BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE (BYOD)

Social networking platforms such as Facebook is
 becoming pervasive in education
BYOD models can provide more flexible
learning environment than any current restricted
 iPad systems.
BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE (BYOD)
Facebook app via a mobile device can be integrated
Virtual and mobile Community Based Learning (CBL) that can
be flexible efficient, instant and on demand.
The Devices itself is only the platform featured phones
or tablets for different platforms i.e (Android iOS etc.)
OPERATING SYSTEMS
APPLICATIONS (APPS):
Are created via the application frameworks, i.e. camera,
 game, Facebook app etc..etc..
SURVEY AND RESULTS
A questionnaire conducted on second year university
students studying e-business courses and Computer
Science courses at the Information Technology
 Department in (2012)
The questionnaire covered questions mobile phone
ownership, accessibility, use FB mobile app & the
possibility to use FB app to access learning content/form
 study groups
RESULTS!
• All students (N=70) who completed the questionnaire
 own a mobile phone,
       Blackberry (50),
       iPhone (11),
       Samsung (5)
       Nokia (4).
RESULTS!
100% of students have free access to WiFi when on campus (N=70).
100% of students have Facebook app installed on their mobile phone (N=70).
100% of students are keen to bring their own mobile phone to class and use it (N=70)
80% of students have WiFi at home when away from campus (N=56)
10% of students only use their mobile phone for educational purposes (N= 7)
85% of students think that using Facebook mobile app to form study groups is a good
  idea (N= 59)
50% of students think it would be useful to be able to access learning materials from
  their mobile(N=35)
CONCLUSION!
The results clearly show that students are happy to bring
their own mobile phone to the classroom and use
Facebook app for educational purpose. But some would
argue that this will create a digital divide amongst
students (as some students may have the latest device
               while others may have not).
But as teachers we have to create an appropriate
environment for our students in order for them to learn.
Thank you 
