There is a lot of talk now around the term Service Mesh. The hype is high and the promise is real. The problem is that there is not really a good definition of what service mesh really is. In this talk we are going to review the problem service meshes are trying to solve, name the core components that make up a service mesh, and discuss the benefits an organization can receive by implementing this new technology.
Service Mesh. What does it mean? We have already learned Microservices and can develop complex distributed applications. Is Service Mesh something we need or is another fancy buzzword?
This presentation walks through the evolution of application architecture from Monolith to Service Mesh to give an idea of what a Service Mesh is, how it is applied to existing architectures and is focused help you to understand if you really need it.
A introduction to Microservices Architecture: definition, characterstics, framworks, success stories. It contains a demo about implementation of microservices with Spring Boot, Spring cloud an Eureka.
The concept of service mesh is one of the new technologies that have grown up around the container and micro-service model over the last couple of years, and Istio is the latest entry into this space. As Istio was recently included as an incubated project in the CNCF, many companies are now looking to it to provide a set of key functions to accelerate their micro-service application management model. Istio enables bi-directional authentication and security of service communication via TLS based authentication and encryption, and at the same time is able to capture application level communication statistics, improving the application development team's visibility into the otherwise difficult to track communication patterns. In this way, Istio acts like an application level network, riding across the underlying capabilities of Kubernetes CNI based networks and network policy. We will implement Istio on a GKE kubernetes cluster, and instrument a simple application to get better insight into how Istio provides its capabilities.

Adopting a mesh for your services can save hundreds of hours of developer time and reduce the burden placed on operations. In this talk we'll explore some common use cases for service mesh, look at some case studies, and then dig into innovation happening in this space such as "sidecar-less" service mesh.
Canary Deployments on Amazon EKS with Istio - SRV305 - Chicago AWS SummitAmazon Web Services
Within complex systems, even well-written code can behave in unexpected ways and lead to outages and critical issues. Amazon Elastic Container Service for Kubernetes (Amazon EKS) enables you to easily run Kubernetes, quickly deploy new code, and revert to safe, stable releases when issues are identified. But the damage done in the short period between deployment and rollback can be significant. In this session, we show you how to limit the effect of unforeseen issues using canary deployments with Istio and how to better monitor your applications in Amazon EKS and spot potential problems before they affect your customer base. This session is brought to you by AWS partner, Datadog.

Microservices - Hitchhiker's guide to cloud native applicationsStijn Van Den Enden
Microservices are a true hype these days. Netflix, Amazon, eBay, … are all using microservices, but why? The idea is simple; split your application into multiple services which can evolve autonomously through time. The name suggests to keep these services small. Conceptually this seems not all that different from a classical Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). Nonetheless, microservices do offer a new perspective. A monolithic application is divided into a couple small services which can be independently developed, deployed and scaled. Flexibility is increased, but using this model also has some pitfalls. This session sheds a light on the microservices landscape; the key drivers for using the pattern, tooling to support development and maintenance, and the pros and cons that go with it. We’ll also introduce some key design principles that can be used in creating and modelling these modular enterprise applications.

AWS CloudFormation Automation, TrafficScript, and Serverless architecture wit...PolarSeven Pty Ltd
Chris Kawchuck has 20 years experience in the Telecom and Service provider industry. He will be demonstrating how easy it is to spin up a Brocade vADC in AWS; enabling serverless architectures using S3 buckets, and accomplish real-time traffic rewrites to get you out of sticky situations.
Learn about:
1. Load balancing and scaling options available on AWS
2. Automating the Brocade vADC spin up using Cloudformation Templates
3. Enabling use of "Serverless" web pages in AWS 4.Taking care of tricky situations using TrafficScript
Implementing any 3rd party Load Balancer from the Amazon AWS Marketplace can be a daunting task. Not only does one have to learn the vendor's specific interface, you also need to perform quite a few administrative tasks to setup front end IPs, back end pools, clustering, and so on.
Brocade has published a CloudFormation Template (CFT) which takes all the hard work out of setting it up and operating. Using DevOps tools and open source scripts, we not only automate the deployment of the Brocade vADC within AWS, but all the configuration you need to administer, cluster, and provision your Load Balancers; including public IPs and your back-end server pools.
We would like you to try it, and take advantage of the powerful feature of the Brocade vADC.

