Soda In The Outsiders
To start, I chose to write about Soda in S. E. Hinton s novel, The Outsiders, because he is the character
that seems to pull the Curtis family together. In addition, his attitude towards his share in life inspired
me. Even though Soda grew up with so little, he still enjoys life and what he has. In fact, another
reason I chose Soda is because I can relate to some of his many traits. A few of them being
adventurous and outgoing. Soda s free spirited, understanding, and dependable characteristics attribute
to his gang and brother s attitudes and feelings. To begin with, out of all of the gang, Soda is the most
free spirited. Soda is described as a person who lives in the moment and enjoys life. Ponyboy said

Reflection Paper About Self
Out of all of the topics that we went over in over the course of the Sister to Sister class, the one that
resonated with and still resonates with me the most would have to be the theme of self. This is simply
because you cannot even begin to form a sense of community or delve into higher education
successfully without a keen awareness of self. This phenomenon is stated beautifully with, an ongoing
commitment to developing the self is paramount to the establishment of an identity that is centered
and grounded (King, T. C., Ferguson, S. A 2). The ongoing aspects of this are stressed because as
people, we are continuously changing, meaning that we need to be constantly in tune with our self and
making sure that we are going about life in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I have felt myself being the token friend speaking out about all things controversial in groups of white
friends, I have made myself seem more or less black depending on the situation, I have silenced
myself in classrooms, and I have sighed in relief in circles of my black friends. I read an article that I
saw on Twitter basically detailing a woman s experience as a black woman attending a PWI, and I
could relate to it all. It spoke about white people being so privileged that they do not move out of the
way for or hold doors open for black women, and it is true. We accept our mistreatment on campus to
an extent and have the mutual understanding that we will receive that college degree, and use to better
ourselves and our people with or without the school s support but of course, going about our college
education like this has adverse effects (McKinney 2016). On a campus where only four percent of the
population looks like you, I find it nearly impossible to not shift myself at least a little bit because I
often feel uncomfortable. We are micro aggressed daily and are expected to have that not affect us; we
are supposed to remain strong, which brings me to the issues with the idea of the black superwoman. I
had never seen the superwoman archetype as an issue previously; I thought it was beautiful,
empowering, and showed us just how strong that we can be. The issue with this though lies in the fact

Organizational Changes Essay
Organizational Changes Organizational changes take place when the force field that counterbalances
change is overcome. Different power base utilization facilitates these types of changes. Change could
be a topic in and by itself but we have chosen to incorporate the use of different power bases and their
effects on change. Power, in organizational change, is having the potential ability to influence
behavior, to change the course of events, to overcome resistance, and to get people to do things that
they would not otherwise do.(1) Understanding when to use a particular type of power base can ease

The follower s would need to be inspired and convinced that all efforts that are to be put forth are

stage was further broken down after the initial introduction of the three stages; commonly referred to
as the eight stage model when the additional steps are included. After the changes are implemented it
has to be institutionalized into the culture to prevent regression into the old ways. Since this model
was covered in the text, I will generalize the other models and then integrate the power bases into a
few of them. Lewin s Change Model.gif (6660 bytes) The Gap Model (3) is used when a clear mental
picture exists of what is desired to happen. It has two stages: one is the present state and the second is
the future desired state. The strategy that is to be determined to attain the future state is laid out with
the understanding that resistance will be encountered. If the change is to be implemented with
minimal resistance then the coercive power, information power, and expert power bases are best. The

Teachers Have The Greatest Influence On Student Achievement
Undoubtedly, teachers have the greatest influence on student achievement (Hanushek, 2014, p. 274;
Harris, 2014, p. 771). Considering that students spend that largest portion of their day with a teacher, it
is easy to assume that teachers are the sole persons responsible for students academic and social
development. However, Hanushek (2014), contends that teachers alone are not responsible for student
achievement. There are several education inputs that contribute to the outcome, or student
achievement, as often measured by test scores; education inputs include teacher quality, school
resources, and family attributes (Hanushek, 2014, p. 273). Contrary to the education input identified
by Hanushek, the Coleman Report which introduced the concept of education production functions
concluded that school, as an input, did not matter (Hanushek, 1979, p. 352; Hanushek, 2014, p. 273).
Nevertheless, as the need to measure teacher effectiveness grows, researchers, policy makers, and
educational leaders are driven to seek out methods that objectively measure teacher effectiveness
while eliminating other outside factors that influence student achievement. Value Added Model
(VAM) measures have become one of the latest methods to measure teacher effectiveness. While these
measures are not completely valid or reliable, they still provide an insight into teacher quality and how
effective a teacher is at educating students (Harris, 2014, p. 774 5). Measuring teacher quality and

Identity Identities, Identity, Identities And Identities
In everyday talk to reach personal aspects of who they are, as well as group level identifications,
people implement many different practices in speech to help support these identities. Identities are
important because it influence how a communication interact, and shape how they communicate
Category approaches treat identities as stable aspects of persons that shape how they communicate
(Tracy Robles, 2013, p 20).
As we have learned there are three main identities that a person tends to present during a
communication situation. They are master identities, interactional identities and personal identities.

The person I select is the father, who filmed the entire conversation. I find him interesting because he
did not talk much but at the end the father successfully left with his son without being enforce by
police. The two identities on the father I would like to analyse here is a father finished visitation and
filming and a father covering his son . These two identities are conflict because the father was trying
to keep out of the affair and just film anything might happen, but also wants to help his son. For
convenience lets call the first identities father cameramen and second identities father daddy . I will
select six discourse practices that indicate how two identities seems to be in tension with each other.
First three discourse practices indicate father cameramen identities.
IDENTITY : Father who finished visitation and filming
DISCOURSE PRACTICE 1: Disclaiming
EXAMPLE: He s not being restrained by me. I m just filming, that s all I m doing.
Disclaiming are verbal devices to deflect others from assigning negative or inappropriate personal
identities to self. They are conversational moves that are done at the time before a potentially
problematic utterance. Disclaiming: Also disclaimers; Face threatening speech act that seeks to deflect
potential criticism (Tracy Robles, 2013, p 285). Here the father wants to show that he was not the

Hugo s Restaurant Style
When I began writing this blog post, I thought that the menu of Hugo s would be the draw for people.
Looking to have a great meal is one thing I can agree with Houston about on many levels and Hugo s
has got some really fun, interesting, delicious food. Once I even had crickets there. And they were
good. Like, really good.
But adventuresome eating isn t even the most interesting thing about Hugo s, which serves authentic
Mexican regional cuisine from many of Mexico s numerous cultural variants. Executive Chef Hugo
Ortega (the Hugo in Hugo s) considers authentic Mexican cooking to be a world class cuisine that has
remained virtually unchanged by the outside world. He seeks to find the subtle flavors of each area
and integrate them into his technically distinguished menu, bringing a reverent tone to this beautiful
homage to Mexican diversity. However, despite the exceptional cuisine, despite the historic, beautiful
building, despite even your love of a good story about me eating strange foods, nothing trumps the
intrigue of a great story: Tracy Vaught and Hugo Ortega are plenty of story to tell.
Tracy is an idiosyncratic restaurant owner, perhaps owing to her background not in restaurants but in
geology. Looking for a career change from the isolating business of rock analysis, Tracy considered a

