Women s Roles During The Victorian Era
Women s Roles in the Victorian Era: The ideal woman in Victorian Times epitomized the good and
virtuous woman whose live revolved around the domestic sphere of the family and home. She was
pious, respectable and busy with no time for idle leisure. Her diligent and evident constant devotion to
her husband, as well as to her God. She accepted her place in the sexual hierarchy. Her role was that of
a domestic manager: wives and mothers. By the time that the industrial era was well under way in
Britain, the ideology that committed the private sphere to the woman and the public sphere of
business, commerce, and politics to the man had been widely dispersed. Women had to fight for an
education equal to that of men, many struggled for suitable, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

With this pay, they lived in anguish earning barely enough to survive. In addition, factory times were
inhuman, and accidents were frequent as were the inevitable. Physical deformities developed due to
the unnatural position of the body and prolonged time in which they would stand, while the humidity
caused delays in female development. Pregnant women worked up until the day they deliver and
returned to their job as soon as they were physically able. In 1891, a law was established requiring
women to take four weeks away from factory work after giving birth, but numerous women could not
afford this unpaid leave, and the law was unenforceable. Since women s economic conditions weren t
the best, prostitution was on the rise to make money. In 1864 to stop this trend, the government
launched the First Contagious Diseases Prevention Act. Women that were suspected of being unclean
were subjected to a genital examination. The refusal was punishable by imprisonment. The degrading
exams were inexpertly executed by male police, women could be suspected based on little to no
evidence, and the exams were humiliating and painful. After two extensions of the law in 1869 and
1866, the unjust acts were finally repealed in 1886. Working class women often had jobs to make ends
meet and to ensure family income if a husband became sick, injured, or died. There was no

Analysis Of Henry Iv Part 1
All of Shakespeare s considerable effort in the association of Henry with feminine aspects eventually
leads back to Elizabeth. During the time period Henry IV Part 1 was written during, Elizabeth s
legitimacy and authority was once again challenged. She was old and given to confrontations with her
advisors, and her line of succession was still in question as she had not yet declared an heir. She
experienced an attempted coup by the Earl of Essex and many waited for her death and the restoration
of a proper king to the throne (Smith 207 211). In writing Henry IV Part 1, Shakespeare worked
through not only the past anxieties of Elizabeth s reign, but also the current ones. As Andrews puts it,
[i]ts depiction of an aging, infirm monarch, who worries a incessantly over the succession and who is
pressured by a young and hot tempered but popular and militaristic noble, provides an inescapable
parallel to Elizabeth s situation at the close of the century (381).

Art in Education
Art in education
The arts are an essential ingredient for any child s education, allowing every student to accomplish
important things in life. I disagree that arts no longer holds a place in education. By imparting
important life skills, providing character education and better appreciation of the arts, arts become
essential to students in both the pursuit and achievement of excellence. Yet, many students have little
or no opportunity to learning arts as arts is devalued as a core element in the curriculum. Education,
without arts, is an incomplete education that fails to develop the full potential of individuals,
communities and societies. Hence arts are of great importance in the students learning experiences and
should hold a place ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Community and civic engagement becomes an explicit purpose off arts in education, allowing the
students to exercise their voice and engage in community, civic and social issues. As they develop a
moral conscience, youths are more willing to help and extend a helping hand in improving lives of the
underprivileged in society. Also through exposure to literary texts from around the world, students
gain access to the consciousness and lived realities of other communities; they apply critical reflection
and ethical reasoning as the navigate various cultural and moral ambiguities conveyed vividly through
the struggles of various characters in texts and, in the process of experiencing other worlds, they
develop an imagination hospitable towards the powerless and the foreign. Thus, arts become a form of
inspiration and motivation for youths to take action to help the less well off, building up their
character as well as imparting important values that all students must gain in life. Hence, arts become
vital in students character building and value learning.
By having arts in education, it allows students to develop aesthetic awareness and enjoy the finer
things in life. Arts provide students with opportunities to have much broader discussions about their
lives, their culture and politics. The pursuit of cultural understanding raising awareness of other
cultures allows students to increase their cultural capital. Students are encouraged to

What Are The Barriers Of Gender Equality
Today, the world is not doing as well as people would like: gender equality has yet to be achieved,
climate change is putting millions at risk, two hundred million people are unemployed, and people are
more stressed than ever. Trying to solve these world challenges, people are working more and more
hours, yet little progress is being made. The solution is rather simple: work less.
Women around the world are under represented in the workforce, making up less than 20% of CEO
positions, and, in America, fewer than 20% of Congressional positions are filled by women. Reasons
for this lack of representation may be due to prejudice, but it is important to recognize that women are
viewed as the primary child caregiver in most families. For this reason, many women take off work
for several months after childbirth and are often thwarted from higher positions because they take
leave. If both males and females had shorter work weeks, then both genders would be able to devote
more time to child care, allowing women to continue to work sooner and progress in their fields. In
addition, studies have shown that men who take paternity leave are more devoted to their families and
are 50% more likely to help their wives with domestic labor, such as cooking, cleaning, and laundry.
Thus, the shorter work week would lead to both equal representation in the work place and at home,
subsequently, breaking the barriers of gender inequality.
Shorter work weeks will not only benefit parents, but they

Food Desert
Introduction
Beverly is one of the most integrated areas in hype segregated Chicago. Like that of Hyde Park or
Rodgers Park, except Beverly obtains this diversity without the presence of a university. As well,
Beverly has retained its reputation as one of Chicago s most stable middle class residential districts
(Skerrett 2005). Black families during the 1950s and 60s started moving south as there was the
historical white flight , leaving these communities mainly black. Beverly, however, was the
expectation, as many black families did not come immediately here (Moore 2014). Demographically
today, Beverly is 57% white, 35% black, and 5.6% Hispanic, making it the 15th largest white
community in the city of Chicago, with most of these individuals are of ... Show more content on

a food desert and food access meant, designating that he has some prior knowledge that will aid in the
discussion of the food environment of Beverly. Nick states that the food environment is great (in
Beverly). There are numerous restaurants and grocery stores every couple of miles. It takes minutes to
get to a place that sells food . This contrast from his mother s thought may be due to his understanding
of what a food desert is. In regards to fast food, Nick says that there are a ton and around 10

his mother, Nick was unaware of any farmer s markets. This could be due to the fact that he does not

