing
union for all laborers nationwide at this time. He retired from his role in the BLF in 1891 and
organized the first national industrial union in the United States in 1893, the American Railway

The Role Of Socialism In Upton Sinclair's The Jungle
Upton Sinclair's novel, The Jungle, portrays the plight of immigrants in the meatpacking district of
Chicago. The idealistic American Dream seems to be that of a fiction novel as Jurgis Rudkas loses
his way in the corrupt streets of Chicago. Although, Upton Sinclair reveals that it is not the fault in
America, but the faults of capitalism that is the source of pain for immigrants. The Jungle, in nature
depicts the harsh realities of immigrant life, however it is fictional in that Upton Sinclair shapes the
outcome of the novel and where the blame should be placed for the horrific events of Jurgis Rudkas
new life. Consistently Upton Sinclair uses socialism as the quintessential answer to the survival of
the fittest economy of the United States. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The forceful and persuasive nature of the novel is very compelling to sympathize with immigrants
when typically they are seen as less for not being American. This momentum would last him some
time, however he would not achieve the same success as a writer again. Simply, The Jungle is
irreplaceable in its effect on American society; informing the people to the conditions of immigrant
workers, the ideals of socialism, and the unsanitary meat in the factories. This was achieved through
the description of the winters, the tragic loses, the deconstruction of capitalism, the blame for
turmoil, and Jurgis Rudkas new life purpose through the socialist party. Seen throughout the novel,
Upton Sinclair's bias makes the novel truly unique and contributes to its success, even if it was not
the success he desired. He would continue to write several novels, most of which use the same
rhetoric in favor of socialism. As for Sinclair, he believed the socialist party was not just a happy
ending to a political fiction novel, but could be the answer to the plight of immigrants and those
suffering under capitalism. The Jungle outlines the harsh realities of life and the toll it takes until the
enlightenment brought by socialism. Though socialism is not as popular today, the ending of the
novel would bring any reader relief in that, at least for one immigrant, the suffering might end and
that all the suffering had a purpose. Socialism was the answer for Upton Sinclair, Jurgis Rudkas, and
other Americans, however, it was never the answer for

The Causes Of The Cold War
The Cold War was an important phase in the history of international relations. In accordance with
one of the etymological theories, the term "Cold War" was coined by a Spanish medieval writer Juan
Manuel in the 14th century. However, he could not predict that the Cold War era would have largely
affected the region, which was hugely influenced by his future descendants of Hispanic origin. The
Cold War was an indirect confrontation between the two superpowers – the United States of
America and the Soviet Union in the period of 1945 to 1991. Moreover, it was a struggle between
two world systems: liberal capitalism and communism. The conflict never escalated into a direct war
between the superpowers but both countries have been involved in numerous proxy wars throughout
the globe. In Latin America, as in other Third World regions (Africa and Asia) the Cold War was
occasionally very hot.
In this paper, I will argue that the nature of Latin American socialist movement significantly varied.
Some movements were truly socialist and communist, notwithstanding, some of the revolutionary
forces have manipulated the Cold War rhetoric in their national interests. Moreover, I will analyze
the relationship of those movements with the USSR, which, from case to case, had its distinguish
features. My essay will be structured in the following way. The first section will be devoted to the
causes of Soviet involvement in Latin America and the USSR's strategies disposable in the region.

Contribution Of The Life Of Helen Keller
Balyan 01
Introduction
Helen Adams Keller was an American author, political activist and a lecturer. She was the first deaf–
blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. The story of how Keller's teacher, Anne Sullivan,
broke through the isolation imposed by a near complete lack of language, allowing to blossom into
the exemplary system of bravery, has been widely shown and known through the dramatizations of
the play and film, The miracle worker. She was born in west Tuscumbia, Alabama on June 27, 1880
which is now commemorated as Helen Keller day in the state of Pennsylvania.
Apart from being a very prolific writer, Keller was also a person a strong sense of conviction. A
member of the socialist party of America and the industrial workers if the world, she rallied and
campaigned for causes such as women's suffrage, labor right, socialism, anti–militarism, and other
similar causes. She was inducted into the Alabama women's hall of fame in 1971 and was one of the

How Did The Socialist Party Influence Social Reform?
During the late 1800s and early 1900s, the socialist movement was destined to hold collective
control of the modern economy. Socialism, in popular definition is the political movement to replace
the profit motive and private ownership of productive property (Schneirov 2003). In 1901, the
Socialist Party of America was born in order to meet these goals. The primary purpose of the party
was to eradicate capitalism over time and to develop political reform (ency). Although the Socialist
Party of America did not have the impact that the Democratic and Republican parties had, it is still
regarded as having great influence on reform. This paper will focus on the background of the party,

The labor movement grew out of the need to protect the common interest of employees. For
example, according to Seidler (1961) "They pushed for social and humanitarian causes such as, old
age pensions, natural resource conservation, government aid to the unemployed and disarmament"
(210). These were many issues that were not being targeted by other parties during that timeframe.
However, Persuading americans to join the american labor movement or even vote for it was
constantly rejected. Due to the lack of influence in American politics, it was surprising how much of
an influence the Socialist party contributed to the labor movement. For instance Seidler (1961)
states "The impact of the Socialist Party on the American labor movement goes far beyond the fact
that some labor leaders of great national prominence have been significantly affected by it" (211).