Analysis Of The Short Stories Lady With A Pet Dog
Hope Crenshaw
Dr. Schott
English 102
September 13,2015 Lady with the Pet Dog The short stories Lady with the Pet Dog written by Chekov
and Lady with a Pet Dog written by Oates demonstrate the relationship between a young woman,
Anna , and her lover. The authors use two different points of view as well as Anna s behaviors,
motives and feelings in an attempt to convey a sense of understanding. Neither Chekove nor Oates
evoke a sense of sympathy towards Anna as she struggles to justify her actions. Firstly, Anna uses her
unsatisfactory marriage to justify her affair. In Chekhov uses my husband may be a good, honest man,
but he is a flunkey! (Chekov 227) to indicate that Anna has an estranged marriage. Although Anna has
not obtained an ideal marriage, she shows that she does indeed care about her husband ... and begging
his wife to return home as soon as possible. Anna Sergeyevna made haste to go (Chekov 228). Chekov
uses the fact that Anna rushes home in order to show that she still loves her husband. After all, if she
did not, she would not have rushed home. Although Oates writes from Anna s point of view, the author
still shows similarities with Chekhov s version. I love you, her husband said fiercely, angrily. She shut
her eyes and thought of that other man. (Oates 239). In

Swimming Monologue
I wake up barely dawn, when the early morning is still unpleasantly chilly and most of my peers are
comfortably cuddled in their blankets. I, on the other hand, will dive into the pool. My weary limbs

training, and racing for the next two and a half hour; everyday, until my arms are too tired to lift my
aching body out of the pool. Some days were easy. I had motivation and full of energy. Others, were

The Niagara Escarpment Ava Is An Ideal Area For Grape Growing
Introduction
The Niagara Escarpment AVA is a relatively new viticulture designated area. The area received the
designation in 2005 and is now one of the fastest growing wine regions in New York State. This AVA
is comprised of a portion of the Niagara Escarpment landform that runs from New York State through
Canada into Wisconsin. (Fig. A) The escarpment has formed over time due to erosion of the rock
layers. The top rock layer, dolomitic limestone, is more weather resistant causing it to erode slower
and creating the escarpment landform. Fig. A
The escarpment is an ideal area for grape growing, as well as other fruits, due to the microclimate
created by the combination of the escarpment and Lake Ontario. Those growing areas that are near the
lake experience weather that is slightly moderated by the presence of the lake waters. Those that are
contained on the escarpment receive a moderated weather pattern due to the escarpments form. The
warm air trapped by the escarpment helps to provide those vineyards with a longer growing season
and protection from harsh winter freezing and spring or fall frost.
The Niagara Wine Trail is currently in a period of growth. In the last few months several new wineries
have been added to the trail and the trail has begun its expansion towards Rochester. Along with this
growth the trail has continued to increase its number of visitors. Along with local customers the trail
also sees many visitors from Canada, Rochester, Finger Lakes area,

Entropy Research Paper
Entropy and Energy Density in A Finite and Infinite Dimensional Universe
Entropy, or disorder, is increasing in the universe and aims to do so until it reaches its maximum limit
or capacity [1]. Energy density, on the other hand, is the amount of energy stored per a given volume
of space [2]. While the total amount of energy in the universe remains constant [3], energy density
decreases as the universe continues to expand.
In an infinite dimensional universe, meaning the universe will continue to expand indefinitely in all
directions, entropy will continue to increase until it eventually reaches its maximum. When this
happens, all energy would have been transformed into the same type of energy and dispersed equally
throughout the whole universe. This would happen because if entropy has reached its maximum limit,
then everything would have already been disordered to its maximum limit. At this point, the whole
universe would then be in equilibrium: the Heat Death of the Universe [4]. Another possible outcome
is that, as the universe is expanding indefinitely, then entropy will also increase indefinitely and will
not be able to reach its maximum limit.
On the other hand, in a finite dimensional universe, meaning the universe will continue to expand only
until a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, once the universe reaches the maximum limit of its expansion, the energy density of the
universe will reach its minimum in the finite dimensional universe, as there will no longer be space for
the universe to expand. At this time, there will be the Big Crunch. During the Big Crunch, the energy
density of the universe will begin to increase again as the volume of the universe continues to decrease
until it reaches the point where it condenses back into a singularity, such as what it was before the Big
Bang. Once it has achieved singularity, that is also where the energy density of the universe will be at

Assessment of core competencies for Verizon Corp.
Executive Summary
In order to identify Verizon s core competencies, a SWOT and Five Forces analysis was performed.
The SWOT analysis showed internal strengths in technology diversification, a large and talented
employee resource pool, and an expansive network footprint. Internal weaknesses were revealed that
centered on post merger issues such as corporate culture issues, impending workforce retirements, and
a lack of systems or process consolidation. External opportunities include the potential to further
capitalize on incumbent status, diverse markets, long distance, and brand identity. Finally, external
threats include government regulation, substitution, and a weak economy.

Support systems Many support systems in the former Bell Atlantic, Nynex, and GTE territories have
yet to be consolidated. This leads to inefficient resource allocation that does not provided the

Processes In many ways, Verizon is still three companies (Bell Atlantic, Nynex, and GTE). Although
Verizon has consolidated and standardized some of their processes, there is still a lot of room for
improvement.

§ Incumbent status In most areas, Verizon has been the incumbent local exchange carrier (ILEC) for
half a century. For decades, Verizon did not have to contend with competition of any kind. This has
given Verizon a solid foothold on the industry that new competitive local exchange carriers (CLEC)

§ Diverse markets Telecommunications markets can local, regional, or global. Furthermore, customer
can include residential, business, and government markets.
§ Long distance Due to regulatory restrictions, Verizon was once not allowed to offer long distance
services in the former Bell Atlantic territories. These restrictions have been eased and Verizon has