Mark Twain sThe Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn Be Banned...
For more than a century Mark Twain s novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has been ridiculed
and banned by schools across the United States. Over the years many people have asked Should this
novel be taught in classrooms? Most believe that this novel does more harm than good. This novel
should be taught in schools because it provides a clear picture of what time was like back in the 1800s.
The N word is known to cause many problems but if teachers can teach the message Twain was trying
to say then students would understand that this book was not hating on a particular group of people.
As Americans we can learn from this novel, to never allow such racist claims to any race throughout
our future.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn should be taught in schools because it is not just a book about
slaves and a boy who has grown up to be a low life. It is more about friendship, back in the 1800s
white people were taught to dehumanize black people. But in the novel, Huck and Jim become very
close. They become good friends throughout their adventures together. Jim cares for Huck because he
knows Huck s father is dead and he does not want Huck to feel alone. Huck and Jim get separated in
the fog while traveling on the Mississippi River. Once they finally find each other, Jim can hardly
believe that it is Huck. He is so glad that nothing bad had happened to him. Goodness gracious, is dat
you, Huck? En you ain dead you ain drownded you s back agin? It s too good for true, honey, it s too
good for true. Lemme look at you, chile, lemme feel o you. No, you ain dead! You s back agin, live en
soun , jis de same ole Huck de same ole Huck thanks to goodness! (Twain 93) Clearly, Jim cares about
Huck s well being, he cares about what happens to Huck throughout the novel. In a way Jim is the
father figure Huck never really had. John Wallace who was a harsh critic, who had a lot to say about
Twain s novel. Wallace says that this book makes black people feel lower and less of people. It
contributes to their feelings of low self esteem and to white students disrespect for black people.
(Wallace 310). Wallace makes a good point but students need to understand that this book is not racist
and it should be taught in

Essay about The Republican Party in Sinclair Lewis Babbitt
The Republican Party in Sinclair Lewis Babbitt
Sinclair Lewis Babbitt portrayed a man bent on following his political party; his actions seemingly
followed that religiously, and today s version of the Republican Party is proof that we are not too far
off from Lewis version, despite the expanse of time. George Babbitt, the main character in Lewis
novel, viewed the world in the eyes of a businessman. He saw immigrants as a waste to society,
business and the means to survive, and the ability to own the latest and greatest inventions as top
priorities in his life. One must, in the 1920s and well as in today s world, set themselves in a political
affiliation, generally one that describes the person and how he is. To ... Show more content on

Babbitt was just the icon of the Republican viewpoint.
Lewis probed into the Republican policies in order to write a character about them. Babbitt attempted
a change, a way of rebelling against his mechanical lifestyle, which one could view as someone s
break of the political system. It was too hard for him though, as his friends pressured him to join the
Good Citizens League and end this crazy rebellion. His downfall inevitably came over his wife s
operation, and he began to preach, the crimes of labor unions, the perils of immigration, and the
delights of golf, morality, and bank accounts (Lewis 368) more than ever. Lewis hinted through that
statement that the Good Citizens League was little more than a political club, or more specifically, an
offshoot of the Republican Party itself. Once again, Babbitt reflects the party s actions and policies in
what he speaks about, also saying a great deal about who was part of that party.
If the party was like that over seventy five years ago, and many would consider such thoughts corrupt,
the Republican Party surely must have changed over such a long time. The success of the Democrats
during the Great Depression and World War II led many to believe that the Republican Party was the
cause of the Great Depression. Its policies certainly would direct themselves toward the contrary yet
still the blame rested on them. The blame still rested

Critical Analysis Of Watership Down
Watership Down Literary Analysis
Good leaders ensure the world continues to advance. In contrast, bad leaders allow cruelty to spread
and are often over controlling, taking away the freedom of their people. Richard Adams s Watership
Down is a story about rabbits trying to establish a warren, a society. Hazel, the main character of the
book, has been informed that his warren is in danger. He leads a group of rabbits to try and start a new
warren in a better environment, away from peril. While trying to find this location, Hazel and his
rabbits stumble upon another warren, Efrafa. The secretive warren is led by a fierce rabbit, General
Woundwort. Though Hazel and General Woundwort are both leaders, they lead in two distinct ways.
Hazel and General Woundwort are drastically different leaders because they take power in contrasting
ways, have incongruent methods of leadership, and view their role as leader differently.
Hazel and General Woundwort are contrastive leaders because they acquire power differently. Hazel
assumes power through respect. He earns the respect of the rabbits in his warren, lending them to
establish Hazel as leader. The respect of the warren is earned when Hazel leads the rabbits across the
common, even while they are all exhausted. The rabbits are so impressed, Blackberry says Oh,
Hazel...you re what I call a Chief Rabbit! (57). The Chief Rabbit is the leader of the warren. This title
often belongs to the strongest of the rabbits, but Hazel is not

An Analysis Of John Cheever s The Swimmer
Snigdha Sama
Mrs. Hurtado
English I H
9 March 2016 A Tale of Riches to Rags in The Swimmer The character and intelligence of a person is
truly shown when he or she is forced to face reality. This is clearly established in The Swimmer , a
story about a man thrown off his high horse. The story starts with Neddy Merrill and his group of
wealthy socialites conversing at the Westerhazys house. Flashing back to his Olympic days, Neddy
decides to swim through bodies of water to reach his house. He calls this trail the Lucinda River and
with a lot of effort, as he isn t as fast as he was in his prime years, he reaches his house, only to find it
empty and devoid of his wife and daughters. John Cheever cleverly brings together a seemingly
random series of events and combines them. His writing style is best explained by his own words
when he says Fiction is art and art is the triumph over chaos. In his award winning short story, The
Swimmer , John Cheever uses symbolism, imagery, and characterization to establish a seemingly silly
and childish tone that evolves into a somber and realistic mood.
Symbolism is used a lot in the establishment of the mood. One way Cheever used symbolism in the
story was the change from dawn to dusk he shows in the tale. At the beginning of the story, Neddy
Merrill says It was a fine day. In the west there was a massive stand of cumulus cloud so like a city
seen from a distance from the bow of an approaching ship that it might have a