Eugene Victor Debs Research Paper
It seems our country has always had a want for radicals who are captivating, and so it would us do
well to recall the likes of Eugene Victor Debs. Debs was what every socialist or revolutionary or
activist should be: intense in his principles, as well as sympathetic and compassionate in his
personal relations. Debs looked at the working–class struggle not as a scholar, but instead as one
who was directly entangled–he provided assistance by giving a voice to the great effort, or as he told
an assembly of Philadelphia workers, "I look into your faces. I catch your spirit. I am simply the
tongue of the working class, making this appeal from the working class." Debs was clear about
which war he was equipped to fight: "I am not a capitalist soldier; I am a proletarian revolutionist....

He embraced trade unionism gradually, and Socialism with even greater hesitation. As an organizer
for the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen in the 1870's, Debs preached Christian moral
inspiration and opposed strikes as a threat to labor–management harmony. Before declaring himself
a Socialist in 1897, Debs went through various ideological incarnations, from Democratic Party
politician to free–silver Populist. Debs was a Socialist of a deeply practical bent, who deplored the
insurrectionary rhetoric of the Wobblies and helped build The Socialist Party. Debs linked the
struggle for the people do not wholly ignore industrial democracy of life. His devotion to the cause
was unquestionable, but what began to make Debs truly memorable was his giving nature, a passion
for identifying with the lost, the desperate, or underprivileged. He became known for simple Christ–
like acts of generosity, such as presenting clothes from his own valise to those in need, or making
impulsive gifts of money. 'While there is a lower class I am in it; while there is a criminal element I

easier and more interesting to read than many of the other chapters in the story. In this chapter, the
Jones' family lived in luxurious castle with butlers and servants unlike previous chapters where
Sinclair described the struggles of the factory workers. 3. Many critics believe this scene is written
to delight Sinclair's socialist friends. At the time it was written, readers would have easily
recognized that the butler is named after Alexander Hamilton, who was Secretary of the Treasury,
and that the dog is named after Admiral Dewey, who fought in the Spanish American War. Sinclair
and the other socialists would have considered these two men to be perpetrators of the capitalist
system, and ridiculing them in this scene would have been very amusing. Besides providing his
readers with an amusing scene, what does Sinclair reveal about the changes in Jurgis' character
during this chapter? During this chapter, Sinclair reveal that capitalism bought out the worst in

Radicle Perspectives in International Relations
Radical Theory of International Relations
Radical Theory derives its views from Marxist Theory. It is therefore sometimes referred to as
Marxism, Socialism or Socialists internationalism. Radicals believe that the state is nothing more
than a machine for the oppression of one class by another.
Although they consider the state to be an important actor in world affairs, they emphasize the
conflicting interests of social classes. Classes (capitalists, workers, and peasants), clash for control
of state policy within countries, and the government pursue not some overall national interest but the
interest of the dominant class. States are not unitary actors. Classes exist within societies but they
also span national boundaries. Capitalists ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

It would be safe to say that in a perfect world, Utopian Communities would be ideal. The Socialist
Party was fueled by the idea of Utopian Communities, in which communities possessed highly
desirable or perfect qualities. Is this a realistic concept? Most would say no; it is impossible to create
a perfect society, where there are no problems, as human nature does not allow this. People would
try to construct "utopies on earth" via ideologies such as communism. Communism, as we know, is
a political theory derived from Karl Marx, advocating class war and leading to a society in which all
property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs.
The Socialist Party would form strong alliances with a number of labor organizations, because of
their similar goals. In an attempt to rebel against the abuses of corporation workers, they believed
they had found a solution in a technique of collective bargaining. They banded together in "unions"

Social Darwinist Society During The Nineteenth Century
America established itself as a world power by the beginning of the twentieth century. The nation's
industrial sector remained the largest in the world, gasoline cars were introduced, telephones were
used, and cities were growing. Wealth could be attained, and was seen as a tangible goal. With the
many different theories and revolutions endured throughout the nineteenth century, it was certainly
an exciting time to be alive; but only if you were of Aryan race in the upper middle class. Social
Darwinism is a term and social theory formed in the late nineteenth century to describe the idea that
humans compete in a struggle for existence. This competition is also linked to Charles Darwin's
theory of natural selection, resulting in survival of the fittest. The misapplied social term of social
Darwinism is typically used in regards to the belief that wealthy Anglo–Saxon's are biologically
racially superior. Many people correlate the social Darwinist theory to the heightened rationalization
of imperialism, racism, and capitalism, and the term typically has a negative connotation due to the
vague understanding of it being attributed to a rejection of social responsibility and compassion.
Active Social Darwinist's believe that government should not aid or interfere with societal human
competition by attempting to regulate the economy or contributing to government funded programs.
The laissez–faire political idea is a direct reflection of a hands–off capitalist society.

