IT can improve healthcare quality in several ways. It allows clinicians, patients, and their families to access the right information at the right time to make informed decisions. IT can also integrate and continuously update the information base as clinical evidence and patient conditions evolve. Additionally, IT used across different healthcare settings could create a virtual integrated delivery system without requiring formal mergers. Studies have found that IT applications like computerized physician order entry and bar coding can significantly reduce medical errors and improve patient safety. While IT is an important tool, on its own it is not the only factor in improving quality, and is generally part of broader healthcare quality efforts.