Latino Gender And Gender Diversity
In 2013, Latinos accounted for only 4.9% of the roles in the top 100 films of the year. From the
beginning, Hollywood had always been dominated by white men and women. However, as time
progressed there was a very slight change in cultural and ethnic diversity. Though it is more likely
now than ever to find a Latino or Latina in a Hollywood film, their roles are often small, stereotypical,
and almost entirely unimportant. As if it wasn t hard enough to get any role in any Hollywood film
regardless of ethnicity, Latinos have to endure playing a harshly demeaning role. Latino men are often
cast as comedic relief and play gardeners, janitors, or thugs. Latino women are often cast as maids or
mistresses. Aside from this, when women are cast as mistresses they are often submissive to their
white male partners, meaning that not only are these roles ethnically demeaning, but also sexist. Along
with Latino female sexualisation, though, Latino men are also heavily sexualized. Both Latino women
and men have to deal with the exploitation of their culture for stereotypical roles in a movie. However,
these are only some of the vicious patterns that attribute to the everlasting ethnic misrepresentation in
the biggest part of mass media, Hollywood.
Latinos are some of the main consumers of pretty much any media. They re the ethnic group that visit
movie theaters most and they invest so much of their time and money to keep media outlets such as
movies and TV shows going. However, they re

The Emotional Analysis Of Migraine By Twenty-One Pilots
Migraine, while it s usually known as super painful headache, ask a teenager and they will probably
say it s a hit song from the Ohio based synthpop, rap rock, indie rock, and yes even reggae, band
Twenty One Pilots. Underneath the techno beat and flying piano notes, are lyrics with a deeper
meaning. The excellent lyricist, Tyler Joseph, in a spit fire fashion, confronts many prevalent feelings
and struggles. Within the song, Tyler Joseph attacks his brain, that keeps sending him depressing, and
pessimistic thoughts. This song uses many allegories represented by literal images. Migraine by
Twenty One Pilots is a unique song that puts a voice to the battles of the mind; it has a riveting theme,
complex setting, and an intriguing style.
Furthermore, the theme of this song is Tyler s migraine, although it seems like a simple concept his
migraine is due to his overworking head. In the song, Tyler sings (Line 12) let it be said what this
headache represents it s me defending in suspense ...(line 16) that s best represented by my depressing
thoughts ,and ( line 32). something you won t forget its all about my forehead ( line 33 ) it s a door
that holds back contents . He also sings in the very beginning of the song (Line 1); Am I the only one I
know ( line 2 ) waging my wars behind my face and above my throat. If you know anything about
anatomy you will know he is referring to his brain. The overarching theme of this catchy song is the
battles of the brain, which of course is best represented by the migraine.
Schizophrenic pop is what some people may label this duo; it makes sense for this song. The setting
bounces around everywhere. There is a significant amount geographical settings within this song,
there is also a gigantic amount of literal imagery as well. Here are a few examples; (line 28) Pardon
my yelling and telling you green gardens! (line 29) are not what s growing in my psyche! , (line 35)
and behind my eyelids are islands of violence. (line 36) My mind s shipwrecked it s the only island

The Beatles are generally considered to be the best band in the history of popular music. This is
mainly due to the influence they had on other bands and musicians all over the world such as Billy

(Barge Schlueter, 2004, p. 237) describes memorable messages as embedded with assumptions about
who can speak, about what and when, through that medium, and with what intent and these discourses

memorable messages have three different qualities that make a good memorable message. To start,
(Knapp et al., 1981) states that First, memorable messages often come from someone who is older and
of higher status, Most campaigns will use a spokesperson who is well known to the public; an
example of this is a celebrity putting their name towards a cause. These spokespeople are often the
campaign s biggest supporters both financially and motivational. (Miles A, et. al., 2001) describes that
research into adult interventions shows that those who take part in mass media health campaigns are
women from higher socioeconomic groups who are already engaging in better health practices.
Second, memorable messages are often brief oral injunctions that prescribe rules of conduct for
solving a personal problem, (Knapp et al., 1981). These would be more explicit directives, such as

Storm Warnings
The basics of survival and the defining bricks on the pyramid of survival are food, water, and security
(or shelter). Anything outside of these are not necessities but simply strong desires. The stability of the
pyramid is threatened when any of the bricks crack. In the poem Storm Warnings by Adrienne Rich,
the brick of security is deteriorating. In a literal sense, the narrator is preparing herself and her home
for a storm that could easily swipe her shelter, or in a figurative sense her sanity.
Storm warnings appear in different ways that appeal to our senses. Such as the blackening of the skies
(vision), the forecast predictions (hearing), and the actual precipitation (touch). Much like our senses,
our emotions alert our inner selves

Children s Miracle Networks By Marie Osmond, John...
In 1983, Osmond Studios in Utah aired a Telethon resulting in $4.8 million raised for 22 children s
hospitals. This fundraiser led to the formation of the Children s Miracle Networks by Marie Osmond,
John Schneider, Joe Lake and Mick Shannon (About Us, 2016). CMN s partnership with corporations,
celebrities and individuals displays positive public relations and tactics by which other non profits can

Children s Miracle Network, headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, was formed in 1983 by Marie
Osmond, John Schneider, Mick Shannon and Joe Lake as what started out as a Telethon. The company
then quickly expanded into a major non profit organization. Throughout the late 20th century, CMN
employed multiple fundraising tactics and acquired various corporate and celebrity sponsors (About
Us, 2016). Since 1983, CMN has raised over $5 billion to aid over 170 children s hospitals, support
research, help families financially and generate awareness (Financials, 2016). CMN governance

Pros And Cons Of Recidivism Rates
As of the end of 2015, there were 1,526,800 prisoners in the United States being held in state or
federal correctional facilities. Every year, thousands of people are released from jail or prison. Most
people who are incarcerated today will eventually be released. Most of these individuals return to a
life of freedom without the skills they need to survive. Recidivism rates suggest that many of these
individuals will re offend within six months of release, and most will reoffend within three years. This
is not because they re bad people; it s because they are trying to thrive in a system that sets them up to
fail.
Given grim post release arrest rates, it s hard to understand why our government is not doing more to
help those transitioning from incarceration to life on the outside. It doesn t make sense for taxpayer
dollars to go towards incarcerating people over and over it seems that the money could be better spent
improving rehabilitation programs for inmates. Increased funding for programs aimed at helping
former inmates transition to life on the outside would likely lead to better outcomes for those
individuals, fewer crimes being committed, and lower recidivism rates. One would hope that our
society would want to see people who are incarcerated serve their time, get rehabilitated, get released,
and become productive members of their communities.
It is well known that former inmates face significant challenges upon being released. Some of these
challenges include