Analysis of Results In order to meet the study objectives, in addition to the case study, a semi
structured interview was conducted using non random sampling. As respondents of the interview had
to have particular characteristics such as ability to value property and knowledge about the property
market, estate agents were contacted. A total of 7 interviews were conducted with estate agents in the
West Hampstead/Kilburn area. The interviews lasted approximately 10 minutes. The participants were

experience of being an estate agent. As stated previously, recording the interviews was not allowed
due to confidentiality reasons therefore there might be a slight bias in the responses as they were

answer by placing it into a category. Once the categories were established they were placed into a

c) The output I received from dir /O was the same I received when I used the dir /L command. One of

d) dir (No file or subfolder was found during the execution of the command. I believe the reason to
this is that the OS blocks any access to that folder. If files or subfolders are modified the OS could

the reasons why is that absolute path and relative path are invalid commands. There has to be another
way to navigate through absolute and relative paths than with the commands used in this exercise.
Also, this exercise is misleading because the result of a command depends of the location of the
current directory and the directory to begin from is not specified in the instructions. Also, I don t need
a command to know what the absolute and relative paths are in any case given. In number 1 for

in the Jammu and Kashmir State and its varied repercussions. For the first time the labourers stirred in
an open revolt against the oppressive behaviour of the officials and protested against the working
conditions of the factory. This paper is an endeavour to depict the labour unrest due to genre glitches
of labourers like poverty, backwardness, illiteracy, insufficiency of wages, corruption of the officials
and oppression of the scrutinizing staff. The article enumerates the significance of the agitation, modes
of protests, meetings, petitions, grievances and tussle for their rights which equip grounds for other
labour movements in the state. The Muslim organisation inside and outside the state support and

class consciousness among the labourers had been established which set an example for the
downtrodden masses to fight for their rights. The agitation was an eruption against the existing
economic organisation of the state and their anguish against the princely rule of the state. Key words:

How Did Andrew Jackson Affect The Economy
Andrew Jackson was the seventh President of the United States from 1829 1837. Jackson was
popularized as general in the War of 1812 and defeated the British troops at New Orleans in 1815.
During his presidency, he opposed the Bank of America, fought the rights of individual states, and
increased presidential authority. Jackson won over Southerners with his support of State s rights,
Westerners with his promise to build roads and canals and end the Second National Bank, and
Northerners, since he would limit the Federal government s role in the economy. His voters were
common people such as small farmers and frontier settlers.

Effects Of Dutch Colonization On Indonesia
The age of exploration brought the Netherlands to colonize Indonesia for many decades. When the
Dutch first arrived in Indonesia, they made slow advances to different parts of Indonesia. At the time,
Indonesia was well known as the spice islands that many countries wanted to colonize. Because Dutch
colonization in Indonesia lasted a long time, it impacted Indonesia greatly and left many short and
long term effects. Although the Dutch impacted Indonesia greatly in many different ways, they left an
exceptional amount of marks in Indonesia s economy, politics, and religion at the time of their
colonization. The VOC took advantage of Indonesia s rich land which was suitable for the growth of

The Dutch created new systems, rules, and held power and control over the people of Indonesia. They
formed single organizations and traded across large areas before eventually becoming the main
political figure in the archipelago and replaced existing Indonesian politics. Rules and systems that
had been previously used by Indonesia were diminished and quickly taken over and changed by the
Dutch. The cultivation (culture) system was a system that impacted the Dutch and Indonesia
politically and economically for a long period of time. The Dutch would have each village submit a set
amount of resources as rent that benefitted them but was torture for Indonesians (encyclopedia
Britannica). Though the VOC had made positive political advances in Indonesia, their systems and
politics weren t effective and was often inhumane for the Indonesians. Their culture system was
eventually rioted against and diminished. The rejection of the cultivation system was both for humane
and for economic motives. ; the culture system was changed in 1870 and created a new period, led by
the Dutch crown instead of the VOC (Indonesia Investments). Political choices made by the VOC
weren t the best and while it did reap good results, they often fell into failure. This goes to show how
inefficient the VOC could be for long term results, but efficient for short term results. Politics weren t

Analysis Of Elizabeth Barrett Browning s The Battle Of...
Elizabeth Barrett Browning was born on March 6, 1806, at Coxhoe Hall, Durham, England, daughter
Mary Graham and Edward Moulton Barrett. They made their wealth from a Jamaican sugar plantation.
Elizabeth was the oldest of eleven siblings. She was educated at home which leads her to write at a
very young age. By the age of fourteen her very first book was published, The Battle of Marathon,
which her father released privately. Browning had many of her works published but in eighteen forty
four her collection titled Poems was published. These poems caught the attention of English poet
Robert Browning. Robert wrote to Elizabeth a letter, they both exchanged numerous letters over the
following months, this lead to their elopement in eighteen forty six. On eighteen fifty, she released
Sonnets from the Portuguese, it is a collection of forty four love sonnets that became one of the
greatest sequences of sonnets in history. The collection was dedicated to her loving husband and was
also written in secret during their courtship. Aurora Leigh was published in eighteen fifty six, this was
her longest work, this was a blank verse novel and poem. Elizabeth Barrett Browning died on June
twenty nine, eighteen sixty one in Florence at the age of fifty five. This essay will reveal the theme of
feminism through the exploration of key forms of Browning, which include: the inner battle resulting

The pike and its danger is highlighted with Killers from the egg explicitly suggests that the pike was
born to be a killer and is something to be feared as it is very dangerous, which also further supports its
power over every other creature in that lake. As it is said to be a killer from the egg it may refer that
even the youngest things in nature may be dangerous and that this should not be played with, but
rather respected because of its power and how dangerous it can be with it. The snake is also used as an
example to show the power of nature. he was gone into the grass that hid his prey projects the power
of the snake as the word prey displays that this snake is a predator that is determined to hunt down its
prey. The fact that the prey is not mentioned also amplifies its danger as this snake may pose a threat
on anyone, no matter the size, like how nature is so dangerous that it can pose a threat on any one.
Judith Wright makes it clear that nature is strong enough to impose a threat on humans so that means
that we should respect nature for what it can do to us, and a snake is used as a metaphor to represents

Chaos In The Outsiders, By S. E. Hinton
Outsiders Connection In the book, The Outsiders, the author, S.E Hinton ingrains that social class
causes chaos. Ponyboy leaves home enraged and stunned after his brother Darry slaps him across the
face. Ponyboy meets up with his friend Johnny with a plan to run away. The plan falls through and the
two end up at the park face to face with the Socs the same Socs that jumped Johnny. In a point to save
Ponyboy from death Johnny kills Bob, one of the main Socs of the group. While Ponyboy stares at
Bob, he thinks , Bob, the handsome Soc, was lying there in the moonlight, doubled up and still. A dark
pool was growing from him, spreading slowly over the blue white cement (56). In this passage, S.E
Hinton supports the idea that social class causes chaos. Since Johnny and Ponyboy are in a lower
social class than the Socs, the Socs think that they can take advantage of the greasers by jumping them
and harming them. Johnny and Pony have been Jumped before and this time when someone s life is on
the line it can cause a bad chain of events starting with Johnny killing Bob, the Soc. Once again, S.E
Hinton establishes that social class causes chaos in one s life. Johnny and Pony come home after ...