Upton Sinclair: A Voice For Food Safety Essay
In 1906 Doubleday published a fiction novel based in reality and centered on immigrant life in the
Chicago meat packing district. "The Jungle," was written by Upton Sinclair, a 27 year old author
from Baltimore under a $500 advance from a socialist newspaper. This novel soon became a focus
of controversy and change within the United States. Though known more for it's horrific portrayal of
the conditions inside slaughterhouses, only 60 pages of the 413 pages that make up "The Jungle"
detail the goings–on of the meat packing industry.Sinclair's book was intended to be a political and
social commentary on the plight of the worker during the turn of the century. Oddly enough, the

Jurgis' father, Antanas is also betrayed by the American dream, and is only able to find a job if he
provides a kick–back of 33% of his wages to the man who found it for him. These types of issues
relating to characters finding "honest work" are a continuing central theme throughout the novel.
These hardships only seem to intensify as winter brings illness to the family. Jurgis is becoming
increasingly aware of the corruption of the management of Packingtown and finally joins a union
after a long period holding out. His contacts within the union persuade him to learn to speak
English, become an American citizen, and vote in elections. This introduction into politics will not
become a major theme until much later in the novel, but will eventually become the central focus of
Sinclair's work. Towards this point in the novel, the horror stories of the packing plants begin to
unfold. Particular revulsions that occur within the fertilizer plant are retold ad infinitum during later
events that transpire as a result of the novel. One such tale is that of the worker that falls into the
machines. Since he is unable to be rescued, he becomes part of the product. The tales that surface in
the novel only bring Jurgis to further become leery of the corruption and dishonesty that exist within
the industry. As the story progresses, more and

What Is Democratic Socialism?
What Is Democratic Socialism?
Democratic Socialists believe that the economy and society should be run democratically – to meet
the needs of the whole community, not to make profits for a few. To achieve a more just society,
many structures of our government and economy must be trasnsformed to through greater economic
and social democracy so that ordinary Americans can participate in the decisions that affect our
lives.
Democracy and socialism go hand in hand. All over the world, wherever the idea of democracy has

It is through the struggles of working people, women, and people of color that vital democratic
reforms such as the forty–hour week, increases in the minimum wage, unemployment insurance, and
Social Security have been won. Much, however, remains to be done before people take control over
their own destinies, and before our wealth is used to ensure that everyone has access to such basic
necessities as food, housing, education, and health care.
Other countries show us that you can strive for both prosperity and social justice. We must do better.
Why are there no models of democratic socialism?
Although no country has fully instituted democratic socialism, the democratic socialist, social
democratic, and labor movements of other countries have won many victories we can learn from.
We can learn from the comprehensive welfare state maintained by the Swedes, from Canada's
national health care system, France's nationwide child care program, or Nicaragua's literacy
programs. Lastly, we can learn from efforts initiated right here in the U.S., such as the community
health centers created by the government in the 1960s. They provided high quality family care, with
community involvement in decision–making.
But hasn't the European Social Democratic experiment failed?
For over half a decade, Western Europe have enjoyed both tremendous prosperity and economic

Socialism in The Jungle Essay
Socialism in The Jungle
The Rudkus family arrived from Lithuania to find Chicago as "a city in which justice and honor,
women's bodies and men's souls, were for sale in the marketplace, and human beings writhed and
fought and fell upon each other like wolves in the pit, in which lusts were raging fires, and men
were fuel, and humanity was festering and stewing and wallowing in its own corruption." (Pg.165)
The city, during the time span of the novel, was truly a jungle–like society in which Upton Sinclair
found much fault and great room for improvement. Sinclair perceived the problem in American
society to be the reign of capitalism. In The Jungle, he presented the reader with the Rudkus family;

Courts at this time were solidly pro–business, and not receptive to worker's claims of employer
responsibility for workplace accidents. Jurgis and his family were faced with many predicaments

Packingtown, Jurgis found work quickly in the meat packing industry because of his strong, young
stature. As the years went by, however, and he grew plagued with injuries and financial troubles,
Jurgis found work to be evermore difficult to obtain and hold. The social system cracked down on
the family and offered nowhere for the Rudkus' to turn for help.
Not only did the family stumble upon difficulties in their workplaces, but in basic living conditions
as well. Jurgis and his family witnessed such atrocities, as baby Antanas tragically drowning in the
unpaved roads, devastating financial loss through misinformation concerning the purchase and
custody of their house, and unsanitary meat packed and sold for regular consumption.
Such incredible pandemonium was involved with virtually all of the Rudkus family's daily activities

family members to radical attempts at survival and hope for some means of liberation from their