China s One Child Policy
In China, there are more than 1.3 billion people living, working and building families. In 1978, the
government created China s one child policy. China s one child policy was established by Chinese
leader Deng Xiaoping in 1979 to limit China s population growth. The policy lets couples have only
one child. If they have another child the mother is pressured to abort the pregnancy. The one child
policy has brought many disasters to china since the one child policy was established. First are the
problems of the female abortions and the killing of infants. As a result, abortions of females have
become commonplace, as well as the killing of babies born post partum. China s women must have an

These eras were characterized by wide scale crime and violence. In the past 19th century, China has
had the same problem before. Where there are more men the more violence there is especially in the

local office showed up one morning in October, she slipped through a gap in the concrete wall around
the house and bolted like a sprinter toward the main road. She was trying to hide her pregnancy from
the government. They took my daughter in law at 9 a.m. By 5 p.m., she was dead, Gao said. Because
of the one child policy Mao had to abort her child even though she was two months away from labor.
In 2009, a woman in Liaocheng, also in Shandong province, died after being forced to get an abortion

Class Between Class And Class Essay
Economic class division in the United States is simultaneously one of the most visible and invisible
issues facing this nation today. Unlike issues that many passionate individuals aren t afraid to voice
their opinions on such as racism, sexism, climate change, and marriage equality, the issue of class
divide is like the elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about or address. As Bell Hooks puts
it, author of Where We Stand: Class Matters, Racism and sexism can be exploited in the interests of
class power. Yet no one wants to talk about class. (Hooks 7) The fact that discussions of class and
class divide have become such a taboo in the United States is truly disappointing. Class, more than
race or gender, is the single biggest factor in determining someone s success. Therefor, it should go
without saying that discussions and open dialog about class are crucial in this society in order to
advances its citizens and promote success with as many people as possible. It wasn t always like this.
There was indeed a time in our history when class was talked about, a time when the poor were cared
for, not seen as second class citizens or a taboo. David Hilfiker describes an earlier time in our history
as a nation when it was just assumed that a physician would care for the poor. However, in more
recent times Hilfiker finds himself regarded almost as a saint because he chooses to work with the
poor. (Hooks 41) Although the precise point at which this switch in logic

Pentheus Death In Euripides The Bacchae

this is full of encounters that show where Pentheus went wrong. To avoid a tragic demise according to
Euripides, one must know their own limits and be aware of the finiteness of human life, on top of
obeying the gods. Pentheus did none of these. Euripides uses The Bacchae as a receptacle to bring

to not acknowledge that there are powers in this world greater than you. If one begins to believe that

human limitations. We are unlikely to come across a mortal embodiment of a god, yet Euripides begs

a girl who is stuck in a city underground and tries to get out using a passageway. These two may

Increase In Minimum Wage
The minimum wage is a metric which dictates the minimum cost that low wage labor has on a firm
(Lopresti and Mumford 2016). Wages are a cost, but may conversely be understood as an incentive for
employees. The minimum wage determines the quality of work which is supplied to employers. An
increase in the minimum wage improves wage growth for workers, increases the supply of workers,
and creates a competitive environment which allocates jobs to the most qualified workers, thereby
increasing efficiency and quality in the market. First, the minimum wage sets a common standard for
how employers determine pay for low wage workers. Lopresti and Mumford (2016) state that an
increase in the minimum wage less than 5% has a negative impact on wages for low income workers;
a minimum wage increase greater than 20% showed significant improvement in the wage growth of
the same group. Setting a low wage growth standard is harmful to the worker. However, a significant
increase in the minimum wage would set a high wage growth standard. A high wage growth, for the
employed worker, increases their income and financial stability. ... Show more content on

The cost of increasing the minimum wage may not appear beneficial. Ippolito (2003) argues that an

The Authors and Their Works
The Authors Their Works
In the words of E.H. Carr in his classic study of historiography, As discussed the backgrounds of the
authors and their works plays a significant role in the writing of their biographies. Everybody is
subjective; we are all to an extent shaped by what is around us.
The selected works mark turning points in the writing of the life of Cook, and each of them is
considered as an important work within the field of Cook studies. They all display certain
characteristics and carry certain discourses that mark them as also being evocative of their respective
time periods. Cook scholars have often tried to prove or disprove certain facts, striven to edit and
correct details or attempted to replicate and summarize the total available information. All of this is
part of a wider discourse, an exploration of which is helpful in interpreting the backdrop surrounding
Captain James Cook.
It seems only logical to start with the very first biography, although several works penned by Cook s
colleagues dealing with his character had appeared before this, most notably that of Johann Reinhold
Forster, naturalist on board the second voyage, in 1778. This first biographical work, The Life of
Captain James Cook, was written by the biographer and Non conformist Reverend Andrew Kippis, a
member of The Royal Society and The Society of Antiquaries, and appeared 9 years after Cook s
death in 1788. Consequently this is the same year as the arrival of The First Fleet of ships

Democratization Of The Market Case Study
In the past, private individuals and large institutions have largely invested in actively managed mutual
funds, such as Fidelity, in which fund managers choose stocks with one goal to surpass the market.
But after the financial crisis of 2008, investors switched to index funds, which reproduce stock
indices, such as the S P 500.
The scale of the changes is striking: from 2007 to 2016. in actively managed funds an outflow of
about $ 1.2 trillion was recorded, while index funds received more than $ 1.4 trillion.
In the first quarter of 2017, index funds raised more than $ 200 billion and this is the highest quarterly
growth.

index in which most people invest.
The power of passive investors
With corporate property comes the power of the shareholder.
Recently, BlackRock claimed that it had not legally been the owner of the shares on its balance sheet,
but rather acts as a kind of custodian for its investors.
This is common practice for lawyers.
What can not be denied is that the Big Three still uses the right to vote with these shares. Therefore,
they should be perceived by the owners of de facto corporate leaders.
These companies have publicly stated that they are seeking to exert influence. William McNabb,
chairman and chief executive officer of Vanguard, said in 2015 that in the past, some mistakenly
believed that our predominantly passive management style implies a passive attitude toward corporate
governance, but that s very far from the truth.
And if you analyze the vote of the Big Three, it turns out that it is coordinated through centralized
departments of corporate governance. This requires considerable effort, because technically

Beginning in 1865, railroad tracks were mainly utilized for the luxury sleeping cars and transport of
goods and materials across long distances. As the purpose of train travel improved over the century, so
did the material used for train tracks. The main material used in tracks is steel, and this is crack
resistance to allow smooth and continuous travel during long journeys. Similarly, toy train tracks are
designed in a similar fashion, but composed of different material such as wood or plastic. Plastic
railroad tracks do not always possess the endurability to allow trains to function continuously.
However, toy train tracks are a fundamental building block in a person s childhood. During the young