not as wealthy as the Socs and do not live in a neighborhood as nice, the reporters are lead to believe
that they are hoods. People that are not capable of doing anything good for the world, just bad. So,
when Johnny and Ponyboy commit a heroic act everyone is stunned because they did not think that
hoods could do good. That is is what lead them to the conclusion that Johnny and Ponyboy, turned
heroes. Which is chaotic for Johnny and Ponyboy because people do not understand that not all
greasers are bad they just did not have a chance to show the good in

Suffering In Tolstoy s The Death Of Ivan Ilych
In the Death of Ivan Ilych you learn a lot about people. Ivan Ilych was an ordinary person; he had a
family, bridge set and plenty of friends. Yet when he becomes stricken with a terminal illness
everything seems to disappear. The only person that he finds comfort in toward the end of his life is
his butler. I believe that there are three themes that are more prevalent than the others. The first of
those themes is suffering, the second is modernization and the final theme is isolation. In Tolstoys
novella suffering is a major influence on the way that the novella ends. The one constant in The Death
of Ivan Ilych, is suffering. When Ilych gets a strange disease, his body slowly starts going to pieces
and physical pain replaces his pleasant life. The author uses Ivan s death to show how much suffering
has gone beyond the physical. Ivan suffers from fear, hopelessness, and a sense of ... Show more

Throughout the novella the doctors appear as arrogant and useless. By the end of the story s, it s pretty
clear that they have not given the dying Ivan Ilych any medical help. If anything, they ve only made
his situation worse. Through the experience of Ivan Ilych with his doctors, Tolstoy suggests that
modern medicine is a bad thing and is showing society s refusal to come to terms with death. Ivan
Ilych s experience of death in the Death of Ivan Ilych is progressed by a growing sense of isolation.
His suffering and fear of death have the effect of completely cutting him off from the world around
him. For his friends, colleagues, and family members, life goes on just as before. Ivan is dissapointed
when he discovers that none of them seem to understand or care about what he s experiencing. He has
to face his fears and agonies alone, without comfort from anyone except a servant, the one person who
pities him. Ivan Ilych finds solace from the person he never thought he would have, a butler of

Essay On Restoration Of The Everglades
Restoration of Florida s Everglades The Everglades in South Florida, home of 36 such endangered
species such as the American Crocodile and the Florida Panther, slowly continues to diminish.
According to the website of the National Wildlife Refuge Association (NWRA), the Everglades played
a crucial role in the lives of Florida s human residents ( Everglades ). Since the 1980s, the government
established efforts to protect wildlife and vegetation. Organization groups continue planning on
restoring the most well known wetland on Florida soil. In other words, the development of urban
communities and agriculture causes a mass increase in pollution and flood watches. The ongoing
conservation of the Everglades preserves limited water quality, protect wildlife, and prevent urban
development. Recently, the heap of pollution caused a massive drainage in the Everglades water
quality. Tramontana and Johnson (2003) reported that much of Florida s early development was based
upon draining and removing excess water from wetlands... and it was thought if drained, the land
could be put to better use (Human Development section, para. 2). Pollution destroys the cleanliness of
the wetland leading to a decrease in restoration. Millions amount of cash produced to repair water
quality leads to the consequences of continuous flow of freshwater. ... Show more content on

How Did The Transcontinental Railroad Affect The Economy
The transcontinental railroad was an 1,912 mile railway system that spanned from Sacramento,
California to Omaha, Nebraska. It was built to connect the Atlantic to the Pacific Coast and was
constructed between 1863 to 1869. It revolutionized the settlement and economy of the west. It helped
the United State s in more ways than just benefiting the west. The transcontinental railroad
transformed America by allowing faster transportation, faster settlement, and an increase in trade and
the economy.
Firstly, the transcontinental railroad helped our trade and economy. The western economy was largely
based on farming and mining which could have played a large factor in the American economy (Pohn

The construction of railroads fueled to a more efficient settlement west. Many of America s major
historical events such as the California Gold Rush, Homestead Act, and overall settlement west all had
something in common. They were aided by the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. With the
west now being part of the United States economy, many people saw this as an opportunity to move
and make money. As a result, many relocated west looking for a new beginning or to strike rich and
towns and cities started sprouting along the railways (Transportation History 1800 1900). In 1848,
gold was discovered in California starting the California Gold Rush (Huntington). Thousands of
people across the entire world started traveling to California hoping to become wealthy. The problem
was, out of the thousands that went to California, many of them died along the journey. They needed a
fast and safe way to get there. After the completion of the Transcontinental Railway, traveling became
considerably quicker and safer. Another way these railways aided the westward expansion was
through the Homestead Act of 1862 (Huntington). The United State s Homestead Act offered a free
160 acre lots in the unsettled west. (Huntington). There were some requirements such as having to file
a claim, live on the land and also making upgrades to it whether it be by building or dwelling.
(Huntington). But, many settlers and merchants needed a faster, more cheap way to get there. In 1869,
the Transcontinental Railway was completed greatly assisted in America s westward

The Apartheid Of Apartheid And Apartheid
Colonial inheritance has had a serious effect on all Africans lives and has irreversibly changed the
continent and its people forever. The impact of apartheid is evident when analyzing Mxolisi and
Nelson Mandela s lives. Both men were exposed to similar oppressive environments as they lived in
South Africa during apartheid, though their stories show generational differences. Mandela was an
activist early in the apartheid regime and then spent a significant period of his life in jail until the end
of the regime as he took part in reassessment of apartheid and negotiations. Mxolisi was born and
raised during Apartheid and much of his experiences growing up took place while Mandela was in jail.
These two men were both victims of colonial inheritance and apartheid, which lead them to extreme
measures as they acted in protest of an oppressive government with the hope that they might gain back
power, rights, and freedom for themselves and the South African people. Decolonization was
sweeping across the African continent during the 1950 s and during this time in South Africa,
apartheid was being solidified by a white minority government. Early anti apartheid struggles were
predominantly non violent until the 1960 Sharpeville incident when police opened fire on an unarmed
group of demonstrators (Reid 292). Activists and groups such as the African National Congress (ANC)
became more violent because the government in charge was using violent means to control them and

research on owning my own daycare, I have little experience about what it would be like to be the