The Irony of The Jungle
Between 1870 and 1900 Chicago grew from a population of 299,000 to almost 1.7 million, the
fastest–growing city ever at the time. This surge in population was largely attributed to immigrants
coming from European countries seeking a chance for employment and new freedoms associated
with moving to the United States at the time. 1905, in particular, was a historic year when a surge of
over 1 million immigrants came to the city. During this time, author Upton Sinclair was working
undercover, investigating working conditions in the city's meatpacking district. Sinclair's research

Although the injury was caused by leaping out of the way from out–of–control cattle, the company
declares Jurgis' injury to be his own fault. Forced to rest at home with no means to earn money
while other strong–bodied men replace him, the bank eventually forecloses on his home, only to
resell to another eager family that shared Jurgis' optimism. Realizing this truth, Jurgis' father
Anatanas is just as resolute to help provide for the family. He takes up a job in a pickling–basement
with poor air quality and contact with poisonous chemicals, which ultimately leads to his death.
Lack of sympathy is a common theme which helps Sinclair paint the picture of an unforgiving
environment, where people come and go, processed much like cattle. Sinclair's title is appropriate
given the ways people are treated when an accident happens. Similar tragic fates befall the rest of
Jurgis' extended family that enter work in the meatpacking district. Realizing their home will be

"Kangaroo" wing of the older Socialist Labor Party. These parties contained mostly immigrant

Michael Harrington. This book took great favor within the Socialist
Party. The left wing Socialists were beginning to die out and in 1968 the right wing Socialists held

the control of the right wing Socialists and in 1982 the party was renamed the Democratic Socialists
of America. The only state to have a
Socialist ballot is the Socialist Party of Oregon, which formed in 1994.
This is how it remains today.
In the beginning I read Upton Sinclair's novel The Jungle in order to gain entrance into the
Advanced Placement English class. The things I learned about Socialism, the meat–packing industry
and
Sinclair's own views lead me to discover a new era of writers I didn't know existed. These writers

Many of these authors such as Upton Sinclair, Jack London, Ida Tarbell and many others took a

Socialism: Ideology In The United States
SOHEYL HAMZAVI
POLSC–120, A. ARAIM

SOCIALISM Socialism is not an ideology that most people in the United States discuss often, but
why is that? It is sometimes regarded as a "dirty" word to most, as it has distant similarities to the
form of government that Joseph Stalin ruled his nation as, Communism; one of the very forms of
governments our nation fought against. We as a people try to distant ourselves from Socialism
because we are afraid that it will eventually lead to a similar transformation that Russia had when it
became the USSR. The reason for that, I believe, is because people aren't educated enough about the
topic itself, therefore leading them to stray away into their comfort of living in a nation led by
Capitalism. In order ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It started out by having two branches of socialism; those being "utopian" and "revolutionary"
socialism. Utopian socialism was associated to Comte de Saint Simon and Charles Fourier, who
were both against revolutionary action after seeing the carnage of the French Revolution. The other
French socialists were the revolutionaries. The most important of these revolutionaries was Louis
Auguste Blanqui, and he associated a lot of his terms with Communism. Like the utopians, he
criticized Capitalism but he believed that it could only be overthrown through violent revolution by
the working classes. In the last third of the 19th century in Europe social democratic parties arose in
Europe drawing mainly from Marxism. By 1968, the Vietnam War created the New Left, socialists
who tended to be critical of the Soviet Union and social democracy. Some elements of the New Left
and others favored decentralized collective ownership in the form of cooperatives or workers'
councils. In Latin America, Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez coined the term 'Socialism of the
21st Century', which included a policy of nationalization of national assets such as oil, anti–
imperialism, etc. By 1842, socialism became the topic of a major academic analysis by a German

The Jungle as Socialist Propaganda   In the world of economic competition that we live in

Some believe that Capitalism is the cause for much of the poverty in the nation today, but any
hardcore capitalist will tell you that capitalism inherited poverty, and far from being a cause of
poverty, it is the only solution.   However, believers in socialism would completely disagree
with this ideal. Socialism is the economic system in which the workers, instead of a rich minority of
entrepreneurs, own all industry. Workers receive the full fruits of their labors instead of being given
miniscule compensation for backbreaking labor. Since the people are paid well for their work, work
becomes a cooperative entity where people come to rely on one another and people actually are
more inclined to do their fair share to help the advancement of society as a whole.   In order
to discuss these issues as they are pertinent to this story, a general summary of the story must first be
given. The story revolves around the life and family of Jurgis Rudkus, a Lithuanian immigrant who

Review Of Upton Sinclair's The Jungle
The Jungle by Upton Sinclair
Upton Sinclair was an American writer whose works reverts not only the inside but also the
socialists view on things. Upton Sinclair was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He was born into a
family which held to its Southern aristocracy in everything that was done. When Sinclair was ten
years old, the family packed up and moved to New York City as there were more opportunities to
succeed. The Jungle is both a judgment on and a profit of its own times. Those times most precise