The Three Key Ideas Of Social Justice
Social justice comes in a multitude of definitions. In my opinion, I think social justice can be
described using three key ideas. The first subject I would like to talk about refers to the inclusion of
people from a wide array of backgrounds. Whether that may be different ethnicities, cultural views,
societal opinions, or personal beliefs, it is important to consider all of these varying perspectives in
order to persuade the ideas of social justice with a diverse and open mind. Second, social justice must
come to be with the use of teamwork. Collaboration is very important to social justice because in
order for social justice to include everyone, the guidelines of it must have been produced by a large
variety of people. Social justice also

Role Of Engineers During The Planning Process
1. Introduction
Peace Bridge is a cycle footpath bridge across the River Foyle in Derry, Ireland. It connected the
Walled city centre and the Ebrington redevelopment site. The bridge opened to the public in 25 June
2011.
Peace Bridge won many excellence awards such as Structural Steel Design award, ICE North East
Region Robert Stephenson award and the Overall planning award by the Irish Planning Institute. The
government and the public have described the bridge as a sustainable infrastructure asset, which
provided the basic services, and allowed the local communities and societies to function more
effectively. More importantly, Peace Bridge became a landmark very quickly due to its iconic
structure, which attracts millions of visitors every year.
This essay will mainly focus on the roles of engineers during the planning process. The relation
between engineers and the associated Ecological, Economical, Political and regeneration aspects will
also be discussed.

Structure of the Bridge
The bridge is a self anchored suspension bridge. It combined the reverse curvature of the deck,

Organic food is more expensive than regular food items. The farm machinery needed to harvest

Use Your Regular Bank Account for Credit Card Deposits
Very few merchants realize the substantial risk they are taking by having their credit card sales
deposited into their regular bank account.
When you sign up with a credit card processor you give the processor the right to withdraw funds
from your bank account. This allows the processor to reverse sales when the customer files a
complaint. It also allows the processor to take protective action if they suspect fraud. It is a common
practice for processors to withdrawal and hold funds for a substantial period when you terminate your

The processor has the right to withdraw funds from your account if fraud is suspected. This can be

Bunyan s experiences in Grace Abounding and in what he wrote about in Pilgrim s Progress: Bunyan s
and Christian s (the main character in Pilgrim s Progress) journey to salvation was very similar,
Bunyan and Christian had similar experiences concerning God s promises, and the man in the iron

After Bunyan became a Christian, he experienced a time of hardship and temptation. He found himself
in great despair and questioning God. God revealed Himself to Bunyan and reassured him of the
scriptures and His promises. Bunyan says in Grace Abounding, The scriptures were now wonderful to
me. I saw their truth and reliability as the keys to heaven. ... This temptation made me understand
more about the nature of God s promises than ever before. In Pilgrim s Progress, he writes of Christian
and Hopeful straying from the right path. They were captured by the giant, Despair, and thrown into
his dungeon where they were deprived of food, water, and light. The giant threatened to kill them and
tempted them to take their own lives. Nearly overcome with despair, they were tempted to do this
when Christian remembered he had a key called Promise. Since it could be used to unlock any door,
they unlocked the dungeon door and escaped. Bunyan, Christian, and Hopeful had all learned a
valuable lesson about how God s promises can overcome despair and

Erich Remarque s Magnum Of All Quiet On The Western Front
The First World War, or the ill named War to End all Wars, was one that brought hell to Earth and
mankind. For the first time in history, industry had appeared to make killing efficient. In static
trenches, young men from around the world were killed by artillery kilometres away, poison gas, and
disease. All nations in the conflict experienced the creation of a Lost Generation; men who lost their
lives, limbs, or the ability to live a normal life. Paul Baumer, the young German protagonist of All
Quiet on the Western Front becomes a member of this sad generation through his sad journey to the
ultimate elixir, death. In Erich Remarque s magnum opus All Quiet on the Western Front, Paul
Baumer is faced by various emotionally jarring tests that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the Germans repel the French, Paul and his company push back, and for a moment, turn from men
to animals. While running and killing Paul illustrates, We have lost all feeling for one another. We can
hardly control ourselves when our glance lights on the form of some other men. We are insensible,
dead men, who through some trick, some dreadful magic, are still able to run and to kill (Remarque
55). This moment demonstrates the damage that has occurred. Paul already considered himself a dead
man, a men that has lost all humanity. It is this moment that is the first step in the hero s slow demise,
in which he loses all joy and hope. It is impossible for, in the conditions described, to be able to return
home; death becomes the only elixir. Hence, it only takes two more events in his short life for Paul
Baumer to realise this elixir. After the initial French Offensive, Paul is given time to recover, getting
leave and additional training. But, when he returns back to the front, he reaches the climax of the
journey, as he kills a man in close quarters. While on a night expedition into No Man s Land, Baumer
is surprised by a Frenchman, but is able to swiftly recover and, to his understanding, kill him. But in
the morning, Paul is confronted with the truth: Then, he opens his eyes... The body is perfectly still

Symbolism In Beata Rossetti
In a symbol there is concealment and yet revelation
Thomas Carlyle
Solving of the problem of love and death was an implication of the symbolists ideal view. On the one
side, passionate love, which boarders with being demоnic, that leаds lоvers to dеath, аnd the dеath
itself, that оpens the doors to new life, making the lovers immortal. The idea of expressing
interrelation of these two concepts, crucially important for symbolism, that lies in the artwork Beata
Beatrix made by Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
The subject of this artwork is the scene from the emotionally autobiographical work of Dante Alighieri
La Vita Nuova , at the moment of Beatrice Portinari s death, who the author loved deeply. Rossetti
depicts the moment of Beatrice s death on her parents balcony in 1290, however, for the artist this
scene means much more, than just a visual interpretation of a scene from a book.

art critics that it is the symbol of death), whereas on the opposite side of Beatrice there is a mystical

connection between Beatrice and Dante (the parallel between Elizabeth and Rossetti also may be
drawn).
At the background next to Dante we can see a sundial that shows 9 o clock. This number famous
author (Alighieri) connects to Beatrice s life and death in a mystical way several times throughout La
Vita Nuova . Behind heroine s head we can see the river Arno, a bridge above it, and a slight silhouette
of the Ponte Vecchio and the Duomo of Florence, where Dante Alighieri and Beatrice were both living

