Among the large mammals of Africa, elephants are probably the worst affected by human activities. Although they have been listed as endangered and protected since 1989, illegal poaching and habitat destruction continue to diminish and isolate remaining populations that are dispersed widely over 37 sub-Saharan African countries. Their populations currently exist in small isolated habitat, and this threatens elephant genetic diversity. Although literature is available on the taxonomy and phylogeny of African elephant, few studies have focused on codon usage on mitochondrial genomes. To analyze nucleotide diversity, selective pressure and demographic history of African elephants, we used the portion of mitochondrial sequences of 102 individuals available in the genome database. Our data indicated a low codon bias index (CBI) and a relatively high effective number of codons (ENC) value in the mitochondrial genome, suggesting that African elephants are less biased in their codon usage preference. The data also support a strong purifying selection in the mitochondrial genome of African elephants. However, few sites are under positive selection in the mitochondrial genome of African elephants, with Loxodonta africana presenting more sites under positive selection compared to L. cyclotis. The present work supports the idea that different evolutionary rate among nucleotide sites in L. africana and L. cyclotis, attributable to differences in the frequency of positive selection and probably different environmental conditions, are the driving forces for the codon usage bias in African elephants. Further studies are needed to investigate the contribution of different subpopulation in the genetic structure and diversity of African elephants.

Within the Zingiberales there are many orphan crops that are grown in Africa and Asia where recently started genomic efforts will have an impact for the future understanding and breeding of these crops. Advanced genomics and genome knowledge of the taxonomically closely related genus Musa will help identify genes and their function. We will discuss relevant recent work with Musa and results from DNA sequencing, examinations of diversity and studies of genome structure, gene expression and epigenetic control in Boesenbergia and ensete. Ensete is an important starch staple food in Ethiopia. It is harvested just as the monocarpic plant starts to flower, a few years after planting, and the stored starch extracted from the pseudo-stem and corm. A genome sequence has been published, but there is little genomics. Characterization of the diversity in the species and understanding of the differences to Musa will enable selection and breeding for crop improvement to meet the requirements of increasing populations, climate change and environmental sustainability. Boesenbergia rotunda is widely used in traditional medicine in Asia and has been shown to produce secondary metabolites with antiviral activity. For high throughput propagation and metabolite production in vitro culture is employed; embryogenic calli of B. rotunda in vitro are able to regenerate into plants but lose this ability after prolonged periods in cell suspension media. Epigenetic factors, including histone modifications and DNA methylation are likely to play crucial roles in the regulation of genes involved in totipotency and plant regeneration. pis mellifera beekeeping in Colombia began with European lineages brought by the Spanish colonizers of America. Experimental swarms of African lineages that accidentally escaped in Brazil in the 1950s reached Colombia in the 1970s, starting a genetic crossing with local European populations. Today it is assumed that the majority of the Colom- bian beekeeping is of Africanized type, although some beekeepers continue to import European queens, to confer meekness. To determine the prevalence of African mitotypes in bee populations of the country, PCR and sequencing of a fragment from the intergenic region of the cytochrome oxidase I and II (COI–COII) mitochondrial genes, were employed. This study analyzed 645 A. mellifera specimens collected in six regions of Colombia, representing the largest sampling survey of apiculture for a Latin American country. The results indicated that 98.3% of these populations had African mitotypes, represented in 17 classes (A): A1, A1b, A1e, A4, A11, A26, A26a, A26b, A26c, A26d, A29a, A30, A36, A39, A44, A46 and A47. Only 1.7% of beehives had European mitotypes (C), corresponding to ligustica subspecies. These results confirm that beekeeping in the country is mostly of the Africanized type.

Abstract
Background: Genetic analyses of human lice have shown that the current taxonomic classification of head lice (Pediculus
humanus capitis) and body lice (Pediculus humanus humanus) does not reflect their phylogenetic organization. Three
phylotypes of head lice A, B and C exist but body lice have been observed only in phylotype A. Head and body lice have
different behaviours and only the latter have been involved in outbreaks of infectious diseases including epidemic typhus,
trench fever and louse borne recurrent fever. Recent studies suggest that body lice arose several times from head louse
populations.
Methods and Findings: By introducing a new genotyping technique, sequencing variable intergenic spacers which were
selected from louse genomic sequence, we were able to evaluate the genotypic distribution of 207 human lice. Sequence
variation of two intergenic spacers, S2 and S5, discriminated the 207 lice into 148 genotypes and sequence variation of
another two intergenic spacers, PM1 and PM2, discriminated 174 lice into 77 genotypes. Concatenation of the four
intergenic spacers discriminated a panel of 97 lice into 96 genotypes. These intergenic spacer sequence types were
relatively specific geographically, and enabled us to identify two clusters in France, one cluster in Central Africa (where a
large body louse outbreak has been observed) and one cluster in Russia. Interestingly, head and body lice were not
genetically differentiated.
Conclusions: We propose a hypothesis for the emergence of body lice, and suggest that humans with both low hygiene
and head louse infestations provide an opportunity for head louse variants, able to ingest a larger blood meal (a required
characteristic of body lice), to colonize clothing. If this hypothesis is ultimately supported, it would help to explain why poor
human hygiene often coincides with outbreaks of body lice. Additionally, if head lice act as a reservoir for body lice, and that
any social degradation in human populations may allow the formation of new populations of body lice, then head louse
populations are potentially a greater threat to humans than previously assumed.

Understanding the origin and evolution of the eukaryotic cell and the full diversity of eukaryotes is relevant to many biological disciplines.
However, our current understanding of eukaryotic genomes is extremely biased, leading to a skewed view of eukaryotic biology.
We argue that a phylogeny-driven initiative to cover the full eukaryotic diversity is needed to overcome this bias.

Eukaryotic genomics are biased towards multicellular organisms and their parasites.

Species are groups of actually or potentially interbreeding populations which are reproductively isolated from other such groups. The biological species concept has been prevalent in the evolutionary literature for the last several decades and is emphasized in many college-level biology courses. It is probably the species concept most familiar to biologists in diverse fields, such as conservation biology, forestry, fisheries, and wildlife management. Species defined by the biological species concept have also been championed as units of conservation. The species concept for most phycologists is based on the morphological characters and hence the term ‘species’ means morphospecies. On the other hand, for evolutionary biologists, the term means biological species that can be defined as a reproductive community of populations (reproductively isolated from others) that occupy a specific niche in Nature.

During the webinar, you will discover the PowSyBl ecosystem as well as handle and study an electrical network through an interactive Python notebook.
PowSyBl is an open source project hosted by LF Energy, which offers a comprehensive set of features for electrical grid modelling and simulation. Among other advanced features, PowSyBl provides:
- A fully editable and extendable library for grid component modelling;
- Visualization tools to display your network;
- Grid simulation tools, such as power flows, security analyses (with or without remedial actions) and sensitivity analyses;
The framework is mostly written in Java, with a Python binding so that Python developers can access PowSyBl functionalities as well.

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex ProofsAlex Pruden
This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).

As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
