2. • Doyle was born on May 22, 1859 in Edinburgh to Charles and
Mary Doyle.
• Best known for writing the Sherlock Holmes books, Doyle is a
world renown author.
• He is best known for crime fiction stories.
• On July 7th, 1930, at the age of 71, Doyle suffered a heart attack,
resulting in his death.
• He has written in total:
• Sherlock Holmes series (4 novels, 56 short stories
• Professor Challenger series (5 novels)
• Brigadier Gerard series (18 short stories)
• Other miscellany (19 novels, 115 short stories, 13 plays
[2 co-written], 81 poems, 12 pamphlets)
3. • Doyle was born third of 10 siblings. His parents,
Charles and Mary Foley, were both of Irish decent.
• Doyle’s father was an alcoholic, and lead a
problematic life of addiction and depression, which
lead to his death in 1893.
• Supported by his uncle, Doyle was sent to Roman
Catholic Jesuit preparatory school Hodder Place,
Stonyhurst.
• He then attended Stonyhurst College and received
his graduation degree in 1975.
• The college is also known to have a number of Stonyhurst
literary associates besides Doyle, such as J. R. R. College ‘s Crest
Tolkien. He wrote part of The Lord of the Rings in one
of the upper classrooms.

4. • In 1882 Doyle moved to Portsmouth
in June, and with only £10 to his
name, he set up a medical practice
at 1 Bush Villas in Elm Grove.
• Though not a very successful
practice, while waiting for his
patients he would write stories and
composed his first novel The
Narrative of John Smith
• His first significant work was A
Study in Scarlet. It featured the first
appearance of Sherlock Holmes,
who he partially modeled after one
of his former university teacher’s
Joseph Bell.

was the tales of a detective
named Sherlock Holmes.
• Holmes tales have been
translated in over 60
different languages, sold
over 100 million copies, and
has been made into a movie
in 2009, and a sequel is The Theatrical release

Louise) Hawkins in 1885 and
had 2 children with her. She
died in 1906.
• The next year he married
Elizabeth Leckie, whom he had
3 children with.
• His childrens names were Mary, Doyle and his family
Arthur, Denis, Adrian, and visiting New York
Lena.

wife Louisa in 1906, Doyle
sunk into deep depression.
• He began supporting
spiritualism, the belief of
spirits living among us
even after their death.
• He was friends with Harry
Houdini for quite a time,
and Doyle began believe One of the posters Houdini used
that Houdini possessed for his acts. Doyle was very
super-natural powers due interested in things like this.

chest in the hall of his home on
July 7th, 1930. He died due to a

• His last words were directed to
his wife: “You are wonderful.”
• His grave was built anonymously
due to his belief in spirtiualism.
