The document discusses healthy soil and cover crops. It recommends getting a soil test from your local Extension Office or Midwestern Bio-Ag for a complete analysis. Cover crops add biomass and improve soil in various ways depending on the crop, such as suppressing weeds, fixing nitrogen, or breaking up clay. Buckwheat can be tilled in after blossoming to add biomass. A winter mix of rye, hairy vetch and crimson clover provides soil cover and nutrients into spring.

For more: http://www.extension.org/67595 Typically cattle producers can have improved animal performance through controlled systems such as an open lot feedlot. Open lots provide for improved control of diet, health, and monitoring of activity of the animals. Feeding areas such as these also can have disadvantages such as solid manure accumulation, surface water contamination when runoff water is uncontrolled, such systems are labor and machine intensive, and can contribute herd health issues because of high stocking densities, dust, or mud. Forage based grazing can negate many of these issues and is arguably more sustainable and environmentally friendly. However intensive grazing strategies must be employed to obtain comparable productivity. Development of technology that allows for these benefits is needed. Cross fencing and rotational grazing practices would benefit from more flexible and less labor intensive ways of controlling the grazing area.

Different types of soil.Sandy Soil - This type has the biggest particles and the size of the particles does determine the degree of aeration and drainage that the soil allows. It is granular and consists of rock and mineral particles that are very small. Therefore the texture is gritty and sandy soil is formed by the disintegration and weathering of rocks such as limestone, granite, quartz and shale. Sandy soil is easier to cultivate if it is rich in organic material but then it allows drainage more than is needed, thus resulting in over-drainage and dehydration of the plants in summer.
