Melville
Herman Melville was born on August 1, 1819
Died in September 28, 1891
Known as an American novelist, short story
writer, and poet of the American Ressinance
period. Some of his best-known works are Moby
Dick, Typee, and Billy Bud, Salior an after death
post.
Background Information
He was the third child of Allan and Maria
Gansevoort Melvill, in a family that was to grow
to four boys and four girls. His forebears had
been among the Scottish and Dutch settlers of
New York and had taken leading roles in the
American Revolution and in the fiercely
competitive commercial and political life of the
new country.
John
Steinbeck
John Steinbeck was born February 27, 1902
Died in December 20, 1968
Known as an American writer and the Nobel
Prize in Literature winner for his realistic and
imaginative writings. Some of his notable works
are Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath, and
East of Eden
Background Information
Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California. He
was of German, English, and Irish descent.
Steinbeck and his first wife, Carol Henning,
married in January 1930 in Los Angeles. By
1940, their marriage was beginning to suffer,
and ended a year later, in 1941.

C.S. Lewis
Clive Staples Lewis was born on November 29,
1898
Died on November 22, 1963
Known as a British writer and Anglican Lay
Theologian. He held academic positions in English
literature at Oxford University and Cambridge
University. He is best known as the author of The
Chronicles of Narnia.
Background Information
Lewis was close friends with J. R. R. Tolkien,
author of The Lord of the Rings. Both men served
on the English faculty at Oxford University and
were active in the informal Oxford literary group
known as the Inklings.

Arthur Conan
Doyle
Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle born May 22, 1859
Died July 7, 1930
Was a British writer and physician. He created
the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A
Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and
fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr.
Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are
milestones in the field of crime fiction.
Background Information
In 1885 Doyle married Louisa Hawkins. She was
the youngest daughter of J. Hawkins,
of Minsterworth, Gloucestershire, and the sister
of one of Doyle's patients. the year after Louisa's
death, he married Jean Elizabeth Leckie. He
had met and fallen in love with Jean in 1897,
but had maintained a platonic relationship with
her while his first wife was still alive, out of
loyalty

J.D. Salinger
Jerome David Salinger born January 1, 1919
Died January 27, 2010
He was an American author best known for his
1951 novel The Catcher in the Rye. Salinger got
his start in 1940, before serving in World War II,
by publishing several short stories
in Story magazine.
Background Information
At age 36, Salinger married Claire Douglas,
a Radcliffe student who was art critic Robert
Langton Douglas's daughter. They had two
children, Margaret Salinger
and Matthew Salinger. Margaret Salinger wrote
in her memoir Dream Catcher that she believes
her parents would not have married, nor would
she have been born.

William
Faulkner
William Cuthbert Faulkner born in September 25,
1897. Died in July 6, 1962
An American writer known for his novels and short
stories set in the fictional Yoknapatawpha
County, based on Lafayette County, Mississippi,
where Faulkner spent most of his life. A Nobel
Prize laureate, Faulkner is one of the most
celebrated writers of American literature and is
widely considered the greatest writer
of Southern literature.
Background Information
The first of four sons of Murry Cuthbert Faulkner
and Maud Butler. His family was upper middle-
class, but "not quite of the old feudal cotton
aristocracy". After Maud rejected Murry's plan to
become a rancher in Texas, the family moved
to Oxford, Mississippi in 1902 where Faulkner's
father later became the business manager of
the University of Mississippi.

Vladimir
Nabokov
Vladimir Vladimirovich Nabokov born April 22,
1899. Died 2 July 1977,
Also known by the pen name Vladimir Sirin, was
a Russian-American novelist, poet, translator,
and entomologist. Born in Russia, he wrote his
first His first novel, Mashenka, appeared in
1926; it was avowedly autobiographical and
contains descriptions of the young Nabokov's
first serious romance.
Background Information
After the 1917 February Revolution, Nabokov's
father became a secretary of the Russian
Provisional Government in Saint Petersburg.
After the October Revolution, the family was
forced to flee the city for Crimea, at first not
expecting to be away for very long. They lived
at a friend's estate and in September 1918
moved to Livadiya, at the time part of
the Ukrainian Republic. Nabokov's father
became a minister of justice in the Crimean
Regional Government.

