Objectives
At the end of this session the students will able to:
o Define facilitation
o To identify goal of facilitated group learning
o To describe the techniques in facilitating groups
o To identify Steps to effective facilitation skills
o To describe advantages and challenges of facilitated
group learning.
Group one 4
Introduction
• There are three key words in the title, “facilitating”,
“learning” and “groups”.
• Facilitation:- is the act of making something easier. It
comes from the Latin word for ‘easy’ which is “facilis”.
• So, to facilitate someone is to make something easier
for them because most things are difficult before they
are easy.
Group one 5
Introduction…
• Facilitation is also about movement, about making it
easier to get from A to B (Hunter et al, 1996)
• However, not all facilitation is equal: the skills
associated with the facilitation of learning are
different to those associated with the facilitation of
problem-solving.
Group one 6
Introduction…
• Learning:- is the activity or process of gaining
knowledge or skill by studying, practicing, being taught,
or experiencing something.
• Groups:- can include random collections of people who
come together for the purpose of attendance at;-
• an educational session,
• people who work in the same place,
• service-based teams, or
• any combination of more than two people who
are learning together.
Group one 7
Introduction…
• Generally Group facilitation is a process in which a
person who:-
• Is acceptable to all members of a group,
• Is substantively neutral,
• Has no decision-making authority, and
• Is chosen to intervene in a group’s process to
help it meet its agreed purpose.
Group one 8
Facilitated Group Learning
Group one 9
Goal Of Facilitated Group Learning
• The following are three goals we believe are particularly
relevant for creating intentional group learning
experiences:
1. To individually and collectively increase our awareness
and understanding and to develop new perspectives
(Miriam Bell 2016).
2. To make important decisions. Groups engage in
learning to reach consensus or agreement on a path
forward(Miriam Bell 2016).
Group one 10
Goal Of Facilitated Group Learning…
3. To generate new ideas and/or solutions.
• Groups engage in learning to identify and/or refine
ideas that could inform planning, design, or
implementation; this might include generative
discussions about solutions and possible actions
(Miriam Bell 2016).
Group one 11
Techniques in Facilitating Groups
• Brainstorming:- Generate a broad range of new and
creative ideas.
• Consensus:- Make a group decision in a highly
participative, egalitarian fashion, and that everyone
can live with, even though not all members might
readily agree with the decision
Group one 12
Techniques in Facilitating Groups…
• Discussion:- Open exchange of comments among
group members to explore or clarify a topic, often in
preparation for a decision.
• Facilitator intervention:- Techniques used by the
facilitator to strengthen a constructive practice or
discontinue a destructive practice.
Group one 13
Techniques in Facilitating Groups…
• Ground rules:- Guide and scope the group members
to certain, desired behaviors in meetings; they
establish the group’s desired personality of the
group.
• Meeting agendas:- Ensure meetings are highly
focused and results-oriented around certain topics,
their order and their timing.
Group one 14
Techniques in Facilitating Groups…
• Meeting management:- Ensure all participation and
group processes are highly effective and efficient in a
meeting; can include most or all of the facilitation
techniques, in addition to planning and following up
the meeting.
• Nominal Group Technique:- Collect, organize and
summarize a wide range of ideas from among group
members to generate group conclusions and
recommendation
Group one 15
Techniques in Facilitating Groups…
• Parking Lots:- List a topic or question to be
addressed later on by the group.
• Round-Robin:- Ensure complete collection of all
ideas from all participants.
• Stories:- Descriptions of experiences meant to
convey important learnings.
• Voting:- Make a selection from various alternatives
Group one 16
Steps To Effective Facilitation Skills
• There are some steps of effective facilitation skills
these are:-
Step One: Set the Boundaries
• Always begin by setting the ground rules and
objectives, even if these are open ended.
• Once you have established the boundaries, you can
keep bringing the group back to these to make sure
they remain on track.
Group one 17
Steps To Effective Facilitation Skills…
Step Two: Remain impartial
• A facilitator needs to encourage the group to
consider ideas but their role should be one of guiding
and not dictating.
Step Three: Understand group dynamics
• Group dynamics is a term to define the patterns and
behaviors people use when they interact with others
to work in a team or group.