SACON EU 2019 "API Gateways and Service Meshes: Opening the Door to Applicati...Daniel Bryant
Modernizing applications by decoupling them from the underlying infrastructure on which they are running can enable portability and innovation (shifting workloads to the cloud), reduce costs, and improve security. Cloud native infrastructure, container technology, and orchestration frameworks like Kubernetes decouple applications from the compute fabric, but in order to fully realize the benefits, they also need to be decoupled at the traffic and networking layer too.
An API gateway can decouple applications from external consumers by routing ingress requests from end users and third parties to various internal applications and by providing cross-cutting functionality like authentication, encryption, and rate limiting. A service mesh can decouple applications from internal consumers by dynamically routing inter-data center and service-to-service requests, regardless of where they’re exposed on the network. The core concepts behind an API gateway and service mesh are not new, but the combination of current user requirements and modern cloud native technologies provides new constraints and new opportunities.
Daniel Bryant provides an overview of these technologies, how they impact application architecture, and what implementation options are currently available. Daniel has worked within these technologies for over five years, both as an architect and end user, and also as an engineer within a cloud infrastructure-focused tooling organization.

Enterprise Network Transformation Powered by OrangeX, with Nokia Nuage and AW...Amazon Web Services
Come learn how OrangeX in Spain is transforming enterprise networks with AWS Cloud and Nokia's Nuage SD-WAN. Nuage's SD-WAN is delivered with management, control, and user plane in the AWS cloud. It is powered by Amazon EC2 i3.metal and AWS hybrid IT services via true multi-tenant, built-in multi-segment orchestrators, and multi-tier management spanning from operators to partners to direct enterprise portals. This enables the solution to be extended directly to service provider private backbones and cloud data centers and services, as well as between enterprise sites. The solution further enables SD-WAN over last mile broadband and leased wholesale circuits to access existing private backbones to leverage their reliable mid-mile connectivity and existing connectivity to enterprise sites. With SD-WAN becoming an essential function in vCPE deployments, Nuage’s SD-WAN has been established as the platform for simplifying the delivery and deployment of virtual network functions, such as security and agility, on-premises, and in the cloud. Learn factors to consider in using SD-WAN solution with AWS, agile implementation of the solution, and leveraging a cloud-ready operating model. We share sufficient references for you to take away to continue learning.
When thinking about automation and orchestration most people have tools like CloudFormation, Chef or Puppet in mind. These tools do a great job at allocating infrastructure resources and configuring them. But in reality, when deploying and managing complete application stacks, there’s much more to it. You need things to be done in a certain order; there are dependencies to consider and information to share between your application tiers, and then there’s everything related to post deployment - recovering from failures, scaling and continuously deploying your code, to name some. In this session we’ll discuss what it takes to orchestrate and automate your applications through the entire lifecycle, and without losing control.

Understanding Globus Data Transfers with NetSageGlobus
NetSage is an open privacy-aware network measurement, analysis, and visualization service designed to help end-users visualize and reason about large data transfers. NetSage traditionally has used a combination of passive measurements, including SNMP and flow data, as well as active measurements, mainly perfSONAR, to provide longitudinal network performance data visualization. It has been deployed by dozens of networks world wide, and is supported domestically by the Engagement and Performance Operations Center (EPOC), NSF #2328479. We have recently expanded the NetSage data sources to include logs for Globus data transfers, following the same privacy-preserving approach as for Flow data. Using the logs for the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) as an example, this talk will walk through several different example use cases that NetSage can answer, including: Who is using Globus to share data with my institution, and what kind of performance are they able to achieve? How many transfers has Globus supported for us? Which sites are we sharing the most data with, and how is that changing over time? How is my site using Globus to move data internally, and what kind of performance do we see for those transfers? What percentage of data transfers at my institution used Globus, and how did the overall data transfer performance compare to the Globus users?

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.
We describe the deployment and use of Globus Compute for remote computation. This content is aimed at researchers who wish to compute on remote resources using a unified programming interface, as well as system administrators who will deploy and operate Globus Compute services on their research computing infrastructure.