Determination of Specific Heat
Determination of specific heat
Capacity of a solid by electrical method
Introduction
Thermal conductivity heat is transferred as a consequence of temperature difference between 2 bodies,
heat energy passes form a hotter to the colder body. Specific heat capacity is the amount of heat
energy required in joules to raise 1kg of a substance by 1 degree Celsius, different substances absorb
heat energy at different rates not all substances require the same amount of heat energy to increase the
internal temperature of a substance this depends on the mass and the material it s self. To demonstrate
specific heat capacity of a solid an experiment was carried out using 1kg aluminium mass and 1kg
copper mass heat was conducted to the masses by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reason for this is that copper s molecules are more densely packed and so it is a good conductor of
heat, and when 1 kg of each substance are compared visually it is easily seen that 1kg of copper mass
is far smaller than 1kg of aluminium mass. Aluminium is more efficient at radiating or dispersing heat
as it is less dense which also makes it a lighter material.
Overall this experiment has successfully reached its objectives however some errors have occurred as
shown in the experimental errors where the experimental values do not match the actual values of the
materials this could be caused by heat loss through the material which could be reduced with better
insulation of the material. Further error could have been avoided in the first experiment by letting the
heating element reach its maximum output before inserting it into the aluminium block as the warm up
time is not taken into consideration in the first experiment; this was not a factor in the second
experiment as the heating element was immediately placed into the copper block and was at its
maximum

Discovery of HeLa Cells
It is safe to say that without the discovery of HeLa cells in 1951, today s world would be vastly
different. HeLa cells have left a greater mark on the world than ever dreamed possible. These
immortal cells were vital to the development of the polio vaccine, cloning, uncovering microscopic
secrets of viruses and cancer, in vitro fertilization and gene mapping. They have been everywhere:
labs, animals, people, even the moon. They assisted with the development of the atom bomb and were

Forensic Entomology
Forensic entomology is using insect biology to determine specific aspects of a crime. It can be used to
determine time of death, whether or not a body has been moved, and also if the victim had been

The third type includes omnivorous insects also including specific types of ants, wasps, and some
beetles. They feed on the other insects as well as the body. Wasps will eat other adult flies, and also
feed on the fluids from the body. By eating the adult flies it can disrupt decaying for up to a day. The
last species are hunting spiders. They make webs in and around the body to catch insects. The body
provides an ideal habitat for the spiders to catch their prey. Although these are the insects that use the
body as a source of food they are not the only insects that gain food from the body. There are also soil
dwellers that obtain food from the fluids from the body that seep into the ground. They are usually
mites, springtails, roundworms, and nematodes. The fluids that seep into the soil usually stay there for
several years after the death.
By determining what insects are on the body, and what stage of development they are in can help
determine postmortem intervals, especially in the cases of flies. There are a few factors that do play
into delaying or speeding up the decaying process with insects. A few aspects that will delay insect
activity are burying a body which also delays decomposition, covering the corpse especially tightly,
being in the water, cold weather, and the height of the body from the ground, for example in a
hanging. Only insects that can fly can reach the body, so it delays activity, but insects do feed off of

Switching Power In Oroonoko, By Aphra Behn
Once power is given it cannot be taken away that is the way everyone thinks right that if the status is
higher up it cannot be knocked down. Wrong. Just as quickly power is given it can be taken away even
faster. One narrative I will discuss in this essay is Oroonoko by Aphra Behn. This narrative could be
viewed in many different ways. One way it can be seen is as a biography, another is a memoir, but it
can also be seen as a travel narrative. In this essay I will touch base on the topics of switching power.
By switching power I mean how different individual s power fluctuates within situations in the novel.
Aphra Behn and Oroonoko are able to exceed the way they are viewed. Behn is both the narrator and
the author and Oroonoko is the prince as well as a slave. Behn is able to be identified as not only
powerful, but also as the sideline or less important. All the while Oronooko is the prince and also a

Aphra Behn shows how power is switched in different ways. Behn and Oroonoko s power fluctuates
making the narrative interesting and

When the first ceremony took place, a couple was given a male newchild named Caleb as a

occurred, which is murmuring the name throughout the whole day, less often, quieter, so that the child

Nicole knew from the start what Rosemary s intentions were she also knows that Dick feels something
towards Rosemary too. She s very attractive, an infant , [but] she s very attractive (Fitzgerald 167).
Nicole kept repeating this to Dick Diver as if she wants Dick to confess something to her about
Rosemary and the affair they have going on. At this point in the book Nicole is changing. [Now] that
[she] has reached the point at which she no longer needs Dick. [He] is even more lost than ever.
Nicole tells Dick that things were never the same after Rosemary entered their lives (Becnel). In the
beginning of their marriage we notice that Nicole is very dependent of Dick Diver. She is Dick s other
half. At some point she finally lets him go and grows dependent of herself. She divorces Dick, and
marries Tommy. Dicks affairs and drinking become too much for [him] to live with, Nicole is rescued
by Tommy Barban, with whom [She] has an affair and marries (Smith 259). Alcohol took control of
Dick Diver s life. A small mistake that Dick makes causes his marriage to fall apart and Nicole s

Essay about Hedda Gabler
Hedda from the play, Hedda Gabler by Ibsen is greatly affected due to her background. Hedda s father
being a general led her to control issues later on in life. She felt weak and needed control over the
people in her life.
Hedda was born to a great, wonderful, highly regarded and respected general, General Gabler.
Because she was his daughter people would show great respect and loyalty towards her. She was used
to people listening and obeying her; she just loved having power over others. When Hedda and her
husband, George Tesman got back from their honeymoon George s aunt, MissTesman was telling the
maid how particular Hedda is after growing up as General Gablers Daughter, Well of course. General
Gabler s daughter. What a life she had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even on their honeymoon George spent most of the time gathering information for a book he planned
to write. George would also go out to parties all the time, for hours at a time and just leave Hedda at
home all by herself. Hedda wanted the praise and power that she got when she was a child and tried to
change George into her father. Although Hedda tried to gain control over her husband she failed.
Hedda tries to gain superiority over George s aunt, Aunt Julie. Aunt Julie is the person that raised
George. In a conversation George once had with his aunt he said, You, who ve been a father and
mother to me both. When Aunt Julie stopped by to welcome Hedda and George back from their
honeymoon Hedda talked lowly about Aunt Julie s hat which she picked out just to impress her
nephews new wife. When talking about the maid Hedda said, See there! She left her old hat lying on a
chair. Suppose someone came in and saw it. Hedda also refuses to addressed Aunt Tesman by her sir
name and not as if she was family. George once said If only you could bring yourself to speak to her
warmly, by her first name.
No no don t ask me to do that. I told you this once before. I ll try to call her aunt. That should be
enough.
By acting this way Hedda tried to return to the life she knew when she was with her father.
Another person Hedda try s to take control over is Thea. Thea is an old class mate back from high
school who Hedda used to

If your experience is different if you love Digg or Adsense, for example
then by all means, focus on the ideas you agree with or that make the most sense for you.
The problem is that for many of us who yearn to get paid for doing the work we love, Digg and
Adsense don t work. If you look at some of the most popular web sites, you can get the impression
that you need to write boiler plate articles, get high traffic spikes, and then post off topic, unattractive
ads from Google to be able to make money. I m here to give you the contrarian perspective on that,
along with a few other things.