Group one 18
Steps To Effective Facilitation Skills…
• This is key to unlocking the group’s potential to achieve
its goal because it is where you get into the politics and
interaction between group members.
Step Four: Use your personal style
• A facilitator’s role is more about ‘being’ – the energy
and personality you bring – rather than ‘doing’ – the
techniques you use to help the group.
• To create an open and honest environment, you need an
empathic personal presence and the group needs to
respect and trust you.
Group one 19
Steps To Effective Facilitation Skills…
Step Five: Intervene when appropriate
• It’s important to continuously notice what’s going on,
make sense of it and then decide what to do about
it.
• You may need to ask difficult questions which are
fundamental or which draw attention to difficult
process issues which the group may find
uncomfortable.
Group one 20
Steps To Effective Facilitation Skills…
Step Six: Handling difficult situations
• Dealing with difficult people and conflict are two of
the biggest challenges to effective facilitation.
• There are tactics and skills that you can develop to
respond to these situations which are important
because success is often determined by how the issue
is addressed.
• If it is a difficult situation suggest having a break for
coffee, change the scenery, work in pairs or brainstorm
the issue involved.
Group one 21
Steps To Effective Facilitation Skills…
Step Seven: Practice, practice, practice
• Remember facilitation is an art and not a
science. You’re constantly making decisions about what
to do in every situation: some you get right but some
you won’t.
• But the skills involved – observation, listening, reading
body language, understanding human behavior and
stepping out of the content – can all be achieved
through practice.
• And the more you practice your facilitation skills, the
more comfortable you’ll become with it.
Group one 22
Advantages Of Facilitated Group Learning
• Groups have more information than a single individual.
• Groups stimulate creativity.
• People remember group discussions better.
• Decisions that students help make yield greater
satisfaction.
• Students gain a better understanding of themselves.
• Team work is highly valued by employers. (Alison Burke
2011)
Group one 23
Challenges Of Facilitated Group Learning
• Even though there are significant benefits to incorporating group
learning in your teaching there are many challenges that
teachers need to be aware of and strategies to put in place
should they occur. They include:
– Communication misunderstandings
– Inequitable contributions by individuals and an imbalance of
workload
– lack of leadership
– motivation of participants
– cultural differences and expectations
– An individual may dominate the discussion.

  • 4. Objectives At the end of this session the students will able to: o Define facilitation o To identify goal of facilitated group learning o To describe the techniques in facilitating groups o To identify Steps to effective facilitation skills o To describe advantages and challenges of facilitated group learning. Group one 4
  • 5. Introduction • There are three key words in the title, “facilitating”, “learning” and “groups”. • Facilitation:- is the act of making something easier. It comes from the Latin word for ‘easy’ which is “facilis”. • So, to facilitate someone is to make something easier for them because most things are difficult before they are easy. Group one 5
  • 6. Introduction… • Facilitation is also about movement, about making it easier to get from A to B (Hunter et al, 1996) • However, not all facilitation is equal: the skills associated with the facilitation of learning are different to those associated with the facilitation of problem-solving. Group one 6
  • 7. Introduction… • Learning:- is the activity or process of gaining knowledge or skill by studying, practicing, being taught, or experiencing something. • Groups:- can include random collections of people who come together for the purpose of attendance at;- • an educational session, • people who work in the same place, • service-based teams, or • any combination of more than two people who are learning together. Group one 7
  • 8. Introduction… • Generally Group facilitation is a process in which a person who:- • Is acceptable to all members of a group, • Is substantively neutral, • Has no decision-making authority, and • Is chosen to intervene in a group’s process to help it meet its agreed purpose. Group one 8
  • 10. Goal Of Facilitated Group Learning • The following are three goals we believe are particularly relevant for creating intentional group learning experiences: 1. To individually and collectively increase our awareness and understanding and to develop new perspectives (Miriam Bell 2016). 2. To make important decisions. Groups engage in learning to reach consensus or agreement on a path forward(Miriam Bell 2016). Group one 10
  • 11. Goal Of Facilitated Group Learning… 3. To generate new ideas and/or solutions. • Groups engage in learning to identify and/or refine ideas that could inform planning, design, or implementation; this might include generative discussions about solutions and possible actions (Miriam Bell 2016). Group one 11