Martin Luther s Reformation Research Paper
There has always been religion on earth probably as long as man has been, throughout every walk of
life. During the 6th century institutional church reach a new high of lows. In a sense it could be
considered corrupt or impure. This was a time where sin was relieved from you by the act of
purchasing indulgences, or making a pilgrimage. This led many pure at heart question the framework
of their churches. Most notably when the Church of Rome pushed selling indulgences to collect
money for the rebuilding of Saint Peters cathedral. This led to extreme criticism, especially to those
who held the aristolic ideals close to heart. With all that was going on, the movement needed a face, a
person to take the thoughts and feelings many had and put it out to the world without holding back.
The backbone of this reformation was left to the son of a coal miner, Martin Luther [1483 1546]. He
chose to discontinue his pursuit in the study of law and became an Augustinian monk. From then on,
as a doctor of theology at the University of Wittenberg, he spoke in opposition of the church.
Providing extreme sermons and essays that offered solutions to what he says as the misery and
wretchedness of Christendom. Luther strongly believed that sin was part of being human. Yet the way

What he created was a list of his indifferences with the church that challenged much of the way they
went about. He then posted this list on the doors to the cathedral of Wittenberg, where it began to
snowball through the press and avalanched all throughout Europe, then letting everyone see what
Luther has challenged the Church of Rome with. His views in my mind were those of a clear minded
and pure hearted man. Sticking to the scripture which founded church he reminded many the
underlying roots from which their beliefs were founded. He encouraged the reading of the bible to his
followers and even translated the Old and New Testament into

