This document summarizes research on using stem cell therapy to treat congestive heart failure. Several types of stem cells show promise for cardiac regeneration, including embryonic stem cells, bone marrow-derived cells, and mesenchymal stem cells. Studies in rats have shown embryonic stem cells can differentiate into heart muscle cells and improve function after a heart attack. Bone marrow mononuclear cells have also led to promising results in human trials for heart failure treatment. While stem cell therapy represents a new strategy, more research is still needed before it can be widely applied in clinical practice.
