This document discusses next-generation approaches to subject access and terminologies services. It provides examples of projects and implementations that are exploring new ways to utilize controlled vocabularies and subject headings, such as developing a faceted structure for Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and using subject headings to generate facets for refining search results. Specific projects mentioned include the UK High-Level Thesaurus project, experiments with "subject maps" at the University of Pennsylvania, and implementations at Indiana University, North Carolina State University, and the University of Chicago that automatically expand or suggest subject searches based on LCSH hierarchies.
