In my eighteen years of my life, this summer has surely been the most memorable. It
was filled with countless wonderful memories during these past three months. This
summer was filled with loads of amusement, excitement, nerves, and sadness.
Summer started one week early, however, other than that it was to an extent, the same
as the other summers. I spent a vast deal of my time working, with my friends and
family, and in the gym.
This year marked my fourth year working as a lifeguard at the Winner city pool. Each
year I have worked, we only jumped in for kids around three times the entire summer,
and this year we jumped in over ten times. I jumped into the deep side of the pool,
which is twelve feet deep and grab a little boy who started sinking after he jumped
off the diving board. It was not strenuous for the sake of him being light and I
could just grab his arm and pull him to the ladder, however, it made me insanely
scary, and I was a little shaken up afterwards. Also, this year I accomplished my
third year of private swimming lessons. Usually I teach around ten to twelve lessons
a summer and this year I doubled that and had twenty seven kids for lessons.
Scheduling lessons this year was not effortless, in consideration of working at the

Lack of Free Will
In Joseph Conrad s Heart of Darkness one important theme in the novel is
predetermined fate. The lack of free will that Marlow exhibits points to a driving
sense that he has only one way out of the jungle. Marlow s only mission is to find
Kurtz. Tunnel vision captures Marlow s psyche and his want of destruction is only
rivaled by his need to find Kurtz. Heart of Darknessexemplifies the absurdist and
existentialist viewpoints that reside in literature written before and after human
conflicts. Two other works that support this theme are a poem The Old Sexton and a
modern novel, Fight Club. These works share similar motifs such as a nonlinear
timeline and an ambiguous, unreliable narrator.
An extension of the one way out theme, that all three works share, is the unrelenting
hopelessness that dominates the lives of not only the main narrators but also those
characters to which they interact with inside the plot of each story. The existentialist
question, Why do we struggle? is felt by every central character that exist within
each tale. Humanity as a whole asks this question after viewing the horrors of war
and disaster; the narrators are mouthpieces of the sectors of the population that beg
for answers in a world with no hope or any light.
The Old Sexton written by Park Benjamin presents the rumination of a grave digger
who is trying to build a glorious, monumental kingdom with the dead that he buries.
The poem has a narrator that quite aptly stays undefined. The old

The policy that will be mainly discussed is the state and federal laws toward the use
of Assisted Reproductive Technology(ART). The government should provide funding

When the woman is unable to carry the baby, the couple would normally consider
hiring a surrogate to do so. This method has helped plenty of heterosexual couples
and gay male couples to reach parenthood(Asch and Marmor par. 18). If we look at
the data, in 2001, only 571 surrogacy contracts were reported and less than 1% of
them knew about ARTs(Asch and Marmor par. 18). Only a very few states accept
gestational carrier arrangements. Many states in this country straight out ban the
use of surrogate mothers. Even states that allow surrogate motherhood would most
likely to refuse to approve the contract if any disagreements develop among the

surrogacy in the United States, many couples begin to seek help overseas(Asch

that they send about 100 couples to India every year for surrogacy. Many people
chose to do this also because it costs less. It costs about $50,000 to have a surrogate
mother in the United States, however, surrogacy in India can be easily managed
between $10,000 $12,000(Asch and Marmor par.

stomach because the number of moles of HCl reacted with the NaOH is 0.00216
moles (one tablet), which is less than Gaviscon. The number of moles of NaOH that
were added from the burette is 0.00327 moles (one tablet of Gaviscon). However,
the actual number of moles of calcium carbonate in a Gaviscon tablet is 0.0019
moles, but for Quick eze, the number of moles is 0.0079 moles (actual amount of
base in both tablets). This means that the number of moles added from the burette

It is an indirect technique, where reagent 1 (ant acid tablet) reacts with excess reagent
2, the analyte (HCl) in reaction, where some reagent 2 remains in the solution and the
sodium hydroxide is the titrant (reactant 3). For example; a known mass of the

There have been steady decline in the incidence of child s exposure to hazardous
work and child labor on balance. However, the recent estimates of child labor are
still astonishingly high and the trend predict even slower pace of decline in child
labor. According to ILO report in 2012, for age group 5 17 years 16.7 percent (or
264,427 in absolute number) of children are in some form of employment, 10.6
percent (equivalently 167,956) is considered as child labor, and 5.4 percent
(equivalently 85,344) is involved in hazardous work. Although these figures are
lower than the corresponding figures in 2000, the absolute numbers of child labor
are still very high (ILO 2013). Policy measures adopted to reduce child labor are
derived from an increasing number of theoretical and empirical research on this
issue specially since late 1990s. Theoretical studies use the household decision
making model to explain the incidence of child labor and attempt to find the
determinants of child labor. Initial models that attempt to explain the phenomenon
of child labor assume an exploitative household where child is considered

A fraction that has high content of the specific organelle and low contamination by
other organelles is desired however a fraction with highly purified mitochondria is
better even if the most mitochondria is found in other fractions. The purity of
mitochondrial fractions is usually determined by enzyme marker detection
assay(Hajek et al 2004). In our experiment we will use differential centrifugation to
isolate the mitochondria of cauliflower and then assay SDH activity using a fixed
time assay. We will then measure protein content in our fractions and calculate
specific activity and total activity of our fractions.
Materials and Methods
Mitochondrial Isolating
We used to florets from the cauliflower and disrupted the cell walls using a cold
isolation buffer (0.3 M D mannitol, 0.02 M phosphate buffer, pH 7.2) and an abrasive,
we then strained the homogenate with cheesecloth into a centrifuge tube suppoerted
by ice. The homogenate was then centrifuged at 600 g for 10 minutes at 4вЃ°C. The
postnuclear supernatant was removed and centrifuged at 12,000 g for 30 minutes at
4вЃ°C. The post mitochondrial supernatant was removed and the mitochondrial
pellet was resuspended in a cold assay buffer (0.3 M D mannitol, 0.01 M KCl, 0.005