An enlarging number of immigrants confabulate political, cultural and economic intimidation to the
predominance of native– born middle and upper– class Americans. As a result, the nonimmigrant
Americans kept pressure on the police to clasp down on the urban crimes, especially crime related to
unsavory aspects of the so called "foreign" community lifestyle like the utilization of alcohol. Many
conflict theories during the 1900's were related to the percent of foreign born and arrested rate of
drinkers under numerous controls suggested by criminological researches. Because the urban
politics was a period whirled around battles between city bosses and propagandist, the incorporate
political variables were scrutinized. It resulted in supporting political judgment of the antagonism,
with which urban police made arrests for alcoholism. "The 1890s were years of intense labor

Assignment 1 : Free Speech During Wartime Assignment 1: Free Speech During Wartime Throughout history we have seen how the government can censor the media during a time of war, in despite of the first amendment. We are entitled to our voices and opinions and by censoring what the media and citizens feel, not allowing them to express their concerns or ideas or concepts is an atrocity. The government decides if we enter a war not the citizens. Are we are never allowed to speak out against a war? Does this mean we are unpatriotic or unamerican? Years later, the U.S. entered the First World War and took control of all radio communications and censored all photographs. Congress then passed the Espionage and ... Assignment 3: The Press and Classified Documents As the Vietnam War dragged on, with more than 500,000 U.S. troops in Vietnam by 1968, military analyst Daniel Ellsberg, came to oppose the war, and decided that the information contained in the Pentagon Papers should be available to the American public. The Nixon administration had Ellsberg indicted on criminal charges including conspiracy, espionage and stealing government property. The trial began in 1973, but ended in a dismissal of the charges after prosecutors discovered that a secret White House team burglarized Ellsberg's psychiatrist's office to find information that would discredit him. There is Fox news, CNN, BBC, NBC, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Propublica (a non–profit), and NPR, just to name eight. All these news sources impact our daily lives as we make tough decisions on things like who our president will be, what kind of food we eat or don't eat, or what kind of people we like or don't like. Some journalism exposes things that other people don't want exposed. This type of journalism is called Muckraking. Other than the occasional muckraker whose journalism does not affect the public in a positive manner, muckraking is a high honor in the world of journalism. Unfortunately, there is also a negative to journalism and specifically journalism online. People will believe what they want to whether it is true or not. Alex Jones': Infowars is a perfect example of this. This source of "news" is quite frankly just ridiculous, even so, people will get sucked in and believe it because it's on the internet and does talk about real events happening in the world, however it's a joke. Spargo lived in England but emigrated to America and brought with him a few socialist members. He became a controversial figure in the socialist party after he wrote his books "The Bitter Cry of Children" and "Underfed School Children" to expose the mistreatment of child laborers. • 7. The History of the Canadian Political Landscape The Canadian political landscape has a rich and complex history spanning from 'sea to sea', just as the nation itself. Chronicles of dominance, leadership, and association by the United Kingdom, France, and the United States has ultimately shaped the Canadian national consciousness, resulting in the political ideologies and governance we see today. To best describe the characteristic of Canadian politics, one can refer to 'Fragment Theory' where a colonial nation, such as Canada, is predominantly influenced from their historic origins. However, recent immigration and economic trends have drastically reshaped the Canadian political spectrum across provinces. The following essay will briefly analyze the evolution of political ideologies across Canada, primarily focusing on the conservative/ neo–liberal model. To properly analyze the political ideologies that have played a major role in shaping Canadian politics, one must examine a major aspect– regional politics. It is the various regions and provinces that make up Canada, as does their political ideological landscape. Perhaps the most influential of provinces in the development of political ideology in Canada is Ontario. Since the formation of Canada, Ontario played a large role in the political sphere, hence being home to the nations capital. Settled by British colonialist, and later on British loyalist from America, Ontario was predominantly Anglo–Saxon, which favored traditional British principles such as economic ... It is not for a lack of determination that its protagonist does not succeed with abundance –– nor ethic or spirit; he merely falls victim to a system in which those at the top succeed with abundance at the severe expense of those left with nothing at the bottom. The book's author, Upton Sinclair, sought to show America the cost of its capitalist system. Born into a poor family with wealthy relatives, Sinclair was aware of social and economic disparity in America from a young age (The Jungle v). These early moments of jubilee in the book provide a very effective contrast to the book's main themes of human misery and powerlessness as the life of Jurgis falls apart piece by piece. Following this wedding sequence the book catches its readers up on the status of Jurgis and the rest during the six months prior. A man of strong build, it did not take long for Jurgis to find work in the Chicago stockyards sweeping cow entrails into waste chutes on the killing floors of Brown's slaughterhouse. The mechanics of the slaughterhouse are communicated with vivid detail – so much so that it is no wonder they became the primary subject readers latched onto when the book originally released. Among the most interesting slaughterhouse descriptions which Sinclair provides is that of the concept of "speeding up", in which workers in certain positions at the slaughterhouse are trained and paid more to work faster in order to set the pace of the