279 Days to Overnight Success
In case you re in a big hurry, here s the abridged version of what I have to say:
If you want to, you can create your own full time career in social media (or otherwise greatly expand
your influence)
It takes more than 30 days or 12 steps to do this, but you can probably do it in one or two years
Unless you can regularly generate enormous levels of traffic, forget about advertising
Instead, ask your followers what they want and find a way to give it to them
If you want to learn more, just keep going. If this doesn t sound interesting to you, no problem. Go
and change the world in another important way.

Which Brand Of Popcorn Leaves The Least Amount Of Kernels
Which brand of popcorn leaves the least amount of kernels?
Which brand of popcorn leaves the least amount of kernels?
Have you ever wondered how popcorn kernels get left behind? Research by food scientist Bruce
Hamaker from Perdue University suggests that it is lack of moisture. Moisture helps the corn kernel
pop. You should store your popcorn in a cupboard where it is dry, never put your un popped popcorn
in the refrigerator because that will cause it to lose moisture. I am figuring out which brand of popcorn
leaves least amount of kernels.
Non buttery vs buttery
My research is that Pop Secret leaves less kernels.

Did you know that un popped kernels are able to pop three in the air?
Popcorn is a popular snack in Illinois and has been since 1958.
Did you know that even un popped little kernel can break your teeth?
Nebraska produces more popcorn than any other state with an estimated 250 million pounds per year.
There are three major components to popcorn kernels: the germ or Embryo, Endosperm and the
Pericarp this is the outer hull.
Did you know popcorn is high in protein and low in calories?
Popcorn is over 4,000 years old and in the old days they would pop it in hot sand. Yuck!
Popcorn has two shapes, butterfly and mushroom. The mushroom holds toppings better.

Selection And Justification Of The Optimum Marine Cable...
Selection and justification of the optimum marine cable route between Rathlin Island and Ballycastle
EGM 310
Matthew McKenna
Introduction.
Rathlin Island located just off the North coast of Northern Ireland (NI) has been selected as a suitable
location for the Government to place a new windfarm. As the Government tries to move away from
non renewable energy sources this proposal for the windfarm will provide electricity to the towns of
County Antrim. The Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) are concerned that the marine
cable route should have as little impact on the natural and cultural environments, this is because the
EU believes that the natural and cultural environments and the heritage they contain are an important
resource for economic growth and employment (European Commissions, 2016). As such have
assigned the task of identifying a suitable low impact route for the cable from Church Bay (Rathlin
Island) to Ballycastle (Co. Antrim).
To produce a marine cable that has a minimum impact on the natural and cultural environment the
NIEA has given several guidelines that need to be followed.
The cable must:
1. Be trenched and re filled at a depth of 2m, this means as much bedrock should be avoided as this
will be a costly and timely process.
2. Avoid all shipwrecks
3. Avoid all slopes that exceed angles of 40°
4. Avoid all mobile substrates exceeding mean spring flows of 50cm/s
Methodology
In order to identify and justify the optimum route for the marine

The Planning Function of Management
Most companies have a vision, mission statement, and a set of core values. These three things are
normally made up by a group of senior managers or a leadership team. Once these three things are
decided upon, the upper management or leadership team should deliver the information to the
management below them, so the important information is delivered to all levels of employees within
the company. After the these three things have been set, most companies will post their vision, mission
statement and core values somewhere for all employees to see. Often time s new employees are given
copies of these three things in orientation or on their first day of work. Coming up with the vision,
mission statement and core values are just one way that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Again, this is a way of planning that requires the participation of all levels of management.
Operational planning is used mostly by lower level or front line managers. These are the routine tasks
of scheduling, human resource tasks, and daily statistics which are looked at when planning for future
staffing and projects. Although these tasks are carried out by lower level management or supervisors,
they upper management still has a say in these tasks. The upper level management or leadership team
more than likely made those tasks as a part of the employees daily routine; so again, all hands of
management play a roll in the operational planning as well. Contingency planning tends to be the one
that is discussed the least. Contingency planning is very important in most companies, as this is where
the safety and disaster planning comes into play. These plans are made by all levels of management as
well as employees who are non managers. Each department knows its own needs when it comes to its
contingency plans, it is important to have all employees involved in the planning. For example, a fire
drill plan; all the employees know where the closest exit to their workspace is, and they can all agree
to find a common meeting place outside of the building. This is not a plan that has to be done by a
specific level of management. There has to be some management oversight, but all the department
employees need to be in

Literature Review On Nurse To-Patient Ratios
Literature Review The topic of appropriate nurse to patient ratios has been a highly researched subject
for over a decade. Many researchers approach this topic by focusing on the effect that high nurse to
patient ratios have on patient outcomes often called nurse specific indicators . The following includes
a summary of five recent studies conducted on the cause and effect relationship between high nurse to
patient ratios and the increased occurrence of nurse specific indicators (e.g. urinary tract infection,
patient falls, central line associated blood stream infections, etc). California passed Assembly Bill 394,
making them the first state to pass a law that required hospitals to limit the amount of patients
included in a nurse s workload. The California Assembly Bill 394 (AB394) was put into effect on
January 1, 2004. In 2012 a study was conducted to determine if mandated nurse to patient ratios
actually had a positive impact on patient outcomes. This study examined medical/surgical units in
California hospitals. The data used to compare outcomes before and after passing AB394 was from the
year 2000 2002 for the before data. The after data was from the years 2005 2006 (Cook, Gaynor,
Stephens, Taylor, 2012). Shockingly, the data compared before and after the implementation of AB394
showed only a slight decrease in adverse patient outcomes. One patient outcome specifically
mentioned was hospital acquired pressure ulcers. The occurrence rate of hospital acquired

