• Humans are struggling with the external world in order to reach
human flourishing.
• Atomist – the first materialist in Ancient Greece.
• Democritus and Leucippus – believe that the
world is made up of and controlled by the tiny
invisible units in the world called atomos or
seeds.

• Democritus and his disciples – the world
(including human beings), is made up of matter.

• We should adopt the fact

their lives using
God as a fulcrum
of their
existence.
5. Humanism
• Man is the captain of his own ship.
• Scientists turned to technology in order to ease the
difficulty of life.
• People are willing to tamper with time and space in the
name of technology. (e.g. Social media).
• Technology allowed us to tinker with our sexuality. (e.g
breast implant.)

  • 2. He declared THE GREATEST HAPPINESS PRINCIPLE by saying that: An action is right as far as it maximizes the attainment of happiness for the greatest number of people. John Staurt Mill Sharing food to the starving people.
  • 3. • Humans are struggling with the external world in order to reach human flourishing.
  • 4. • Atomist – the first materialist in Ancient Greece. • Democritus and Leucippus – believe that the world is made up of and controlled by the tiny invisible units in the world called atomos or seeds. NOTED! • Democritus and his disciples – the world (including human beings), is made up of matter. MATTER is what makes us attain HAPPINESS
  • 5. Schools of thought: ( All of aim for the good and happy life.) 1.Materialism 2.Hedonism 3.Stoicism 4.Theism 5.Humanism
  • 6. 1. Materialism ( Democritus and Leucippus) (two dimension) • Success materialism • Happiness materialism
  • 7. • Success materialism o (wealth and material possessions is a sign of success in life) o May influence life satisfaction positively.
  • 8. • Happiness materialism o (wealth and material consumption is a sign of happiness in life) o may influence life satisfaction negatively.
  • 9. • Pleasure has always been the priority. 2. Hedonism (Epicurus) “ eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we die” YOLO!
  • 10. 3. Stoicism ( Epicurus ) • One must learn to distance oneself and be apathetic. • Apatheia – to be different. • We should adopt the fact that some things are not within our control.
  • 11. 4. Theism • Most people find the meaning of their lives using God as a fulcrum of their existence.
  • 12. 5. Humanism • Man is the captain of his own ship. • Scientists turned to technology in order to ease the difficulty of life. • People are willing to tamper with time and space in the name of technology. (e.g. Social media). • Technology allowed us to tinker with our sexuality. (e.g breast implant.)