  • 2. Women s Roles During The Victorian Era Women s Roles in the Victorian Era: The ideal woman in Victorian Times epitomized the good and virtuous woman whose live revolved around the domestic sphere of the family and home. She was pious, respectable and busy with no time for idle leisure. Her diligent and evident constant devotion to her husband, as well as to her God. She accepted her place in the sexual hierarchy. Her role was that of a domestic manager: wives and mothers. By the time that the industrial era was well under way in Britain, the ideology that committed the private sphere to the woman and the public sphere of business, commerce, and politics to the man had been widely dispersed. Women had to fight for an education equal to that of men, many struggled for suitable, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With this pay, they lived in anguish earning barely enough to survive. In addition, factory times were inhuman, and accidents were frequent as were the inevitable. Physical deformities developed due to the unnatural position of the body and prolonged time in which they would stand, while the humidity caused delays in female development. Pregnant women worked up until the day they deliver and returned to their job as soon as they were physically able. In 1891, a law was established requiring women to take four weeks away from factory work after giving birth, but numerous women could not afford this unpaid leave, and the law was unenforceable. Since women s economic conditions weren t the best, prostitution was on the rise to make money. In 1864 to stop this trend, the government launched the First Contagious Diseases Prevention Act. Women that were suspected of being unclean were subjected to a genital examination. The refusal was punishable by imprisonment. The degrading exams were inexpertly executed by male police, women could be suspected based on little to no evidence, and the exams were humiliating and painful. After two extensions of the law in 1869 and 1866, the unjust acts were finally repealed in 1886. Working class women often had jobs to make ends meet and to ensure family income if a husband became sick, injured, or died. There was no ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Analysis Of Henry Iv Part 1 All of Shakespeare s considerable effort in the association of Henry with feminine aspects eventually leads back to Elizabeth. During the time period Henry IV Part 1 was written during, Elizabeth s legitimacy and authority was once again challenged. She was old and given to confrontations with her advisors, and her line of succession was still in question as she had not yet declared an heir. She experienced an attempted coup by the Earl of Essex and many waited for her death and the restoration of a proper king to the throne (Smith 207 211). In writing Henry IV Part 1, Shakespeare worked through not only the past anxieties of Elizabeth s reign, but also the current ones. As Andrews puts it, [i]ts depiction of an aging, infirm monarch, who worries a incessantly over the succession and who is pressured by a young and hot tempered but popular and militaristic noble, provides an inescapable parallel to Elizabeth s situation at the close of the century (381). ... I disagree that arts no longer holds a place in education. By imparting important life skills, providing character education and better appreciation of the arts, arts become essential to students in both the pursuit and achievement of excellence. Yet, many students have little or no opportunity to learning arts as arts is devalued as a core element in the curriculum. Education, without arts, is an incomplete education that fails to develop the full potential of individuals, communities and societies. Community and civic engagement becomes an explicit purpose off arts in education, allowing the students to exercise their voice and engage in community, civic and social issues. As they develop a moral conscience, youths are more willing to help and extend a helping hand in improving lives of the underprivileged in society. Also through exposure to literary texts from around the world, students gain access to the consciousness and lived realities of other communities; they apply critical reflection and ethical reasoning as the navigate various cultural and moral ambiguities conveyed vividly through the struggles of various characters in texts and, in the process of experiencing other worlds, they develop an imagination hospitable towards the powerless and the foreign. Thus, arts become a form of inspiration and motivation for youths to take action to help the less well off, building up their character as well as imparting important values that all students must gain in life. Hence, arts become vital in students character building and value learning. By having arts in education, it allows students to develop aesthetic awareness and enjoy the finer things in life. • 6. What Are The Barriers Of Gender Equality Today, the world is not doing as well as people would like: gender equality has yet to be achieved, climate change is putting millions at risk, two hundred million people are unemployed, and people are more stressed than ever. Trying to solve these world challenges, people are working more and more hours, yet little progress is being made. The solution is rather simple: work less. Women around the world are under represented in the workforce, making up less than 20% of CEO positions, and, in America, fewer than 20% of Congressional positions are filled by women. Reasons for this lack of representation may be due to prejudice, but it is important to recognize that women are viewed as the primary child caregiver in most families. For this reason, many women take off work for several months after childbirth and are often thwarted from higher positions because they take leave. If both males and females had shorter work weeks, then both genders would be able to devote more time to child care, allowing women to continue to work sooner and progress in their fields. In addition, studies have shown that men who take paternity leave are more devoted to their families and are 50% more likely to help their wives with domestic labor, such as cooking, cleaning, and laundry. Thus, the shorter work week would lead to both equal representation in the work place and at home, subsequently, breaking the barriers of gender inequality. Shorter work weeks will not only benefit parents, but they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The first proposition that stares us in the face is this: the Negro is free; he is here and he is here to stay. He is a citizen and must learn to manage his own affairs. • 9. Mark Twain sThe Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn Be Banned... For more than a century Mark Twain s novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has been ridiculed and banned by schools across the United States. Over the years many people have asked Should this novel be taught in classrooms? Most believe that this novel does more harm than good. This novel should be taught in schools because it provides a clear picture of what time was like back in the 1800s. The N word is known to cause many problems but if teachers can teach the message Twain was trying to say then students would understand that this book was not hating on a particular group of people. As Americans we can learn from this novel, to never allow such racist claims to any race throughout our future. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn should be taught in schools because it is not just a book about slaves and a boy who has grown up to be a low life. It is more about friendship, back in the 1800s white people were taught to dehumanize black people. But in the novel, Huck and Jim become very close. They become good friends throughout their adventures together. Jim cares for Huck because he knows Huck s father is dead and he does not want Huck to feel alone. Huck and Jim get separated in the fog while traveling on the Mississippi River. Once they finally find each other, Jim can hardly believe that it is Huck. He is so glad that nothing bad had happened to him. Goodness gracious, is dat you, Huck? En you ain dead you ain drownded you s back agin? It s too good for true, honey, it s too good for true. Lemme look at you, chile, lemme feel o you. No, you ain dead! You s back agin, live en soun , jis de same ole Huck de same ole Huck thanks to goodness! John Wallace who was a harsh critic, who had a lot to say about Twain s novel. Wallace says that this book makes black people feel lower and less of people. • 11. Essay about The Republican Party in Sinclair Lewis Babbitt The Republican Party in Sinclair Lewis Babbitt Sinclair Lewis Babbitt portrayed a man bent on following his political party; his actions seemingly followed that religiously, and today s version of the Republican Party is proof that we are not too far off from Lewis version, despite the expanse of time. George Babbitt, the main character in Lewis novel, viewed the world in the eyes of a businessman. He saw immigrants as a waste to society, business and the means to survive, and the ability to own the latest and greatest inventions as top priorities in his life. One must, in the 1920s and well as in today s world, set themselves in a political affiliation, generally one that describes the person and how he is. To ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Babbitt was just the icon of the Republican viewpoint. Lewis probed into the Republican policies in order to write a character about them. Babbitt attempted a change, a way of rebelling against his mechanical lifestyle, which one could view as someone s break of the political system. It was too hard for him though, as his friends pressured him to join the Good Citizens League and end this crazy rebellion. His downfall inevitably came over his wife s operation, and he began to preach, the crimes of labor unions, the perils of immigration, and the delights of golf, morality, and bank accounts (Lewis 368) more than ever. Lewis hinted through that statement that the Good Citizens League was little more than a political club, or more specifically, an offshoot of the Republican Party itself. Once again, Babbitt reflects the party s actions and policies in what he speaks about, also saying a great deal about who was part of that party. If the party was like that over seventy five years ago, and many would consider such thoughts corrupt, the Republican Party surely must have changed over such a long time. The success of the Democrats during the Great Depression and World War II led many to believe that the Republican Party was the cause of the Great Depression. Its policies certainly would direct themselves toward the contrary yet still the blame rested on them. The blame still rested ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Critical Analysis Of Watership Down Watership Down Literary Analysis Good leaders ensure the world continues to advance. In contrast, bad leaders allow cruelty to spread and are often over controlling, taking away the freedom of their people. Richard Adams s Watership Down is a story about rabbits trying to establish a warren, a society. Hazel, the main character of the book, has been informed that his warren is in danger. He leads a group of rabbits to try and start a new warren in a better environment, away from peril. While trying to find this location, Hazel and his rabbits stumble upon another warren, Efrafa. The secretive warren is led by a fierce rabbit, General Woundwort. Though Hazel and General Woundwort are both leaders, they lead in two distinct ways. Hazel and General Woundwort are drastically different leaders because they take power in contrasting ways, have incongruent methods of leadership, and