slaughterhouse's disassembly machine and achieve a higher output. This exemplifies one of Sinclair's issues with capitalism. In a capitalist society, the poor are kept in need, which makes them exploitable. Because there were many unemployed people looking for work at the stockyards at any given time, not performing at the dangerous pace set by others often meant giving up your job to someone more capable of or willing to ... • 9. Helen Keller Goals Since Helen Keller's early years in life she has always been blind, deaf and mute. Members in her family knew there was sure to be many difficulties in teaching her basic life routines, and from where the family stood there was no way to teach her. Helen sometimes got so frustrated she would lash out. Until one day her family, with hopes to teach her, hired someone with experience to help. The teacher's name is Annie Sullivan. Sullivan had some difficulties getting through to Helen, but once she did there was no stopping Helen Keller from learning. Little after that everyone knew Helen was destined for greatness, she started school and then succeeded to move on to college. She rose to her educational heights and continued to rise up in the world. Despite Helen Keller's setbacks, during her lifetime she accomplished great things that few people, who have the privilege to see, hear and speak, can achieve. From a young age Helen Keller attended many schools and even college, she succeeded at each school while still managing and overcoming any setbacks with her disability. Helen first began school classes at the Perkins Institute. The director of Perkins Michael Anagnos and the well known Alexander Graham Bell, both saw great potential in Helen Keller from the beginning of her life. Socialist Political Parties The Republican and Democratic parties are politically supportive of their own causes and class interests, which, with consistency, has remained the endorsement of the capitalist class. Both sides show equal opposition to the ideals of socialism. Because of this, capitalist are reluctant to allow the emancipation of people in the working class from wage slavery, and fear any man that may be intelligent enough to question the class struggle among the wage workers and the proprietors. However, the fervor that kindles interest in socialist politics, as is almost always the circumstance for the foundation of a social insurgency, is the observation that the economic system in America slants profoundly in favor of owners and against workers. That is the demand. This is socialism."(Bicknell, 390). With capitalism needing to be overthrown and removed from the thoughts of the working class, a rebellion from the socialists will provide recognition to the struggles created amongst wage earners versus their employers. Acknowledging the disparity and management of the workers forces an economic freedom given to those imprisoned by impoverished wages. Keep in mind though; Debs does not desire to go to war with men only the beliefs and attitudes that these men hold. In an article in the International Socialist Review, Debs wrote, "I am not a capitalist soldier; I am a proletarian revolutionist.... I am opposed to every war but one; I am for that war with heart and soul, and this the world–wide war of the social revolution." Unions Essay Michael Paul 099 66 3949 History 316z Trade unionism, industrial unionism, and socialism were the main forms of organized labor in the late nineteenth century early twentieth century, yet rarely did these shifting currents flow in complementary ways that might appeal to the vast majority of struggling workers. The three most important formal organizations were the American Federation of Labor (AFL), the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and the Socialist Party of America. All three of these organizations had there own strengths but the many weaknesses and divisions combined with outside influences caused the retardation of their radical, left wing ideas. The cost of which was not felt by the middle class but by the unskilled worker (Cashman,223.) The exclusion of the unskilled worker and the lack of a true effort to recruit women and blacks into the AFL as well as having a central body that was powerless to settle disputes between unions along with the elitest and often racist slant of some union policies were major flaws of the AFL . Samuel Gompers himself was anti immigration. Though women and blacks were urged to join the union they were met with harsh prejudices from the white members of the AFL. In 1902, blacks constituted only three percent of total union membership and mostly segregated into ineffectual locals. The AFL's record with women was almost as poor. High union dues, apprenticeship requirements and the autonomous structures of individual unions meant that few women entered craft unions. Indeed, the more women went to work, the more they aroused the anxieties of workmen who considered it their birthright to be the sole support of the household (Laurie,196.) This contributed to more prejudices against women and keeping their numbers down in the AFL. The unskilled and immigrant workers were the worst off in the AFL. Unskilled immigrant labor was regarded by most union leaders as undesirable and unorganizable. The AFL was a leading advocate for immigration restriction on both economic and nativist grounds. Many feel the Libertarian and Independent parties are not strong enough to carry the load in government. And with all the negative feelings of each party towards one another we are giving rise to the "Roman Empire Theory" where America is seen in similarities to the old Roman Empire that collapsed upon itself. Here are some examples of the connections: First, the huge cost of elections today have spiralled out of control costing billions of dollars. This is creating the appearance that our leaders are puppets of specail interest groups. In the Roman Empire, towards the end the elections were costing staggering amounts and causing terrible results. Thus, weakening the system. Second, in the late Roman Empire the road to wealth was seen as being in the political arena. The Roman leaders would accumulate great amounts of personal wealth. Today the very same thing is happening across America with those who want to become very wealthy get into the politics and seek a seat either in Congress or the Presidency. Third, as the Roman Empire spiralled down there were wars and a national state of security arose. The same can be said for America as