Guided reading is an instructional strategy that helps students become better readers. The teacher works with small groups of students with similar reading difficulties. Areas worked on include word work, guided reading, and comprehension. During guided reading, the teacher guides students as they read aloud or silently, focusing on decoding, comprehension strategies, and nonfiction text features. After reading, the teacher does extension activities, practice, and makes the book available in the classroom library. Guided reading assesses reading process, literary analysis, communication, information and media literacy standards.