  • 2. Soda In The Outsiders To start, I chose to write about Soda in S. E. Hinton s novel, The Outsiders, because he is the character that seems to pull the Curtis family together. In addition, his attitude towards his share in life inspired me. Even though Soda grew up with so little, he still enjoys life and what he has. In fact, another reason I chose Soda is because I can relate to some of his many traits. A few of them being adventurous and outgoing. Soda s free spirited, understanding, and dependable characteristics attribute to his gang and brother s attitudes and feelings. To begin with, out of all of the gang, Soda is the most free spirited. • 3. Reflection Paper About Self Out of all of the topics that we went over in over the course of the Sister to Sister class, the one that resonated with and still resonates with me the most would have to be the theme of self. This is simply because you cannot even begin to form a sense of community or delve into higher education successfully without a keen awareness of self. This phenomenon is stated beautifully with, an ongoing commitment to developing the self is paramount to the establishment of an identity that is centered and grounded (King, T. C., Ferguson, S. A 2). The ongoing aspects of this are stressed because as people, we are continuously changing, meaning that we need to be constantly in tune with our self and making sure that we are going about life in ... I have felt myself being the token friend speaking out about all things controversial in groups of white friends, I have made myself seem more or less black depending on the situation, I have silenced myself in classrooms, and I have sighed in relief in circles of my black friends. I read an article that I saw on Twitter basically detailing a woman s experience as a black woman attending a PWI, and I could relate to it all. It spoke about white people being so privileged that they do not move out of the way for or hold doors open for black women, and it is true. We accept our mistreatment on campus to an extent and have the mutual understanding that we will receive that college degree, and use to better ourselves and our people with or without the school s support but of course, going about our college education like this has adverse effects (McKinney 2016). On a campus where only four percent of the population looks like you, I find it nearly impossible to not shift myself at least a little bit because I often feel uncomfortable. We are micro aggressed daily and are expected to have that not affect us; we are supposed to remain strong, which brings me to the issues with the idea of the black superwoman. I had never seen the superwoman archetype as an issue previously; I thought it was beautiful, empowering, and showed us just how strong that we can be. The issue with this though lies in the fact ... Different power base utilization facilitates these types of changes. Change could be a topic in and by itself but we have chosen to incorporate the use of different power bases and their effects on change. • 5. Teachers Have The Greatest Influence On Student Achievement Undoubtedly, teachers have the greatest influence on student achievement (Hanushek, 2014, p. 274; Harris, 2014, p. 771). Considering that students spend that largest portion of their day with a teacher, it is easy to assume that teachers are the sole persons responsible for students academic and social development. However, Hanushek (2014), contends that teachers alone are not responsible for student achievement. There are several education inputs that contribute to the outcome, or student achievement, as often measured by test scores; education inputs include teacher quality, school resources, and family attributes (Hanushek, 2014, p. 273). Contrary to the education input identified by Hanushek, the Coleman Report which introduced the concept of education production functions concluded that school, as an input, did not matter (Hanushek, 1979, p. 352; Hanushek, 2014, p. 273). Nevertheless, as the need to measure teacher effectiveness grows, researchers, policy makers, and educational leaders are driven to seek out methods that objectively measure teacher effectiveness while eliminating other outside factors that influence student achievement. Value Added Model (VAM) measures have become one of the latest methods to measure teacher effectiveness. While these measures are not completely valid or reliable, they still provide an insight into teacher quality and how effective a teacher is at educating students (Harris, 2014, p. 774 5). Analysis Of The Short Stories Lady With A Pet Dog Hope Crenshaw Dr. Schott English 102 September 13,2015 Lady with the Pet Dog The short stories Lady with the Pet Dog written by Chekov and Lady with a Pet Dog written by Oates demonstrate the relationship between a young woman, Anna , and her lover. The authors use two different points of view as well as Anna s behaviors, motives and feelings in an attempt to convey a sense of understanding. Neither Chekove nor Oates evoke a sense of sympathy towards Anna as she struggles to justify her actions. Firstly, Anna uses her unsatisfactory marriage to justify her affair. In Chekhov uses my husband may be a good, honest man, but he is a flunkey! (Chekov 227) to indicate that Anna has an estranged marriage. Although Anna has not obtained an ideal marriage, she shows that she does indeed care about her husband ... and begging his wife to return home as soon as possible. Anna Sergeyevna made haste to go (Chekov 228). Chekov uses the fact that Anna rushes home in order to show that she still loves her husband. After all, if she did not, she would not have rushed home. Although Oates writes from Anna s point of view, the author still shows similarities with Chekhov s version. I love you, her husband said fiercely, angrily. • 12. The Niagara Escarpment Ava Is An Ideal Area For Grape Growing Introduction The Niagara Escarpment AVA is a relatively new viticulture designated area. The area received the designation in 2005 and is now one of the fastest growing wine regions in New York State. This AVA is comprised of a portion of the Niagara Escarpment landform that runs from New York State through Canada into Wisconsin. (Fig. A) The escarpment has formed over time due to erosion of the rock layers. The top rock layer, dolomitic limestone, is more weather resistant causing it to erode slower and creating the escarpment landform. Fig. A The escarpment is an ideal area for grape growing, as well as other fruits, due to the microclimate created by the combination of the escarpment and Lake Ontario. Those growing areas that are near the lake experience weather that is slightly moderated by the presence of the lake waters. Those that are contained on the escarpment receive a moderated weather pattern due to the escarpments form. The warm air trapped by the escarpment helps to provide those vineyards with a longer growing season and protection from harsh winter freezing and spring or fall frost. The Niagara Wine Trail is currently in a period of growth. In the last few months several new wineries have been added to the trail and the trail has begun its expansion towards Rochester. • 13. Entropy Research Paper Entropy and Energy Density in A Finite and Infinite Dimensional Universe Entropy, or disorder, is increasing in the universe and aims to do so until it reaches its maximum limit or capacity [1]. Energy density, on the other hand, is the amount of energy stored per a given volume of space [2]. While the total amount of energy in the universe remains constant [3], energy density decreases as the universe continues to expand. In an infinite dimensional universe, meaning the universe will continue to expand indefinitely in all directions, entropy will continue to increase until it eventually reaches its maximum. When this happens, all energy would have been transformed into the same type of energy and dispersed equally throughout the whole universe. This would happen because if entropy has reached its maximum limit, then everything would have already been disordered to its maximum limit. At this point, the whole universe would then be in equilibrium: the Heat Death of the Universe [4]. Another possible outcome is that, as the universe is expanding indefinitely, then entropy will also increase indefinitely and will not be able to reach its maximum limit. The snake is also used as an example to show the power of nature. he was gone into the grass that hid his prey projects the power of the snake as the word prey displays that this snake is a predator that is determined to hunt down its prey. The fact that the prey is not mentioned also amplifies its danger as this snake may pose a threat on anyone, no matter the size, like how nature is so dangerous that it can pose a threat on any one. Judith Wright makes it clear that nature is strong enough to impose a threat on humans so that means that we should respect nature for what it can do to us, and a snake is used as a metaphor to represents ... • 23. Chaos In The Outsiders, By S. E. Hinton Outsiders Connection In the book, The Outsiders, the author, S.E Hinton ingrains that social class causes chaos. Ponyboy leaves home enraged and stunned after his brother Darry slaps him across the face. Ponyboy meets up with his friend Johnny with a plan to run away. The plan falls through and the two end up at the park face to face with the Socs the same Socs that jumped Johnny. In a point to save Ponyboy from death Johnny kills Bob, one of the main Socs of the group. While Ponyboy stares at Bob, he thinks , Bob, the handsome Soc, was lying