Green Building In India
 Construction Industry is growing
 The platinum LEED (Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design (LEED-INDIA) rating has
motivated
 Sustainable site development
 Water savings
 Energy efficiency
 Materials selection and
 Indoor environmental quality
 Construction Industry in India to go green way
 IGBC-Headed by Stack holders, Architects,
Industries,Material Manufacturers etc. to promote
Green building in India
What is a Green Building
Eco friendly or ecological construction is
building a structure that is beneficial or non
harmful and is resource efficient.
Use of key resources like Energy, Materials,
Water and Land more efficiently.
Sustainability is the practice of being able to
continue the harvesting, extractions etc. with
minimal long –term efforts on environment and
natural resources.
Benefits of Green Building
 Environmental Benefits
 Enhance and protect ecosystem and biodiversity
 Improve air and water Quality
 Reduce solid waste
 Conserve natural resources
 Economic Benefits
 Reduce Operating Costs
 Enhance asset value and profit
 Improve employee productivity satisfaction
 Optimize life cycle economic performance.
Benefits of Green Building
 Health and community benefits
 Improve Air, Thermal and Acoustic environment
 Enhance occupant comfort and health
 Minimize strain on local infrastructure
 Contribute to overall quality of life.
Salient Features of Green Building
 Minimal disturbance to landscapes and site
conditions
 Use of recycled and environmental friendly building
materials
 Use of non-toxic and recyclable materials
 Efficient use of water and water recycling
 Use of energy efficient and eco friendly equipments
 Use of renewable energy
 Effective control and building management systems.
Green Materials and Techniques
Eco Friendly
Construction
Materials Techniques
Resource Efficiency:
Materials with content which can be reused or recycled.
E.g Aggregate,Recycled aluminum,paper,steel etc.
Natural,Plentiful or renewable:Materials harvested from
sustainably manageable resources.e.g Bamboo.
Bamboo Bamboo Flooring
Green materials and Techniques
Manufacturing Process: Products or materials manufactured
with resource efficient process including reducing energy
consumption, minimizing waste and reducing green house
gases.
Fly ash, Ferro cement, precast slabs etc.
Fly ash block Ferro cement
Green materials and Techniques
Green materials and Techniques
Locally Available: To reduce the energy consumed
during transportation .e.g. Earthen blocks
Earthen Blocks
Salvaged refurnished or remanufactured:This includes
saving a material from disposal and renovating, repair
or dumping the same.e.g wood
Durable: Any material used in the construction should be
durable i.e. long lasting.e,g Straw or cork construction,PVC
Pipes.
Straw construction PVC Pipes
Green materials and Techniques
 Indoor Air Quality:
 Low or Non-toxic: Materials, which emits low or
no toxic irritants .e.g. Low VOC Paints.
Low toxic paints Paper Crete Block
 Moisture resistant: These are the materials, which
resist the moisture or inhibit the growth of biological
contimants in the buildings .e.g. Paper Crete blocks,
 Healthfully maintained: Low toxic
cleaning materials.
Green materials and Techniques
Promoting healthy air quality:Techinques or materials
which promote healthy air quality by enhancing air quality
west facing windows, Aledo layer on roof, roof with glazed
tiles.
Green materials and Techniques
Energy efficient: Material components and systems that
help reduce energy consumption in the building e.g
Bamboo, Natural finishes, Rat trap method for construction
of walls, Solar panels, pre cast slabs, skylights in the roof.
Rat Trap method
Green materials and Techniques
Water Conservation: Rain water harvesting, Recycle
waste water.
Rain water Harvesting
Affordability:Affordability can be considered when
building product life cycle costs are comparable to
conventional materials
Green materials and Techniques
 Bricks from Coal Washery Rejects
 Coir Cement Board
 Fiber fly ash cement boards
 Fibrous gypsum plaster boards
 Recycled tiles
 High performance glazing glass
 Eco-friendly furniture
 HFC based high efficiency chillers
 Building blocks from mine waste
 Fly ash cellular concrete
 Non erodable mud plaster
 Jute fibre polyester
 Recast walling roofing components
 Prefab brick panel system
 Insulating bricks from rice husk
Green materials
Green building –case study of a residence
 Residence with site 40ftx60ft,with total built up area
of 2200sq.ft.
 Use of eco friendly materials as Fly ash blocks, soil,
bamboo. Earthen blocks, stone was used for exterior
walls.
Green building –case study of a residence
 Green your garden: Plant lot of plants, avoid
chemical fertilizers.Vermicompost made from
organic waste is used.
Vermicompost Vegetation in the garden
Green building –case study of a residence
Conserve water: Use water saving fittings like pop up
filters, waterless toilets, Rain water harvesting methods like –
 Roof top rainwater harvesting
 Roof top rainwater channelizes to recharge ground water
 Percolating water in garden area.
 Drip or Sprinkle irrigation method is used.
Rain water harvesting Pop-Up-Filter
Green building –case study of a residence
 Upgrade to greener appliances: Use star rated
appliances. Solar heaters, solar panels for lighting and
solar cookers are part of the residence.
Solar Panels Solar Cooker
Green building –case study of a residence
 Temperature control: Use of ceiling fans than AC’s.
Use of Rat Tap method of construction of walls, Most of
living area is not exposed to western or southern area.
Large windows with sun controlled glasses.
Rat Trap method
Green building –case study of a residence
 Energy efficient Lighting: Use of compact
Fluorescent bulbs. Use of light colors for interiors,
roof claded with clay tiles and painted white. Sky
lighting in the roof.
Sky lighting on the roof CFC Bulbs

45% reduction in lighting energy.90% reduction in
water use
Cost analysis of Green building
 Initial cost of the Green building is higher than
conventional one.
 Incremental cost will appear small when eco principles
are applied.
 The incremental cost should be seen with reference to
life cycle costs.
 The payback period of incremental costs of some Green
buildings is as shown:
