Poor
Environmental
Sanitation
Sanitation is the common term use to
describe the safe disposal of garbage
and human waste. Most government
have typically built the basic sanitation
infrastructure enjoyed by people but in
most countries, this has not been
done. More people around the world
do not have the means to access
proper sanitation methods, this causes
the disease to a lot of people.
Illnesses and conditions caused by
environmental factors are collectively
called environmental diseases.
Pesticides, chemicals, radiation, air
pollution, water pollution and noise
pollution are some man-made
hazards that cause diseases and
disorders. Potential illness-causing
agents are everywhere either at
home, at work or at play.
Respiratory diseases include
diseases of the lungs, pleural
cavity, bronchial tubes, trachea,
upper respiratory tract and the
nerves and muscles of breathing.
It ranges from mild and self-
limiting, such us common colds
to life-threatening like such as
bacterial pneumonia or
pulmonary embolism.
Germs are everywhere. They can
be found in the air, on food,
plants and animals, in soil and
water, and on every surface,
including the body. Skin
infections can be result in skin
inflammations known as
dermatitis.
Gastrointestinal diseases and disorders
take place when we accidentally take in
contaminated food or uncleaned drinking
water. Diarrhea and food poisoning are
some of the results of which.
In order to enjoy living we must be
responsible with our actions towards our
environment. The following are some
ways that we must do to keep ourselves
away from diseases.
1. Cleaning and keeping water supply
safe.
2. Cleaning and keeping air ambient
safe.
3. Promoting efficient and safe waste
disposal.
4. Protecting food from pollution.
5. Maintaining adequate housing in
clean and safe surrounding.
Water is of major
importance to all living
things. Human body is
made up to 60% of it. Here
are some important
reasons why we need to
drink water regularly.
Clean water is important because…
- it keeps us hydrated.
- it flushes toxins in our body.
- it gives healthier skin and complexion
- - it reduces the risk of becoming
overweight.
Although many places suffer from dirty
rivers and lakes, the good news is that there
is a lot you and your family can do to
conserve water and help keep it clean.
We can keep water clean and
safe by:
1. Help clean up streams
Organize or participate in stream
cleanups. Ask your parents and
friends
to help out. Get your class or
school to
adopt a stream.
2. Plant vegetation along stream
banks
Organize a project with your school,
environmental club or Scout troop to
plant trees, shrubs and grasses along
stream banks. That will stabilize
banks to help prevent erosion,
reduce sediment, filter runoff and
provide shade and wildlife habitat.
3. Partner with professionals Get
your teacher to ask local, state or
federal agencies to partner with
your school in supporting such
environmental activities as storm
drain stenciling, stream
monitoring and environmental
fairs.
4. Never pour chemicals down
sinks or toilets Chemicals that
we use in our homes every day—
paint, cleaning sprays, weed
killer, bug killer and many
others—should never end up in
our water. Encourage your
parents to use less fertilizer and
pesticide and to recycle motor
oil, antifreeze and paint.
5. Use safe products whenever
you can Talk with your parents
about replacing some of the toxic
chemicals in your home with
nontoxic products. The safer
products people use, the fewer
unhealthy chemicals end up in
our waters.
6. Recycle and dispose all trash
properly
Never flush stuff like plastic sandwich
baggies or band-aids down the toilet.
Things that aren’t biodegradable—
that don’t break down naturally by
themselves—can damage sewers and
wind up littering beaches and waters.
Air Pollution
It occurs when there are high
concentrations of particles
that are harmful to humans
and animals. The gases and
particles that cause air
pollution are referred to as
―Air Pollutants‖.
Causes of Air Pollution
a. Burning of fossil fuel.
b. Gas emissions from industrial and
electrical facilities, motor vehicles
exhaust, gasoline vapour and
chemical solvent.
c. Improper waste disposal.
d. d. Illegal logging and kaingin
system
How to reduce air pollution?
a. Cut down on burning fossil
fuels.
Avoid riding on vehicles or
motorcycles
instead use alternative way of
transportation like using bicycles,
walking or jogging.
b. Choose a fuel – efficient car or
truck
when buying vehicles.
c. Turn off the appliances when not
need.
d. Avoid smoking cigarettes.
e. Anti – smoke belching drives
f. Plant more trees that will help
reduce carbon dioxide.
Activity A
Direction: Draw thumbs up if the situation
shows good sanitary habit for the
environment and thumbs down if it is not.
__________1. Ben threw his garbage in
the river.
__________2. Allysa attends GSP clean up
drive regularly.
__________3. Our MAPEH teacher taught
us how to make pillows out of wrappers.
__________4. Blaire prefers to
walk in going to school than
riding on a motor cycle.
__________5. Jayson invites
his classmate to cut down
classes and do some hang outs
while smoking cigarette.
Direction: Write WP if the
situation causes water pollution
and AP for air pollution.
__________1. Jason uses
dynamite in fishing.
__________2. After cleaning the
backyard, Mary burn all the
plastics and dried leaves.
__________3. The factories
along the Pasig river disposed
their used chemicals in the river.
__________4. Mr. Antonio’s
motorcycle exhaust dark smoke
from its pipe.
__________5. Kaingin system is
a common livelihood in rural
communities.
WRAP-UP
Good environmental sanitation keeps us away
from different kinds of diseases and illnesses.
This is the reason why there are lot of laws that
has been made in order to protect the welfare of
our environment.
Simple obedience with the law will help us save
our mother earth from destruction.
Conservation of energy will lessen the risk of fast
extinction of our natural resources.
1. What does 4R’s stand for?
2. What are the best ways to keep our air and
water safe?
VALUING
While walking on your way home, you saw
your classmate busy sipping his cigarette.
When he is done, he threw the cigarette
stub on the water drainage. You know that
what he did is not good to his health and
to the environment.
1. What are the bad effects of smoking?
2. What advise can you tell him to stop his
bad habits?
POSTTEST
Direction: Write the letter of the
correct answer.
1. Poor environmental sanitation
results to the following except one.
A. water pollution

members of the BSP were
required to attend the
riverside clean up drive.
Unfortunately, your cousins
invited you play computer
games that day. What is the
best thing to do?
A. you will write an excuse letter to
you troop leader telling that you are
sick so that they will allow you not to
attend the said activity
B. you will refuse the offer of your
cousin and attend the clean-up drive
instead
C. you will attend but on the middle
of the activity you will excuse and
pretend that you are not feeling well
D. none of the above
3. Which of the following does
not belong to the group?
A. reforestation
B. burning of fossil fuels
C. gas emission from industrial
facilities
D. illegal logging
4. Which among the following
disease is caused by food
contamination or unclean
drinking water?