there in the moonlight, doubled up and still. A dark pool was growing from him, spreading slowly over the blue white cement (56). In this passage, S.E Hinton supports the idea that social class causes chaos. Since Johnny and Ponyboy are in a lower social class than the Socs, the Socs think that they can take advantage of the greasers by jumping them and harming them. I believe that there are three themes that are more prevalent than the others. The first of those themes is suffering, the second is modernization and the final theme is isolation. In Tolstoys novella suffering is a major influence on the way that the novella ends. The one constant in The Death of Ivan Ilych, is suffering. The impact of apartheid is evident when analyzing Mxolisi and Nelson Mandela s lives. Both men were exposed to similar oppressive environments as they lived in South Africa during apartheid, though their stories show generational differences. Mandela was an activist early in the apartheid regime and then spent a significant period of his life in jail until the end of the regime as he took part in reassessment of apartheid and negotiations. Mxolisi was born and raised during Apartheid and much of his experiences growing up took place while Mandela was in jail. These two men were both victims of colonial inheritance and apartheid, which lead them to extreme measures as they acted in protest of an oppressive government with the hope that they might gain back power, rights, and freedom for themselves and the South African people. Decolonization was sweeping across the African continent during the 1950 s and during this time in South Africa, apartheid was being solidified by a white minority government. Specific heat capacity is the amount of heat energy required in joules to raise 1kg of a substance by 1 degree Celsius, different substances absorb heat energy at different rates not all substances require the same amount of heat energy to increase the internal temperature of a substance this depends on the mass and the material it s self. Aluminium is more efficient at radiating or dispersing heat as it is less dense which also makes it a lighter material. Overall this experiment has successfully reached its objectives however some errors have occurred as shown in the experimental errors where the experimental values do not match the actual values of the materials this could be caused by heat loss through the material which could be reduced with better insulation of the material. Further error could have been avoided in the first experiment by letting the heating element reach its maximum output before inserting it into the aluminium block as the warm up time is not taken into consideration in the first experiment; this was not a factor in the second experiment as the heating element was immediately placed into the copper block and was at its maximum ... A few aspects that will delay insect activity are burying a body which also delays decomposition, covering the corpse especially tightly, being in the water, cold weather, and the height of the body from the ground, for example in a hanging. George would also go out to parties all the time, for hours at a time and just leave Hedda at home all by herself. Hedda tries to gain superiority over George s aunt, Aunt Julie. Aunt Julie is the person that raised George. In a conversation George once had with his aunt he said, You, who ve been a father and mother to me both. When Aunt Julie stopped by to welcome Hedda and George back from their honeymoon Hedda talked lowly about Aunt Julie s hat which she picked out just to impress her nephews new wife. When talking about the maid Hedda said, See there! She left her old hat lying on a chair. Suppose someone came in and saw it. Hedda also refuses to addressed Aunt Tesman by her sir name and not as if she was family. George once said If only you could bring yourself to speak to her warmly, by her first name. No no don t ask me to do that. I told you this once before. I ll try to call her aunt. That should be enough. By acting this way Hedda tried to return to the life she knew when she was with her father. Another person Hedda try s to take control over is Thea. • 48. Selection And Justification Of The Optimum Marine Cable... Selection and justification of the optimum marine cable route between Rathlin Island and Ballycastle EGM 310 Matthew McKenna Introduction. Rathlin Island located just off the North coast of Northern Ireland (NI) has been selected as a suitable location for the Government to place a new windfarm. As the Government tries to move away from non renewable energy sources this proposal for the windfarm will provide electricity to the towns of County Antrim. The Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) are concerned that the marine cable route should have as little impact on the natural and cultural environments, this is because the EU believes that the natural and cultural environments and the heritage they contain are an important resource for economic growth and employment (European Commissions, 2016). As such have assigned the task of identifying a suitable low impact route for the cable from Church Bay (Rathlin Island) to Ballycastle (Co. Antrim). To produce a marine cable that has a minimum impact on the natural and cultural environment the NIEA has given several guidelines that need to be followed. The cable must: 1. Be trenched and re filled at a depth of 2m, this means as much bedrock should be avoided as this will be a costly and timely process. 2. Avoid all shipwrecks 3. Avoid all slopes that exceed angles of 40° 4. Avoid all mobile substrates exceeding mean spring flows of 50cm/s Methodology In order to identify and justify the optimum route for the marine ... • 49. The Planning Function of Management Most companies have a vision, mission statement, and a set of core values. These three things are normally made up by a group of senior managers or a leadership team. Once these three things are decided upon, the upper management or leadership team should deliver the information to the management below them, so the important information is delivered to all levels of employees within the company. After the these three things have been set, most companies will post their vision, mission statement and core values somewhere for all employees to see. Often time s new employees are given copies of these three things in orientation or on their first day of work. Coming up with the vision, mission statement and core values are just one way that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Again, this is a way of planning that requires the participation of all levels of management. Operational planning is used mostly by lower level or front line managers. These are the routine tasks of scheduling, human resource tasks, and daily statistics which are looked at when planning for future staffing and projects. Although these tasks are carried out by lower level management or supervisors, they upper management still has a say in these tasks. The upper level management or leadership team more than likely made those tasks as a part of the employees daily routine; so again, all hands of management play a roll in the operational planning as well. Contingency planning tends to be the one that is discussed the least. Contingency planning is very important in most companies, as this is where the safety and disaster planning comes into play. These plans are made by all levels of management as well as employees who are non managers. Each department knows its own needs when it comes to its contingency plans, it is important to have all employees involved in the planning. For example, a fire drill plan; all the employees know where the closest exit to their workspace is, and they can all agree to find a common meeting place outside of the building. This is not a plan that has to be done by a specific level of management. There has to be some management oversight, but all the department employees need to be in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 50. Literature Review On Nurse To-Patient Ratios Literature Review The topic of appropriate nurse to patient ratios has been a highly researched subject for over a decade. Many researchers approach this topic by focusing on the effect that high nurse to patient ratios have on patient outcomes often called nurse specific indicators . The following includes a summary of five recent studies conducted on the cause and effect relationship between high nurse to patient ratios and the increased occurrence of nurse specific indicators (e.g. urinary tract infection, patient falls, central line associated blood stream infections, etc). California passed Assembly Bill 394, making them the first state to pass a law that required hospitals to limit the amount of patients included in a nurse s workload. The California Assembly Bill 394 (AB394) was put into effect on January 1, 2004. In 2012 a study was conducted to determine if mandated nurse to patient ratios actually had a positive impact on patient outcomes. This study examined medical/surgical units in California hospitals. The data used to compare outcomes before and after passing AB394 was from the year 2000 2002 for the before data. The after data was from the years 2005 2006 (Cook, Gaynor, Stephens, Taylor, 2012). Shockingly, the data compared before and after the implementation of AB394 showed only a slight decrease in adverse patient outcomes. One patient outcome specifically mentioned was hospital acquired pressure ulcers. The occurrence rate of hospital acquired ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