Oscal Wilde
Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde born October
16, 1854. Died November 30, 1900
He was an Irish poet and playwright. After writing
in different forms throughout the 1880s, he
became one of the most popular playwrights in
London in the early 1890s. He is best remembered
for his epigrams and plays, his novel The Picture of
Dorian Gray, and the circumstances of his criminal
conviction.
Background Information
Wilde was baptized as an infant in St. Mark's
Church Dublin, the local Church of Ireland church.
When the church was closed, the records were
moved to the nearby St. Ann's Church, Dawson
Street. Davis Coakley mentions a second baptism by
a Catholic priest, Father Prideaux Fox, who
befriended Oscar's mother circa 1859. According to
Fox's testimony in Donahoe's Magazine in 1905,
Jane Wilde would visit his chapel in Glencree,
County Wicklow, for Mass and would take her sons

Blake
William Blake born November 28, 1757
Died August 12, 1827
Was an English poet, painter, and printmaker.
Largely unrecognized during his life, Blake is
now considered a seminal figure in the history of
the poetry and visual art of the Romantic Age.
What he called his "prophetic works" were said
by 20th-century critic Northrop Frye to form
"what is in proportion to its merits the least
read body of poetry in the English language".
Background Information
Blake was apprenticed to engraver James
Basire of Great Queen Street, at the sum of
£52.10, for a term of seven years. At the end of
the term, aged 21, he became a professional
engraver. No record survives of any serious
disagreement or conflict between the two
during the period of Blake's apprenticeship.

Haruki
Murakami
Haruki Murakami born January 12, 1949
Is a Japanese writer. His novels, essays, and
short stories have been bestsellers in Japan
as well as internationally. He published his
first novel Hear the Wind Sing after working
as the owner of a small jazz bar for seven
years.
Background Information
Murakami was born in Kyoto, Japan, during
the post-World War II baby boom and raised
in Nishinomiya, and Ashiya. He is an only
child. His father was the son of
a Buddhist priest, and his mother is the
daughter of an Osaka merchant. Both
taught Japanese literature. His father was
involved in the Second Sino-Japanese War,
and was deeply traumatized by it, which
would, in turn, affect Murakami.

Background Information The first of four sons of Murry Cuthbert Faulkner and Maud Butler. His family was upper middle- class, but "not quite of the old feudal cotton aristocracy". After Maud rejected Murry's plan to become a rancher in Texas, the family moved to Oxford, Mississippi in 1902 where Faulkner's father later became the business manager of the University of Mississippi. Background Information After the 1917 February Revolution, Nabokov's father became a secretary of the Russian Provisional Government in Saint Petersburg. After the October Revolution, the family was forced to flee the city for Crimea, at first not expecting to be away for very long. They lived at a friend's estate and in September 1918 moved to Livadiya, at the time part of the Ukrainian Republic. Nabokov's father became a minister of justice in the Crimean Regional Government.   • 9. Oscal Wilde Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde born October 16, 1854. Died November 30, 1900 He was an Irish poet and playwright. After writing in different forms throughout the 1880s, he became one of the most popular playwrights in London in the early 1890s. He is best remembered for his epigrams and plays, his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, and the circumstances of his criminal conviction. Background Information Wilde was baptized as an infant in St. Mark's Church Dublin, the local Church of Ireland church. When the church was closed, the records were moved to the nearby St. Ann's Church, Dawson Street. Davis Coakley mentions a second baptism by a Catholic priest, Father Prideaux Fox, who befriended Oscar's mother circa 1859. Largely unrecognized during his life, Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of the poetry and visual art of the Romantic Age. What he called his "prophetic works" were said by 20th-century critic Northrop Frye to form "what is in proportion to its merits the least read body of poetry in the English language". Background Information Blake was apprenticed to engraver James Basire of Great Queen Street, at the sum of £52.10, for a term of seven years. At the end of the term, aged 21, he became a professional engraver. No record survives of any serious disagreement or conflict between the two during the period of Blake's apprenticeship. He published his first novel Hear the Wind Sing after working as the owner of a small jazz bar for seven years. Background Information Murakami was born in Kyoto, Japan, during the post-World War II baby boom and raised in Nishinomiya, and Ashiya. He is an only child. His father was the son of a Buddhist priest, and his mother is the daughter of an Osaka merchant. Both taught Japanese literature.
