 Full name Gustav Theodore Holst
 Was A teacher, arranger, and composer
 Best known for The Planets

3. Biography
 Born on September 21, 1874
 Father married twice and his mother
died when Gustav was eight.
 Went to The Royal College of music
 Gustav didn’t have many friends
because of his shy and solitary nature

4. Biography
 One of Gustav’s most memorable
musical events was hearing Mass in B
Minor by Bach
 Fell in love with Isobel Harrison, ended
up getting hitched in 1901
 Some miscellaneous facts about Gustav
are he had asthma, had neuritis in his
right hand, and for a little bit was
vegetarian

5. Biography
 After not wining the Ricordi prize he fell into
a depression which led to him overworking
so much he had to take a vacation to
Algeria, which gave him new enthusiasum
 Gustav was unfit to go to war which upset
him since he wanted to contribute to the
war effort
 He got a second chance to help near the
end of war, he was offered the post of
musical organizer for educational work
involving the soldiers

6. Biography
 In 1923 Gustav had an accident in which
he slipped and hit the back oh his head
which gave him a slight concussion which
took him years to fully recover from the
after effects
 Around 1925 Gustav’s works where not
being well received and many people
disliked his work
 In 1932 Gustav was hospitalized with
hemorrhagic gastritis caused by a
duodenal ulcer but, quickly returned to
work

7. Biography
 Holst near then end of his years lived in
a nursing home, due to an operation he
had his heart gave out two days later
and he died on May 25, 1934

8. Compositions
 Some very amazing pieces that Gustav
composed were
 The planets, St. Paul’s Suite, Brook
Green Suite, The Perfect Fool, Sita, The
Hymn of Jesus, and A choral Fantasia

 Gustav Holst lived in the 20th Century
 Gustav was alive during the first world war
 He was also alive during The War Of
1912, little known fact Oreo cookies were
introduced also on 1912
 Penicillin was discovered when Gustav
was alive
 Adolf Hitler Was appointed chancellor of
Germany the year before Gustav died