view their role as leader differently. Hazel and General Woundwort are contrastive leaders because they acquire power differently. Hazel assumes power through respect. He earns the respect of the rabbits in his warren, lending them to establish Hazel as leader. The respect of the warren is earned when Hazel leads the rabbits across the common, even while they are all exhausted. • 14. An Analysis Of John Cheever s The Swimmer Snigdha Sama Mrs. Hurtado English I H 9 March 2016 A Tale of Riches to Rags in The Swimmer The character and intelligence of a person is truly shown when he or she is forced to face reality. This is clearly established in The Swimmer , a story about a man thrown off his high horse. The story starts with Neddy Merrill and his group of wealthy socialites conversing at the Westerhazys house. Flashing back to his Olympic days, Neddy decides to swim through bodies of water to reach his house. He calls this trail the Lucinda River and with a lot of effort, as he isn t as fast as he was in his prime years, he reaches his house, only to find it empty and devoid of his wife and daughters. John Cheever cleverly brings together a seemingly random series of events and combines them. His writing style is best explained by his own words when he says Fiction is art and art is the triumph over chaos. In his award winning short story, The Swimmer , John Cheever uses symbolism, imagery, and characterization to establish a seemingly silly and childish tone that evolves into a somber and realistic mood. Symbolism is used a lot in the establishment of the mood. One way Cheever used symbolism in the story was the change from dawn to dusk he shows in the tale. At the beginning of the story, Neddy Merrill says It was a fine day. In the west there was a massive stand of cumulus cloud so like a city seen from a distance from the bow of an approaching ship that it might have a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. Latino Gender And Gender Diversity In 2013, Latinos accounted for only 4.9% of the roles in the top 100 films of the year. From the beginning, Hollywood had always been dominated by white men and women. However, as time progressed there was a very slight change in cultural and ethnic diversity. Though it is more likely now than ever to find a Latino or Latina in a Hollywood film, their roles are often small, stereotypical, and almost entirely unimportant. As if it wasn t hard enough to get any role in any Hollywood film regardless of ethnicity, Latinos have to endure playing a harshly demeaning role. Latino men are often cast as comedic relief and play gardeners, janitors, or thugs. Latino women are often cast as maids or mistresses. Aside from this, when women are cast as mistresses they are often submissive to their white male partners, meaning that not only are these roles ethnically demeaning, but also sexist. Along with Latino female sexualisation, though, Latino men are also heavily sexualized. Both Latino women and men have to deal with the exploitation of their culture for stereotypical roles in a movie. However, these are only some of the vicious patterns that attribute to the everlasting ethnic misrepresentation in the biggest part of mass media, Hollywood. Latinos are some of the main consumers of pretty much any media. They re the ethnic group that visit movie theaters most and they invest so much of their time and money to keep media outlets such as movies and TV shows going. However, they re ... The Emotional Analysis Of Migraine By Twenty-One Pilots Migraine, while it s usually known as super painful headache, ask a teenager and they will probably say it s a hit song from the Ohio based synthpop, rap rock, indie rock, and yes even reggae, band Twenty One Pilots. Underneath the techno beat and flying piano notes, are lyrics with a deeper meaning. The excellent lyricist, Tyler Joseph, in a spit fire fashion, confronts many prevalent feelings and struggles. Within the song, Tyler Joseph attacks his brain, that keeps sending him depressing, and pessimistic thoughts. This song uses many allegories represented by literal images. Migraine by Twenty One Pilots is a unique song that puts a voice to the battles of the mind; it has a riveting theme, complex setting, and an intriguing style. Furthermore, the theme of this song is Tyler s migraine, although it seems like a simple concept his migraine is due to his overworking head. In the song, Tyler sings (Line 12) let it be said what this headache represents it s me defending in suspense ...(line 16) that s best represented by my depressing thoughts ,and ( line 32). something you won t forget its all about my forehead ( line 33 ) it s a door that holds back contents . He also sings in the very beginning of the song (Line 1); Am I the only one I know ( line 2 ) waging my wars behind my face and above my throat. If you know anything about anatomy you will know he is referring to his brain. The overarching theme of this catchy song is the battles of the brain, which of course is best represented by the migraine. Schizophrenic pop is what some people may label this duo; it makes sense for this song. The setting bounces around everywhere. There is a significant amount geographical settings within this song, there is also a gigantic amount of literal imagery as well. Here are a few examples; (line 28) Pardon my yelling and telling you green gardens! (line 29) are not what s growing in my psyche! , (line 35) and behind my eyelids are islands of violence. (line 36) My mind s shipwrecked it s the only island my mind could find. (line 37) I did not know it was such a violent island. Impact Of The Beatles And Frank Zappa Cultural Impact Of The Beatles And Frank Zappa In my thesis I would like to discuss both the Beatles and Frank Zappa and their cultural and political impact on the Anglosphere. What the Beatles and Frank Zappa have meant for the people during their musical career? What was their cultural legacy? The Beatles are generally considered to be the best band in the history of popular music. This is mainly due to the influence they had on other bands and musicians all over the world such as Billy Joel, Nirvana, Oasis and many other. Knapp states that memorable messages have three different qualities that make a good memorable message. To start, (Knapp et al., 1981) states that First, memorable messages often come from someone who is older and of higher status, Most campaigns will use a spokesperson who is well known to the public; an example of this is a celebrity putting their name towards a cause. These spokespeople are often the campaign s biggest supporters both financially and motivational. (Miles A, et. al., 2001) describes that research into adult interventions shows that those who take part in mass media health campaigns are women from higher socioeconomic groups who are already engaging in better health practices. Second, memorable messages are often brief oral injunctions that prescribe rules of conduct for solving a personal problem, (Knapp et al., 1981). These would be more explicit directives, such as Exercise more and You should eat smaller portions, such as. • 26. Pros And Cons Of Recidivism Rates As of the end of 2015, there were 1,526,800 prisoners in the United States being held in state or federal correctional facilities. Every year, thousands of people are released from jail or prison. Most people who are incarcerated today will eventually be released. Most of these individuals return to a life of freedom without the skills they need to survive. Recidivism rates suggest that many of these individuals will re offend within six months of release, and most will reoffend within three years. This is not because they re bad people; it s because they are trying to thrive in a system that sets them up to fail. Given grim post release arrest rates, it s hard to understand why our government is not doing more to help those transitioning from incarceration to life on the outside. It doesn t make sense for taxpayer dollars to go towards incarcerating people over and over it seems that the money could be better spent improving rehabilitation programs for inmates. Increased funding for programs aimed at helping former inmates transition to life on the outside would likely lead to better outcomes for those individuals, fewer crimes being committed, and lower recidivism rates. • 29. Class Between Class And Class Essay Economic class division in the United States is simultaneously one of the most visible and invisible issues facing this nation today. Unlike issues that many passionate individuals aren t afraid to voice their opinions on such as racism, sexism, climate change, and marriage equality, the issue of class divide is like the elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about or address. As Bell Hooks puts it, author of Where We Stand: Class Matters, Racism and sexism can be exploited in the interests of class power. Yet no one wants to talk about class. (Hooks 7) The fact that discussions of class and class divide have become such a taboo in the United States is truly disappointing. Class, more than race or gender, is the single biggest factor in determining someone s success. Therefor, it should go without saying that discussions and open dialog about class are crucial in this society in order to advances its citizens and promote success with as many people as possible. It wasn t always like this. There was indeed a time in our history when class was talked about, a time when the poor were cared for, not seen as second class citizens or a taboo. David Hilfiker describes an earlier time in our history as a nation when it was just assumed that a physician would care for the poor. • 34. Increase In Minimum Wage The minimum wage is a metric which dictates the minimum cost that low wage labor has on a firm (Lopresti and Mumford 2016). Wages are a cost, but may conversely be understood as an incentive for employees. The minimum wage determines the quality of work which is supplied to employers. An increase in the minimum wage improves wage growth for workers, increases the supply of workers, and creates a competitive environment which allocates jobs to the most qualified workers, thereby increasing efficiency and quality in the market. First, the minimum wage sets a common standard for how employers determine pay for low wage workers. Lopresti and Mumford (2016) state that an increase in the minimum wage less than 5% has a negative impact on wages for low income workers; a minimum wage increase greater than 20% showed significant improvement in the wage growth of the same group. Everybody is subjective; we are all to an extent shaped by what is around us. The selected works mark turning points in the writing of the life of Cook, and each of them is considered as an important work within the field of Cook studies. They all display certain characteristics and carry certain discourses that mark them as also being evocative of their respective time periods. Cook scholars have often tried to prove or disprove certain facts, striven to edit and correct details or attempted to replicate and summarize the total available information. All of this is part of a wider discourse, an exploration of which is helpful in interpreting the backdrop surrounding Captain James Cook. It seems only logical to start with the very first biography, although several works penned by Cook s colleagues dealing with his character had appeared before this, most notably that of Johann Reinhold Forster, naturalist on board the second voyage, in 1778. This first biographical work, The Life of Captain James Cook, was written by the biographer and Non conformist Reverend Andrew Kippis, a member of The Royal Society and The Society of Antiquaries, and appeared 9 years after Cook s death in 1788.