  • 12. Techniques in Facilitating Groups • Brainstorming:- Generate a broad range of new and creative ideas. • Consensus:- Make a group decision in a highly participative, egalitarian fashion, and that everyone can live with, even though not all members might readily agree with the decision Group one 12
  • 13. Techniques in Facilitating Groups… • Discussion:- Open exchange of comments among group members to explore or clarify a topic, often in preparation for a decision. • Facilitator intervention:- Techniques used by the facilitator to strengthen a constructive practice or discontinue a destructive practice. Group one 13
  • 14. Techniques in Facilitating Groups… • Ground rules:- Guide and scope the group members to certain, desired behaviors in meetings; they establish the group’s desired personality of the group. • Meeting agendas:- Ensure meetings are highly focused and results-oriented around certain topics, their order and their timing. Group one 14
  • 15. Techniques in Facilitating Groups… • Meeting management:- Ensure all participation and group processes are highly effective and efficient in a meeting; can include most or all of the facilitation techniques, in addition to planning and following up the meeting. • Nominal Group Technique:- Collect, organize and summarize a wide range of ideas from among group members to generate group conclusions and recommendation Group one 15
  • 16. Techniques in Facilitating Groups… • Parking Lots:- List a topic or question to be addressed later on by the group. • Round-Robin:- Ensure complete collection of all ideas from all participants. • Stories:- Descriptions of experiences meant to convey important learnings. • Voting:- Make a selection from various alternatives Group one 16
  • 17. Steps To Effective Facilitation Skills • There are some steps of effective facilitation skills these are:- Step One: Set the Boundaries • Always begin by setting the ground rules and objectives, even if these are open ended. • Once you have established the boundaries, you can keep bringing the group back to these to make sure they remain on track. Group one 17
  • 18. Steps To Effective Facilitation Skills… Step Two: Remain impartial • A facilitator needs to encourage the group to consider ideas but their role should be one of guiding and not dictating. Step Three: Understand group dynamics • Group dynamics is a term to define the patterns and behaviors people use when they interact with others to work in a team or group. Group one 18
  • 19. Steps To Effective Facilitation Skills… • This is key to unlocking the group’s potential to achieve its goal because it is where you get into the politics and interaction between group members. Step Four: Use your personal style • A facilitator’s role is more about ‘being’ – the energy and personality you bring – rather than ‘doing’ – the techniques you use to help the group. • To create an open and honest environment, you need an empathic personal presence and the group needs to respect and trust you. Group one 19
  • 20. Steps To Effective Facilitation Skills… Step Five: Intervene when appropriate • It’s important to continuously notice what’s going on, make sense of it and then decide what to do about it. • You may need to ask difficult questions which are fundamental or which draw attention to difficult process issues which the group may find uncomfortable. Group one 20
  • 21. Steps To Effective Facilitation Skills… Step Six: Handling difficult situations • Dealing with difficult people and conflict are two of the biggest challenges to effective facilitation. • There are tactics and skills that you can develop to respond to these situations which are important because success is often determined by how the issue is addressed. • If it is a difficult situation suggest having a break for coffee, change the scenery, work in pairs or brainstorm the issue involved. Group one 21
  • 22. Steps To Effective Facilitation Skills… Step Seven: Practice, practice, practice • Remember facilitation is an art and not a science. You’re constantly making decisions about what to do in every situation: some you get right but some you won’t. • But the skills involved – observation, listening, reading body language, understanding human behavior and stepping out of the content – can all be achieved through practice. • And the more you practice your facilitation skills, the more comfortable you’ll become with it. Group one 22
  • 23. Advantages Of Facilitated Group Learning • Groups have more information than a single individual. • Groups stimulate creativity. • People remember group discussions better. • Decisions that students help make yield greater satisfaction. • Students gain a better understanding of themselves. • Team work is highly valued by employers. (Alison Burke 2011) Group one 23
  • 24. Challenges Of Facilitated Group Learning • Even though there are significant benefits to incorporating group learning in your teaching there are many challenges that teachers need to be aware of and strategies to put in place should they occur. They include: – Communication misunderstandings – Inequitable contributions by individuals and an imbalance of workload – lack of leadership – motivation of participants – cultural differences and expectations – An individual may dominate the discussion.
