2. What is GRAPHIC NOVEL?
A graphic novel is a book made up of comics
content. Although the word “novel” normally
refers to long fictional works, the term “graphic
novel” is applied broadly and includes fiction,
non-fiction, and anthologized work. It is
distinguished from the term “comic book”,
which is generally used for comic periodicals.
3. What are the CHARACTERISTICS of a
GRAPHIC NOVEL?
“Graphic novels are, simply defined, book-
length comics. Sometimes they tell single,
continuous narrative from first page to last;
sometimes they are collections of shorter
stories or individual comic strips. Comics are
sequential visual art, usually with text, that are
often told in a series of rectangular panels”
4. What are the Graphic Novel ELEMENTS?
Layout – refers to how panels are arranged on a page.
Panel – is an individual frame, or single drawing in
the multiple-panel sequence of a comic strip.
Frame – the lines and borders that contain the panel.
Gutter – the space between framed panels.
Bleed – an image that extends to and/or beyond the
edge of the page
5. (Foreground, Midground, Background)
oForeground – the character is in the foreground, which
means it is the focus of the panel.
oMidground – the character is in the midground, which
shows the importance of the focus of the panel.
oBackground – shows the present contributes to the back
story but is not more relevant than the character.
Graphic weight – a term that describes the way some
images draw the eye more than others.
6. Faces
Hands and Feet – the positioning of hand and feet can be
used to express what is happening in the story.
Shading and Color – show feelings, moods and emotions
with different colors.
Caption – these are boxes containing a variety of text
elements, including scene-setting,description,etc.
Speech balloons & Special effect lettering – these enclose
dialogue and come from a specific speakers mouth.
7. How is GRAPHIC NOVEL different from a
COMIC BOOK?
Graphic novels are much longer and
tend to be much more complex, while
comic book will tell a story over many
issues, graphic novels more often have
their story lines wrapped up in only one
or two books.
