Guidance with note taking:

Genre, Narrative and Representation. The table below should be used as a guide to
help you know what things to make notes on and a reminder of some key Media
language.

Setting Themes – what is the film
      Costume ‘about’? Characters:
      Props Jamal

      Music Flashback...
      Dialogue

HYBRID GENRE:As we shall be discussing after we have watched the film, Slumdog
Millionaire is more than just a romantic drama – there are several other influences
from different genres of film. Some of these are influenced by Danny Boyle/Simon
Beaufoy, some of them from the setting. If you can spot them, look out for
conventions that might seem more at home in a Bollywood movie and even some
conventions that we might consider typical of a British Social Realism film!
AUTEUR THEORY: Of course the other big thing to make notes on is whether or not this
film stands alone as a genre film or whether or not it is one piece in a larger body of
work that specifically belongs to Danny Boyle? We have looked at the themes or
‘preoccupations’ in his work. We’ve also looked at the visual style which appear
regularly. The question that needs to be answered: Is Danny Boyle an auteur? Does
Slumdog Millionaire prove this?