in the last century we have had several wars and now the security of the nation is being challenged. Fourth, during the last years of the Roman Empire the leaders were given wealth from other nations to buy their influence to help them in return. The same is happening in America today as foreign powers send huge sums of money to our various leaders to gain their favor. Fifth, the Romans in their last years made huge profits from their business in foreign countries. The Cold War was an indirect confrontation between the two superpowers – the United States of America and the Soviet Union in the period of 1945 to 1991. Moreover, it was a struggle between two world systems: liberal capitalism and communism. The conflict never escalated into a direct war between the superpowers but both countries have been involved in numerous proxy wars throughout the globe. It is through the struggles of working people, women, and people of color that vital democratic reforms such as the forty–hour week, increases in the minimum wage, unemployment insurance, and Social Security have been won. Much, however, remains to be done before people take control over their own destinies, and before our wealth is used to ensure that everyone has access to such basic necessities as food, housing, education, and health care. Other countries show us that you can strive for both prosperity and social justice. We must do better. Why are there no models of democratic socialism? Although no country has fully instituted democratic socialism, the democratic socialist, social democratic, and labor movements of other countries have won many victories we can learn from. We can learn from the comprehensive welfare state maintained by the Swedes, from Canada's national health care system, France's nationwide child care program, or Nicaragua's literacy programs. Lastly, we can learn from efforts initiated right here in the U.S., such as the community health centers created by the government in the 1960s. They provided high quality family care, with community involvement in decision–making. But hasn't the European Social Democratic experiment failed? • 30. Socialism in The Jungle Essay Socialism in The Jungle The Rudkus family arrived from Lithuania to find Chicago as "a city in which justice and honor, women's bodies and men's souls, were for sale in the marketplace, and human beings writhed and fought and fell upon each other like wolves in the pit, in which lusts were raging fires, and men were fuel, and humanity was festering and stewing and wallowing in its own corruption." (Pg.165) The city, during the time span of the novel, was truly a jungle–like society in which Upton Sinclair found much fault and great room for improvement. Sinclair perceived the problem in American society to be the reign of capitalism. In The Jungle, he presented the reader with the Rudkus family; who encountered a great deal of ... Jurgis and his family were faced with many predicaments related to these poor surroundings and circumstances. The family hastily saw that they must enter the competition forced upon them in a social Darwinist fashion. When he first arrived in Packingtown, Jurgis found work quickly in the meat packing industry because of his strong, young stature. As the years went by, however, and he grew plagued with injuries and financial troubles, Jurgis found work to be evermore difficult to obtain and hold. The social system cracked down on the family and offered nowhere for the Rudkus' to turn for help. Not only did the family stumble upon difficulties in their workplaces, but in basic living conditions as well. Jurgis and his family witnessed such atrocities, as baby Antanas tragically drowning in the unpaved roads, devastating financial loss through misinformation concerning the purchase and custody of their house, and unsanitary meat packed and sold for regular consumption. Such incredible pandemonium was involved with virtually all of the Rudkus family's daily activities and never ceased to cause anxiety and worry in their overburdened lives. This desolation drove family members to radical attempts at survival and hope for some means of liberation from their atrocious new lives in America. At ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Socialist Party of America was founded on July 29, 1901, until they change the name to Social Democratic Party of America on December 31, 1972. Their goals did not change even know their name did. • 32. The Irony of the Jungle The Irony of The Jungle Between 1870 and 1900 Chicago grew from a population of 299,000 to almost 1.7 million, the fastest–growing city ever at the time. This surge in population was largely attributed to immigrants coming from European countries seeking a chance for employment and new freedoms associated with moving to the United States at the time. 1905, in particular, was a historic year when a surge of over 1 million immigrants came to the city. During this time, author Upton Sinclair was working undercover, investigating working conditions in the city's meatpacking district. Sinclair's research was integrated into his novel The Jungle, a tragic story about a group of immigrants from Lithuania led by Jurgis, the main ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although the injury was caused by leaping out of the way from out–of–control cattle, the company declares Jurgis' injury to be his own fault. Forced to rest at home with no means to earn money while other strong–bodied men replace him, the bank eventually forecloses on his home, only to resell to another eager family that shared Jurgis' optimism. Realizing this truth, Jurgis' father Anatanas is just as resolute to help provide for the family. He takes up a job in a pickling–basement with poor air quality and contact with poisonous chemicals, which ultimately leads to his death. Lack of sympathy is a common theme which helps Sinclair paint the picture of an unforgiving environment, where people come and go, processed much like cattle. Sinclair's title is appropriate given the ways people are treated when an accident happens. Similar tragic fates befall the rest of Jurgis' extended family that enter work in the meatpacking district. Realizing their home will be increasingly difficult to afford when deciding to have a child with Jurgis, Ona must work in the meatpacking district. If a strong man like Jurgis can be broken by the working and living conditions, it is no surprise that Ona is also broken by the system, being raped by her boss and unable to do anything about it because of his favor with politicians and lawmen. • 33. Essay on Uptian Sinclair And Socialism Upton Sinclair and Socialism Socialism has always been hard for me to understand. I never really grasped the concept of it until I read the book The Jungle and began to research for this paper. Before I begin I would like to go through a condensed version of the history of Socialism. It was founded in 1901 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Two groups came together to form the Socialists, the Social Democratic Party and the "Kangaroo" wing of the older Socialist Labor Party. These parties contained mostly immigrant workers from big cities (Jurgis from The Jungle was one such fictional worker). The new party expanded and included every type of extremist. They stood on the motto of "reform vs. revolution" and focused ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1960 the book The Other America was published by Michael Harrington. This book took great favor within the Socialist Party. The left wing Socialists were beginning to die out and in 1968 the right wing Socialists held the majority of the members. Over the next years many splits, divisions and merging occurred under the control of the right wing Socialists and in 1982 the party was renamed the Democratic Socialists of America. The only state to have a Socialist ballot is the Socialist Party of Oregon, which formed in 1994. This is how it remains today. In the beginning I read Upton Sinclair's novel The Jungle in order to gain entrance into the Advanced Placement English class. The things I learned about Socialism, the meat–packing industry and Sinclair's own views lead me to discover a new era of writers I didn't know existed. These writers brought to the attention of the nation problems that were carefully shielded from the public's eyes. Many of these authors such as Upton Sinclair, Jack London, Ida Tarbell and many others took a particularly Socialistic view and this was expressed in their writing. A few of the books that Sinclair wrote had an especially socialistic tone, such as The Jungle which was published in 1906. Conflictive to most people's beliefs The Jungle was not written to reform the meat–packing industry and incite pure food acts. He stated, "I aimed at the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Socialism: Ideology In The United States SOHEYL HAMZAVI POLSC–120, A. ARAIM 12/9/15 SOCIALISM Socialism is not an ideology that most people in the United States discuss often, but why is that? It is sometimes regarded as a "dirty" word to most, as it has distant similarities to the form of government that Joseph Stalin ruled his nation as, Communism; one of the very forms of governments our nation fought against. We as a people try to distant ourselves from Socialism because we are afraid that it will eventually lead to a similar transformation that Russia had when it became the USSR. The reason for that, I believe, is because people aren't educated enough about the topic itself, therefore leading them to stray away into their comfort of living in a nation led by Capitalism. In order ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It started out by having two branches of socialism; those being "utopian" and "revolutionary" socialism. Utopian socialism was associated to Comte de Saint Simon and Charles Fourier, who were both against revolutionary action after seeing the carnage of the French Revolution. The other French socialists were the revolutionaries. The most important of these revolutionaries was Louis Auguste Blanqui, and he associated a lot of his terms with Communism. Like the utopians, he criticized Capitalism but he believed that it could only be overthrown through violent revolution by the working classes. In the last third of the 19th century in Europe social democratic parties arose in Europe drawing mainly from Marxism. By 1968, the Vietnam War created the New Left, socialists who tended to be critical of the Soviet Union and social democracy. Some elements of the New Left and others favored decentralized collective ownership in the form of cooperatives or workers' councils. In Latin America, Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez coined the term 'Socialism of the 21st Century', which included a policy of nationalization of national assets such as oil, anti– imperialism, etc. By 1842, socialism became the topic of a major academic analysis by a German scholar, Lorenz von Stein, in his Socialism and Social Movement. Essay Upton Sinclair's The Jungle as Socialist Propaganda The Jungle as Socialist Propaganda   In the world of economic competition that we live in today, many thrive and many are left to dig through trashcans. It has been a constant struggle throughout the modern history of society. One widely prescribed example of this struggle is Upton Sinclair's groundbreaking novel, The Jungle. The Jungle takes the reader along on a journey with a group of recent Lithuanian immigrants to America. As well as a physical journey, this is a journey into a new world for them. They have come to America, where in the early twentieth century it was said that any man willing to work an honest day would make a living and could support his family. Some believe that Capitalism is the cause for much of the poverty in the nation today, but any hardcore capitalist will tell you that capitalism inherited poverty, and far from being a cause of poverty, it is the only solution.   However, believers in socialism would completely disagree with this ideal. Socialism is the economic system in which the workers, instead of a rich minority of entrepreneurs, own all industry. Workers receive the full fruits of their labors instead of being given miniscule compensation for backbreaking labor. Since the people are paid well for their work, work becomes a cooperative entity where people come to rely on one another and people actually are more inclined to do their fair share to help the advancement of society as a whole.   In order to discuss these issues as they are pertinent to this story, a general summary of the story must first be given. The story revolves around the life and family of Jurgis Rudkus, a Lithuanian immigrant who comes to America with his wife Ona, their children, and a few members of their extended family. They have heard the stories of other Lithuanian immigrants coming to America and making a fortune in the free economic system of America. They are bright–eyed looking ahead into their futures.
